Interior lighting control
Important notes In order to preven
tthe vehicle's battery from
discharging, the interior lighting functions are
automatically deactivated after some time
except for when the key is in position 2in the
ignition lock.
Automatic interior lighting control X
To switch on: set the switch to centre
position B.
X To switch off: set the switch to the |
position.
The interior lighting automatically switches
on if you:
R unlock the vehicle
R open a door
R remove the key from the ignition lock
The interior lighting is activated for a short
time when the key is removed from the igni-
tion lock. You can activate this delayed
switch-off using the on-board computer
(Y page 202).
Manual interior lighting control X
To switch the front interior lighting on:
set the switch to the cposition.
X To switch the front interior lighting off:
set the switch to the |position.
X To switch the rear interior lighting on/
off: press the ubutton.
X To switch the reading lamps on/off:
press the pbutton. Crash-responsive emergency lighting
The interior lighting is activated automatically
if the vehicle is involved in an accident. X
To switch off the crash-responsive
emergency lighting: press the hazard
warning lamp button.

X Lock and then unlock the vehicle using the

Important safety notes
Xenon bulbs G
DANGER
Xenon bulbs are under high voltage. If you
touch the electrical contacts of a xenon bulb,
you could suffer an electric shock and be seri-
ously or even fatally injured. For this reason,
do not remove the cover of xenon bulbs.
Do not change the xenon bulbs yourself, but
have them replaced at a qualified workshop.
If your vehicle is equipped with xenon bulbs,
you can recognise this by the following: the
cone of light from the xenon bulbs moves
from the top to the bottom and back again
when you start the engine. For this to be
observed, the lights must be switched on
before starting the engine.
Bulbs and lamps are an important aspect of
vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure
that these function correctly at all times.
Have the headlamp setting checked regularly.
Other bulbs G
WARNING
Bulbs and lamps can be very hot. You should
therefore allow them to cool down before you
change them. Otherwise, you could be burned
if you touch them.
Keep bulbs out of the reach of children. Oth-
erwise, they could damage the bulbs, for
example, and injure themselves. Replacing bulbs

Never use a bulb which has been dropped.
Such a bulb may break or even explode and
injure you.
Halogenb ulbs are pressurised and can
explode when you change them, particularly
if they are very hot .You should therefore wear
eye protection and gloves when you are
changing them.
There are bulbs other than the xenon bulbs
that you cannot replace. Replace only the
bulbs listed (Y page 104). Have the bulbs that
you cannot replace yourself changed at a
qualified specialist workshop.
If you require assistance changing bulbs, con-
sult a qualified specialist workshop.
Do not touch the glass tube of new bulbs with
your bare hands. Even minor contamination
can burn into the glass surface and reduce
the service life of the bulbs. Always use a lint-
free cloth or only touch the base of the bulb
when fitting.
Only use bulbs of the correc ttype.
If the new bulb still does no tlight up, consult
a qualified specialist workshop.
Bulbs and lamps are an importan taspect of
vehicle safety. You must therefore make sure
that these function correctly at all times.

Fitting/removing the cover on the front
wheel arch You must remove the cover from the front
wheel housing before you can change the
front bulbs. X
To remove: switch off the lights.
X Turn the front wheels inwards.
X Slide cover :up and remove it.
X To fit: insert cover :again and slide it
down until it engages.
Dipped-beam headlamps (halogen
headlamps) X
Remove the cover in the front wheel arch
(Y page 105).
X Turn housing cover :anti-clockwise and
pull it out.
X Turn bulb holder ;anti-clockwise and pull
it out.
X Take the bulb out of bulb holder ;.
X Insert the new bulb into bulb holder ;.
X Insert bulb holder ;into the lamp and turn
it clockwise.
X Align housing cover :and turn it clock-
wise until it engages.
X Replace the cover in the front wheel arch

X Insert bulb holder ;into the lamp and turn
it clockwise.
X Align housing cover :and turn it clock-
wise until it engages.
Side lamps/parking lamps (halogen
headlamps) X
Switch off the lights.
X Open the bonnet.

pull it out.

Opening and closing the side trim pan-
els You must open the side trim panel in the lug-
gage compartment before you can change
the bulbs in the tail lamps. Left-hand side trim panel

To open: turn release knob :90° in the
direction of the arrow and remove side trim
panel ;.
X To close: insert side trim panel ;and turn
release knob :90° in the opposite direc-
tion to the arrow.
Tail lamps X
Switch off the lights.
X Open the luggage compartment.
X Open the side trim panel (Y page 107). X
Press retaining lugs :simultaneously in
the direction of the arrow and pull the bulb

Lightly press the corresponding bulb into
the holder, turn it anti-clockwise and
remove it from the bulb holder.
X Insert the corresponding new bulb into the
bulb holdera nd turnitclockwise.
X Attach the bulb holder and press firmly.
The retaining lugs on the bulb holder
engage audibly.
X Close the side trim panel (Y page 107).
Licence plate lighting X
Switch off the lights.
X Open the tailgate.
X Apply a screwdriver to lamp lens :from
the outside.
X Leve rout lamp lens :and remove it.
X Replace the bulb.
X Inser tlamp lens :into the licence plate
lamp and press it in until it engages. Windscreen wipers
Switching the windscreen wipers on/
off

WARNING
The windscree nwill not longer be wiped prop-
erly if the wiper blades are worn .This could
prevent you from observing the traffic condi-
tions, thereby causing an accident. Replace
the wiper blades twice a year, ideally in spring
and autumn. !
Do not operate the windscreen wipers
when the windscreen is dry, as this could
damage the wiper blades. Moreover, dust
that has collected on the windscreen can
scratch the glass if wiping takes place when
the windscreen is dry.
If it is necessary to switch on the wind-
screen wipers in dry weather conditions,
always operate them using washer fluid.
! If the windscreen wipers leave smears on
the windscreen after the vehicle has been
washed in an automatic car wash, this may
be due to wax or other residue. Cleant he
windscreen with washer fluid after an auto-
matic car wash. Combination switch

X Turn the combination switch to the corre-
sponding position.
! Vehicles with a rain sensor: if the wind-
screen becomes dirty in dry weather con-
ditions, the windscreen wipers may be acti-
vated inadvertently. This could damage the 108

windscreen wiper blades or scratch the
windscreen.
For this reason, you should always switch
off the windscreen wipers in dry weather.
Vehicles with arain sensor: in theÄor
Å position, the appropriate wiping fre-
quency is automatically set according to the
intensity of the rain. In the Åposition, the
rai ns ensor is more sensitive than in
the Ä position, causing the windscreen
wipers to wipe more frequently. Switching the rear window wiper on/

When the rear window wiper is switched on,

WARNING
The wiper arms could start moving and cause
an injury if you leave the windscreen wipers
switched on.
Remove the key from the ignition lock before
replacing the wiper blades.
! To avoid damaging the windscreen wiper
blades, make sure that you touch only the
wiper arm of the windscreen wiper.
! Never open the bonnet if a windscreen
wiper arm has been folded away from the
windscreen.
Never fold a windscreen wiper arm without
a wiper blade back onto the windscreen/
rear window.
Hold the windscreen wiper arm firmly when
you change the wiper blade. If you release
the windscreen wiper arm without a wiper
blade and it falls onto the windscreen, the
windscreen may be damaged by the force
of the impact.
Mercedes-Benzr ecommends that you have
the wiper blades changed at aqualified
specialist workshop.

The wiper arm could be set in motion and
injure you if the windscreen wipers are
switched on.
Remove the key from the ignition lock before
replacing the wiper blade. Removing the wiper blade X

X Fold wiper arm :away from the rear win-
dow until it engages.
X Position wiper blade ;at a right angle to
wiper arm :.
X Hold wiper arm :and press wiper
blade ;in the direction of the arrow until
it releases.

X Place new wiper blade ;onto wiper
arm :.
X Hold wiper arm :and press wiper
blade ;in the opposite direction to the
arrow until it engages.
X Make sure that wiper blade ;is seated
correctly.
X Position wiper blade ;parallel to wiper

X Fold wiper arm :back onto the rear win-
dow. Problems with the windscreen wipers
The windscreen wipers are obstructed Leaves or snow, for example, may be
obstructing the windscreen wiper movement.

key from the ignition lock.
X Remove the cause of the obstruction.
X Switch the windscreen wipers back on.
The windscreen wipers are inoperative The windscreen wiper drive is malfunctioning.
X Select another wiper speed on the combi-
nation switch.
X Have the windscreen wipers checked at a
qualified specialist workshop.
The spray nozzles are misaligned The windscreen washer fluid from the spray
nozzles no longer hits the centre of the wind-
screen. The spray nozzles are misaligned.

Have the spray nozzles adjusted at a quali-

Turn the key to position 2in the ignition

The indicator lamp in the ¬button lights

The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
R cooling with air dehumidification on
R high airflow 9

R air distribution to the windscreen and

R air-recirculation mode off
i The "Demisting" function automatically
sets the blower output to the optimum
demisting effect .As a result, the airflow
may increase or decrease automatically
after the button is pressed.
X To switch off: press the¬button.
The indicator lamp in the ¬button goes
out. The previously selected settings come
into effect again. The cooling with air dehu-
midification function remains on. Air-recir-
culation mode remains deactivated.
