Recommendations for Safety Restraints for Children
Recommended restraint typeChild size, height, weight, or ageChild
Use a child safety seat (sometimes called aninfant carrier, convertible seat, or toddlerseat).
Children weighing 40 lb (18 kg) or less (generally age four oryounger).Infants or toddlers
Use a belt-positioning booster seat.
Children who have outgrown or no longer properly fit in a childsafety seat (generally children who are less than 4 ft. 9 in. (1.45 m)tall, are greater than age four and less than age 12, and between40 lb (18 kg) and 80 lb (36 kg) and upward to 100 lb (45 kg) ifrecommended by your child restraint manufacturer).
Small children
Use a vehicle safety belt having the lap beltsnug and low across the hips, shoulder beltcentered across the shoulder and chest, andseatback upright.
Children who have outgrown or no longer properly fit in a belt-positioning booster seat (generally children who are at least 4 ft.9 in. (1.45 m) tall or greater than 80 lb (36 kg) or 100 lb (45 kg) ifrecommended by child restraint manufacturer).

Your vehicle has LATCH lower anchors forchild restraint installation at the seatingpositions marked with the child restraintsymbol.
The LATCH anchors are at the rear sectionof the rear seat between the cushion andseatback below the symbols as shown.Follow the child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions to properly install a child restraintwith LATCH attachments. Follow theinstructions on attaching child safety seatswith tether straps.
Attach LATCH lower attachments of the childrestraint only to the anchors shown.
Use of Inboard Lower Anchors from theOutboard Seating Positions (Center SeatingUse)
WARNING
The standardized spacing for LATCHlower anchors is 11 in (280 mm) centerto center. Do not use LATCH lower anchorsfor the center seating position unless thechild restraint manufacturer's instructionspermit and specify using anchors spaced atleast as far apart as those in this vehicle.
The lower anchors at the center of thesecond row rear seat are spaced 18 in(46 cm) apart. You cannot install a childrestraint with rigid LATCH attachments at thecenter seating position. You can only useLATCH compatible child restraints (withattachments on belt webbing) at this seatingposition provided that the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions permit use withthe anchor spacing stated. Do not attach achild restraint to any lower anchor if anadjacent child restraint is attached to thatanchor.
Each time you use the safety seat, check thatthe seat is properly attached to the loweranchors and tether anchor, if applicable. Tugthe child restraint from side to side andforward and back where it is secured to yourvehicle. The seat should move less than 1 in(2.5 cm) when you do this for a properinstallation.
If the safety seat is not anchored properly, the risk of a child being injured in a crashgreatly increases.

Combining Seatbelt and LATCH LowerAnchors for Attaching Child Safety Seats
When used in combination, either theseatbelt or the LATCH lower anchors maybe attached first, provided a properinstallation is achieved. Attach the tetherstrap afterward, if included with the childrestraint.
Using Tether Straps
Many forward-facing child safetyseats include a tether strap whichextends from the back of the childsafety seat and hooks to an anchoring pointcalled the top tether anchor. Tether strapsare available as an accessory for many oldersafety seats.
Contact the manufacturer of your childrestraint for information about ordering atether strap, or to obtain a longer tether strapif the tether strap on your safety seat doesnot reach the appropriate top tether anchorin your vehicle.
Once you install the child safety seat usingeither the seatbelt, the lower anchors of theLATCH system, or both, you can attach thetop tether strap.
The tether strap anchors in your vehicle arein the following positions (shown from topview):
Perform the following steps to install a childsafety seat with tether anchors:
Note:If you install a child restraint with rigidLATCH attachments, do not tighten thetether strap enough to lift the child restraintoff your vehicle seat cushion when the childis seated in it. Keep the tether strap just snugwithout lifting the front of the child restraint.Keeping the child restraint just touching yourvehicle seat gives the best protection in asevere crash.
1. Route the child safety seat tether strapover the back of the seat. For outboardseating positions, route the tether strapunder the head restraint and betweenthe head restraint posts. For the centerseating positions, route the tether strapover the top of the head restraint. Ifneeded, the head restraints can also beremoved.

•Does the lap belt rest low across thehips?
•Is the shoulder belt centered on theshoulder and chest?
•Can the child stay seated like this for thewhole trip?
Always use booster seats in conjunction withyour vehicle lap and shoulder belt.
Types of Booster Seats
•Backless booster seats
If your backless booster seat has aremovable shield, remove the shield. If avehicle seating position has a low seat backor no head restraint, a backless booster seatmay place your child's head (as measured atthe tops of the ears) above the top of theseat. In this case, move the backless boosterto another seating position with a higher seatback or head restraint and lap and shoulderbelts, or consider using a high back boosterseat.
•High back booster seats
If, with a backless booster seat, you cannotfind a seating position that adequatelysupports your child's head, a high backbooster seat would be a better choice.
Children and booster seats vary in size andshape. Choose a booster that keeps the lapbelt low and snug across the hips, never upacross the stomach, and lets you adjust theshoulder belt to cross the chest and restsnugly near the center of the shoulder. Thefollowing drawings compare the ideal fit(center) to a shoulder belt uncomfortablyclose to the neck and a shoulder belt thatcould slip off the shoulder. The drawings alsoshow how the lap belt should be low andsnug across the child's hips.

Pregnant women should always wear theirseatbelt. Position the lap belt portion of acombination lap and shoulder belt low acrossthe hips below the belly and worn as tightas comfort allows. Position the shoulder beltto cross the middle of the shoulder and thecenter of the chest.
Seatbelt Locking Modes
WARNING
After a crash, have a qualifiedtechnician check all the seatbelts tomake sure the seatbelts including theautomatic locking retractor feature for childrestraints operate properly. We recommendreplacing any system that has damage ordoes not operate properly. Failure to do socan result in personal injury or death in theevent of a sudden stop or another crash.
All safety restraints in the vehicle arecombination lap and shoulder belts. Thedriver seatbelt has the vehicle sensitivelocking mode. The front outboard passengerand rear seatbelts have both the vehiclesensitive locking mode and the automaticlocking mode.
Vehicle Sensitive Mode
This is the normal retractor mode, whichallows free shoulder belt length adjustmentto your movements and locking in responseto vehicle movement. For example, if thedriver brakes suddenly or turns a cornersharply, or the vehicle receives an impact ofabout 5 mph (8 km/h) or more, thecombination seatbelts lock to help reduceforward movement of the driver andpassengers.
In addition, the retractor is designed to lockif you pull the webbing out too quickly. If theseatbelt retractor locks, slowly lower theheight adjuster to allow the seatbelt toretract. If the retractor does not unlock, pullthe seatbelt out slowly then feed a smalllength of webbing back toward the stowedposition. For rear seatbelts, recline the rearseat backrest or push the seat backrestcushion away from the seatbelt. Feed a smalllength of webbing back toward the stowedposition.

Proper Driver and Front PassengerSeating Adjustment
WARNING
National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration (NHTSA) recommendsa minimum distance of at least 10 in (25 cm)between an occupant's chest and the driverairbag module.
To properly position yourself away from theairbag:
•Move your seat to the rear as far as youcan while still reaching the pedalscomfortably.
•Recline the seat slightly (one or twodegrees) from the upright position.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seatback, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increase
the chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down, turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash is greatlyincreased.
Children and Airbags
WARNING
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front of an activeairbag. If you must use a forward-facing childrestraint in the front seat, move the seat uponwhich the child restraint is installed all theway back.
Children must always be properly restrained.Accident statistics suggest that children aresafer when properly restrained in the rearseating positions than in the front seatingposition. Failure to follow these instructionsmay increase the risk of injury in a crash.

FRONT PASSENGER SENSING
SYSTEM
WARNINGS
Even with advanced restraints systems, properly restrain children 12 and underin a rear seating position. Failure to followthis could seriously increase the risk of injuryor death.
Sitting improperly, out of position orwith the seatback reclined too far cantake weight off the seat cushion and affectthe decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
Any alteration or modification to thefront passenger seat may affect theperformance of the front passenger sensingsystem. This could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
This system works with sensors that are partof the front passenger seat and seatbelt todetect the presence of a properly-seatedoccupant and determine if the frontpassenger’s frontal airbag should be enabled(may inflate) or not.
The front passenger sensing system uses apassenger airbag status indicator thatilluminates indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either ON(enabled) or OFF (disabled).
The indicator lamp is in the center stack ofthe instrument panel.
Note:The passenger airbag status indicatorOFF and ON indicator lamps illuminate fora short period of time when you first switchthe ignition on to confirm it is functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag when the frontpassenger seat is unoccupied, or a rearfacing infant seat, a forward-facing childrestraint, or a booster seat is detected. Evenwith this technology, parents are stronglyencouraged to always properly restrainchildren in the rear seat. The sensor alsoturns off the passenger front airbag whenthe passenger seat is empty.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag, the passengerairbag status indicator will illuminate theOFF lamp and stay lit to remind you thatthe front passenger frontal airbag isdisabled.
•If the child restraint has been installedand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the ON lamp, then turn thevehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom the vehicle and reinstall the restraintfollowing the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.

The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to enable (may inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag anytime the systemsenses that a person of adult size is sittingproperly in the front passenger seat.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem enables the front passengerfrontal airbag (may inflate), the passengerairbag status indicator will illuminate theON lamp and remain illuminated.
If a person of adult size is sitting in the frontpassenger seat, but the airbag off indicatorlamp is lit, it is possible that the person isn’tsitting properly in the seat. If this happens:
•Turn the vehicle off and ask the personto place the seat back in the full uprightposition.
•Have the person sit upright in the seat, centered on the seat cushion, with theperson’s legs comfortably extended.
•Restart the vehicle and have the personremain in this position for about twominutes. This will allow the system todetect that person and enable thepassenger’s frontal airbag.
•If the indicator OFF lamp remains lit evenafter this, the person should be advisedto ride in the rear seat.

The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat may appear heavier or lighterdue to the conditions described in the listabove.
To know if the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly, See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 55).
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle immediately to anauthorized dealer.
If it is necessary to modify an advanced frontairbag system to accommodate a personwith disabilities, contact the Ford CustomerRelationship Center. See Getting theServices You Need (page 273).
SIDE AIRBAGS
WARNINGS
Do not place objects or mountequipment on or near the airbag cover,on the side of the seatbacks (of the frontseats), or in front seat areas that may comeinto contact with a deploying airbag. Failureto follow these instructions may increase therisk of personal injury in the event of a crash.
Do not use accessory seat covers. Theuse of accessory seat covers mayprevent the deployment of the side airbagsand increase the risk of injury in an accident.
Do not lean your head on the door. Theside airbag could injure you as itdeploys from the side of the seatback.
WARNINGS
Do not attempt to service, repair, ormodify the seat airbag supplementalrestraint systems, its fuses or the seat coveron a vehicle containing seat airbags as youcould be seriously injured or killed. Contactyour authorized dealer as soon as possible.
If the side airbag has deployed, theairbag will not function again. The sideairbag system (including the seat) must beinspected as soon as possible. If the airbagis not replaced, the unrepaired area willincrease the risk of injury in a crash.
The side airbags are on the outboard sideof the seatbacks of the front seats. In certainsideways crashes, the side airbags will beinflated. The airbag was designed to inflatebetween the door panel and occupant tofurther enhance the protection providedoccupants in side impact crashes.
