2. After positioning the child safety seat inthe proper seating position, pull down onthe shoulder belt and then grasp theshoulder belt and lap belt togetherbehind the belt tongue.
3. While holding the shoulder and lap beltportions together, route the tonguethrough the child restraint according tothe child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions. Be sure the belt webbing isnot twisted.
4. Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to the directionthe tongue is coming from) for thatseating position until you hear a snap andfeel the latch engage. Make sure thetongue is latched securely by pulling onit.
5. To put the retractor in the automaticlocking mode, grasp the shoulder portionof the belt and pull downward until youpull all of the belt out.

Note:Unlike the standard seatbelt, theinflatable seatbelt's unique lap portion locksthe child restraint for installation. The abilityfor the shoulder portion of the belt to movefreely is normal, even after the lap belt hasbeen put into the automatic locking mode.
Note:The lock-off device on some childrestraints may not accommodate theshoulder portion of the inflatable seatbelt.Follow all instructions provided by themanufacturer of the child restraint regardingthe necessary and proper use of the lock-offdevice. In some instances, these deviceshave been provided only for use in vehicleswith seatbelt systems that would otherwiserequire a locking clip.
6.Allow the belt to retract to remove slack.The belt clicks as it retracts to indicate itis in the automatic locking mode.
7.Try to pull the belt out of the retractor tomake sure the retractor is in theautomatic locking mode (you should notbe able to pull more belt out). If theretractor is not locked, unbuckle the beltand repeat Steps 5 and 6.

Note:The child restraint must rest tightlyagainst the vehicle seat upon which it isinstalled. It may be necessary to lift orremove the head restraint. See Seats (page130).
CHILD SAFETY LOCKS
When these locks are set, the rear doorscannot be opened from the inside.
The childproof locks are located on the rearedge of each rear door and must be setseparately for each door.
Left-Hand Side
Turn counterclockwise to lock and clockwiseto unlock.
Right-Hand Side
Turn clockwise to lock and counterclockwiseto unlock.

All safety restraints in the vehicle arecombination lap and shoulder belts. Thedriver seatbelt has the vehicle sensitivelocking mode. The front outboard passengerand rear seatbelts have both the vehiclesensitive locking mode and the automaticlocking mode.
Vehicle Sensitive Mode
This is the normal retractor mode, whichallows free shoulder belt length adjustmentto your movements and locking in responseto vehicle movement. For example, if thedriver brakes suddenly or turns a cornersharply, or the vehicle receives an impact ofabout 5 mph (8 km/h) or more, thecombination seatbelts lock to help reduceforward movement of the driver andpassengers.
In addition, the retractor is designed to lockif you pull the webbing out too quickly. If theseatbelt retractor locks, slowly lower theheight adjuster to allow the seatbelt toretract. If the retractor does not unlock, pullthe seatbelt out slowly then feed a small
length of webbing back toward the stowedposition. For rear seatbelts, recline the rearseat backrest or push the seat backrestcushion away from the seatbelt. Feed a smalllength of webbing back toward the stowedposition.
Automatic Locking Mode
In this mode, the shoulder belt automaticallypre-locks. The belt retracts to remove anyslack in the shoulder belt. The automaticlocking mode is not available on the driverseatbelt.
When to Use the Automatic Locking Mode
Use this mode any time a child safety seat,except a booster, is installed in passengerfront or rear seating positions. Properlyrestrain children 12 years old and under in arear seating position whenever possible.See Child Safety (page 18).
How to Use the Automatic Locking Mode
Non-inflatable seatbelts
1.Buckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt.
2. Grasp the shoulder portion and pulldownward until you pull the entire beltout. As the belt retracts, you will hear aclicking sound. This indicates the seatbeltis now in the automatic locking mode.
Rear outboard inflatable seatbelts (secondrow only–if equipped)

1.Buckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt.
2.Grasp the lap portion of the belt and pullupward until you pull the entire belt out.
3. Allow the belt to retract. As the beltretracts, you will hear a clicking sound.This indicates the seatbelt is now in theautomatic locking mode.
How to Disengage the Automatic LockingMode
Unbuckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt and allow it to retract completely todisengage the automatic locking mode andactivate the vehicle sensitive (emergency)locking mode.
Rear Inflatable Seatbelt (If Equipped)
WARNING: Do not attempt to service,repair, or modify the supplementaryrestraint system or associated components.Failure to follow this instruction could resultin personal injury or death.
Note:The rear inflatable seatbelts arecompatible with most infant and child safetycar seats and belt positioning booster seatswhen properly installed. This is because theyare designed to fill with a cooled gas at alower pressure and at a slower rate thantraditional airbags. After inflation, theshoulder portion of the seatbelt remains coolto the touch.
The rear inflatable seatbelts are in theshoulder portion of the seatbelts of thesecond-row outboard seating positions.
The rear inflatable seatbelt consists of thefollowing:
•An inflatable bag in the shoulder seatbeltwebbing.
•Lap seatbelt webbing with automaticlocking mode.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator. See CrashSensors and Airbag Indicator (page 57).
How does the rear inflatable seatbeltsystem work?
WARNING: If a supplementaryrestraint system component has deployed,it will not function again. Have the systemand associated components inspected assoon as possible. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.
The rear inflatable seatbelts functions likestandard restraints in everyday usage.

Only use oils certified for gasoline enginesby the American Petroleum Institute (API). An oil with this trademark symbol conformsto the current engine and emission systemprotection standards and fuel economyrequirements of the International LubricantsSpecification Advisory Committee (ILSAC).
To top up the engine oil level do thefollowing:
1. Clean the area surrounding the engineoil filler cap before you remove it.
2. Remove the engine oil filler cap. SeeUnder Hood Overview (page 284). Turnit counterclockwise and remove it.
3. Add engine oil that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 355). You may haveto use a funnel to pour the engine oil intothe opening.
4. Recheck the oil level.
5. If the oil level is correct, replace thedipstick and make sure it is fully seated.
6. Replace the engine oil filler cap. Turn itclockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
Note: Do not add oil further than themaximum mark. Oil levels above themaximum mark may cause engine damage.
Note:Make sure you install the oil filler capcorrectly.
Note:Soak up any spillage with anabsorbent cloth immediately.
OIL CHANGE INDICATOR RESET
Use the information display controls on thesteering wheel to reset the oil changeindicator.
From the main menu scroll to:

WARNING: Do not put coolant in thewindshield washer reservoir. If sprayed onthe windshield, coolant could make itdifficult to see through the windshield.
Note: Do not use stop leak pellets, coolingsystem sealants, or non-specified additivesas they can cause damage to the enginecooling or heating systems. Resultingcomponent damage may not be covered bythe vehicle Warranty.
Note: Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable.
It is very important to use prediluted coolantapproved to the correct specification in orderto avoid plugging the small passageways inthe engine cooling system. See Capacitiesand Specifications (page 343). Do not mixdifferent colors or types of coolant in yourvehicle. Mixing of engine coolants or usingan incorrect coolant may harm the engine orcooling system components and may not becovered by the vehicle Warranty.
Note:If prediluted coolant is not available,use the approved concentrated coolantdiluting it to 50/50 with distilled water. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page 343).Using water that has not been deionisedmay contribute to deposit formation,corrosion and plugging of the small coolingsystem passageways.
Note: Coolants marketed for all makes andmodels may not be approved to ourspecifications and may cause damage tothe cooling system. Resulting componentdamage may not be covered by the vehicleWarranty.
If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.
To top up the coolant level do the following:
1. Unscrew the cap slowly. Any pressureescapes as you unscrew the cap.
2. Add prediluted coolant approved to thecorrect specification. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 343).
3.Add enough prediluted coolant to reachthe correct level.
4. Replace the coolant reservoir cap, turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
5. Check the coolant level in the coolantreservoir the next few times you driveyour vehicle. If necessary, add enoughprediluted engine coolant to bring thecoolant level to the correct level.
If you have to add more than 1.1 qt (1 L) ofengine coolant per month, have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible. Operating anengine with a low level of coolant can resultin engine overheating and possible enginedamage.
Note:During normal vehicle operation, thecoolant may change color from orange topink or light red. As long as the coolant isclear and uncontaminated, this color changedoes not indicate the coolant has degradednor does it require the coolant to be drained,the system to be flushed, or the coolant tobe replaced.
In case of emergency, you can add a largeamount of water without engine coolant inorder to reach a vehicle service location. Inthis instance, qualified personnel:

Checking the Transmission Fluid Level
WARNING: The dipstick andsurrounding components are hot. Usegloves when moving components andchecking the transmission fluid level.Failure to follow this warning could resultin serious personal injury.
Only check the transmission fluid level whenthe engine is at normal operatingtemperature 179°F (82°C)-199°F (93°C).Normal operating temperature is reachedafter driving approximately 20 mi (30 km).

Note:Check the fluid level with the enginerunning and the transmission in park (P).
1. Make sure that your vehicle is on levelground.
2. Rotate the automatic transmission fluidcap in a counterclockwise direction. SeeUnder Hood Overview (page 283).
3. Remove the cap and dipstick and wipeit with a clean, lint-free cloth. Replace thecap and dipstick and remove it again tocheck the fluid level.
4.Make sure that the fluid level is betweenthe MIN and the MAX marks. If the fluidlevel is at the MIN mark, add fluidimmediately. See Adding TransmissionFluid.
5.Replace the automatic transmission fluidcap and dipstick. Turn it clockwise untilyou feel a strong resistance.
Low Fluid Level
If the fluid level is within the minimum range(below point A) add the correct specificationfluid to be within the hash mark area. SeeCapacities and Specifications (page 349).
Note:If the fluid level is below the minimumrange do not drive your vehicle. A low fluidlevel can damage the transmission.
Correct Fluid Level
If the fluid level is within the hash mark area(between points A and B) do not add anyfluid.
High Fluid Level
If the fluid level is above the maximum range(above point B) fluid may need to beremoved. High fluid levels may be causedby a overheating condition. If you haveoperated your vehicle at high speeds, towinga trailer or in city traffic during hot weather,allow your vehicle to cool for a minimum of30 minutes before rechecking the level.
Note:An overfill condition can damage thetransmission.
Adding Transmission Fluid*
1. Rotate the automatic transmission fluidcap in a counterclockwise direction.

2. Remove the cap and dipstick and wipeit with a clean, lint-free cloth.
3. Add fluid that meets the Fordspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 349). Pour the fluiddirectly into the automatic transmissionfluid cap and dipstick hole.
4.Replace the cap and dipstick and removeit again to check the fluid level.
5.Make sure that the fluid level is betweenthe MIN and the MAX marks.
6.Replace the automatic transmission fluidcap and dipstick. Turn it clockwise untilyou feel a strong resistance.
*Vehicles With Turbocharged Engines
WARNING: Do not start the enginewith the air filter removed. This can causedamage not covered by the vehicleWarranty and can result in serious injury.
1. Loosen the clamp holding the air filterassembly to the rubber hose.
2. Remove the air filter assembly securingbolts.
3. Lift the air filter assembly to disengagethe locating pins.
4.Rotate the air filter assembly slightly in acounterclockwise direction.
5. Check the transmission fluid level.
6. Install the air filter assembly in reverseorder. Tighten the air filter assemblysecuring bolts until you feel a strongresistance.
BRAKE FLUID CHECK
WARNING: Do not use any fluid otherthan the recommended brake fluid as thiswill reduce brake efficiency. Use ofincorrect fluid could result in the loss ofvehicle control, serious personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Only use brake fluid froma sealed container. Contamination with dirt,water, petroleum products or othermaterials may result in brake systemdamage or failure. Failure to adhere to thiswarning could result in the loss of vehiclecontrol, serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: Do not allow the fluid totouch your skin or eyes. If this happens,rinse the affected areas immediately withplenty of water and contact your physician.
WARNING: A fluid level between theMAX and MIN lines is within the normaloperating range and there is no need toadd fluid. A fluid level not in the normaloperating range could compromise theperformance of the system. Have yourvehicle checked immediately.

WARNING: When lifting aplastic-cased battery, excessive pressureon the end walls could cause acid to flowthrough the vent caps, resulting in personalinjury and damage to the vehicle or battery.Lift the battery with a battery carrier or withyour hands on opposite corners.
WARNING: Keep batteries out ofreach of children. Batteries contain sulfuricacid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes orclothing. Shield your eyes when workingnear the battery to protect against possiblesplashing of acid solution. In case of acidcontact with skin or eyes, flush immediatelywith water for a minimum of 15 minutes andget prompt medical attention. If acid isswallowed, call a physician immediately.
WARNING: Battery posts, terminalsand related accessories contain lead andlead compounds. Wash hands afterhandling.
WARNING: For vehicles withAuto-Start-Stop the battery requirement isdifferent. You must replace the battery withone of exactly the same specification.
Your vehicle is fitted with a Motorcraftmaintenance-free battery which normallydoes not require additional water.
When a battery replacement is required, youmust use a recommended replacementbattery that matches the electricalrequirements of the vehicle.
Note:If your vehicle has a battery cover,after cleaning or replacing the battery, makesure you reinstall it.
Note:See an authorized dealer for batteryaccess, testing, or replacement.
To make sure the battery managementsystem works correctly, do not connect anelectrical device ground connection directlyto the battery negative post. This can causeinaccurate measurements of the batterycondition and potential incorrect systemoperation.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it may adverselyaffect battery performance and durability.This may also affect the performance ofother electrical systems in the vehicle.
If you see any corrosion on the battery orterminals, remove the cables from theterminals and clean with a wire brush. Youcan neutralize the acid with a solution ofbaking soda and water.
Because your vehicle’s engine iselectronically-controlled by a computer,some engine control settings are maintainedby power from the battery. Some enginecomputer settings, like the idle trim and fueltrim strategy, optimize the driveability andperformance of the engine. The clock andradio station presets are also maintained inmemory by power from the low-voltagebattery. These settings are erased when atechnician disconnects and connects thelow-voltage battery.
To restore the settings, do the following:
