When installing a child restraint withseatbelts:
•Place the vehicle seat in the uprightposition before you install the childrestraint.
•Use the correct seatbelt buckle for thatseating position.
•Insert the belt tongue into the buckle.Make sure the tongue is securelyfastened in the buckle.
•Keep the buckle release button pointingup and away from the child restraint, withthe tongue between the child restraintand the release button, to preventaccidental unbuckling.
•Put the seatbelt in the automatic lockingmode.

INSTALLING CHILD RESTRAINTS
USING SEATBELTS
WARNING: Depending on where yousecure a child restraint, and depending onthe child restraint design, you may blockaccess to certain seatbelt buckleassemblies and LATCH lower anchors,rendering those features potentiallyunusable. To avoid risk of injury, make sureoccupants only use seating positionswhere they are able to be properlyrestrained.
Note:Although the child restraint illustratedis a forward facing child restraint, the stepsare the same for installing a rear facing childrestraint.
Perform the following steps when installinga child restraint with seatbelts.
1.Position the child restraint in a seat witha seatbelt.
2.Pull down on the shoulder belt and thengrasp the shoulder belt and lap belttogether.
3.While holding the shoulder and lap beltportions together, route the tonguethrough the child restraint according tothe child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions. Make sure you did not twistthe belt webbing.
4.Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle for that seating position until thelatch engages. Make sure the tongue islatched securely by pulling on it.

5.To put the retractor in the automaticlocking mode, grasp the shoulder portionof the belt and pull downward until youpull all of the seatbelt out.
Note:The automatic locking mode isavailable on the front passenger and rearseats. This vehicle does not require the useof a locking clip.
6.Allow the belt to retract to remove slack.The seatbelt clicks as it retracts toindicate it is in the automatic lockingmode.
7.Pull the seatbelt out of the retractor tomake sure the retractor is in theautomatic locking mode. You should notbe able to pull more belt out. If theretractor is not locked, unbuckle the beltand repeat Steps 5 and 6.
8.Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling up on the shoulder belt in orderto force slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remaining slackthat exists once you add the extra weight
of the child to the child restraint. It alsohelps to achieve the proper snugness ofthe child restraint to your vehicle.Sometimes, a slight lean toward thebuckle helps to remove remaining slackfrom the belt.
9.If the child restraint has a tether strap,attach it.
10.Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward and backto make sure the seat is securely heldin place.

To check this, grab the seat at the belt pathand attempt to move it side to side andforward and back. There should be no morethan 1 in (2.5 cm) of movement.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety Technicianto make certain the child restraint is properlyinstalled. In Canada, check with TransportCanada for referral to a Child Car Seat Clinic.
USING LOWER ANCHORS ANDTETHERS FOR CHILDREN
WARNING: Do not attach two childsafety restraints to the same anchor. In acrash, one anchor may not be strongenough to hold two child safety restraintattachments and may break, causingserious injury or death.

To avoid risk of injury, make sureoccupants only use seating positionswhere they are able to be properlyrestrained.
The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children(LATCH) system has three vehicle anchorpoints:
•Two lower anchors where the vehicleseat backrest and seat cushion meet,called the seat bight.
•One top tether anchor behind thatseating position.
LATCH compatible child restraints have tworigid or webbing mounted attachments.These attachments connect to the two loweranchors at the LATCH equipped seatingpositions in your vehicle. This type ofattachment method eliminates the need touse seatbelts to attach the child restraint.
However, you can still use the seatbelt toattach the child restraint if the lower anchorsare not used. For forward-facing childrestraints, you must also attach the top tetherstrap to the proper top tether anchor if a toptether strap has been provided with yourchild restraint.
Follow the instructions later in this chapteron attaching child restraints with tetherstraps.

If the booster seat slides on the vehicle seatupon which it is being used, placing arubberized mesh sold as shelf or carpet linerunder the booster seat may improve thiscondition. Do not use any item thicker thanthis under the booster seat. Check with thebooster seat manufacturer's instructions.
CHILD SAFETY LOCKS
WARNING: You cannot open the reardoors from inside if you have put the childsafety locks on.
A child safety lock is on the rear edge ofeach rear door and must be set separatelyfor each door.
Left-Hand Side
Turn it clockwise to switch the child lock onand counterclockwise to switch it off.
Right-Hand Side
Turn it counterclockwise to switch the childlock on and clockwise to switch it off.

The retractor for the third row center seatbeltis in the roof.
To fasten the seatbelt:
1.Pull the belt out steadily. It may lock ifyou pull it sharply or if the vehicle is ona slope.
2.Insert the smaller tongue into the smallerbuckle to the left of the center seat.
3.Pull the larger tongue across the lap andinsert it into the buckle to the right of thecenter seat.
Note:If in constant use, you can leave thebelt buckled in the smaller buckle. When itis not in use, or when you fold or move therear seats, you should release the belt fromthe smaller buckle. Using the tongue of theadjacent seatbelt, press the red button onthe smaller buckle.
SENSITIVE LOCKING MODE
WHAT IS SENSITIVE LOCKING MODE
Sensitive locking mode is a seatbelt retractorfeature that allows shoulder belt lengthadjustment according to your movementsand locking in response to vehiclemovement.
HOW DOES SENSITIVE LOCKINGMODE WORK
If the driver suddenly brakes, turns a cornersharply, or the vehicle receives an impact ofabout 5 mph (8 km/h) or more, the seatbeltslock to help reduce forward movement ofthe driver and passengers.
In addition, the seatbelt retractor locks if youpull the seatbelt webbing out too quickly. Ifthe retractor locks, slowly lower the heightadjuster to allow the seatbelt to retract.
If the retractor does not unlock, pull theseatbelt out slowly then feed a small lengthof webbing back toward the stowed position.
For rear seatbelts, recline the rear seatbackrest or push the seat backrest cushionaway from the seatbelt. Feed a small lengthof webbing back toward the stowed position.
AUTOMATIC LOCKING MODE
WHAT IS AUTOMATIC LOCKINGMODE
This feature keeps the seatbelts pre-locked.The belt still retracts to remove any slack inthe shoulder belt.
WHEN TO USE AUTOMATIC LOCKINGMODE
Use this mode any time you install a childrestraint in the front passenger seatingposition or any rear seating position. Properlyrestrain children 12 years old and under in arear seat whenever possible.
Note:Automatic locking mode is notavailable on the driver seatbelt.
