•Many states and provinces require thatsmall children use approved boosterseats until they reach age eight, a heightof 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 meters) tall, or80 lb (36 kg). Check your local and stateor provincial laws for specificrequirements about the safety of childrenin your vehicle.
•When possible, always properly restrainchildren 12 years of age and under in arear seating position of your vehicle.Accident statistics suggest that childrenare safer when properly restrained in therear seating positions than in a frontseating position. See Front PassengerSensing System (page 52).
INSTALLING CHILD RESTRAINTS
Child Seats
Use a child safety seat (sometimes called aninfant carrier, convertible seat, or toddlerseat) for infants, toddlers or childrenweighing 40 lb (18 kg) or less (generally agefour or younger).
Using Lap and Shoulder Belts
WARNING: Airbags can kill or injurea child in a child restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front of anactive airbag. If you must use aforward-facing child restraint in the frontseat, move the seat upon which the childrestraint is installed all the way back.

8. Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling down on the lap belt in order toforce slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remaining slackthat exists once the extra weight of thechild is added to the child restraint. It alsohelps to achieve the proper snugness ofthe child restraint to your vehicle.Sometimes, a slight lean toward thebuckle will additionally help to removeremaining slack from the belt.
9. Attach the tether strap (if the childrestraint is equipped).
10. Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward and backto make sure the seat is securely heldin place. To check this, grab the seat atthe belt path and attempt to move itside to side and forward and back.There should be no more than 1 in(2.5 cm) of movement for properinstallation.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety Technicianto make certain the child restraint is properlyinstalled. In Canada, check with TransportCanada for referral to a Child Car Seat Clinic.
Using Lower Anchors and Tethers for
CHildren (LATCH)
WARNING: Do not attach two childsafety restraints to the same anchor. In acrash, one anchor may not be strongenough to hold two child safety restraintattachments and may break, causingserious injury or death.
WARNING: Depending on where yousecure a child restraint, and depending onthe child restraint design, you may blockaccess to certain seatbelt buckleassemblies and LATCH lower anchors,rendering those features potentiallyunusable. The LATCH anchors are at the rear sectionof the rear seat between the cushion andseatback below the symbols as shown.Follow the child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions to properly install a child restraintwith LATCH attachments.
Follow the instructions on attaching childsafety seats with tether straps. See UsingTether Straps later in this chapter.
Attach LATCH lower attachments of the childrestraint only to the anchors shown.
Use of Inboard Lower Anchors from theOutboard Seating Positions (Center SeatingUse)
WARNING: The standardized spacingfor LATCH lower anchors is 11 in (280 mm)center to center. Do not use LATCH loweranchors for the center seating positionunless the child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions permit and specify usinganchors spaced at least as far apart asthose in this vehicle.
The lower anchors at the center of thesecond row bench seat are spaced 20.5 in(52 cm) apart. The standardized spacing forLATCH lower anchors is 11 in (28 cm) centerto center. You cannot install a child restraintwith rigid LATCH attachments at the centerseating position. You can only use LATCHcompatible child restraints (with attachmentson belt webbing) at this seating positionprovided that the child restraintmanufacturer’s instructions permit use withthe anchor spacing stated. Do not attach achild restraint to any lower anchor if anadjacent child restraint is attached to thatanchor.
Each time you use the safety seat, check thatthe seat is properly attached to the loweranchors and tether anchor, if applicable. Tugthe child restraint from side to side andforward and back where it is secured to yourvehicle. The seat should move less than 1 in(2.5 cm) when you do this for a properinstallation.
If the safety seat is not anchored properly,the risk of a child being injured in a crashgreatly increases.
Combining Seatbelt and LATCH LowerAnchors for Attaching Child Safety Seats
When used in combination, either theseatbelt or the LATCH lower anchors maybe attached first, provided a properinstallation is achieved. Attach the tetherstrap afterward, if included with the childrestraint.
Using Tether Straps
Many forward-facing child safetyseats include a tether strap whichextends from the back of the childsafety seat and hooks to an anchoring pointcalled the top tether anchor. Tether strapsare available as an accessory for many oldersafety seats.
Contact the manufacturer of your childrestraint for information about ordering atether strap, or to obtain a longer tether strapif the tether strap on your safety seat doesnot reach the appropriate top tether anchorin your vehicle.

Use a belt-positioning booster seat forchildren who have outgrown or no longerproperly fit in a child safety seat (generallychildren who are less than 57 in (1.45 m) tall,are greater than age four (4) and less thanage twelve (12), and between 40 lb (18 kg)and 80 lb (36 kg) and upward to 100 lb
(45 kg) if recommended by your childrestraint manufacturer). Many state andprovincial laws require that children useapproved booster seats until they reach ageeight, a height of 57 in (1.45 m) tall, or 80 lb(36 kg).
Booster seats should be used until you cananswer YES to ALL of these questions whenseated without a booster seat:
•Can the child sit all the way back againsttheir vehicle seat backrest with kneesbent comfortably at the edge of the seatcushion?
•Can the child sit without slouching?

If the booster seat slides on the vehicle seatupon which it is being used, placing arubberized mesh sold as shelf or carpet linerunder the booster seat may improve thiscondition. Do not introduce any item thickerthan this under the booster seat. Check withthe booster seat manufacturer's instructions.
CHILD RESTRAINT POSITIONING
WARNING: Do not place a rearwardfacing child restraint in front of an activeairbag. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Always drive and ridewith your seatback upright and the lap beltsnug and low across the hips.
WARNING: Children must always beproperly restrained.
WARNING: Never let a passengerhold a child on his or her lap while thevehicle is moving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crash.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people toride in any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and seatbelts. Makesure everyone in your vehicle is in a seatand properly using a seatbelt. Failure tofollow this warning could result in seriouspersonal injury or death.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
WARNING: Each seating position inyour vehicle has a specific seatbeltassembly made up of one buckle and onetongue designed to be used as a pair. Usethe shoulder belt on the outside shoulderonly. Never wear the shoulder belt underthe arm. Never use a single seatbelt formore than one person.
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrainchildren 12 and under in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: Seatbelts and seats maybe hot in a vehicle that is in the sunshine.The hot seatbelts or seats may burn a smallchild. Check seat covers and bucklesbefore you place a child anywhere nearthem.
All seating positions in your vehicle have lapand shoulder seatbelts. All occupants of thevehicle should always properly wear theirseatbelts, even when an airbag supplementalrestraint system is provided.
The seatbelt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder seatbelts.
•Shoulder seatbelt with automatic lockingmode, (except driver seatbelt and rearinflatable seatbelt).

The seatbelt pretensioners and rearinflatable seatbelts are designed to activatein frontal, near-frontal and side crashes, andin rollovers. The seatbelt pretensioners atthe front seating positions are designed totighten the seatbelts firmly against theoccupant’s body when activated. This helpsincrease the effectiveness of the seatbelts.In frontal crashes, the seatbelt pretensionerscan be activated alone or, if the crash is ofsufficient severity, together with the frontairbags.
FASTENING THE SEATBELTS
Standard belts shown, inflatable belts similar
The front outboard and rear safety restraintsin the vehicle are combination lap andshoulder belts.
1. Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to the directionthe tongue is coming from) until you heara click and feel it latch. Make sure yousecurely fasten the tongue in the buckle.
2. To unfasten, press the release buttonand remove the tongue from the buckle.
Using Seatbelts During Pregnancy
WARNING: Always ride and drivewith your seatback upright and properlyfasten your seatbelt. Fit the lap portion ofthe seatbelt snugly and low across thehips. Position the shoulder portion of theseatbelt across your chest. Pregnantwomen must follow this practice. See thefollowing figure.

Pregnant women should always wear theirseatbelt. Position the lap belt portion of acombination lap and shoulder belt low acrossthe hips below the belly and worn as tightas comfort allows. Position the shoulder beltto cross the middle of the shoulder and thecenter of the chest.
Third Row Seatbelt Stowage
WARNING: Make sure to put bothportions of the shoulder belt in thestowage clip. Putting only one portion ofthe shoulder belt in the stowage clipincreases the amount of belt slack and mayreduce the effectiveness of the seatbelt inthe event of a crash.
To stow the seatbelt, grasp both portions ofthe shoulder belt together in one hand andslide them into the seatbelt stowage clip asshown.
Keep the outer and inner shoulder beltstogether in the stowage clip to prevent thepotential of wrinkling the cargo shade.
Seatbelt Locking Modes
WARNING: If your vehicle is involvedin a crash, have the seatbelts andassociated components inspected as soonas possible. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.

1.Buckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt.
2.Grasp the lap portion of the belt and pullupward until you pull the entire belt out.
3. Allow the belt to retract. As the beltretracts, you will hear a clicking sound.This indicates the seatbelt is now in theautomatic locking mode.
How to Disengage the Automatic LockingMode
Unbuckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt and allow it to retract completely todisengage the automatic locking mode andactivate the vehicle sensitive (emergency)locking mode.
Rear Inflatable Seatbelt (If Equipped)
WARNING: Do not attempt to service,repair, or modify the supplementaryrestraint system or associated components.Failure to follow this instruction could resultin personal injury or death.
Note:The rear inflatable seatbelts arecompatible with most infant and child safetycar seats and belt positioning booster seatswhen properly installed. This is because theyare designed to fill with a cooled gas at alower pressure and at a slower rate thantraditional airbags. After inflation, theshoulder portion of the seatbelt remains coolto the touch.
The rear inflatable seatbelts are in theshoulder portion of the seatbelts of thesecond-row outboard seating positions.
The rear inflatable seatbelt consists of thefollowing:
•An inflatable bag in the shoulder seatbeltwebbing.
•Lap seatbelt webbing with automaticlocking mode.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator. See CrashSensors and Airbag Indicator (page 57).
How does the rear inflatable seatbeltsystem work?
WARNING: If a supplementaryrestraint system component has deployed,it will not function again. Have the systemand associated components inspected assoon as possible. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.
