Monitoring and Maintenance
qConstant Monitoring
The following components of the air bag systems are monitored by a diagnostic system:
lCrash sensors, and diagnostic module (SAS unit)lFront air bag sensorlAir bag moduleslSide crash sensorslAir bag/Front seat belt pretensioner system warning lightlFront seat belt pretensionerslRelated wiringlFront passenger air bag deactivation indicator lightlDriver seat slide position sensorlFront passenger seat weight sensorslFront passenger seat weight sensor control modulelFront passenger seat belt buckle switch
The diagnostic module continuously monitors the system's readiness. This begins when the
ignition is switched ON and continues while the vehicle is being driven.
q Maintenance
The air bag systems do not require regular maintenance. But if any of the following occurs,
take your vehicle to an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible:
lThe air bag system warning light flashes.lThe air bag system warning light remains illuminated.lThe air bag system warning light does not illuminate when the ignition is switched ON.lThe air bag system warning beep sound is heard.lThe air bags have deployed.lFront passenger air bag deactivation indicator light does not illuminate when the ignition
is switched ON or does not illuminate as indicated in the chart. For more details about
this indicator light and this chart, refer to “Front passenger seat weight sensors ”(page
2-50).

CAUTION
ØBefore opening the liftgate,
remove any snow and ice
accumulation on it. Otherwise, the
liftgate could close under the
weight of the snow and ice
resulting in injury.
Ø Be careful when opening/closing
the liftgate during strong winds. If
a strong gust blows against the
liftgate, it could close suddenly
resulting in injury.
Ø Fully open the liftgate and make
sure that it stays open. If the
liftgate is only opened partially, it
could slam shut by vibration or
wind gusts resulting in injury.
Ø When loading or unloading
luggage in the luggage
compartment, turn off the engine.
Otherwise, you could get burned
by the heat of the exhaust gas.
Ø Be careful not to apply excessive
force to the damper stay on the
liftgate such as by putting your
hand on the stay. Otherwise, the
damper stay may bend and affect
the liftgate operation.

qLocking, Unlocking with Key
The liftgate can be locked/unlocked by
inserting the key into the driver's door key
cylinder, refer to Power Door Locks (page
3-8).
qLocking, Unlocking with Transmitter
(with Retractable Type Key)
The liftgate can be locked/unlocked by
operating the keyless entry system
transmitter, refer to Keyless Entry System
(page 3-3).

Lock Switch
The liftgate can be locked/unlocked by
operating the door-lock switch, refer to
Power Door Locks (page 3-8).

Grasp the lower end of the liftgate, press
the electric liftgate opener on the liftgate,
and then raise the liftgate when the latch
releases.

2. Pull the center section of the plasticfastener and remove the fasteners, then
remove cover on the interior surface of
the liftgate.

After performing this emergency measure,
have the vehicle inspected at an
Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as
possible.
Closing the liftgate
To close, lower the liftgate slowly using
the liftgate grip recess, and then push the
liftgate closed using both hands. Do not slam it. Pull up on the liftgate to
make sure it is secure.

Luggage Compartment
WARNING
Do not place anything on top of the
cover:
Placing luggage or other cargo on
top of the luggage compartment
cover is dangerous. During sudden
braking or a collision, the cargo
could become a projectile that could
hit and injure someone. The vehicle
has a light weight luggage
compartment cover to keep the
contents of your luggage area out of
sight; it will not retain heavy objects
that are not tied down in an accident
such as a rollover. Tie down all heavy
objects, whether luggage or cargo,
using the tie down hooks.
Make sure luggage and cargo are
secured before driving: Not securing cargo while driving is
dangerous as it could move or be
crushed during sudden braking or a
collision and cause injury.

CAUTION
ØMake sure the luggage
compartment cover is firmly
secured. If it is not firmly secured,
it could unexpectedly disengage
resulting in injury.
Ø Do not place heavy objects or
apply excessive force to the top of
the luggage compartment cover
(Maximum weight:2 kg (4 lb)).
Overloading could cause
deformation or damage to the
luggage compartment cover. Also,
the liftgate could drop
unexpectedly if it is opened with
heavy objects on the luggage
compartment cover, resulting in
injury.

accessed by opening the liftgate when the
straps are attached to the sides of the
liftgate.

outward, and remove it from the pins.

3. Grasp the support rod in the paddedarea and secure it in the support rod
hole indicated by the arrow to hold the
hood open.qClosing the Hood
1. Check under the hood area to make
certain all filler caps are in place and
all loose items (e.g. tools, oil
containers, etc.) have been removed.
2. Lift the hood, grasp the padded area on the support rod, and secure the support
rod in the clip. Verify that the support
rod is secured in the clip before closing
the hood.
3. Lower the hood slowly to a height ofabout 20 cm (7.9 in) above its closed
position and then let it drop.
CAUTION
When closing the hood, do not push
it excessively such as by applying
your weight. Otherwise, the hood
could be deformed.

Break-In Period
No special break-in is necessary, but a few
precautions in the first 1,000 km (600
miles) may add to the performance,
economy, and life of your Mazda.
lDo not race the engine.lDo not maintain one constant speed,
either slow or fast, for a long period of
time.
lDo not drive constantly at full-throttle
or high engine rpm for extended
periods of time.
lAvoid unnecessary hard stops.lAvoid full-throttle starts.
Money-Saving Suggestions
How you operate your Mazda determines
how far it will travel on a tank of fuel. Use
these suggestions to help save money on
fuel and repairs.
lAvoid long warm-ups. Once the engine
runs smoothly, begin driving.
lAvoid fast starts.lKeep the engine tuned. Follow the
maintenance schedule (page 8-4) and
have an Authorized Mazda Dealer
perform inspections and servicing.
lUse the air conditioner only when
necessary.
lSlow down on rough roads.lKeep the tires properly inflated.lDo not carry unnecessary weight.lDo not rest your foot on the brake
pedal while driving.
lKeep the wheels in correct alignment.lKeep windows closed at high speeds.lSlow down when driving in crosswinds

WARNING
Never stop the engine when going
down a hill:Stopping the engine when going
down a hill is dangerous. This causes
the loss of power steering and power
brake control, and may cause
damage to the drivetrain. Any loss of
steering or braking control could
cause an accident.

Driving In Flooded Area
WARNING
Dry wet brakes by driving very slowly
and applying the brakes lightly until
brake performance returns to normal:Driving with wet brakes is
dangerous. Increased stopping
distance or the vehicle pulling to one
side when braking could result in a
serious accident. Light braking will
indicate whether the brakes have
been affected.
CAUTION
Do not drive the vehicle on flooded
roads as it could cause short
circuiting of electrical/electronic
parts, or engine damage or stalling
from water absorption. If the vehicle
has been immersed in water, consult
an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
Overloading
WARNING
Be careful not to overload your vehicle:The gross axle weight rating (GAWR)
and the gross vehicle weight rating
(GVWR) of your vehicle are on the
Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Label
on the driver's door frame. Exceeding
these ratings can cause an accident
or vehicle damage. You can estimate
the weight of your load by weighing
the items (or people) before putting
them in the vehicle.

Passing
For extra power when passing another
vehicle or climbing steep grades, depress
the accelerator fully. The transaxle will
shift to a lower gear, depending on vehicle
speed.
Climbing steep grades from a stop
To climb a steep grade from a stopped
position:
1. Depress the brake pedal.
2. Shift to D or 1, depending on the loadweight and grade steepness.
3. Release the brake pedal while gradually accelerating.
Descending steep grades
When descending a steep grade, shift to 2
or 1, depending on load weight and grade
steepness. Descend slowly, using the
brakes only occasionally to prevent them
from overheating.
Power Steering
Power steering is only operable when the
engine is running. If the engine is off or if
the power steering system is inoperable,
you can still steer, but it requires more
physical effort.
If the steering feels stiffer than usual
during normal driving, consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
qPower Steering Malfunction
Indicator Light
This indicator light illuminates or flashes
when the ignition is switched ON, and
turns off when the engine is started.
If the light remains illuminated or flashing
after the engine is started, or illuminates
while driving, turn off the engine after
parking in a safe place, and then start the
engine again.
If the light does not illuminate after
restarting the engine, this indicates that
the power steering is restored and normal
steering is possible.
If the light remains illuminated, the power
steering is still inoperable. Consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.

Tires
For reasons of proper performance, safety,
and better fuel economy, always maintain
recommended tire inflation pressures and
stay within the recommended load limits
and weight distribution.
WARNING
Using Different Tire Types:Driving your vehicle with different
types of tires is dangerous. It could
cause poor handling and poor
braking; leading to loss of control.
Except for the limited use of the
temporary spare tire, use only the
same type tires (radial, bias-belted,
bias-type) on all four wheels.
Using Wrong-Sized Tires: Using any other tire size than what is
specified for your Mazda (page 10-6)
is dangerous. It could seriously affect
ride, handling, ground clearance, tire
clearance, and speedometer
calibration. This could cause you to
have an accident. Use only tires that
are the correct size specified for your
Mazda.
qTire Inflation Pressure
WARNING
Always inflate the tires to the correct
pressure:
Overinflation or underinflation of
tires is dangerous. Adverse handling
or unexpected tire failure could result
in a serious accident.
Refer to Tires on page 10-6.
Use only a Mazda-genuine tire valve
cap: Use of a non-genuine part is
dangerous as the correct tire air
pressure cannot be maintained if the
tire valve becomes damaged. If the
vehicle is driven under this condition,
the tire air pressure will decrease
which could result in a serious
accident. Do not use any part for the
tire valve cap that is not a Mazda-
genuine part.

“215 ”is the nominal width of the tire in millimeters. This three-digit number gives the
width in millimeters of the tire from sidewall edge to sidewall edge. In general, the larger
the number, the wider the tire.

“ 65 ”is the aspect ratio. This two-digit number indicates the tire's ratio of height to width.

“R” is the tire construction symbol. R indicates “Radial ply construction ”.
