Xenon fusion headlight bulbs *
The low-beam bulbs of the headlights have xenon fusion bulbs that produce a bright white
beam over a wide area.
WARNING
Do not replace the xenon fusion bulbs yourself:
Replacing the xenon fusion bulbs yourself is dangerous, because the xenon fusion
bulbs require high voltage. You could receive an electric shock if the bulbs are handled
incorrectly. Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer when replacement is necessary.
NOTE
If the headlights fl icker or the brightness weakens, the bulb-life may be depleted and a
replacement is necessary. Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

Headlight High-Low Beam
Press the lever forward to turn on the high
beams.
Pull the lever back to its original position
for the low beams.
High beam
Low beam
The headlight high-beam indicator light
in the instrument cluster illuminates while
the high beams are turned on.
Flashing the Headlights
T o fl ash the headlights, pull the lever fully
towards you (the headlight switch does not
need to be on).

The headlight high-beam indicator light
in the instrument cluster illuminates
simultaneously. The lever will return to the
normal position when released.
Headlight Leveling *
The number of passengers and weight of
cargo in the luggage compartment change
the angle of the headlights.
Auto type
The angle of the headlights will be
automatically adjusted when turning on
the headlights.
The warning/indicator light turns on when
the system has a malfunction.

Adaptive Front Lighting System
(AFS)*
The adaptive front lighting system (AFS)
automatically adjusts the headlight beams
to the left or right in conjunction with the
operation of the steering wheel after the
headlights have been turned on.
AFS OFF Indicator Light
When illuminated
This indicator light illuminates briefl y
when the ignition is switched ON, and
then turns off. Pressing the AFS OFF
switch cancels the AFS function and
illuminates the indicator light.
When fl ashing
The indicator light fl ashes continuously if
the system is malfunctioning. Consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
NOTE
 


y Even if the AFS is not operating due to
some malfunction, the normal headlight
function is still operable.
 


y If there is a malfunction with the
headlight auto-leveling function, the
indicator light fl ashes.

High Beam Control System (HBC) *
The High Beam Control System (HBC) determines the conditions in front of the vehicle
using the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) while driving in darkness to automatically switch
the headlights between high and low beams.
Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-21 .
While driving the vehicle at a speed of about 30 km/h (18 mph), the headlights are switched
to high beams when there are no vehicles in front of your vehicle or approaching in the
opposite direction.
The system switches the headlights to low beams when one of the following occurs:
 


y The system detects a vehicle or the headlights/lights of a vehicle approaching in the
opposite direction.
 


y The vehicle is driven on roads lined with streetlamps or on roads in well-lit cities and
towns.
 


y The vehicle is driven at less than about 20 km/h (12 mph).
Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) The recognition distance of the
Forward Sensing Camera (FSC)
varies according to the
surrounding conditions.
The warning light fl ashes when the system has a malfunction.
Refer to Warning Lights on page 4-22 .
CAUTION
Do not adjust the vehicle height, modify the headlight units, or remove the camera,
otherwise the system will not operate normally.

NOTE
The timing in which the system switches the headlights changes under the following
conditions. If the system does not switch the headlights appropriately, manually switch
between high and low beams according to the visibility as well as road and traffi c
conditions.
 


y When there are sources of light in the area such as street lamps, illuminated signboards,
and traffi c signals.




y When there are refl ective objects in the surrounding area such as refl ective plates and
signs.
 


y When visibility is reduced under rain, snow and foggy conditions.



y When driving on roads with sharp curves or hilly terrain.



y When the headlights/rear lamps of vehicles in front of you or in the opposite lane are dim
or not illuminated.
 


y When there is suffi cient darkness such as at dawn or dusk.



y When the luggage compartment is loaded with heavy objects or the rear passenger seats
are occupied.
 


y When visibility is reduced due to a vehicle in front of you spraying water from its tires
onto your windshield.

To Operate the System
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
operates to switch the headlights
automatically between high and low
beams after the ignition is switched ON
and the headlight switch is in the AUTO
and high beam position. At the same time,
the High Beam Control System (HBC)
indicator light (green) in the instrument
cluster illuminates.
The High Beam Control System (HBC)
determines that it is dark based on the
brightness of the surrounding area.
NOTE
 


y When the vehicle speed is 30 km/h
(18 mph) or higher, the headlights
automatically switch to high beams
when there are no vehicles in front of
your vehicle or approaching in the
opposite direction.
  When the vehicle speed is less than
about 20 km/h (12 mph), the High
Beam Control System (HBC) switches
the headlights to low beams.
 


y The low beams may not switch to high
beams when cornering.
 


y Operation of the High Beam Control
System (HBC) function can be disabled.

Forward Sensing Camera
Forward Sensing Camera *
Your vehicle is equipped with a Forward Sensing Camera (FSC). The Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) is positioned near the rearview mirror and used by the following systems.
 


y High Beam Control System (HBC)



y Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)

The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) determines the conditions ahead of the vehicle while
traveling at night and detects traffi c lanes. The distance in which the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) can detect objects varies depending on the surrounding conditions.

Forward Sensing Camera
CAUTION
Heed the following cautions to assure the correct operation of the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC).
 


¾ Do not remove the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cover.



¾ Do not place objects on the dashboard which refl ect light.



¾ Do not apply accessories, stickers or fi lm to the windshield near the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC). If there are objects in front of the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens,
even a transparent sticker, they will cause the system to not operate correctly.
 


¾ Always keep the windshield glass around the camera clean by removing dirt or
fogging. Use the windshield defroster to remove fogging on the windshield.
 


¾ When cleaning the windshield, do not allow glass cleaners or similar cleaning agent
to get on the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens. In addition, do not touch the
Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens.
 


¾ Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer regarding cleaning the interior side of the
windshield around the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC).
 


¾ Be careful not to scratch the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) lens or allow it to get
dirty. Also, do no take the camera apart. Otherwise, it could result in damage or
malfunction.
 


¾ Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer before performing repairs around the Forward
Sensing Camera (FSC).
 


¾ The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) is installed to the windshield. Consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer for windshield repair and replacement.
 


¾ When performing repairs around the rearview mirror, consult an Authorized Mazda
Dealer.
 


¾ Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer regarding cleaning of the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) lens.
 


¾ Do not hit or apply strong force to the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) or the area
around it. If strong force is applied, stop using the Lane Departure Warning System
(LDWS) and the High Beam Control System (HBC), and consult an Authorized Mazda
Dealer.
 


¾ The direction in which the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) is pointed has been fi nely
adjusted. Do not change the installation position of the Forward Sensing Camera
(FSC) or remove it. Otherwise, it could result in damage or malfunction.
