Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) Warning Lights/Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM)
Warning Beep
The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) or Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) system noti ¿ es the
driver of the presence of vehicles in adjacent lanes to the rear of your vehicle using the
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights and the warning beep while the systems are
operational.
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights
The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights are equipped on the left and right door
mirrors. The warning lights turn on when a vehicle approaching from the rear in an adjacent
lane is detected.
When the ignition is switched ON, the malfunction warning light turns on momentarily and
then turns off after a few seconds.
Forward driving (Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) operation)
The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) detects vehicles approaching from the rear and turns on
the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights equipped on the door mirrors according
to the conditions. Additionally, while a Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning light is
illuminated, if the turn signal lever is operated to signal a turn in the direction in which
the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning light is illuminated, the Blind Spot Monitoring
(BSM) warning light À ashes.
Reverse driving (Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) operation)
The Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) detects vehicles approaching from the left and right of
your vehicle and À ashes the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights.

Function for cancelling illumination dimmer
When the headlight switch is in the
or position, the brightness of the Blind Spot
Monitoring (BSM) warning lights is dimmed.
If the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights are dif ¿ cult to see due to glare from
surrounding brightness when traveling on snow-covered roads or under foggy conditions,
press the dimmer cancellation button to cancel the dimmer and increase the brightness of
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights when they turn on.

The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning beep is activated simultaneously with the
À ashing of a Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning light.

When the Blind Spot Monitoring
(BSM) switch is pressed, the Blind Spot
Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traf ¿ c
Alert (RCTA) systems are turned off and
the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) OFF
indicator light in the instrument cluster
turns on.
If the switch is pressed again, the Blind
Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross
Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) systems become
operable and the Blind Spot Monitoring
(BSM) OFF indicator light turns off.

Indication on Display
The Distance Recognition Support System (DRSS) operation status is displayed in the
active driving display.
Problems are indicated in the center display (Type B audio). If there is a problem, take
appropriate action according to the displayed message.
Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-24 .
NOTE
y When the ignition is switched off, the operation status before the system was turned off
is maintained. For example, if the ignition is switched off with the Distance Recognition
Support System (DRSS) operable, the system will be operable when the ignition is
switched ON the next time.
y The Distance Recognition Support System (DRSS) can be turned on/off and the system's
sensitivity can be changed.

Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) *
T h e R e a r C r o s s T r a f ¿ c Alert (RCTA) system is designed to assist the driver in checking the
area to the rear of the vehicle on both sides while the vehicle is reversing by alerting the
driver to the presence of vehicles approaching the rear of the vehicle.
The Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) system detects vehicles approaching from the left and
right sides of the vehicle while the vehicle is being reversed out of a parking space, and
noti ¿ es the driver of possible danger using the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights
and the warning buzzer.

1. The Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) system operates when the selector lever is shifted
to the reverse (R) position.
2. If there is the possibility of a collision with an approaching vehicle, the Blind
Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning light À ashes and the warning beep is activated
simultaneously.

WARNING
Always check the surrounding area visually before actually putting the vehicle in
reverse:
The system is only designed to assist you in checking for vehicles at the rear when putting
the vehicle in reverse. Due to certain limitations with the operation of this system, the
Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning light may not fl ash or it might be delayed even
though a vehicle is behind your vehicle. Always make it your responsibility as a driver to
check the rear.
N O T E
y In the following cases, the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) OFF indicator light turns on and
operation of the system is stopped. If the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) OFF indicator
light remains illuminated, have the vehicle inspected at an Authorized Mazda Dealer as
soon as possible.
y Some problem with the system including the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning
lights has occurred.
y A large deviation in the installation position of a radar sensor (rear) on the vehicle has
occurred.
y There is a large accumulation of snow or ice on the rear bumper near a radar sensor
(rear).
y Driving on snow-covered roads for long periods.
y The temperature near the radar sensors becomes extremely hot due to driving for long
periods on slopes during the summer.
y The battery voltage has decreased.

y Under the following conditions, the radar sensors (rear) cannot detect target objects or it
may be dif ¿ cult to detect them.
y The vehicle speed when reversing is about 10 km/h (6.3 mph) or faster.
y The radar sensor (rear) detection area is obstructed by a nearby wall or parked
vehicle. (Reverse the vehicle to a position where the radar sensor detection area is no
longer obstructed.)

y A vehicle is approaching directly from the rear of your vehicle.

y The vehicle is parked on a slant.

y Directly after pressing the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) switch and the system
becomes operable.
y In the following cases, it may be dif ¿ cult to view the illumination/ À ashing of the Blind
Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning lights equipped on the door mirrors.
y Snow or ice adheres to the door mirrors.
y The front door glass is fogged or covered in snow, frost or dirt.
y Turn off the Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) system while pulling a trailer or while an
accessory such as a bicycle carrier is installed to the rear of the vehicle. Otherwise,
the radio waves emitted by the radar will be blocked causing the system to not operate
normally.

y The Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system operates when all of the following
conditions are met.
y The vehicle speed is about 30 km/h (19 mph) to 145 km/h (90 mph).
y The Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system is turned on.
y The parking brake is not applied.
y The Smart Brake Support (SBS) is not malfunctioning.
y The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is operating normally.
y The selector lever is in the drive (D) position or manual (M) position (manual mode).
y In the following cases, the warnings may not activate even if your vehicle starts closing in
on the vehicle ahead.
y You are driving at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.
y Directly after the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system has been set.
y When the accelerator pedal is depressed or directly after the accelerator pedal is
released.
y Another vehicle cuts into the driving lane.
y The following are not detected as physical objects.
y Vehicles approaching in the opposite direction
y Pedestrians
y Stationary objects (stopped vehicles, obstructions)
y If a vehicle ahead is traveling at an extremely low speed, the system may not detect it
correctly.
y During headway control travel, do not set the system on two-wheeled vehicles such as
motorcycles and bicycles.
y Do not use the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system under conditions in which
the close proximity warnings are frequently activated.
y During headway control travel, the system accelerates and decelerates your vehicle in
conjunction with the speed of the vehicle ahead. However, if it is necessary to accelerate
for a lane change or if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly causing you to close in on the
vehicle rapidly, accelerate using the accelerator pedal or decelerate using the brake
pedal depending on the conditions.
y While the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) system is in use, it does not cancel
even if the selector lever is operated and any intended engine braking will not occur. If
deceleration is required, lower the vehicle speed setting or depress the brake pedal.
y The brake lights are illuminated while the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)
automatic braking is operating.
y The Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) warning light (amber) turns on when the
system has a malfunction. Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-24 .
y The headway control operation can be canceled and the system can be switched to only
cruise control. Refer to Cruise Control Function on page 4-100 .

y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) detects a vehicle ahead by emitting a near-infrared
laser beam and receiving the beam re À ected off the re À ector of the vehicle ahead, and
then using it for the measurement. Consequently, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
may not operate under the following conditions:
y Re À ection of the laser is poor due to the shape of the vehicle ahead.
y The vehicle ahead is signi ¿ cantly dirty.
y Under bad weather condition, such as rain, fog and snow.
y The window washer is being used or the windshield wipers are not used when it's
raining.
y The windshield is dirty.
y The steering wheel is turned completely left or right, or the vehicle is accelerated
rapidly and comes close to the vehicle ahead.
y Trucks with low loading platforms and vehicles with an extremely low or high pro ¿ le.
y Vehicles with certain shapes such as a vehicle carrier.
y Under the following conditions, the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may not
operate normally.
y Heavy luggage is loaded in the luggage compartment or on the rear seat.
y If there is the possibility of partial contact with a vehicle ahead.
y When driving on continuously curving roads, and entering and exiting exits.
y Elongated luggage or cargo is loaded onto installed roof rails and covers the laser
sensor (front).
y Exhaust gas from the vehicle in front, sand, snow, and water vapor rising from
manholes and grating, and water splashed into the air.
y When towing a malfunctioning vehicle.
y When driving with tires having signi ¿ cantly different wear.
y In the following cases, the laser sensor (front) may inadvertently determine that there is a
vehicle ahead and the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system may operate.
y Objects on the road at the entrance to a curve.
y Vehicles passing in the opposite lane while making a curve.
y Metal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road.
y When passing through a toll gate equipped with a bar.
y When passing under a vinyl curtain or À ag.
y Plastic objects such as pylons.
y Two-wheeled vehicles, pedestrians, animals or standing trees.
y When the system operates, the user is noti ¿ ed by the À ashing Smart City Brake Support
(SCBS) indicator light (red) and the active driving display * .
y The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) warning light (amber) turns on when the system
has a malfunction.

y The Smart Brake Support (SBS) system operates when all of the following conditions are

y The ignition is switched ON.
y The Smart Brake Support (SBS) system is on.
y The vehicle speed is about 15 km/h or faster (10 mph or faster).
y The relative speed between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead is about 15 km/h or
faster (10 mph or faster).
y The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is not operating.
y The Smart Brake Support (SBS) system may not operate under the following conditions:
y If the vehicle is accelerated rapidly and it comes close to a vehicle ahead.
y The vehicle is driven at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.
y The accelerator pedal is depressed.
y The brake pedal is depressed.
y The steering wheel is being operated.
y The selector lever is being operated.
y The turn signal is being used.
y When the vehicle ahead is not equipped with taillights or the taillights are turned off.
y When warnings and messages, such as a dirty windshield, related to the Forward
Sensing Camera (FSC)/laser sensor (front) are being displayed in the center display.
y Although the objects which activate the system are four-wheeled vehicles, the radar
sensor (front) could detect the following objects, determine them to be an obstruction, and
operate the Smart Brake Support (SBS) system.
y Objects on the road at the entrance to a curve (including guardrails and snow banks).
y A vehicle appears in the opposite lane while cornering or rounding a curve.
y When crossing a narrow bridge.
y When passing under a low gate or through a tunnel or narrow gate.
y When entering an underground parking area.
y Metal objects, bumps, or protruding objects on the road.
y If you suddenly come close to a vehicle ahead.
y When driving in areas where there is high grass or forage.
y Two-wheeled vehicles such as motorbikes or bicycles.
y Pedestrians or non-metallic objects such as standing trees.
y When the system operates, the user is noti ¿ ed by the À ashing Smart Brake Support (SBS)
indicator light (red) and the active driving display.
y The Smart Brake Support (SBS) warning light (amber) turns on when the system has a
malfunction. Refer to Warning/Indicator Lights on page 4-24 .

y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) cannot detect target objects
correctly, and each system may be unable to operate normally.
y The height of the vehicle ahead is low.
y You drive your vehicle at the same speed as the vehicle ahead.
y Headlights are not turned on during the night or when going through a tunnel.
y In the following cases, the Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) may not be able to detect
target objects correctly.
y When driving next to walls with no patterning (including fences and longitudinally
striped walls).
y The taillights of the vehicle ahead are turned off.
y A vehicle is outside the illumination range of the headlights.
y The vehicle is making a sharp turn, or ascending or descending a steep slope.
y Entering or exiting a tunnel.
y Heavy luggage is loaded causing the vehicle to tilt.
y Strong light is shone at the front of the vehicle (back light or high-beam light from on-
coming vehicles).
y There are many light emitters on the vehicle ahead.
y When the vehicle ahead is not equipped with taillights or the taillights are turned off at
nighttime.
y The vehicle ahead has a special shape. For example, a vehicle towing a trailer house
or a boat, or a vehicle carrier carrying a vehicle with its front pointed rearward.
