Essential Safety Equipment
Seat Belt Systems
Do not operate a vehicle with a damaged seat belt: Using a damaged seat belt is dangerous. An accident could damage the belt webbing
of the seat belt in use. A damaged seat belt cannot provide adequate protection in a
collision. Have an Authorized Mazda Dealer inspect all seat belt systems in use during an
accident before they are used again.
Have your seat belts changed immediately if the pretensioner or load limiter has been
expended: Always have an Authorized Mazda Dealer immediately inspect the seat belt pretensioners
and air bags after any collision. Like the air bags, the seat belt pretensioners and load
limiters will only function once and must be replaced after any collision that caused them
to deploy. A seat belt with an expended pretensioner or load limiter is still better than
wearing no seat belt at all; however, if the seat belt pretensioners and load limiters are
not replaced, the risk of injury in a collision will increase.
Positioning the Shoulder Portion of the Seat Belt: Improper positioning of the shoulder portion of the seat belt is dangerous. Always make
sure the shoulder portion of the seat belt is positioned across your shoulder and near your
neck, but never under your arm, on your neck, or on your upper arm.
Positioning the Lap Portion of the Seat Belt: The lap portion of the seat belt worn too high is dangerous. In a collision, this would
concentrate the impact force directly on the abdominal area, causing serious injury. Wear
the lap portion of the belt snugly and as low as possible.
CAUTION
Belt retraction may become diffi cult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them
clean. For more details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to "Cleaning the Lap/Shoulder
Belt Webbing" (page 6-66 ).

Driving Tips
Rocking the Vehicle
WARNING
Do not spin the wheels at more than
56 km/h (35 mph), and do not allow
anyone to stand behind a wheel when
pushing the vehicle:
When the vehicle is stuck, spinning the
wheels at high speed is dangerous.
The spinning tire could overheat and
explode. This could cause serious
injuries.
CAUTION
Too much rocking may cause engine
overheating, transaxle failure, and tire
damage.
If you must rock the vehicle to free it from
snow, sand or mud, depress the accelerator
slightly and slowly move the shift lever
from D to R.
Winter Driving
Carry emergency gear, including tire
chains, window scraper, fl ares, a small
shovel, jumper cables, and a small bag of
sand or salt.
Ask an Authorized Mazda Dealer to check
the following:
y Have the proper ratio of antifreeze in the
radiator.
Refer to Engine Coolant on page 6-29 .
y Inspect the battery and its cables. Cold
reduces battery capacity.
y Use an engine oil appropriate for the
lowest ambient temperatures that the
vehicle will be driven in (page 6-27 ).
y Inspect the ignition system for damage
and loose connections.
y Use washer fl uid made with antifreeze—
but do not use engine coolant antifreeze
for washer fl uid (page 6-31 ).

AW D
All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
Operation
AWD provides excellent drivability on
snow-covered and ice-packed roads, sand
and mud, as well as on steep slopes and
other slippery surfaces.
A system malfunction or operation
conditions are indicated by a warning.
Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page
4-25 .
WARNING
Never spin a wheel that is off the
ground:
Spinning a wheel that is off the ground
as a result of the vehicle being stuck
or in a ditch is dangerous. The drive
assembly could be seriously damaged
which could lead to an accident or
could even lead to overheating, oil
leakage, and a fi re.
AWD Driving
This vehicle has not been designed for the
purpose of off-road driving or rallies. Do
not attempt to drive over uneven or rocky
surfaces, or across rivers.
Although this vehicle is equipped with
AWD, acceleration, steering and braking
operations should be conducted in the
same manner as with a non-AWD vehicle,
with the emphasis placed on safe driving.
Tires and Tire Chains
The condition of the tires plays a large
role in the performance of the vehicle.
Moreover, to prevent adverse effects to the
drive assembly, please note the following:
Tires
y When replacing tires, always replace all
front and rear tires at the same time.
y All tires must be of the same size,
manufacture, brand and tread pattern.
Pay particular attention when equipping
snow or other types of winter tires.
y Do not mix tread-worn tires with normal
tires.
y Inspect tire infl ation pressures at the
specifi ed periods adjust to the specifi ed
pressures, and initialize the tire pressure
monitoring system.
Refer to Tire Pressure Monitoring
System Initialization on page 4-129 .
NOTE
Check the tire infl ation pressure label
attached to driver's door frame for the
correct tire infl ation pressure.
y Make sure to equip the vehicle with
genuine wheels of the specifi ed size, on
all wheels. With AWD, the system is
calibrated for all four wheels being of
the same dimensions.
Tire chains
y Install tire chains to the front tires.
y Do not use tire chains on the rear
wheels.
y Do not drive the vehicle faster than
30 km/h (19 mph) with the tire chains
installed.
y Do not drive the vehicle with tire chains
on road conditions other than snow or
ice.
Towing
If the vehicle requires towing, have it
towed with all four wheels completely off
the ground 7-24 .

CAUTION
¾ When driving off -road in areas where there is grass or forage, it is recommended that the
Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system be turned off .
¾ Always use tires for all wheels that are of the specifi ed size, and the same manufacturer,
brand, and tread pattern. In addition, do not use tires with signifi cantly diff erent wear
patterns on the same vehicle as the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may not
operate normally.
¾ The laser sensor (front) includes a function for detecting a soiled windshield and informing
the driver, however, depending on the conditions, it may not detect plastic shopping bags,
ice or snow on the windshield. In such cases, the system cannot accurately determine a
vehicle ahead and may not be able to operate normally. Always drive carefully and pay
attention to the road ahead.
NOTE
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will not operate if the driver is deliberately
performing driving operations (accelerator pedal and steering wheel).
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system will operate under the following conditions.
y The engine is running.
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) warning light (amber) does not illuminate.
y The vehicle speed is between about 4 to 30 km/h (2 to 18 mph).
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system is not turned off.
y The DSC is not malfunctioning.
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) detects a vehicle ahead by emitting a near-infrared
laser beam and receiving the beam refl ected off the refl ector of the vehicle ahead, and
then using it for the measurement. Consequently, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
may not operate under the following conditions:
y Refl ection of the laser is poor due to the shape of the vehicle ahead.
y The vehicle ahead is signifi cantly dirty.
y Under bad weather condition, such as rain, fog and snow.
y The window washer is being used or the windshield wipers are not used when it's
raining.
y The windshield is dirty.
y The steering wheel is turned completely left or right, or the vehicle is accelerated
rapidly and comes close to the vehicle ahead.
y Trucks with low loading platforms and vehicles with an extremely low or high profi le.
y Vehicles with certain shapes such as a vehicle carrier.

.CAUTION
Heed the following precautions to assure correct operation of each system.
¾ Do not adhere stickers (including transparent stickers) to the surface of the radiator
grille and front emblem in and around the radar sensor (front), and do not replace
the radiator grille and front emblem with any product that is not a genuine product
designed for use with the radar sensor (front).
¾ The radar sensor (front) includes a function for detecting soiling of the radar sensor's
front surface and informing the driver, however, depending on the conditions, it may
require time to detect or it may not detect plastic shopping bags, ice or snow. If this
occurs, the system may not operate correctly, therefore always keep the radar sensor
(front) clean.
¾ Do not install a grille guard.
¾ If the front part of the vehicle has been damaged in a vehicle accident, the position of
the radar sensor (front) may have moved. Stop the system immediately and always
have the vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
¾ Do not use the front bumper to push other vehicles or obstructions such as when
pulling out of a parking space. Otherwise, the radar sensor (front) could be hit and its
position deviated.
¾ Do not remove, disassemble, or modify the radar sensor (front).
¾ For repairs, replacement or paint work around the radar sensor (front), consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.
¾ Do not modify the suspension. If the suspension are modifi ed, the vehicle's posture
could change and the radar sensor (front) may not be able to correctly detect a
vehicle ahead or an obstruction.

y Under the following conditions, the
radar sensor (front) may not be able to
detect vehicles ahead or obstructions
correctly and each system may not
operate normally.
y The rear surface of a vehicle
ahead does not refl ect radio waves
effectively, such as an unloaded
trailer or an automobile with a
loading platform covered by a soft
top, vehicles with a hard plastic
tailgate, and round-shaped vehicles.
y Vehicles ahead with low vehicle
height and thus less area for
refl ecting radio waves.
y Visibility is reduced due to a vehicle
ahead casting off water, snow, or
sand from its tires and onto your
windshield.
y The luggage compartment is loaded
with heavy objects or the rear
passenger seats are occupied.
y Ice, snow, or soiling is on the front
surface of the front emblem.
y During inclement weather such as
rain, snow, or sand storms.
y When driving near facilities or
objects emitting strong radio waves.
y Under the following conditions, the
radar sensor (front) may not be able to
detect vehicles ahead or obstructions.
y The beginning and end of a curve.
y Roads with continuous curves.
y Narrow lane roads due to road
construction or lane closures.
y The vehicle ahead enters the radar
sensor's blind spot.
y The vehicle ahead is running
abnormally due to accident or
vehicle damage.
y Roads with repeated up and down
slopes
y Driving on poor roads or unpaved
roads.
y The distance between your vehicle
and the vehicle ahead is extremely
short.
y A vehicle suddenly comes close such
as by cutting into the lane.
y To prevent incorrect operation of the
system, use tires of the same specifi ed
size, manufacturer, brand, and tread
pattern on all four wheels. In addition,
do not use tires with signifi cantly
different wear patterns or tire pressures
on the same vehicle (Including the
temporary spare tire).
y If the battery power is weak, the system
may not operate correctly.
y When driving on roads with little
traffi c and few vehicles ahead or
obstructions for the radar sensor to
detect, Smart Brake Support/Smart City
Brake Support (SBS/SCBS) Warning
Light (amber) temporarily illuminates,
however, this does not indicate a
problem.

y CDs bearing the logo shown in the
illustration can be played. No other discs
can be played.
y Use discs that have been legitimately
produced. If illegally-copied discs such
as pirated discs are used, the system may
not operate properly.
y Be sure never to touch the signal surface
when handling the CDs. Pick up a CD
by grasping the outer edge or the edge of
the hole and the outer edge.
y Do not stick paper or tape on the CD.
Avoid scratching the reverse side (the
side without a label). The disc may not
eject resulting in a malfunction.
y Dust, fi nger smudges, and dirt can
decrease the amount of light refl ected
from the signal surface, thus affecting
sound quality. If the CD should become
soiled, gently wipe it with a soft cloth
from the center of the CD to the edge.
y Do not use record sprays, antistatic
agents, or household spray cleaners.
Volatile chemicals such as benzine and
thinner can also damage the surface of
the CD and must not be used. Anything
that can damage, warp, or fog plastic
should never be used to clean CDs.
y The CD player ejects the CD if the CD
is inserted upside down. Also dirty and/
or defective CDs may be ejected.
y Do not insert cleaning discs in the CD
player.
y Do not insert any disc with a peel-off
seal affi xed to it.
y This unit may not be able to play certain
CD-R/CD-RWs made using a computer
or music CD recorder due to disc
characteristics, scratches, smudges, dirt,
etc., or due to dust or condensation on
the lens inside the unit.
y Storing CDs in the vehicle exposed to
direct sunlight or high temperature may
damage the CD-R/CD-RWs, and make
them unplayable.
y CD-R/CD-RW exceeding 700 MB
cannot be played.
y This unit may not be able to play certain
discs made using a computer due to the
application (writing software) setting
used. (For details, consult the store
where the application was purchased.)
y It is possible that certain text data, such
as titles, recorded on a CD-R/CD-RW
may not be displayed when musical data
(CD-DA) is playing.
y The period from when a CD-RW is
inserted to when it begins playing is
longer than a normal CD or CD-R.
y Completely read the instruction manual
and cautions for CD-R/CD-RWs.
y Do not use discs with cellophane tape
adhering, partially peeled off labels,
or adhesive material exuding from the
edges of the CD label. Also, do not use
discs with a commercially-available
CD-R label affi xed. The disc may not
eject resulting in a malfunction.
