Lights when you switch on thegrade assist function.
Heads Up Display (If Equipped)
A red beam of lights appears onthe windshield in certain instanceswhen using adaptive cruise controland/or the collision warning system. To makesure the display works, it will also appearmomentarily when you start your vehicle.
Headlamp High Beam Indicator
Lights when you switch on thehigh-beam headlamps. Flasheswhen you use the headlampflasher.
Hood Ajar
Lights when the ignition is on andthe hood is not completely closed.
Lane Keeping System Lamp (If Equipped)
Lights when you activate the lanekeeping system.
Low Fuel Level Warning Lamp
Lights when the fuel level is low orthe fuel tank is nearly empty. Refuel as soon as possible.
Low Tire Pressure Warning Lamp
It illuminates when your tirepressure is low. If the lamp remainson with the engine running orwhen driving, check your tire pressure assoon as possible.
It also illuminates momentarily when youswitch the ignition on to confirm the lamp isfunctional. If it does not illuminate when youswitch the ignition on, or begins to flash atany time, have the system checked by yourauthorized dealer.
Low Washer Fluid Level Warning Lamp
Lights when the windshield washerfluid is low.
Parking Lamps
Lights when you switch on theparking lamps.
Powertrain Fault
Lights when your vehicle detectsa powertrain fault. Contact anauthorized dealer as soon aspossible.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Do not overfill the fuel tank.The pressure in an overfilled tank may causeleakage and lead to fuel spray and fire.
WARNING: The fuel system may beunder pressure. If you hear a hissing soundnear the fuel filler inlet, do not refuel until thesound stops. Otherwise, fuel may spray out,which could cause serious personal injury.
WARNING: Fuels can cause seriousinjury or death if misused or mishandled.
WARNING: Fuel may contain benzene,which is a cancer-causing agent.
WARNING: When refueling always shutthe engine off and never allow sparks oropen flames near the fuel tank filler valve.Never smoke or use a cell phone whilerefueling. Fuel vapor is extremely hazardousunder certain conditions. Avoid inhalingexcess fumes.
Follow these guidelines when refueling:
•Extinguish all smoking materials and anyopen flames before refueling yourvehicle.
•Always switch the engine off beforerefueling.
•Automotive fuels can be harmful or fatalif swallowed. Fuel is highly toxic and ifswallowed can cause death or permanentinjury. If fuel is swallowed immediatelycall a physician, even if no symptoms areimmediately apparent. The toxic effectsof fuel may not be apparent for hours.
•Avoid inhaling fuel vapors. Inhaling fuelvapor can lead to eye and respiratorytract irritation. In severe cases, excessiveor prolonged breathing of fuel vapor cancause serious illness and permanentinjury.
•Avoid getting fuel in your eyes. If yousplash fuel in your eyes, immediatelyremove contact lenses (if worn), flush withwater for 15 minutes and seek medicalattention. Failure to seek proper medicalattention could lead to permanent injury.
•Fuels can be harmful if absorbed throughthe skin. If you splash fuel on your skin,clothing or both, promptly removecontaminated clothing and thoroughlywash your skin with soap and water.Repeated or prolonged skin contactcauses skin irritation.
•Be particularly careful if you are takingAntabuse or other forms of Disulfiram forthe treatment of alcoholism. Breathingfuel vapors could cause an adversereaction, serious personal injury orsickness. Immediately call a physician ifyou experience any adverse reactions.

WARNING: Do not try to pry open orpush open the capless fuel system withforeign objects. This could damage the fuelsystem and its seal and cause injury to youor others.
Note:Do not use aftermarket funnels; theywill not work with the capless fuel systemand can damage it. The included speciallydesigned funnel works safely with yourvehicle.
When filling the vehicle’s fuel tank from aportable fuel container, use the funnelincluded with the vehicle.
The funnel is located in the rear of thevehicle, inside the load compartment,underneath the load floor carpet and isaccessible from the trunk.
1. Locate the portable funnel that comeswith your vehicle.
2. Slowly insert the funnel into the caplessfuel system.
3.Fill the vehicle with fuel from the portablefuel container.
4.When done, clean the funnel or properlydispose of it. You can purchase extrafunnels from your authorized dealer ifyou choose to dispose of the funnel.

WARNING: Stop refueling when thefuel pump nozzle automatically shuts off forthe first time. Failure to follow this will fill theexpansion space in the fuel tank and couldlead to fuel overflowing.
WARNING: Wait at least 10 secondsbefore removing the fuel pump nozzle toallow any residual fuel to drain into the fueltank.
WARNING: The fuel system may beunder pressure. If you hear a hissing soundnear the fuel filler inlet, do not refuel until thesound stops. Otherwise, fuel may spray out,which could cause serious personal injury.
WARNING: Read and follow all theinstructions on the pump island.
1. When you stop your vehicle, shift intopark (P) or neutral (N) and switch theignition off.

2. Press the button on the driver door toopen the fuel filler door. The fuel fillerdoor can take up to 15 seconds to openbefore you can insert a fuel filler nozzle.

Impacting Fuel Economy
•Incorrect tire inflation pressures.
•Fully loading your vehicle.
•Carrying unnecessary weight.
•Adding certain accessories to yourvehicle such as bug deflectors, rollbarsor light bars, running boards and skiracks.
•Using fuel blended with alcohol. SeeFuel Quality (page 177).
•Fuel economy may decrease with lowertemperatures.
•Fuel economy may decrease whendriving short distances.
•You may get better fuel economy whendriving on flat terrain than when drivingon hilly terrain.

Fuel and Refueling

Regenerative Braking System
This feature is used to simulate the enginebraking of an internal combustion engineand assist the standard brake system whilerecovering some of the energy of motion andstoring it in the battery to improve fueleconomy. The standard brake system isdesigned to fully stop the car if regenerativebraking is not available. During regenerativebraking, the motor is spun as a generator tocreate electrical current. This recharges thebattery and slows the vehicle. In effect, oncethe accelerator pedal is released, the motorchanges from an energy user to an energyproducer.
When you release the accelerator pedal orpress the brake pedal, the brake controllerautomatically detects the amount ofdeceleration requested and optimizes howmuch of the deceleration will be producedby regenerative braking. The remainingportion is generated by standard frictionbraking. When the battery is almost fullycharged, the amount of regenerative brakingis limited to avoid overcharging, and therequested deceleration is produced bystandard friction braking alone.
Regenerative braking does not take theplace of the standard friction brakes; it onlyassists them. Regenerative braking has alsobeen designed to interact with the anti-lockbrake system. Regenerative braking isdisabled when the anti-lock brake system isactivated or the battery is fully charged.
HINTS ON DRIVING WITH ANTI-
LOCK BRAKES
The anti-lock braking system does noteliminate the risks when:
•You drive too closely to the vehicle infront of you.
•Your vehicle is hydroplaning.
•You take corners too fast.
•The road surface is poor.
Note: If the system activates, the brakepedal may pulse and may travel further. Maintain pressure on the brake pedal. Youmay also hear a noise from the system. Thisis normal.
ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE
WARNING: Always fully apply theparking brake and make sure you shift intopark (P). Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
WARNING: If you drive extendeddistances with the parking brake applied,you could cause damage to the brakesystem.
WARNING: The electric parking brakedoes not operate if the vehicle battery isrunning out of charge.
Your vehicle has an electric parking brake.You operate it with a switch instead of alever. The switch is on the center console orto the left-hand side of the steering wheel,on the lower part of the instrument panel.
Note:The electric parking brake makesnoises during operation. This is normal.

Only use fluid that meets Ford specifications.See Capacities and Specifications (page353).
WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING: If you operate your vehiclein temperatures below 41.0°F (5°C), usewasher fluid with antifreeze protection.Failure to use washer fluid with antifreezeprotection in cold weather could result inimpaired windshield vision and increase therisk of injury or accident.
Note:The front and rear washer systemsare supplied from the same reservoir.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level is low.Only use a washer fluid that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 353).
State or local regulations on volatile organiccompounds may restrict the use of methanol,a common windshield washer antifreezeadditive. Washer fluids containingnon-methanol antifreeze agents should beused only if they provide cold weatherprotection without damaging the vehicle’spaint finish, wiper blades or washer system.
FUEL FILTER
Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuelfilter that is integrated with the fuel tank.Regular maintenance or replacement is notneeded.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNING: Batteries normally produceexplosive gases which can cause personalinjury. Therefore, do not allow flames, sparksor lighted substances to come near thebattery. When working near the battery,always shield your face and protect youreyes. Always provide correct ventilation.
WARNING: When lifting a plastic-casedbattery, excessive pressure on the end wallscould cause acid to flow through the ventcaps, resulting in personal injury and damageto the vehicle or battery. Lift the battery witha battery carrier or with your hands onopposite corners.
WARNING: Keep batteries out of reachof children. Batteries contain sulfuric acid.Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing.Shield your eyes when working near thebattery to protect against possible splashingof acid solution. In case of acid contact withskin or eyes, flush immediately with waterfor a minimum of 15 minutes and get promptmedical attention. If acid is swallowed, call aphysician immediately.
WARNING: Battery posts, terminalsand related accessories contain lead andlead compounds. Wash hands after handling.

Maintenance

Note: You should only use tire sealants inroadside emergencies as they may causedamage to the tire pressure monitoringsystem sensor.
Note: If the tire pressure monitoring systemsensor becomes damaged, it may notfunction.
Each tire, including the spare (ifprovided), should be checkedmonthly when cold and inflated tothe inflation pressure recommended by thevehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placardor tire inflation pressure label. (If your vehiclehas tires of a different size than the sizeindicated on the vehicle placard or tireinflation pressure label, you shoulddetermine the proper tire inflation pressurefor those tires).
As an added safety feature, your vehicle hasbeen equipped with a Tire PressureMonitoring System (TPMS) that illuminates alow tire pressure telltale when one or moreof your tires is significantly under-inflated.Accordingly, when the low tire pressuretelltale illuminates, you should stop andcheck your tires as soon as possible, and
inflate them to the proper pressure. Drivingon a significantly under-inflated tire causesthe tire to overheat and can lead to tirefailure. Under-inflation also reduces fuelefficiency and tire tread life, and may affectthe vehicle’s handling and stopping ability.
Please note that the TPMS is not a substitutefor proper tire maintenance, and it is thedriver’s responsibility to maintain correct tirepressure, even if under-inflation has notreached the level to trigger illumination ofthe TPMS low tire pressure telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with aTPMS malfunction indicator to indicate whenthe system is not operating properly. TheTPMS malfunction indicator is combined withthe low tire pressure telltale. When thesystem detects a malfunction, the telltale willflash for approximately one minute and thenremain continuously illuminated. Thissequence will continue upon subsequentvehicle start-ups as long as the malfunctionexists.
When the malfunction indicator is illuminated,the system may not be able to detect orsignal low tire pressure as intended. TPMSmalfunctions may occur for a variety ofreasons, including the installation ofreplacement or alternate tires or wheels onthe vehicle that prevent the TPMS fromfunctioning properly. Always check the TPMSmalfunction telltale after replacing one ormore tires or wheels on your vehicle toensure that the replacement or alternate tiresand wheels allow the TPMS to continue tofunction properly.
