AUTOWIPERS
Note:Fully defrost the windshield before youswitch the windshield wipers on.
Note:Make sure you switch the windshieldwipers off before entering a car wash.
Note: If streaks or smears appear on thewindshield, clean the windshield and thewiper blades. If that does not resolve theissue, install new wiper blades.
Note:If you switch autolamps andautowipers on, the headlamps automaticallyturn on when the windshield wiperscontinuously operate.
Wet or winter driving conditions with ice,snow or salty road mist can causeinconsistent and unexpected wiping orsmearing.

Use the rotary control to adjust the sensitivityof the autowipers. When you select lowsensitivity, the wipers operate when thesensor detects a large amount of water onthe windshield. When you select highsensitivity, the wipers operate when thesensor detects a small amount of water onthe windshield.
Keep the outside of the windshield clean. The rain sensor is very sensitive and thewipers may operate if dirt, mist or insects hitthe windshield.
In these conditions, you can do the following:
•Lower the sensitivity of the autowipersto reduce the amount of smearing on thewindshield.
•Switch to normal or high-speed wipe.
•Switch autowipers off.
Autowipers Settings
Autowipers default to on and remain on untilyou switch them off in the informationdisplay. When you switch off autowipers, thewipers operate in intermittent mode. SeeGeneral Information (page 120).
Low Temperature Wipe Inhibit
The rain sensing feature will not operatewhen you place the vehicle in RUN position,the vehicle is stationary and the outsidetemperature is below 32°F (0°C). You canmanually switch on the wipers by adjustingthe rain sensor sensitivity or adjusting thewiper speed.
This prevents damage to the wipers from iceand snow on the windshield.

Maintaining Your Head Up Display
•Do not place objects onto the transparentcover, as they may block you from seeingportions of the image. These objectscould also damage the cover and affectthe quality of the projected image.
•The system uses a special windshielddesigned to provide the optimum imagequality. You must replace the windshieldin a vehicle with this system with acertified original equipmentmanufactured (OEM) head up displaywindshield. Replacing this system'swindshield with a non-head up displaywindshield causes a double image ordistorted image. Have an authorizeddealer or authorized repair facility replacethe windshield.
•Light conditions such as oncomingheadlamps, sunrise, sunset or reflectionsoff of wet road surfaces can affect thedriver's ability to see the HUD image.
•Clean the windshield often for optimalHUD performance. See Cleaning theWindows and Wiper Blades (page 381).

HEATED WINDSHIELD (IF EQUIPPED)
Windshield Wiper De-Icer
The windshield wiper de-icer turns on in lowtemperatures.
HEATED REAR WINDOW
Press the button to clear the rearwindow of thin ice and fog. Theheated rear window turns off aftera short period of time.
Note:Make sure the engine is on beforeoperating the heated windows.
Note: Do not use razor blades or othersharp objects to clean or remove decals fromthe inside of the heated rear window. Thevehicle Warranty may not cover damagecaused to the heated rear window grid lines.
HEATED EXTERIOR MIRRORS
When you switch the heated rear windowon, the heated exterior mirrors turn on.
Note:Do not remove ice from the mirrorswith a scraper or adjust the mirror glasswhen it is frozen in place.
Note:Do not clean the mirror housing orglass with harsh abrasives, fuel or otherpetroleum-based cleaning products. Thevehicle warranty may not cover damagecaused to the mirror housing or glass.
CABIN AIR FILTER
Your vehicle is equipped with a cabin airfilter, which gives you and your passengersthe following benefits:
•It improves your driving comfort byreducing particle concentration.
•It improves the interior compartmentcleanliness.
•It protects the climate controlcomponents from particle deposits.
You can locate the cabin air filter behind theglove box.
Note:Make sure you have a cabin air filterinstalled at all times. This prevents foreignobjects from entering the system. Runningthe system without a filter in place couldresult in degradation or damage to thesystem.

Climate Control

WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING: If you operate yourvehicle in temperatures below 41.0°F (5°C),use washer fluid with antifreeze protection.Failure to use washer fluid with antifreezeprotection in cold weather could result inimpaired windshield vision and increasethe risk of injury or accident.
Note:The front and rear washer systemsare supplied from the same reservoir.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level is low.Only use a washer fluid that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 418).
State or local regulations on volatile organiccompounds may restrict the use of methanol,a common windshield washer antifreezeadditive. Washer fluids containingnon-methanol antifreeze agents should beused only if they provide cold weatherprotection without damaging the vehicle’spaint finish, wiper blades or washer system.
FUEL FILTER
Your vehicle is equipped with a lifetime fuelfilter that is integrated with the fuel tank.Regular maintenance or replacement is notneeded.
CHANGING THE 12V BATTERY
WARNING: Batteries normallyproduce explosive gases which can causepersonal injury. Therefore, do not allowflames, sparks or lighted substances tocome near the battery. When working nearthe battery, always shield your face andprotect your eyes. Always provide correctventilation.
WARNING: When lifting aplastic-cased battery, excessive pressureon the end walls could cause acid to flowthrough the vent caps, resulting in personalinjury and damage to the vehicle or battery.Lift the battery with a battery carrier or withyour hands on opposite corners.
WARNING: Keep batteries out ofreach of children. Batteries contain sulfuricacid. Avoid contact with skin, eyes orclothing. Shield your eyes when workingnear the battery to protect against possiblesplashing of acid solution. In case of acidcontact with skin or eyes, flush immediatelywith water for a minimum of 15 minutes andget prompt medical attention. If acid isswallowed, call a physician immediately.
WARNING: Battery posts, terminalsand related accessories contain lead andlead compounds, chemicals known to theState of California to cause cancer andreproductive harm. Wash your hands afterhandling.

Note:For flexible fuel vehicles, if you areoperating on E85, you may experience poorstarts or an inability to start the engine anddriveability problems until the fuel trim andethanol content have been relearned.
Make sure that you dispose of old batteriesin an environmentally friendly way. Seekadvice from your local authority aboutrecycling old batteries.
If storing your vehicle for more than 30 dayswithout recharging the battery, werecommend that you disconnect the negativebattery cable to maintain battery charge forquick starting.
Battery Management System (If Equipped)
The battery management system monitorsbattery conditions and takes actions toextend battery life. If excessive battery drainis detected, the system temporarily disablessome electrical systems to protect thebattery.
Systems included are:
•Heated rear window.
•Heated seats.
•Climate control.
•Heated steering wheel.
•Audio unit.
•Navigation system.
A message may appear in the informationdisplays to alert you that battery protectionactions are active. These messages are onlyfor notification that an action is taking place,and not intended to indicate an electricalproblem or that the battery requiresreplacement.
After battery replacement, or in some casesafter charging the battery with an externalcharger, the battery management systemrequires eight hours of vehicle sleep time torelearn the battery state of charge. Duringthis time your vehicle must remain fullylocked with the ignition switched off.
Note:Prior to relearning the battery state ofcharge, the battery management systemmay temporarily disable some electricalsystems.
Electrical Accessory Installation
To make sure the battery managementsystem works correctly, do not connect anelectrical device ground connection directlyto the battery negative post. This can causeinaccurate measurements of the batterycondition and potential incorrect systemoperation.
Note:If you add electrical accessories orcomponents to the vehicle, it may adverselyaffect battery performance and durability.This may also affect the performance ofother electrical systems in the vehicle.

Run the tip of your fingers over the edge ofthe blade to check for roughness.
Clean the wiper blades with washer fluid orwater applied with a soft sponge or cloth.
CHANGING THE WIPER BLADES
Note:Do not hold the wiper blade whenlifting the wiper arm.
1. Pull the wiper blade and arm away fromthe glass.
2. Lift the wiper blade primary locking clip.
3.Press the wiper blade secondary lockingclip.
4. Remove the wiper blade.
Note:Make sure that the wiper arm doesnot spring back against the glass when thewiper blade is not attached.
5. Install in the reverse order.
Note:Make sure that the wiper blade locksinto place.
ADJUSTING THE HEADLAMPS
Vertical Aim Adjustment
The headlamps on your vehicle are properlyaimed at the assembly plant. If your vehiclehas been in an accident, contact anauthorized dealer to check and realign yourheadlamps.

•Do not allow wax to come in contact withany non-body (low-gloss black) coloredtrim. The wax will discolor or stain theparts over time.
•Roof racks.
•Bumpers.
•Grained door handles.
•Side moldings.
•Mirror housings.
•Windshield cowl area.
•Do not apply wax to glass areas.
•After waxing, your car's paint should feelsmooth, and be free of streaks andsmudges.
CLEANING THE ENGINE
Engines are more efficient when they areclean because grease and dirt buildup keepthe engine warmer than normal.
When washing:
•Take care when using a power washerto clean the engine. The high-pressurefluid could penetrate the sealed partsand cause damage.
•Do not spray a hot engine with cold waterto avoid cracking the engine block orother engine components.
•Spray Motorcraft Engine Shampoo andDegreaser on all parts that requirecleaning and pressure rinse clean. InCanada, use Motorcraft Engine Shampoo.
•Never wash or rinse the engine while itis hot or running; water in the runningengine may cause internal damage.
•Never wash or rinse any ignition coil,spark plug wire or spark plug well, or thearea in and around these locations.
•Cover the battery, power distribution box,and air filter assembly to prevent waterdamage when cleaning the engine.
CLEANING THE WINDOWS AND
WIPER BLADES
Car wash chemicals and environmentalfallout can result in windshield and wiperblade contamination. Dirty windshield andwipers will result in poor windshield wiperoperation. Keep the windshield and wiperblades clean to maintain windshield wiperperformance.
To clean the windshield and wiper blades:
•Clean the windshield with a non-abrasiveglass cleaner. When cleaning the interiorof the windshield, avoid getting any glasscleaner on the instrument panel or doorpanels. Wipe any glass cleaner off thesesurfaces immediately.
•For windshields contaminated with treesap, chemicals, wax or bugs, clean theentire windshield using steel wool (nogreater than 0000 grade) in a circularmotion and rinse with water.
•Clean the wiper blades with isopropylrubbing alcohol or windshield washerconcentrate.
