EBD monitors and controls the brake pres-
sure on the rea rwheels to improve driving
stability while braking.

WARNING
If there is an ESP ®
malfunction, you will not
receive any steering assistance from the
STEER CONTROL. The steering continues to
functio nwith power assistance.
STEER CONTROL helps you by transmitting a
noticeable steering force to the steering
wheel in the direction required for vehicle
stabilisation.
This steering assistance is provided in partic-
ular if:
R both right wheels or both left wheels are on
a wet or slippery road surface when you
brake.
R the vehicle starts to skid.
You have control over the steering at all
times. Anti-theft systems
Immobiliser
X To activate: remove the key fro mthe igni-
tion lock.
X To deactivate: switch on the ignition. The immobiliser prevents your vehicle from
being started without the correct key.

The immobiliser is always deactivated
when you start the engine. ATA (Anti-Theft Alarm system)
X
To prime: lock the vehicle with the key.
Indicator lamp :flashes. The alarm sys-
tem is primed after approximately
15 seconds.
X To deactivate: unlock the vehicle with the
key.
X To stop the alarm: insert the key into the
ignition lock.
The alarm is switched off.
or
X Press the %or& button on the key.
The alarm is switched off.
Av isual and audible alarm is triggered if the
alarm system is primed and you open:
R a door
R the vehicle with the emergency key ele-
ment
R the tailgate
R the bonnet
The alarm is not switched off, even if you
close the open door that has triggered it, for

Tow-away protection
An audible and visual alar mis triggered if your
vehicle's angle of inclination is altered while
tow-away protection is primed. This occurs if
the vehicle is jacked up on one side, for exam-
ple.
To activate:
X Lock the vehicle with the key.
Tow-away protection is primed after
approximately 30 seconds.
To deactivate:
X Unlock the vehicle with the key.
Tow-away protection is switched off auto-
matically. Deactivating:
X
Remove the key from the ignition lock.
X Press button :.
Indicator lamp ;lights up briefly.
X Lock the vehicle with the key.
Tow-away protection is deactivated.
Tow-away protection remains deactivated
until:
R the vehicle is unlocked again.
R a door is opened and closed again.
R the vehicle is locked again. To prevent a false alarm, deactivate tow-away
protection manually if your vehicle:
R
is being transported
R is being loaded onto a ferry or car trans-
porter, for example
R is parked on a movable surface, e.g. in a
split-level garage Interior motion sensor
When the interior motion sensor is primed, a
visual and audible alarm is triggered if move-
ment is detected in the vehicle interior. This
occurs if someone reaches into the vehicle
interior, for example.
To activate:
X Make sure that:
R
the side windows are closed.
R the panorama sliding sunroof is closed.
This will prevent false alarms.
X Lock the vehicle with the key.
The interior motion sensor is primed after
approximately 30 seconds.
To deactivate:
X Unlock the vehicle with the key.
The interior motion sensor is switched off

Deactivating:
X
Remove the key from the ignition lock.
X Press button :.

The interior motion sensor is deactivated.
The interior motion sensor remains deactiva-
ted until:
R the vehicle is unlocked again.
R a door is opened and closed again.
R the vehicle is locked again.
To prevent a false alarm, deactivate the inte-
rior motion sensor if you lock your vehicle
and:
R people or animals remain in the vehicle.
R the side windows remain open.
R the panorama sliding sunroof remains
open.
i UK only: your vehicle is equipped with a
double lock function. The doors cannot be
opened from the inside if the vehicle has
been locked with the key (Y page 76).
Deactivate the interior motion sensor
before you lock the vehicle with the key.
The doors can then be opened from the
inside after the vehicle has been locked
from the outside with the key. Observe the
"Important safety notes" (Y page 76).70

Important safety notes

WARNING
If children are lef tunsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
R open a door from inside the vehicle at any
time, eve nifithas been locked
R start the vehicle using akey which has been
left in the vehicle
R release the parking brake
They could thereby endanger themselves and
others. Never leave children unsupervised in
the vehicle. Always take the key with you
when leaving the vehicle, even if you are only
leaving it for a short time. G
WARNING
Do not attach any heavy or large key rings to
the key that is inserted in the ignition .Ifakey
ring is too heavy or too large, the weight acting
on the key could cause it to tur ninthe ignition
lock or catch on the steering wheel. This could
cause the engine to be switched off suddenly.
You could lose control of the vehicle and
cause an accident.
Do not use the key in the vicinity of strong
magnetic fields. Otherwise, the remote con-
trol function could be affected. Do not keep the key together with:
R
electronic devices, e.g. a mobile phone or
another key
R metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal foil Key functions

& To lock the vehicle
; % To unlock the vehicle
X To unlock centrally: press the%but-
ton.
If you do not open the vehicle within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking:
R the vehicle is locked again.
R the anti-theft system is primed again.
X To lock centrally: press the&button.
The key centrally locks/unlocks:
R the doors
R the tailgate
R the fuel filler flap
When unlocking, the turn signals flash once.
When locking, they flash three times.
When it is dark, the surround lighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer (Y page 202).
You can also set an audible signal to confirm
that the vehicle has been locked. The audible
signal can be activated and deactivated using
the on-board computer (Y page 203).72

Changing the settings of the locking
system
X To change the setting: press and hold
down the %and& buttons simulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
the battery check lamp flashes twice
(Y page 74).
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the vehi-
cle, pressing the &or% buttonlocks
or unlocks the vehicle.
The key now functions as follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: press the
% button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the%but-
ton twice.
X To lock centrally: press the&button.
You can change the setting of the locking
system in such a way that only the driver's
door and the fuel filler flap are unlocked. This
is useful if you frequently travel on your own. Restoring factory settings
X Press the %and& buttons simulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
the battery check lamp flashes twice. Emergency key element
General notes If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the key, use the emergency key element.
If you use the emergenc ykey element to
unlock and open the driver's door, the anti-
thef talarm system will be triggered
(Y page 68).
There are several ways to tur noff the alarm:
X Press the %or& button on the key.
or
X Insert the key into the ignition lock. If you unlock the vehicle using the emergency
key element, the fuel filler flap will not be
unlocked automatically.
X
To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
key into the ignition lock.
Removing the emergency key element X
Push release catch :in the direction of
the arrow and at the same time, remove
emergency key element ;from the key. Battery of the key

Batteries are toxic and contain caustic sub-
stances. For this reason, keep batteries out of
the reach of children.
If a battery has been swallowed, visi tadoctor

Problems with the key

You cannot lock or
unlock the vehicle
using the key. The key battery is discharged or nearly discharged.

Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the key. Point the tip of the key at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the %/& button.
If this does not work:
X Check the key battery and replace it if necessary (Y page 74).
X Lock (Y page 77) or unlock (Y page 78) the vehicle using
the emergency key element. The key is faulty.
X
Lock (Y page 77) or unlock (Y page 78) the vehicle using
the emergency key element.
X Have the key checked at a qualified specialist workshop. You have lost a key. X
Have the key deactivated at a qualified specialist workshop.
X Report the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.
X If necessary, have the locks changed as well. You have lost the emer-
gency key element. X

started using the key. The on-board voltage is too low.

Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior
lighting, and try to start the engine again.

X Jump-start the vehicle (Y page 283).

X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The engine cannot be
started using the key. The steering lock is mechanically blocked.

Remove the key and reinsert it into the ignition lock. While doing
this, turn the steering wheel in both directions. Key

Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
X
To unlock: press button :.
X To lock: press button ;.
If all the doors and th etailgate are closed,
the vehicle locks.
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. This can be useful if you wish
to loc kthe vehicle before pulling away, for
example.
The fuel filler flap is not locked or unlocked
when you press the central locking button or
the central unlocking button.
i You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally
from the inside if the vehicle has been
locked with the key.
i You can lock the vehicle centrally if the
front-passenger door is closed. Automatic locking feature
X
To deactivate: press and hold button :
for about five seconds until a tone sounds.
X To activate: press and hold button ;for
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning. You could therefore lock yourself out.
You could therefore be locked out when:
R the vehicle is being pushed.
R the vehicle is being towed.
R the vehicle is being tested on a dynamom-
eter.
i If you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board com-
puter (Y page 203). Unlocking the driver's door (emer-
gency key element)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the key, use the emergency key element.
If you use the emergency key element to
unlock and open the driver's door, the anti-
theft alarm system will be triggered
(Y page 68).
X Take the emergency key element out of the
key (Y page 73).
X Insert the emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go. Doors

the switch or pull the switch upwards to close
the side window again.

WARNING
Make sure tha tnobody can become trapped
as you close a side window. If there is a risk
of becoming trapped, release the switch or
press it again to open the side window again. G
WARNING
Children may injure themselves if they open
or close the side windows.
Never leave children unsupervised in the vehi-
cle. Always take the key with you when leaving
the vehicle, even if you are only leaving it for
a short time. G
WARNING
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, even if they are secured in a child
restraint system. The children could:
R be seriously or even fatally injured on parts
of the vehicle
R be seriously or even fatally injured by pro-
longed exposure to extremely high or
extremely low temperatures
If children open a door, they could:
R seriously or even fatally injure other people
R get out of the vehicle and injure them-
selves, or be seriously or even fatally
injured by a passing vehicle
Activate the child-proof locks/override fea-
ture if children are travelling in the vehicle.
They could otherwise open doors or side win-
dows while the vehicle is in motion and
thereby injure themselves or others. Opening and closing the side win-
dows
:
Front left
; Front right
= Rear right
? Rear left
The switches for all side windows are located
on the driver's door. There is also a switch on
each door for the corresponding side window.
The switches on the driver's door take prec-
edence.
i The side windows cannot be operated
from the rear when the override feature for
the side windows is activated (Y page 62).
X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock.
X To open: press the corresponding switch.
X To close: pull the corresponding switch.
i If you press the switch beyond the point
of resistance, an automatic opening/clos-
ing process is started in the corresponding
direction .You can stop automatic opera-
tion by pressing again.
i You can continue to operate the side win-
dows after switching off the engine or
removing the key. This function remains
active for five minutes or until the driver's
or front-passenger door is opened. 80

Convenience opening feature
You can ventilate the vehicle before you start
driving .To do this, the key is used to carry out
the following functions simultaneously:
R unlock the vehicle
R open the side windows
R open the panorama sliding sunroof and the
roller sunblinds
i The convenience opening feature can
only be operated using the key. The key
must be close to the driver's door handle.
X Point the tip of the key at the driver's door
handle.
X Press and hold the %button until the
side windows and the panorama sunroof
are in the desired position.
If the roller sunblinds of the panorama slid-
ing sunroof are closed, the roller sunblinds
are opened first.
X Press and hold the %button again until
the panorama sliding sunroof is in the
desired position.
X To interrupt convenience opening:
release the %button. Convenience closing feature

WARNING
When using the convenience closing feature,
make sure that nobody can become trapped.
Proceed as follows if there is a risk of entrap-
ment:
R release the &button.
R press and hold the %button until the
side windows and the panorama sliding
sunroof open again.
When you lock the vehicle, you can simulta-
neously:
R close the side windows
R close the panorama sliding sunroof
On vehicles with a panorama sliding sunroof,
you can then close the roller sunblinds. i
The key must be close to the driver's door
handle.
X Point the tip of the key at the driver's door
handle.
X Press and hold the &button until the
side windows and the panorama sliding
sunroof are fully closed.
X Make sure that all the side windows and the
panorama sliding sunroof are closed.
On vehicles with a panorama sliding sunroof:
X Press and hold the &button again until
the roller sunblinds of the panorama sliding
sunroof close.
X To interrupt convenience closing:
release the &button. Resetting the side windows
You must reset each side window if:
R the side window opens again slightly after
being closed fully.
R the side window can no longer be fully
opened or closed.
X Close all the doors.
X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock.
X Pull the corresponding switch on the door
control panel until the side window is com-
pletely closed. (Y page 80)
X Hold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
X Immediately pull the corresponding switch
on the door control panel until the side win-
dow is completely closed (Y page 80).
X Hold the switch for an additional second.
X If the corresponding side window remains
closed after the button has been released,
the side window has been reset correctly.
If this is not the case, repeat the steps

Operating the panorama sliding sun-
roof

X Turn the key to position 1or 2in the ignition
lock.
X Press or pull the 3switch in the corre-
sponding direction.
i If you press the 3switch beyond the
point of resistance, an automatic opening/
closing process is started in the corre-
sponding direction. You can stop automatic
operation by pressing again.
i You can continue to operate the pano-
rama sliding sunroof after switching off the
engine or removing the key. This function
remains active for five minutes or until you
open a front door.
Rain-closing feature The rain-closing feature is only available for
vehicles with a rain sensor.
When the key is in position 0in the ignition
lock or is removed, the panorama sliding sun-
roof closes automatically:
R if it starts to rain
R at extreme outside temperatures
R after six hours
R if there is a malfunction in the power supply The panorama sliding sunroof remains raised
at the rear in order to allow ventilation of the
vehicle interior.
i If the panorama sliding sunroof is obstruc-
ted when being closed by the rain-closing
feature, it opens again slightly. The rain-
closing feature is then deactivated.
The panorama sliding sunroof does not close
if:
R it is raised at the rear.
R it is blocked.
R no rain is falling on the area of the wind-
screen being monitored by the rain sensor,
e.g. because the vehicle is under a bridge. Operating the panorama sliding sun-
roof roller sunblinds
Important safety notes G
WARNING
Make sure that nobody can become trapped
as you open or close the roller sunblinds.
The roller sunblinds shield the vehicle interior
from sunlight. The two roller sunblinds can
only be opened and closed together when the
panorama sliding sunroof is closed.
