Automatic locking feature
XTo deactivate:press and hold button
for about five seconds until a tone sounds.
XTo activate:press and hold button for
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
iIf you press one of thetwo buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignitionis switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore lock yourselfout if:
Rthe vehicle is being pushed.
Rthe vehicle is being towed.
Rthe vehicle is on a roller dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Ypage 208).
Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theftalarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 70).
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 73).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to position .
The door is unlocked.
XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
XOpen the driver's door.
XClose the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the trunk lid.
XPress the locking button (Ypage 78).
XCheck whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs manually, if necessary (Ypage 77).
XClose the driver's door.
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 73).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.

XTurn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to position .
XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
XMake sure that the doors and the trunk lid
are locked.
XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
iIf you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed.
Trunk
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the
trunk lid is open when the engine is running,
especially if the vehicle is in motion.There is
a risk of poisoning.
Always switch off the engine before opening
the trunk lid. Never drive with the trunk lid
open.
GWARNING
If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
!The trunk lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the trunk lid.
iThe opening dimensions of the trunk lid
can be found in the "Vehicle data" section
(Ypage 351).
You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Ypage 254).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the trunk. You
could otherwise lock yourself out.
The trunk lid can be:
Ropened and closed manually from outside
Runlocked from inside with the mechanical
key
Opening/closing manually from
outside

XPress the button on the SmartKey.
XPull handle .

XRemove the cover in the front wheel
housing (Ypage 112).
XTurn housing cover counter-clockwise
and pull it out.
XTurn bulb holder counter-clockwise and
pull it out.
XTake the bulb out of bulb holder .
XInsertthe new bulb into bulb holder .
XInsert bulb holder into the lamp and turn
it clockwise.
XAlign housing cover and turn it
clockwise until it engages.
XReplace the cover in the front wheel
housing (Ypage 112).
High-beam headlamps/daytime
running lamps/parking lamps/
standing lamps (vehicles with halogen
headlamps)
XSwitch off the lights.
XOpen the hood.
XTurn housing cover counter-clockwise
and pull it out.
XTurn bulb counter-clockwise and pull it
out.
XInsert the new bulb and engage it to the
stop.
XAlign housing cover and turn it
clockwise until it engages.
Turn signals (halogen headlamps)
XSwitch off the lights.
XOpen the hood.
XTurn bulb holder counter-clockwise and
pull it out.
XTake the bulb out of bulb holder .
XInsert the new bulb into bulb holder .
XInsert bulb holder and turn it clockwise
until it engages.
Cornering light function (Intelligent
Light System)
XSwitch off the lights.
XOpen the hood.
XTurn housing cover counter-clockwise
and pull it out.
XTurn bulb holder counter-clockwise and
pull it out.
XTake the bulb out of bulb holder .
XInsert the new bulb into bulb holder .

XInsert bulb holder into the lamp and turn
it clockwise.
XAlign housing cover and turn it
clockwise until it engages.
Changing the rear bulbs

panels
You must open the side trim panel in the trunk
before you can change the bulbs in the tail
lamps.
Left-hand side trim panel
XTo open:turn release knob 90° in the
direction of the arrow and remove side trim
panel .
XTo close:insert side trim panel and turn
release knob 90° in the opposite
direction to the arrow.
Right-hand side trim panel
XTo open:loosenside trim panel at the
top and fold it down in the direction of the
arrow.
XTo close:insert side panel .
Tail lamp
XSwitch off the lights.
XOpen the trunk.
XOpen the side trim panel (Ypage 114).
XRelease and remove connector.
XPress retaining clips at the same time in
the direction of the arrows.
XPull the bulb holder out with the bulbs.

XBrake lamp/rear fog lamp/backup
lamp:remove the corresponding bulb from
the bulb holder.
XInsert the new bulb into the bulb holder.
XTurn signal lamp:lightly press the bulb
into the bulb holder, turn it counter-
clockwise and remove it from bulb holder.
XInsert the new bulb into the bulb holderand
turn it clockwise.
XReinsert the bulb holderand engage on
retaining clips .
XRe-establish contact with the connector.
XClose the side trim panel (Ypage 114).
Windshieldwipers
Switching the windshield wipers on/
off
!Do not operate the windshield wipers
when the windshield is dry, as this could
damage the wiper blades. Moreover, dust
that has collected on the windshield can
scratch the glass if wiping takes place when
the windshield is dry.
If it is necessary to switch on the windshield
wipers in dry weather conditions, always
use washer fluid when operating the
windshield wipers.
!If the windshield wipers leave smears on
the windshield after the vehicle has been
washed in an automatic car wash, wax or
other residues may be the reason for this.
Clean the windshield using washer fluid
after washing the vehicle in an automatic
car wash.

!Vehicles with a rain sensor: if the
windshield becomes dirty in dry weather
conditions, the windshield wipers may be
activated inadvertently. This could then
damage the windshield wiper blades or
scratch the windshield.
For this reason, you should always switch
off the windshield wipers in dry weather.
Vehicles witharain sensor:in the or
position, the appropriate wiping
frequency is automatically set according to
the intensity of the rain. In the position,
the rainsensor is more sensitive than in
the position, causing the windshield
wipers to wipe more frequently.
If the wiper blades are worn, the windshield
will no longer be wiped properly. This could
prevent you from observing the traffic
conditions.Replace the wiper blades twice a
year, ideally in spring and fall.

Notes on using climate control
Automatic climate control
The following contains notes and
recommendations on optimum use of the
automatic climate control.
RSwitch on the air-conditioning system by
turning control knob clockwise to the
desired position (except position0).
RSet the temperature to 72 ‡ (22 †).
RRecommendation for preventing
fogged up windows with low outside
temperatures or rain:switch on for
the air distribution and switch and
off if possible (Ypage 128).
In air-recirculation mode, switch off
(Ypage 131).
Set airflow control to a setting between
3and6(Ypage 128).
RRecommendation for rapid cooling or
heating of the vehicle interior:briefly set
airflow control to a setting between3
and6(Ypage 128).
RRecommendation for a constant
vehicle interior temperature:set airflow
control to a setting between1and3
(Ypage 128).
RRecommendation for air distribution in
the winter:set and
(Ypage 128).
Recommendation for air distribution in
the summer:set or and
(Ypage 128).
ROnly use the "Windshield defrosting"
function briefly until the windshield is clear
again.
ROnly use air-recirculation mode briefly, e.g.
if there are unpleasant outside odors or
when in a tunnel. The windows could
otherwise fog up, since no fresh air is drawn
into the vehicle in air-recirculation mode.
RVehicles with COMAND:if you change the
settings of the climate control system, the
climate status display appears for three
seconds at the bottom of the screen in the
COMAND display. See also the separate
COMAND operating instructions. You will
see the currentsettings of the various
climate control functions.
ECO start/stop function
During automatic engine switch-off, the ECO
start/stop function only operates at a
reduced capacity. If you require the full
climate control output, you can switch off the
ECO start/stop function by pressing the ECO
button (Ypage 140).

ROnly available on vehicles for Canada:
use the residual heat function if you want
to heat or ventilate the vehicle interior
when the ignition is switched off. The
residual heat function can only be activated
or deactivated with the ignition switched
off.
RVehicles with COMAND:if you change the
settings of the climate control system, the
climate status display appears for three
seconds at the bottom of the screen in the
COMAND display. See also the separate
COMAND operating instructions. You will
see the currentsettings of the various
climate control functions.
ECO start/stop function
During automatic engine switch-off, the ECO
start/stop function only operates at a
reduced capacity. If you require the full
climate control output, you can switch off the
ECO start/stop function by pressing the ECO
button (Ypage 140).

switch on climate control primarily using
the button.
Activating/deactivating cooling with
air dehumidification
Points to observe before use
If you deactivate the "Cooling with air-
dehumidification" function, the air inside the
vehicle will not be cooled. The air inside the
vehicle will also not be dehumidified. The
windows can fog up more quickly. Therefore,
only deactivate the "Cooling with air-
dehumidification" function briefly.
The cooling with air dehumidification function
is only available when the engine is running.

Problems with the "Cooling with air dehumidification" function

Setting climate control to automatic
Points to observe before use
The automatic function is only available in
conjunction with dual-zone automatic climate
control.
In automatic mode, the set temperature is
maintained automatically at a constant level.
The system automatically regulates the
temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow
and the air distribution.
The automatic mode functions optimally
when the "Cooling with air dehumidification"
function is activated. If necessary, cooling
with air dehumidification can be deactivated.
If you deactivate the "Cooling with air-
dehumidification" function, the air inside the
vehicle will not be cooled. The air inside the
vehicle will also not be dehumidified. The
windows can fog up more quickly. Therefore,
only deactivate the "Cooling with air-
dehumidification" function briefly.

XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock (Ypage 137).
XSet the desired temperature.
XTo activate:press the button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights
up. Automatic air distribution and airflow
are activated.
XTo switch to manual mode:press the

The indicator lamp in the button goes
out. Automatic air distribution and airflow
are deactivated.

vehicle.
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock (Ypage 137).
XTo increase/reduce:turn control
clockwise or counter-clockwise
(Ypage 121). Only change the temperature
setting in small increments. Start at 72 ‡
(22 †).
Dual-zone automatic climate control
Different temperatures can be set for the
driver's and front-passenger sides.
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock (Ypage 137).
XTo increase/reduce:turn control or
clockwise or counter-clockwise
(Ypage 123). Only change the temperature

closed if the adjusters are turned clockwise
until they engage.

until the desired symbol appears in the
display.

This function is only available with dual-zone
automatic climate control.

The temperature setting for the driver's
side is not adopted for the front-passenger
side.
XTo deactivate:press the button.
The indicator lamp in the button goes
out.
The temperature setting for the driver's
side is adopted for the front-passenger
side.

Defrosting the windshield
You can use this function to defrost the
windshield or to defrost theinside of the
windshield and the side windows.
iYou should only select the "Windshield
defrosting" functionuntil the windshield is
clear again.
XTurn the SmartKey to position2in the
ignition lock (Ypage 137).
XTo activate:press the button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights
up.
The climate control system switches to the
following functions:
Rhigh airflow
Rhigh temperature
Rairdistribution to the windshield and
front side windows
Rair-recirculation mode off
iThe "Windshield defrosting" function
automatically sets the blower output to the
optimum defrosting effect. As a result, the
airflow may increase or decrease
automatically after the button is pressed.
iYou can adjust the blower output
manually while the "Windshield defrosting"
function is in operation:
RAutomatic climate control: turn airflow
control clockwise or counter-
clockwise (Ypage 121).
RDual-zone automatic climate control:
press the or button.
XTo deactivate:press the button.
The indicator lamp in the button goes
out. The previously selected settings are
restored. Air-recirculation mode remains
deactivated.
or
XDual-zone automatic climate control: press
the button.
The indicator lamp in the button goes
out. Airflow and air distribution are set to
automatic mode.
or
XAutomatic climate control: turn
temperature control clockwise or
counter-clockwise (Ypage 121).
Dual-zone automatic climate control: turn
temperature control or clockwise or
counter-clockwise (Ypage 123).
MAX COOL maximum cooling
The MAX COOL function is only available in
vehicles for the USA.
MAX COOL is only operational when the
engine is running.
XTo activate:press the button.
The indicator lamp in the button lights up.
XTo deactivate:press the button
again.
The indicator lamp goes out. The previously
selected settings are restored.
When you activate MAX COOL, climate
control switches to the following functions:
Rmaximum cooling
Rmaximum airflow
Rair-recirculation mode on
Defrosting the windows
Windows fogged up on theinside
Automatic climate control
XActivate the "Cooling with air
dehumidification" function.
XIf the windows continue to fog up, activate
the "Windshield defrosting" function.
iYou should only select this setting until
the windshield is clear again.
