before starting the engine.
G WARNING
The exterior mirror on the front-passenger
side reduces the size of the image. Visible
objects are actually closer than they appear.
This means that you coul dm isjudge the dis-
tance from road users traveling behind, e.g.
when changing lane .T here is ar isk of an acci-
dent.
For this reason, alway sm ake sure of the
actua ld istance from the road users traveling
behind by glancing over you rs houlder. X
Turn the SmartKey to position G or H in the

Electrolyte ma ye scape if the glas sinana ut o-
matic anti-glare mirror breaks .T he electrolyte
is harmfu la nd causes irritation. It must not
come into contact with your skin, eyes, res-
piratory organs or clothing or be swallowed.

Replacing the wiper blades
Important safety notes
G WARNING
If the windshield wiper sb egin to move while
yo ua re changing the wiper blades, yo uc ould
be trapped by the wiper arm .T here is ar is ko f
injury.
Alway ss witch off the windshield wiper sa nd
ignition before changing the wiper blades.
! To avoid damaging the wiper blades, make
sure that yo ut ouch only the wiper arm of the
wiper.
! Neve ro pe nt he hoo difaw in dshield wiper
arm ha sb ee nf olded away from the wind-
shield.
Neve rf ol daw in dshield wiper arm withou ta
wiper blad eb ac ko nto the windshield.
Hol dt he windshield wiper arm firmly when
yo uc hange the wiper blade. If yo ur elease the
windshield wiper arm withou taw ip er blade
and it falls onto the windshield ,t he windshield
may be damaged by the force of the impact.
Mercedes-Benz recommend st hat yo uh av e
the wiper blades changed at aq uali fied spe-
cialist workshop.

Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO or KEY-
LESS-G Os tart function: remove the Smart-
Key from the ignition lock. X
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-
GO start function: switch off the engine.X

Activating/deactivating X
Turn the SmartKey to position Z in the igni-
tion lock or remove it ( Y
page 122).X
Press the K button.
The indicator lamp in the K button lights
up or goes out.
The indicator lamp in the button indicates that
the respective function is activated.

Air vents
Important safety notes
G WARNING
Very hot or very cold air can flow from the air
vents. This could resul tinb urns or frostbite in
the immediate vicinity of the air vents. There
is ar isk of injury.
Make sure that all vehicle occupants always
maintain as ufficient distance to the air out-
lets. If necessary ,r edirect the airflow to
another area of the vehicle interior.
In order to ensure the direct flow of fresh air
through the air vents into the vehicle interior,
please observe the following notes: R
keep the air inlet between the windshield and
the hood free of blockages, such as ice, snow
or leaves. R
never cover the air vents or air intake grilles in
the vehicle interior.
i For optimal climate control in the vehicle,
open the air vents completely and set the
adjusters to the central position. Setting the air vents

Climate control

operates independently of the ECO start/stop
automatic engine switch-off function.

Ignition lock
As soon as the ignition is switched on, all the
indicator lamps in the instrument cluster light
up.
For further information on situations in which an
indicator lamp either fails to go out after the
engine is started or lights up while driving,
please refer to "Warning and indicator lamps in
the instrument cluster" ( Y
page 219).
If Start/Stop button C has not yet been
pressed, this is the same as the SmartKey being
removed from the ignition. X
To switch on the power supply: press
Start/Stop button C once.
The power supply is switched on. You can now
activate the windshield wipers, for example.
The power supply is switched off again if: R
the driver's door is opened and R
you press Start/Stop button C twice when in
this position X
To switch on the ignition: press Start/Stop
button C twice.
The ignition is switched on.
If you press Start/Stop button C once when
in this position, the ignition is switched off
again.
Removing the Start/Stop button
You can remove the Start/Stop button from the
ignition lock and start the vehicle as normal
using the SmartKey.
You can only switch between Start/Stop button
mode and SmartKey operation when the vehicle
is stationary. You must also engage park position ] .X
Remove Start/Stop button C from ignition
lock D .
You do not have to remove the Start/Stop but-
ton from the ignition lock when you leave the
vehicle. You should, however, alway st ake the
SmartKey with you when leaving the vehicle. As
long as the SmartKey is in the vehicle: R
the vehicle can be started using the Start/
Stop button R
the electrically powered equipment can be
operated
Starting the engine

G WARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could: R
open the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users. R
get out and disrupt traffic. R
operate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they: R
release the parking brake. R
shifting the automatic transmission out of

Start the engine.
There is ar isk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, alway st ake the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.
G WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There
is ar isk of fatal injury. Therefore never leave
the engine runnin gine nclosed spaces with-

Flammable materials introduced through
environmental influence or by animals can
ignite if in contact with the exhaust system or
parts of the engine that hea tu p. There is ar isk
of fire.
Carry out regular checks to make sure that
there are no flammable foreig nm aterials in
the engine compartment or in the exhaust
system.
General notes During ac old start, the engine runs at higher
speeds to enabl et he catalytic converter to
reach its operating temperature. The sound of
the engine may change during this time.

Starting procedure with the SmartKey To start the engine using the SmartKey instead
of the Start/Stop button, pul lt he Start/Stop

Turn the SmartKey to position I in the igni-
tion lock ( Y
pag e1 22) and release it as soon
as the engine is running.
Starting procedure with the Start/Stop
button The Start/Stop button can be used to start the
vehicl em anually without inserting the SmartKey
into the ignitio nl ock. The Start/Stop button
must be inserted in the ignitio nl ock and the
SmartKey must be in the vehicle. This mode for
starting the engine operates independently of
the ECO start/stop automatic engine start func-
tion.
You can start the engine if av ali dS martKey is in
the vehicle. Switch off the engine and always
take the SmartKey with you when leaving the vehicle, even if you only leave it for as hort time.
Pay attention to the important safety notes. X

You can als os tart you re ngine via you rs mart-
phone from outside the vehicle. In this case, the
previousl ys elected climate control setting is
activated. In this way you can cool or heat the
interior of the vehicl eb efore starting the jour-
ney.
Only start the engine via you rs martphone if it is
safe to start and run the engine where you rv ehi-
cle is parked.
Observe the lega ls tipulations in the area where
you rv ehicl eisp arked .E ngine start via smart-
phone may be limited to certain countries or
regions.
You can execute am aximu moft wo consecutive
starting attempts via you rs martphone. If you
insert the SmartKey into the ignitio nl ock, you
can carry out two more starting attempts.
Once you have started the engine, you can
switch the engine off via you rs martphone at any
time.
You can only start the engine via you rs mart-
phone if: R
the SmartKey is in the ignitio nl ockR

the anti-theft alarm system is not activated R

Always secure the engine against uninten-
tional starting before carrying out mainte-
nance or repair work.
Make sure that the engine cannot be started via
you rs martphone before carrying out mainte-
nance or repairs. You can prevent an engine
start via you rs martphone, for example, if you:R
switch on the hazard warning lamps R
do not lock the doors R
open the hood
Pulling away
General notes
G WARNING
If the engine spee disa bove the idling speed
and you engage transmission position D or R ,
the vehicl ec ould pul la wa ys uddenly .T here is
ar isk of an accident.
When engaging transmission position D or R ,
alway sf irmly depress the brake peda la nd do
not simultaneously accelerate.
Depress the accelerator carefully when pulling
away.
The vehicl el ocks centrally once you have pulled
away. The locking knobs in the doors drop down.
You can open the doors from the insid eata ny
time.
You can als od eactivate the automatic locking
feature ( Y
pag e1 87).
It is possible to shift the transmission from posi-
tion ] to the desired position only if you
depress the brake pedal. Only then can the
parking lock be deactivated.
All vehicles (except Mercedes-AMG vehi-
cles): if you do not depress the brake pedal, the
DIRECT SELECT lever can still be moved but the
parking lock remains engaged.
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: if you do not depress
the brake pedal, the selector lever can still be
moved but the parking lock remains engaged.

Problem

The engine does not
start. You cannot hear
the starter motor. The on-board voltage is too low because the battery is too weak or
discharged. X

Allow the starter motor to cool down for approximately two minutes. X

The engine is not running
smoothly and is misfir-
ing. There is am alfunction in the engine electronics or in am echanical
componen toft he engine management system.X
Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic converter
and damage it. X
Have the cause rectified immediately at aq ualified specialist work-
shop.
The coolant temperature
gauge shows av alue
above 248 ‡( 120 †).
The coolant warning
lamp may also be on and
aw arning tone may
sound. The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no
longer being cooled sufficiently. X
Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant to
cool down. X
Check the coolant level ( Y
page 260). Observe the warning notes
as you do so and add coolant if necessary.
DYNAMIC SELEC Tb utton (all vehicles
except Mercedes-AMG vehicles) Use the DYNAMIC SELECT button to change the
drive program. Depending on the drive program
selected the following vehicle characteristics
will change: R
the drive (engine and transmission manage-
ment) R
the suspension (vehicles with damping sys-
tem or AMG adaptive sport suspension sys-
tem) R
the steering R
the availability of the ECO start/stop function R
the climate control:
Each time you start the engine with the Smart-
Key or the Start/Stop button, drive program C is
activated. For further information about starting
the engine, see ( Y
page 125). X
Press DYNAMIC SELECT button C as many
times as necessary until the desired drive
program is selected.
The selected drive program appears in the
multifunction display .A fter five seconds the
display goes out and the status icon of the
selected drive program appears.128

Holding the vehicle stationary on uphill
gradients
G WARNING
If the clutch overheats, the electronic man-
agement system is automatically deactivated.
This interrupts the power transmission. The
vehicl em ay ,f or example, roll backwards on
gradients. There is ar isk of an accident.
Never hold the vehicl es tationary on uphill
gradients by depressing the accelerator.
The clutch may overheat if you hold the vehicle
stationary on uphill gradients by depressing the
accelerator pedal. If the clutch overheats, a
warning tone sounds.
All vehicle s( except Mercedes-AMG vehi-
cles): the Stop Vehicle Shift to 'P'
Leave Engine Running display message
appears in the multifunction display .Y ou will
only be abl etoc ontinue you rj ourney once the
clutch has coole dd ow na nd the display mes-
sage in the multifunction display has disap-
peared.
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: the Trans. Oil
Overheated Drive on with Care display
message appears in the multifunction display.
Do not hold the vehicl es tationary on uphill gra-
dients by depressing the accelerator pedal.
Instead, only ever hold the vehicl es tationary on
uphill gradients by: R
depressing the brake pedal R
activating the HOLD function R
engaging the electric parking brake
Kickdown Use kickdown for maximu ma cceleration.X
Depress the accelerator peda lb eyond the
pressure point.
The automatic transmission shifts to al ower
gea rd epending on the engine speed.X
Ease off the accelerator peda lo nce the
desired spee disr eached.
The automatic transmission shifts back up.
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: it is only possible to
use kickdown in the automatic drive program
and the temporary manua ld rive program M .
When manua ld rive program M is permanently
activated, kickdown is not possible. For further information on kickdown in manual
drive program M ( Y
pag e1 38).
Rocking the vehicle free Shifting back and forth between transmission
positions [ and ^ can help to free up the
vehicl eifitg ets stuck in mud or snow. The vehi-
cle's engine management system limits the
spee dtoam aximu mof5m ph (9 km/h) when
shifting back and forth. To shift repeatedly
between transmission positions [ and ^ ,
move the DIRECT SELECT leve rupa nd down
pas tt he point of resistance.
Drive programs

The fuel consumption possibly being higher
as ar esult of the later automatic transmission
shift points.134

For maximum acceleration, depress the
accelerator pedal beyond the pressure point.
The automatic transmission shifts to al ower

Shift back up once the desire ds peed is
reached. During kickdown, yo uc annot shift gears using
the steering wheel paddl es hifters.
If yo ua pply ful lt hrottle ,t he automatic trans-
missio ns hifts up to the next gea rw he nt he
maximum engine speed is reached .T hi sp re-
vents the engine from overrevving.
Mercedes-AMG vehicles: it is only possible to
use kickdown in temporary manual drive pro-
gram M .W he nm anual drive program M is per-
manently activated, kickdown is not possible.
Problems with the transmission Problem
