When driving through standing water, drivevery slowly and do not stop your vehicle. Your brake performance and traction maybe limited. After driving through water andas soon as it is safe to do so:
•Lightly press the brake pedal to dry thebrakes and to check that they work.
•Check that the horn works.
•Check that the exterior lights work.
•Turn the steering wheel to check that thesteering power assist works.
FLOOR MATS
WARNINGS
Use a floor mat designed to fit thefootwell of your vehicle that does notobstruct the pedal area. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in the loss of controlof your vehicle, personal injury or death.
Pedals that cannot move freely cancause loss of vehicle control andincrease the risk of serious personal injury.
Secure the floor mat to both retentiondevices so that it cannot slip out ofposition and interfere with the pedals. Failureto follow this instruction could result in theloss of control of your vehicle, personal injuryor death.
Do not place additional floor mats orany other covering on top of theoriginal floor mats. This could result in thefloor mat interfering with the operation of thepedals. Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in the loss of control of your vehicle,personal injury or death.
WARNINGS
Always make sure that objects cannotfall into the driver foot well while yourvehicle is moving. Objects that are loose canbecome trapped under the pedals causinga loss of vehicle control.
To install the floor mats, position the floormat eyelet over the retention post and pressdown to lock in position.
To remove the floor mat, reverse theinstallation procedure.
Note:Regularly check the floor mats to makesure they are secure.

Note: When you try to restart your vehicleafter a fuel shutoff, the vehicle makes surethat various systems are safe to restart. Once the vehicle determines the systemsare safe, then the vehicle allows you torestart.
Note:In the event that your vehicle does notrestart after your third attempt, contact aqualified technician.
The fuel pump shutoff stops the flow of fuelto the engine in the event of a moderate tosevere crash. Not every impact causes ashutoff.
Should your vehicle shut off after a crash,you may restart your vehicle.
1. Press START/STOP to switch off yourvehicle.
2.Press the brake pedal and START/STOPto switch on your vehicle.
3. Check the information display for theReady to Drive light as the gasolineengine may not start, but the electricmotor may be running. If you do not seethe Ready to Drive light, repeat Steps 1and 2 up to two more times.
JUMP STARTING THE VEHICLE
WARNINGS
Batteries normally produce explosivegases which can cause personal injury.Therefore, do not allow flames, sparks orlighted substances to come near the battery.When working near the battery, always shieldyour face and protect your eyes. Alwaysprovide correct ventilation.
Keep batteries out of reach of children.Batteries contain sulfuric acid. Avoidcontact with skin, eyes or clothing. Shieldyour eyes when working near the battery toprotect against possible splashing of acidsolution. In case of acid contact with skin oreyes, flush immediately with water for aminimum of 15 minutes and get promptmedical attention. If acid is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.
Use only adequately sized cables withinsulated clamps.
Preparing Your Vehicle
Do not attempt to push-start your automatictransmission vehicle.
Note:Attempting to push-start a vehicle withan automatic transmission may causetransmission damage.
Note:Use only a 12-volt supply to start yourvehicle.
Note:Do not disconnect the battery of thedisabled vehicle as this could damage thevehicle electrical system.
Park the booster vehicle close to the hoodof the disabled vehicle, making sure the twovehicles do not touch.
Connecting the Jumper Cables
WARNINGS
Do not connect the end of the secondcable to the negative (-) terminal of thebattery to be jumped. A spark may cause anexplosion of the gases that surround thebattery.

Note:Make sure you remove the cap fromthe positive prong on your vehicle beforeconnecting the cables.
1. Connect the positive (+) jumper cable tothe positive (+) terminal of the dischargedbattery.
2.Connect the other end of the positive (+)cable to the positive (+) terminal of thebooster vehicle battery.
3. Connect the negative (-) cable to thenegative (-) terminal of the boostervehicle battery.
4.Make the final connection of the negative(-) cable to an exposed metal part of thestalled vehicle's engine, away from thebattery and the fuel injection system, orconnect the negative (-) cable to a groundconnection point if available.
Jump Starting
1. Start the engine of the booster vehicleand rev the engine moderately, or pressthe accelerator gently to keep yourengine speed between 2000 and 3000RPM, as shown in your tachometer.
2. Start the disabled vehicle.
3. Check the instrument cluster for theReady to Drive light as the gasolineengine may not start, but the electricmotor may be running.
4. Once you start the disabled vehicle, runboth vehicles for an additional threeminutes before disconnecting the jumpercables.
Removing the Jumper Cables
Note:After you disconnect the jumpercables, let the disabled vehicle sit in Readyto Drive mode for several minutes to chargethe 12V battery. The disabled vehiclecharges the 12V battery even if the gasolineengine may be off. The 12V battery receivespower from the high-voltage battery instead.
Remove the jumper cables in the reverseorder that they were connected.
1. Remove the negative (-) jumper cablefrom the disabled vehicle.

Only use oils certified for gasoline enginesby the American Petroleum Institute (API).An oil with this trademark symbol conformsto the current engine and emission systemprotection standards and fuel economyrequirements of the International LubricantsSpecification Advisory Committee (ILSAC).
1. Remove the filler cap.
2. Add engine oil that meets the Fordspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 358).
3. Replace the filler cap. Turn it until youfeel a strong resistance.

ENGINE COOLANT CHECK
WARNINGS
Never remove the coolant reservoircap when the engine is running or hot.
Do not put coolant in the windshieldwasher reservoir. If sprayed on thewindshield, coolant could make it difficult tosee through the windshield.
To reduce the risk of personal injury,make sure the engine is cool beforeunscrewing the coolant pressure relief cap.The cooling system is under pressure. Steamand hot liquid can come out forcefully whenyou loosen the cap slightly.

If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.
To top up the coolant level do the following:
1. Unscrew the cap slowly. Any pressureescapes as you unscrew the cap.
2. Add prediluted coolant approved to thecorrect specification. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 358).
3.Add enough prediluted coolant to reachthe correct level.
4. Replace the coolant reservoir cap, turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
5. Check the coolant level in the coolantreservoir the next few times you driveyour vehicle. If necessary, add enoughprediluted engine coolant to bring thecoolant level to the correct level.
If you have to add more than 1.1 qt (1 L) ofengine coolant per month, have your vehiclechecked as soon as possible. Operating anengine with a low level of coolant can resultin engine overheating and possible enginedamage.
Note:During normal vehicle operation, thecoolant may change color from orange topink or light red. As long as the coolant isclear and uncontaminated, this color changedoes not indicate the coolant has degradednor does it require the coolant to be drained,the system to be flushed, or the coolant tobe replaced.
In case of emergency, you can add a largeamount of water without engine coolant inorder to reach a vehicle service location. Inthis instance, qualified personnel:
1. Must drain the cooling system.
2. Chemically clean the cooling system.
3. Refill with prediluted coolant as soon aspossible.
Water alone, without coolant, can causeengine damage from corrosion, overheatingor freezing.
Do not use the following as a coolantsubstitute:
•Alcohol.
•Methanol.
•Brine.
•Any coolant mixed with alcohol ormethanol antifreeze.
Alcohol and other liquids can cause enginedamage from overheating or freezing.
Do not add extra inhibitors or additives tothe coolant. These can be harmful andcompromise the corrosion protection of thecoolant.
Recycled Coolant
We do not recommend the use of recycledcoolant as an approved recycling process isnot yet available.
Dispose of used engine coolant in anappropriate manner. Follow yourcommunity's regulations and standards forrecycling and disposing of automotive fluids.

WARNINGS
Only use brake fluid from a sealedcontainer. Contamination with dirt,water, petroleum products or other materialsmay result in brake system damage or failure.Failure to adhere to this warning could resultin the loss of vehicle control, seriouspersonal injury or death.
Do not allow the fluid to touch yourskin or eyes. If this happens, rinse theaffected areas immediately with plenty ofwater and contact your physician.
A fluid level between the MAX andMIN lines is within the normaloperating range and there is no need to addfluid. A fluid level not in the normal operatingrange could compromise the performanceof the system. Have your vehicle checkedimmediately.
To avoid fluid contamination, the reservoircap must remain in place and fully tight,unless you are adding fluid.
Only use fluid that meets Ford specifications.See Capacities and Specifications (page358).
WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING
If you operate your vehicle intemperatures below 41.0°F (5°C), usewasher fluid with antifreeze protection.Failure to use washer fluid with antifreezeprotection in cold weather could result inimpaired windshield vision and increase therisk of injury or accident.
Note:The front and rear washer systemsare supplied from the same reservoir.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level is low.Only use a washer fluid that meets Fordspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 358).
State or local regulations on volatile organiccompounds may restrict the use of methanol,a common windshield washer antifreezeadditive. Washer fluids containingnon-methanol antifreeze agents should beused only if they provide cold weatherprotection without damaging the vehicle’spaint finish, wiper blades or washer system.
FUEL FILTER
Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuelfilter that is integrated with the fuel tank.Regular maintenance or replacement is notneeded.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNINGS
Batteries normally produce explosivegases which can cause personal injury.Therefore, do not allow flames, sparks orlighted substances to come near the battery.When working near the battery, always shieldyour face and protect your eyes. Alwaysprovide correct ventilation.
When lifting a plastic-cased battery,excessive pressure on the end wallscould cause acid to flow through the ventcaps, resulting in personal injury and damageto the vehicle or battery. Lift the battery witha battery carrier or with your hands onopposite corners.

1. Pull the wiper blade and arm away fromthe glass. Press the locking buttonstogether.
2. Slightly rotate the wiper blade.
3. Remove the wiper blade.
4. Install in the reverse order.
Note:Make sure that the wiper blade locksinto place.
ADJUSTING THE HEADLAMPS
Vertical Aim Adjustment
The headlamps on your vehicle are properlyaimed at the assembly plant. If your vehiclehas been in an accident, the alignment ofyour headlamps should be checked by yourauthorized dealer.

Vertical Aim Adjustment Procedure
1.Park the vehicle directly in front of a wallor screen on a level surface,approximately 25 ft (7.6 m) away.
2.Measure the height of the headlamp bulbcenter from the ground and mark an 8 ft(2.4 m) horizontal reference line on thevertical wall or screen at this height.
Note:To see a clearer light pattern foradjusting, you may want to block the lightfrom one headlamp while adjusting theother.
3. Turn on the low beam headlamps toilluminate the wall or screen and openthe hood.

4.On the wall or screen you will observe aflat zone of high intensity light located atthe top of the right hand portion of thebeam pattern. If the top edge of the highintensity light zone is not at the horizontalreference line, the headlamp will needto be adjusted.
5. Locate the vertical adjuster on eachheadlamp. Using a Phillips #2screwdriver, turn the adjuster eitherclockwise or counterclockwise in orderto adjust the vertical aim of theheadlamp. The horizontal edge of thebrighter light should touch the horizontalreference line.
6. Close the hood and turn off the lamps.
Horizontal Aim Adjustment
The horizontal aim does not require anyadjustment for this vehicle. If a fault occurs,have the system checked by an authorizeddealer.
CHANGING A BULB
Lamp Assembly Condensation
Exterior lamps are vented to accommodatenormal changes in pressure. Condensationcan be a natural by-product of this design.When moist air enters the lamp assemblythrough the vents, there is a possibility thatcondensation can occur when thetemperature is cold. When normalcondensation occurs, a thin film of mist canform on the interior of the lens. The thin misteventually clears and exits through the ventsduring normal operation. Clearing time maytake as long as 48 hours under dry weatherconditions.
Examples of acceptable condensation are:
•Presence of thin mist (no streaks, dripmarks or droplets).
•Fine mist covers less than 50% of thelens.
Examples of unacceptable moisture (usuallycaused by a lamp water leak) are:
•Water puddle inside the lamp.
•Large water droplets, drip marks orstreaks present on the interior of the lens.
Take your vehicle to a dealer for service ifany of the above conditions of unacceptablemoisture are present.
