Problem
Possible causes/consequences and

MSolutions The coolant temperature
display is showing more
than 120 †. Adisplay
message may also
appear in the multifunc-
tion display and awarn-
ing tone may sound. The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no
longer being cooled sufficiently.
X Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant to
cool down.
X Check the coolant level (Y page 324). Observe the warning notes
as you do so and top up the coolant if necessary. If the coolant level is correct,t
he engine radiator fan may be faulty. The
coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled sufficiently.
X If the coolant temperature is below 120 †, you can continue driving
to the nearest qualified specialist workshop.
X Avoid heavy loads on the engine as you do so, e.g. driving in moun-
tainous terrain and stop-start traffic. DYNAMIC SELECTs

Use the DYNAMIC SELECT switch to change the
drive program. Depending on the drive program
selected, the following vehicle characteristics
will change:
R the drive (engine and transmission manage-
ment)
R the suspension
R the steering
R the availability of the ECO start/stop function
R the climate control
- the climate control settings
- the rear window heating operation period
- the performance of the seat heating
If the ignition is switched off for less than four
hours, the previously selected drive program is
activated when the engine is next started. If the ignition is switched off for more than four hours,
drive program Cis activated when the engine is
next started. :
DYNAMIC SELECT switch (example)
X Push DYNAMIC SELECT switch :forward or
back until the desired drive program is selec- ted.
The status icon of the selected drive program
is shown in the multifunction display.
In addition, the current drive program settings are displayed briefly in the display of the mul-
timedia system.

af ew countries, the ECO start/stop func-
tion is deactivated at the factory due to the
quality of the available fuel. In this case, the
ECO start/stop function is not available in any
drive program, regardless of the display in the
multimedia system display.

that th ebumpers and th ecover in th eradiator
trim are free of dirt, ice or slush. The rear sen-
sor sm ustn otbe covered, e.g. by bicycle racks
or overhangin gloads .Following asevere impact
or in th eevent of damage to th ebumpers ,have
th ef unction of th erada rsensor schecked at a
qualified specialist workshop .Activ eBlind Spot
Assis tmay otherwise no longer function prop-
erly.

If no vehicle is detected in th eadjacent lane and
broke nlane markings are detected, no lane-cor-
rectin gbrak eapplication is made.
Warning vibration through th esteering
wheel
Aw arning may be given if afront wheel passes
ove ralane marking. It will warn you by mean sof
intermitten tvibration in th esteering wheel for
up to 1. 5seconds.
Lane-correcting brak eapplication
If you leave your lane under certain circumstan- ces ,the vehicle will brak ebriefly on on eside.
This is intended to help you return th evehicle to
th eo riginal lane. G
WARNING
Al ane-correcting brak eapplication cannot
always brin gthe vehicle back int othe original
lane .Ther eisar iskofana ccident.
Always steer ,brak eora ccelerate yourself,
especially if Activ eLaneK eepin gAssist warns
you or makes alane-correcting brak eappli-
cation. If
al ane-correcting brak eapplication occurs,
display :appear sinthemultifunction display.
The brak eapplication also slightly reduces driv-
ing speed.
This function is available in aspee drange
between 60 km/h and 20 0km/ h.
Al ane-correcting brak eapplication can be made
after driving ove ralane markin gdetected as

The coolant leve listoo low.
If the coolant leve liscorrect, the airflow to the engine radiator may be blocked or
the electric engine radiator fan may be malfunctioning.
The coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being coole dsufficiently.
X Observe the additiona ldisplay messages in the multifunction display.
X Stop the vehicl eimmediately, paying attention to road and traffic conditions,
and switch off the engine.
X Safeguard the vehicl eagainst rolling away( Ypage1 72).
X Leave the vehicl eand keep asafe distance from the vehicl euntil the engine has
coole ddown.
X Check the coolant leve land top up the coolant, observing the warning notes

X If you have to top up the coolant frequently, have the engine cooling system
checked.

slush.
X Do not start the engine again until the coolant temperature is below 120 †. The

An unlocked bonnet may open up when the
vehicle is in motion and bloc kyour view. There

Never unlock th ebonnet when driving .Before

R keep items of clothing and hair, for exam-
ple, away from moving parts. G

The ignition system and th efuel injection sys-
te mo perate with ahigh voltage. If you touch
th el ive components, you coul dreceive an

Never touch component softheignition sys-

ignition is switched on.
Activ ebonnet (pedestria nprotection) Operating principle
! An active bonnet that had been triggered
must be repaired at aqualified specialist
workshop .The active bonnet function will
then be availabl eagain .The additional pedes-
trian protection provide dbytheactive bonnet
will then be restored.
The active bonnet is only availabl eincertain
countries.
The active bonnet can reduc ethe risk of injury to
pedestrians in certain acciden tsituations .Rais-
ing th eactive bonnet increases th eclearance to
hard components, suc hastheengine.
If th eactive bonnet has been triggered, it is
raise datt herear in th earea aroun dthe hinge by
approximately 85 mm .The active bonnet is trig-
gered by pyrotechnics.
For th edrivetot heworkshop ,reset th etrig-
gered active bonnet yourself. If th eactive bon-
net has been triggered, pedestrian protection
may be limited.
Resetting G
WARNING

engine compartment.
As far as possible, allow th eengine to cool
down and only touch th ecomponent sdescri-

With your hand flat, push down active bon-
net :in the area around the hinges on both
sides (arrows) until you feel it engage.
If you can raise the active bonnet slightly in the
area around the hinges, it is not engaged cor-
rectly. Repeat the step.
Opening the bonnet G
WARNING
Certain componentsint he engine compart-
ment could be very hot, e.g. the engine, the
radiator and parts of the exhaust system.
There is arisk of injury when accessin gthe
engine compartment.
As far as possible, allow the engine to cool
down and only touch the componentsd escri-
bed in the following. G
WARNING
When the bonnet is open, and the windscreen wipers are set in motion ,you can be injured by
the wiper linkage. There is arisk of injury.
Always switch off the windscreen wipers and
the ignition before opening the bonnet.
! Make sure that the windscreen wipers are
not folded away from the windscreen .Other-
wise, you could damage the windscreen wip-
ers or the bonnet. X
Make sure that the windscreen wipers are
switched off.
X Pull release lever :on the bonnet.
The bonnet is released. X
Reach into the gap, pull bonnet catc hhan-
dle ;up and lift the bonnet.
If you lift the bonnet by approximately 40 cm, the bonnet is opened and held open automat-
ically by the gas-filled strut.
Closing the bonnet X
Lower the bonnet and let it fall from aheight
of approximately 20 cm.
X Check that the bonnet has engaged properly.
If the bonnet can be raised slightly, it is not
properly engaged. Open it again and close it
with alittle more force. Radiator
Do not cover up the radiator. Do not use thermal mats, insect protection covers or anything sim-
ilar. Doing so can cause the Onboard Diagnos-
tics System to display inaccurat evalues. Some
of these values are legally required and must
alway sbec orrect. 322

Mak esure that engine oil does no tspill out
ove rthe fille rneck. Allo wthe engine to cool
down and thoroughly clean th ecomponents
that have com eintoc ontac twith engine oil
before you start th eengine.
General notes Dependin
gonyour driving style, th evehicle
consume supto0.8litres of oil per 1,000 km.
The oil consumptio nmay be higher than this
when th evehicle is new or if you frequently drive
at high engine speeds.

imately fiv eminute siftheengine is at normal

R all vehicle s(excep tMercedes-AM GC63/C
63S): if th eengine is no tatnormaloperating
temperature, e.g .iftheengine was only star-
te db riefly, wait approximately 30 minutes
before carryin gout th emeasurement
The oil leve loftheMercedes-AM GC63/C6 3S
must be checked only when th eengine is at
normal operatin gtem perature. Checking th

Environmental note
When toppin guptheoil, tak ecaren otto spill
any. If oil enters th esoil or waterways, it is
harmful to th eenvironment.
! Only use engine oils and oil filters that have
been approved for vehicle swithaservic esys-
tem. You can obtain alist of th eengine oils
and oil filters tested and approved in accord- anc ewith th eMercedes-Ben zSpecifications
for Servic eProduct satany Mercedes-Benz
Servic eCentre.
Damage to th eengine or exhaust system is
caused by th efollowing:
R usin gengine oils and oil filters that have not
been specifically approved for th eservice
system
R changing th eengine oil and oil filter after
missing th echang einterval required by the
