SmartKey
Important safety notes
G WARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could: R
open the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users. R
get out and disrupt traffic. R
operate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they: R
release the parking brake. R
shifting the automatic transmission out of
park position PR
Start the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.
G WARNING
If you attach heavy or large objects to the
SmartKey, the SmartKey could be uninten-
tionally turned in the ignition lock. This could
cause the engine to be switched off. There is a
risk of an accident.
Do not attach any heavy or large objects to the
SmartKey. Remove any bulky key rings before
inserting the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
! Keep the SmartKey away from strong mag-
netic fields. Otherwise, the remote control
function could be affected.
Strong magnetic fields can occur in the vicin-
ity of powerful electrical installations.
Do not keep the SmartKey: R
with electronic devices, e.g. a mobile phone
or another SmartKey. R
with metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal foil. R
inside metallic objects, e.g. a metal case
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO start function: do
not keep the SmartKey in the trunk. Otherwise, the SmartKey may not be detected, e.g. when
starting the engine using the Start/Stop button.

any of th e vehicl e occupant s if there is a Smart -
Key in th e vehicle.
Locking and unlocking You can start , loc k or unloc k th e vehicl e usin g
KEYLESS-GO . To do this, you only need carry th e
SmartKey wit h you. You can combine th e func-
tion s of KEYLESS-GO wit h those of a conven -
tional SmartKey. Unloc k th e vehicl e by usin g
KEYLESS-GO , for instance , and loc k it usin g th e
7 butto n on th e SmartKey.
The driver's door and th e door at whic h th e han -
dle is used , mus t bot h be closed. The SmartKey
mus t be outside th e vehicle. Whe n locking or
unlocking wit h KEYLESS-GO , th e distanc e
between th e SmartKey and th e corresponding
door handle mus t no t be greate r than 3 ft (1 m).
A chec k whic h periodically establishes a radi o
connection between th e vehicl e and th e Smart -
Key determine s whether a valid SmartKey is in
th e vehicle. This occurs, for example: R

To unlock th e trunk lid : pull trunk lid han -
dle C .
Deactivating and activating If you do no t inten d to use th e vehicl e for a lon -
ger period of time, you can deactivat e KEYLESS -
GO. The SmartKey will then use ver y littl e power,
thereby conserving battery power. Fo r th e pur-
poses of activation/deactivation , th e vehicl e
mus t no t be nearby. X
To deactivate: press th e 7 butto n on th e
SmartKey twice in rapi d succession .
The battery chec k lamp of th e SmartKey
flashes twice briefl y and lights up once , then
KEYLESS-GO is deactivated ( Y
page 72).X
To activate: press any butto n on th e Smart -
Key.
or X
Inser t th e SmartKey int o th e ignition lock.
KEYLESS-GO and all of it s associated features
are available again .

Changing the settings of the locking
system You can change the settings of the locking sys-
tem. This means that only the driver's door and
the fuel filler flap are unlocked when the vehicle
is unlocked. This is useful if you frequently travel
on your own. X
To change the setting: press and hold the
6 and 7 buttons simultaneously for
approximately six seconds until the battery
indicator lamp flashes twice ( Y
page 72).
If the setting of the locking system is changed
within the signal range of the vehicle, pressing
the 7 or 6 button:R
locks or R
unlocks the vehicle
The SmartKey now functions as follows: X
To unlock: press the 6 button once.X
To unlock centrally: press the 6 button
twice. X
To lock centrally: press the 7 button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as fol-
lows: X
To unlock the driver's door: touch the inner
surface of the door handle on the driver's
door. X
To unlock centrally: touch the inner surface
of the door handle on the front-passenger
door or the rear door. X
To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles. X
To restore the factory settings: press and
hold the 6 and 7 buttons simultane-
ously for approximately six seconds until the
batter y check lamp flashes twice
( Y
page 72).
Mechanical key
General notes
If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO,
use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door or the trunk lid, the anti-
theft alarm system will be triggered ( Y
page 67). There are several ways to turn off the alarm: X
To deactivate the alarm with the key: press
the 6 or 7 button on the key.
or X
Insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or X
To deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-GO:
press the Start/Stop button in the ignition
lock. The SmartKey must be in the vehicle.
or X
Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the vehi-
cle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked auto-
matically. X
To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
SmartKey into the ignition lock.
Removing the mechanical key

Push release catch C in the direction of the
arrow and at the same time remove mechan-
ical key D from the SmartKey.

SmartKey battery
Important safety notes
G WARNING
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive substan-
ces. If batteries are swallowed, it can result in
severe health problems. There is a risk of fatal
injury.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If
a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately.
The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may require special handling
and regard for the environment. National guide-
lines must be observed during disposal. In Cal-
ifornia, see www.dtsc.ca.gov/
HazardousWaste/Perchlorate/index.cfm .
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the
battery replaced at a qualified specialist work-
shop.
Checking the battery
X
Press the 7 or 6 button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lamp C lights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lamp C does not light up briefly.X

i If the SmartKey battery is checked within
the signal reception range of the vehicle,
pressing the 7 or 6 button:R
locks or R
unlocks the vehicle
i You can get a battery at any qualified spe-
cialist workshop. Replacing the battery You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery. X
Take the mechanical key out of the SmartKey
( Y
page 71).
X
Press mechanical key D into the opening in
the SmartKey in the direction of the arrow
until battery tray cover C opens. When doing
so, do not hold cover C shut.X
Remove battery tray cover C .
X
Repeatedly tap the SmartKey against your
palm until battery
