Rearview mirror adjustment
Before driving, adjust the rearview mirror
to center on the scene through the rear
window.

Towing
Trailer Towing Tips
y Verify that your Mazda maintains a near-normal attitude when a loaded or unloaded trailer
is connected. Do not drive if it has an abnormal front-up or front-down position. Inspect
for incorrect tongue load, worn suspension parts, and trailer overloading.
y Make sure the trailer is properly loaded and the cargo is secure to prevent it from shifting.
y Make sure the mirrors conform to all government regulations. If they do not, install
required rear view mirrors appropriate for towing purposes.
The three main causes of vehicle-trailer accidents are driver error, excessive speed, and
improper trailer loading.
Before driving
y Have your cooling and braking system checked by an Authorized Mazda Dealer.
y Before starting out, inspect the operation of all vehicle and trailer lights and all vehicle-
to-trailer connections. Stop and re-inspect all lights and connections after driving a short
distance.
Driving
y Your Mazda will handle differently with a trailer in tow, so practice turning, backing, and
stopping in a traf ¿ c-free area.
y Take time to get accustomed to the extra weight and length.
y Allow more room between your vehicle and the one in front because braking distance
increases with a trailer. For each 16 km/h (10 mph) of speed, allow at least one vehicle
and trailer length between your Mazda and the vehicle ahead.
y Avoid jerky starts or sudden acceleration.
y Avoid sudden braking. It may cause loss of control and result in jackkni ¿ ng, especially so
on wet or slippery roads.
y Shift the shift lever to the D position when towing a trailer in hilly terrain or when heavily
loaded.
The D position will allow operating the vehicle without frequent shifting.
Lane changes and turning
Avoid quick lane changes, sudden turns, and tight turns. Slow down before turning to avoid
the need of sudden braking.
A turning trailer will make a tighter arc than the tow vehicle. Compensate with turns that are
larger than normal.

Camera and Sensors
F o r w a r d s e n s i n g c a m e r a ( F S C )
The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) determines the conditions ahead of the vehicle while
traveling at night and detects traf ¿ c lanes. The following systems also use the Forward
Sensing Camera (FSC).
y High Beam Control system (HBC)
y Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) & Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)
y Smart Brake Support (SBS)
The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) is installed at the top of the windshield near the
rearview mirror.

Radar sensor (front)
The radar sensor (front) functions by detecting the radio waves re À ected off a vehicle ahead
sent from the radar sensor. The following systems also use the radar sensor (front).
y Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC)
y Distance Recognition Support System (DRSS)
y Smart Brake Support (SBS)
The radar sensor (front) is mounted behind the radiator grille.

Laser sensor (front)
The laser sensor (front) emits a near-infrared laser beam and receives the beam re À ected
off the re À ective surface of a vehicle in front, and the detected beam is then used for
measurement. The following systems also use the laser sensor (front).
y Smart City Brake Support (SCBS)
y Smart Brake Support (SBS)
The laser sensor (front) is installed at the top of the windshield near the rearview mirror.

y In the following case, the À ashing of the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning indicator
light, and the activation of the warning sound and the warning screen indicator display
may not occur or they may be delayed.
y A vehicle makes a lane change from a driving lane two lanes over to an adjacent lane.
y Driving on steep slopes.
y Crossing the summit of a hill or mountain pass.
y The turning radius is small (making a sharp turn, turning at intersections).
y When there is a difference in the height between your driving lane and the adjacent
lane.
y Directly after pressing the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) OFF switch and the system
becomes operable.
y If the road width is extremely narrow, vehicles two lanes over may be detected.
The detection area of the radar sensors (rear) is set according to the road width of
expressways.
y The Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning indicator light may turn on and the vehicle
detection screen may be displayed in the display in reaction to stationary objects
(guardrails, tunnels, sidewalls, and parked vehicles) on the road or the roadside.
Objects such as guardrails and concrete walls
running alongside the vehicle.Places where the width between guardrails or
walls on each side of the vehicle narrows.
The walls at the entrance and exits of tunnels,

y A Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning indicator light may À ash or the warning beep
may be activated several times when making a turn at a city intersection.
y Turn off the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) while pulling a trailer or while an accessory
such as a bicycle carrier is installed to the rear of the vehicle. Otherwise, the radar’s
radio waves will be blocked causing the system to not operate normally.
y In the following cases, it may be dif ¿ cult to view the illumination/ À ashing of the Blind
Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning indicator lights equipped on the door mirrors.
y Snow or ice is adhering to the door mirrors.
y The front door glass is fogged or covered in snow, frost or dirt.

Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) operation
1. The Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) system operates when the selector lever is shifted
to the reverse (R) position.
2. If there is the possibility of a collision with an approaching vehicle, the Blind Spot
Monitoring (BSM) warning indicator lights À ashes and the warning beep is activated
simultaneously.
(With rear view monitor)
The Rear Cross Traf ¿ c Alert (RCTA) warning indication in the rearview monitor also
synchronizes with the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) warning indicator light on the door
mirrors.

y Under the following conditions, the radar sensors (rear) cannot detect target objects or it
may be dif ¿ cult to detect them.
y The vehicle speed when reversing is about 15 km/h (9 mph) or faster.
y The radar sensor (rear) detection area is obstructed by a nearby wall or parked
vehicle. (Reverse the vehicle to a position where the radar sensor detection area is no
longer obstructed.)

y A vehicle is approaching directly from the rear of your vehicle.

y The vehicle is parked on a slant.

the radio waves emitted by the radar will be blocked causing the system to not operate
normally.

Do not rely completely on the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system:
¾ The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system is only designed to reduce damage in the
event of a collision. Over reliance on the system leading to the accelerator pedal or
brake pedal being mistakenly operated could result in an accident.
¾ The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) is a system which operates in response to a
vehicle ahead. The system may not be able to detect or react to two-wheeled vehicles
or pedestrians.
¾ The laser sensor (front) for the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system is installed near
the rearview mirror. To assure the correct operation of the Smart City Brake Support
(SCBS), heed the following cautions.
¾
Do not apply stickers to the surface of the windshield near the laser sensor (front)
(including transparent stickers). Otherwise, the laser sensor (front) may not be able
to detect vehicles ahead which could result in an accident.
¾
Do not apply coating agent to the windshield. Otherwise, the laser sensor (front)
may not be able to detect vehicles or obstructions in front which could result in an
accident.
¾
Do not disassemble the laser sensor (front).
¾
If cracks or damage caused by fl ying gravel or debris is visible near the laser sensor
(front), stop using the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system immediately and
have your vehicle inspected by an Authorized Mazda Dealer. If the vehicle continues
to be driven with cracks or scratch marks left on the windshield near the laser sensor
(front), the system may operate unnecessarily and cause an unexpected accident.

4-133 .
¾
When replacing the windshield wipers or windshield, consult an Authorized Mazda
Dealer.
Do not modify the suspension:
If the vehicle height or inclination is changed, the system will not be able to correctly
detect vehicles ahead. This will result in the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system not
operating normally or mistakenly operating, which could cause a serious accident.
Turn off the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) when the vehicle is running on a chassis
roller or being towed:
Turn off the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system to prevent mistaken operation when
the vehicle is running on a chassis roller or being towed.

4-133 on how to turn off the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system.

Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) *
Your vehicle is equipped with a Forward Sensing Camera (FSC). The Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) is positioned near the rearview mirror and used by the following systems.
y High Beam Control System (HBC)
y Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) & Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS)
y Smart Brake Support (SBS)
The Forward Sensing Camera (FSC) determines the conditions ahead of the vehicle while
traveling at night and detects traf ¿ c lanes. The distance in which the Forward Sensing
Camera (FSC) can detect objects varies depending on the surrounding conditions.
