DATA RECORDING
Service Data Recording
Service data recorders in your vehicle arecapable of collecting and storing diagnosticinformation about your vehicle. Thispotentially includes information about theperformance or status of various systemsand modules in the vehicle, such as engine,throttle, steering or brake systems. In orderto properly diagnose and service yourvehicle, Ford Motor Company (Ford ofCanada in Canada), and service and repairfacilities may access or share among themvehicle diagnostic information receivedthrough a direct connection to your vehiclewhen diagnosing or servicing your vehicle.Additionally, Ford Motor Company (Ford ofCanada, in Canada) may, where permittedby law, use vehicle diagnostic informationfor vehicle improvement or with otherinformation we may have about you, (forexample, your contact information), to offer
you products or services that may interestyou. Data may be provided to our serviceproviders such as part suppliers that mayhelp diagnose malfunctions, and who aresimilarly obligated to protect data. We retainthis data only as long as necessary toperform these functions or to comply withlaw. We may provide information whererequired in response to official requests tolaw enforcement or other governmentauthorities or third parties acting with lawfulauthority or court order, and such informationmay be used in legal proceedings. For U.S.only (if equipped), if you choose to useconnected apps and services, such as SYNCVehicle Health Report or MyFord Mobile App,you consent that certain diagnosticinformation may also be accessedelectronically by Ford Motor Company andFord authorized service facilities, and thatthe diagnostic information may be used toprovide services to you, personalizing yourexperience, troubleshoot, and to improveproducts and services and offer you productsand services that may interest you, wherepermitted by law. Event Data Recording
This vehicle is equipped with an event datarecorder. The main purpose of an eventdata recorder is to record, in certain crashor near crash-like situations, such as anairbag deployment or hitting a roadobstacle; this data will assist inunderstanding how a vehicle’s systemsperformed. The event data recorder isdesigned to record data related to vehicledynamics and safety systems for a shortperiod of time, typically 30 seconds or less.

Introduction

Note:Including to the extent that any lawpertaining to Event Data Recorders appliesto SYNC or its features, please note thefollowing: Once 911 Assist (if equipped) isenabled (set ON), 911 Assist may, throughany paired and connected cell phone,disclose to emergency services that thevehicle has been in a crash involving thedeployment of an airbag or, in certainvehicles, the activation of the fuel pumpshut-off. Certain versions or updates to 911Assist may also be capable of being usedto electronically or verbally provide to 911operators the vehicle location (such aslatitude and longitude), and/or other detailsabout the vehicle or crash or personalinformation about the occupants to assist911 operators to provide the mostappropriate emergency services. If you do notwant Ford or its vendors to receive thisinformation, do not activate the service. Introduction

The Personal Safety System provides animproved overall level of frontal crashprotection to front seat occupants and isdesigned to help further reduce the risk ofairbag-related injuries. The system is able toanalyze different occupant conditions andcrash severity before activating theappropriate safety devices to help betterprotect a range of occupants in a variety offrontal crash situations.
The Vehicle Personal Safety System consistsof:
•Driver and passenger dual-stage airbagsupplemental restraints.
•Front seat outermost seatbelts withpretensioners, energy managementretractors and seatbelt usage sensors.
•Driver seat position sensor.
•Passenger seat position sensor.
•Front passenger sensing system.
•Passenger airbag off and on indicators.
•Front crash severity sensors.
•Restraints control module with impactand safing sensors.
•Restraint system warning lamp and tone.
•The electrical wiring for the airbags, crashsensors, seatbelt pretensioners, frontseatbelt usage sensors, driver seatposition sensor, front passenger sensingsystem and indicators.
How Does the Personal Safety SystemWork?
The Personal Safety System can adapt thedeployment strategy of the safety devicesaccording to crash severity and occupantconditions. A collection of crash andoccupant sensors provides information tothe restraints control module. During a crash,the restraints control module may deploy theseatbelt pretensioners, one or both stagesof the dual-stage airbags based on crashseverity and occupant conditions.

FRONT PASSENGER SENSING
SYSTEM
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrain children12 and under in a rear seating position.Failure to follow this could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Any alteration ormodification to the front passenger seat mayaffect the performance of the front passengersensing system. This could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
This system works with sensors that are partof the front passenger seat and seatbelt todetect the presence of a properly-seatedoccupant and determine if the frontpassenger frontal airbag should be enabled(may inflate) or not.
The front passenger sensing system uses apassenger airbag status indicator thatilluminates indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either ON(enabled) or OFF (disabled).
The indicator lamp is in the center stack ofthe instrument panel.
Note:The passenger airbag status indicatorOFF and ON indicator lamps illuminate fora short period of time when you first switchthe ignition on to confirm it is functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag when the frontpassenger seat is unoccupied, or a rearfacing infant seat, a forward-facing childrestraint, or a booster seat is detected. Evenwith this technology, parents are stronglyencouraged to always properly restrainchildren in the rear seat. The sensor alsoturns off the passenger front airbag whenthe passenger seat is empty.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag, the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates theOFF lamp and stays lit to remind you thatthe front passenger frontal airbag isdisabled.
•If the child restraint has been installedand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the ON lamp, then switch thevehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom the vehicle and reinstall the restraintfollowing the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.

Supplementary Restraints SystemE181984

The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to enable (may inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag anytime the systemsenses that a person of adult size is sittingproperly in the front passenger seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem enables the front passengerfrontal airbag (may inflate), the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates the ONlamp and remains illuminated.
If a person of adult size is sitting in the frontpassenger seat, but the airbag off indicatorlamp is lit, it is possible that the person is notsitting properly in the seat. If this happens:
•Switch the vehicle off and ask the personto place the seat backrest in an uprightposition.
•Have the person sit upright in the seat,centered on the seat cushion, with theperson’s legs comfortably extended.
•Restart the vehicle and have the personremain in this position for about twominutes. This allows the system to detectthat person and enable the passengerfrontal airbag.
•If the indicator OFF lamp remains lit evenafter this, advise the person to ride in therear seat.

Supplementary Restraints System

If it illuminates when the engine is runningthis indicates a malfunction. Stop yourvehicle as soon as it is safe to do so andswitch the engine off. Check the engine oillevel. If the oil level is sufficient, thisindicates a system malfunction. Have yourvehicle checked as soon as possible.
See Engine Oil Check (page 302).
Fasten Seatbelt Warning Lamp
It illuminates and a chime soundsuntil you fasten the seatbelts.
Front Airbag
If it fails to illuminate when youstart your vehicle, continues toflash or remains on, it indicates amalfunction. Have the system checked byyour authorized dealer.
Heads Up Display (If Equipped)
A red beam of lights will illuminateon the windshield in certaininstances when using adaptivecruise control and/or the collision warningsystem. It will also illuminate momentarilywhen you start your vehicle to make sure thedisplay works.
Headlamp High Beam Indicator
It illuminates when you switch thehigh beam headlamps on. It willflash when you use the headlampflasher.
Hood Ajar
Displays when the ignition is onand the hood is not completelyclosed.
Lane Keeping System Lamp
It illuminates when the systemactivates.
Low Fuel Level Warning Lamp
It illuminates when the fuel level islow or the fuel tank is nearlyempty. Refuel as soon as possible.
Low Tire Pressure Warning Lamp
It illuminates when your tirepressure is low. If the lamp remainson with the engine running orwhen driving, check your tire pressure assoon as possible.
It also illuminates momentarily when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lamp isfunctional. If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, or begins to flash atany time, have the system checked by yourauthorized dealer.
Low Washer Fluid Level Warning Lamp
It illuminates when the windshieldwasher fluid is low.

SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Do not recline the seatbackas this can cause the occupant to slide underthe safety belt, resulting in serious injury inthe event of a crash.
WARNING: Do not place objects higherthan the seatback to reduce the risk ofserious injury in the event of a crash orduring heavy braking.
When you use them properly, the seat, headrestraint, safety belt and airbags will provideoptimum protection in the event of a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the base ofyour spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seatback more than30 degrees.
•Adjust the head restraint so that the topof it is level with the top of your head andas far forward as possible. Make sure thatyou remain comfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in (25 cm)between your breastbone and the airbagcover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of the safetybelt over the center of your shoulder andposition the lap strap tightly across yourhips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.

•You can reset the timer by interactingwith your vehicle (such as pressing thebrake pedal or accelerator pedal).
•You can temporarily switch off theshutdown feature any time the ignition ison (for the current ignition cycle only).Use the information display to do so. SeeInformation Displays (page 110).
•During the countdown before engineshutdown, you are prompted to press OKor RESET (depending on your type ofinformation display) to temporarily switchthe feature off (for the current ignitioncycle only).
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Stationary
1. Put the transmission in position P.
2. Press the button once.
3. Apply the parking brake.
Note:This switches off the ignition, allelectrical circuits, warning lamps andindicators.
Note:If the engine is idling for 30 minutes,the ignition and engine automatically shutdown.
Stopping the Engine When YourVehicle is Moving
WARNING: Switching off the enginewhen the vehicle is still moving will result ina loss of brake and steering assistance. Thesteering will not lock, but higher effort willbe required. When the ignition is switchedoff, some electrical circuits, including airbags, warning lamps and indicators may alsobe off. If the ignition was turned offaccidentally, you can shift into neutral (N) andre-start the engine.
1. Put the transmission in position N anduse the brakes to bring your vehicle to asafe stop.
2. When your vehicle has stopped, put thetransmission in position P.
3. Press and hold the button for onesecond, or press it three times within twoseconds.
4. Apply the parking brake.
Guarding Against Exhaust Fumes
WARNING: Exhaust leaks may resultin entry of harmful and potentially lethalfumes into the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside your vehicle,have your vehicle inspected immediately. Donot drive if you smell exhaust fumes.
Important Ventilating Information
If you stop your vehicle and then leave theengine idling for long periods, werecommend that you do one of the following:
•Open the windows at least 1 in (2.5 cm).
•Set your climate control to outside air.
ENGINE BLOCK HEATER (If Equipped)
WARNING: Failure to follow engineblock heater instructions could result inproperty damage or serious personal injury.

Starting and Stopping the Engine

3. Once the disabled vehicle has beenstarted, run both vehicle engines for anadditional three minutes beforedisconnecting the jumper cables.
Removing the Jumper Cables
Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder that they were connected.
1. Remove the negative (-) jumper cablefrom the disabled vehicle.
2. Remove the jumper cable on thenegative (-) terminal of the boostervehicle battery.
3. Remove the jumper cable from thepositive (+) terminal of the booster vehiclebattery.
4. Remove the jumper cable from thepositive (+) terminal of the disabledvehicle battery.
5. Allow the engine to idle for at least oneminute.
POST-CRASH ALERT SYSTEM
The system flashes the direction indicatorsand sounds the horn (intermittently) in theevent of a serious impact that deploys anairbag (front, side, side curtain or SafetyCanopy) or the seatbelt pretensioners.
The horn and indicators turn off when:
•You press the hazard control button.
•You press the panic button on the remoteentry transmitter (if equipped).
