Overview of driving safety systems
In this section, you will find information aboutthe following driving safety systems:

Important safety notes
If you fail to adapt your driving style or if you areinattentive, the driving safety systems can nei-ther reduce the risk of an accident nor overridethe laws of physics. Driving safety systems aremerely aids designed to assist driving.
You are responsible for maintaining the distanceto the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed, forbraking in good time, and for staying in lane.Always adapt your driving style to suit the pre-vailing road and weather conditions and main-tain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.Drive carefully.
The driving safety systems described only workas effectively as possible when there is ade-quate contact between the tires and the roadsurface. Please pay special attention to thenotes on tires, recommended minimum tiretread depths, etc. (Ypage 291).
In wintry driving conditions, always use wintertires (M+S tires)and if necessary, snow chains.Only in this way will the driving safety systemsdescribed in this section work as effectively aspossible.
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
General information
ABS regulates brake pressure in such a way thatthe wheels do not lock when you brake. Thisallows you to continue steering the vehicle whenbraking.
The%ABS warning lamp in the instrumentcluster lights up when the ignition is switchedon. It goes out when the engine is running.
ABS works from a speed of about 5 mph(8 km/h), regardless of road-surface conditions.ABS works on slippery surfaces, even when youonly brake gently.
Important safety notes
iObserve the "Important safety notes" sec-tion (Ypage 61).
GWARNING
If ABS is malfunctioning, the wheels could
lock when braking. The steerability and brak-
ing characteristics would be severely affec-
ted. There is an increased danger of skidding
and accidents.
Drive on carefully. Have ABS checked imme-
diately at a qualified specialist workshop.
When ABS is malfunctioning, other systems,including driving safety systems, will alsobecome inoperative. Observe the informationon the ABS warning lamp (Ypage 222)and dis-play messages which may be shown in theinstrument cluster (Ypage 194).
Braking
XIf ABS intervenes:continue to depress thebrake pedal vigorously until the braking sit-uation is over.
XTo make a full brake application:depressthe brake pedal with full force.
If ABS intervenes when braking, you will feel apulsing in the brake pedal.
The pulsating brake pedal can be an indicationof hazardous road conditions, and functions as areminder to take extra care while driving.
BAS (Brake Assist System)
General information
BAS operates in emergency braking situations.If you depress the brake pedal quickly, BASautomatically boosts the braking force, thusshortening the stopping distance.

For this reason, in the event of heavy rain or inconditions in which hydroplaning may occur,you must drive in the following manner:
Rlower your speed
Ravoid ruts
Ravoid sudden steering movements
Rbrake carefully
Driving on flooded roads
!Do not drive through flooded areas. Checkthe depth of any water before driving throughit. Drive slowly through standing water. Oth-erwise, water could enter the vehicle interioror engine compartment. It can then damagethe engine's or automatic transmission'selectronic components. It can also be suckedin by the engine's air intake connection andcause engine damage.
Winter driving
GWARNING
If you shift down on a slippery road surface in
an attempt to increase the engine's braking
effect, the drive wheels could lose their grip.
There is an increased danger of skidding and
accidents.
Do not shift down for additional engine brak-
ing on a slippery road surface.
GDANGER
If the exhaust pipe is blocked or adequate
ventilation is not possible, poisonous gases
such as carbon monoxide (CO) may enter the
vehicle. This is the case, e.g. if the vehicle
becomes trapped in snow. There is a risk of
fatal injury.
If you leave the engine or the auxiliary heating
running, make sure the exhaust pipe and area
around the vehicle are clear of snow. To
ensure an adequate supply of fresh air, open a
window on the side of the vehicle that is not
facing into the wind.
Have your vehicle winter-proofed at a qualifiedspecialist workshop at the onset of winter.
Drive particularly carefully on slippery road sur-faces. Avoid sudden acceleration, steering andbraking maneuvers. Do not use cruise control orActive Distance Assist DISTRONIC.
If the vehicle threatens to skid or cannot bestopped when moving at low speed:
XShift the transmission to position\\.
XTry to bring the vehicle under control usingcorrective steering.
The outside temperature indicator is notdesigned to serve as an ice-warning device andis therefore unsuitable for that purpose.Changes in the outside temperature are dis-played after a short delay.
Indicated temperatures just above the freezingpoint do not guarantee that the road surface isfree of ice. The road may still be icy, especially inwooded areas or on bridges.
You should pay special attention to road condi-tions when temperatures are around freezingpoint.

Driving systems
Cruise control
General notes
Cruise control maintains a constant road speedfor you. It brakes automatically in order to avoidexceeding the set speed. On long and steepdownhill gradients, especially if the vehicle isladen, you must select a low gear in good time.You need to shift manually using the steeringwheel paddle shifters beforehand. By doing so,you will make use of the braking effect of theengine. This relieves the load on the brake sys-tem and prevents the brakes from overheatingand wearing too quickly.
When the engine is running, you can use thecruise control lever to limit the speed to anyspeed between 20 mph (30 km/h) and the tech-nically permitted maximum speed of the vehicle.
Use cruise control if road and traffic conditionsmake it appropriate to maintain a steady speedfor a prolonged period.

4MATIC, together with ESP®, improves the trac-tion of your vehicle whenever a drive wheelspins due to insufficient grip.

If a drive wheel spins due to insufficient grip:
ROnly depress the accelerator pedal as far asnecessary when pulling away.
RAccelerate less when driving.
iIn wintry driving conditions, the maximumeffect of 4MATIC can only be achieved if youuse winter tires (M+S tires), with snow chainsif necessary.
DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL
General notes
DYNAMIC BODY CONTROL offers improveddriving comfort and continuously controls thecalibration of the dampers. The damping char-acteristics adapt to the current operating anddriving situation.
The damping is tuned individually to each wheeland depends on:
Ryour driving style, e.g. sporty
Rthe road surface conditions
Rthe drive program selected
The drive program can be set using theDYNAMIC SELECT button (Ypage 129).
Selecting Comfort mode
In theComfortdrive program, the driving char-acteristics of your vehicle are more comforta-ble. Therefore, select this drive program if youprefer a more comfortable driving style. Alsoselect theComfortdrive program when drivingfast on straight roads, e.g. on straight stretchesof highway.
XPress DYNAMIC SELECT button (Ypage 129)as many times as necessary until theCom-fortdrive program is selected.
Selecting Sport mode
The firmer setting of the suspension tuning intheSportdrive program ensures even bettercontact with the road. Select this drive programwhen employing a sporty driving style, e.g. onwinding country roads.
XPress DYNAMIC SELECT button (Ypage 129)as many times as necessary until theSportdrive program is selected.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Important safety notes
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronicparking aid with ultrasound. It monitors the areaaround your vehicle using six sensors in thefront bumper and six sensors in the rearbumper. Parking Assist PARKTRONIC visuallyand audibly indicates the distance between yourvehicle and an object.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It isnot a replacement for your attention to yourimmediate surroundings. You are alwaysresponsible for safe maneuvering, parking andexiting a parking space. Make sure that thereare no persons, animals or objects in the maneu-vering area when you are maneuvering or park-ing.
!When parking, pay particular attention toobjects above or below the sensors, such asflower pots or trailer drawbars. Parking AssistPARKTRONIC does not detect such objectswhen they are in the immediate vicinity of thevehicle. You could damage the vehicle or theobjects.
The sensors may not detect snow and otherobjects that absorb ultrasonic waves.
Ultrasonic sources such as an automatic carwash, the compressed-air brakes of a truck ora pneumatic drill could cause Parking AssistPARKTRONIC to malfunction.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC may not functioncorrectly on uneven terrain.

Parking tips:
ROn narrow roads, drive as close to the parkingspace as possible
RParking spaces that are littered or overgrownmight be identified or measured incorrectly
RParking spaces that are partially occupied bytrailer drawbars might not be identified assuch or be measured incorrectly
RSnowfall or heavy rain may lead to a parkingspace being measured inaccurately
RPay attention to the warning messages ofParking Assist PARKTRONIC during the park-ing procedure (Ypage 164).
RYou can intervene in the steering procedureto correct it at any time. Active Parking Assistwill then be canceled
RWhen transporting a load which protrudesfrom your vehicle, you should not use ActiveParking Assist
RNever use Active Parking Assist when snowchains are installed
RMake sure that the tire pressures are alwayscorrect. This has a direct influence on theparking characteristics of the vehicle.
Use Active Parking Assist for parking spaces:
Rthat are parallel or at right-angles to the direc-tion of travel
Ron straight roads, not bends
Ron the same level as the road, e.g. not on thepavement
Detecting parking spaces
Objects located above the detection range ofActive Parking Assist will not be detected whenthe parking space is measured. These are nottaken into account when the parking procedureis calculated, e.g. overhanging loads, truck over-hangs or loading ramps. Active Parking Assistmay therefore guide you into the parking spacetoo early.
Active Parking Assist does not support you park-ing in spaces at right angles to the direction oftravel if:
Rtwo parking spaces are located directly nextto one another
Rthe parking space is directly next to a lowobstacle such as a low curb
Ryou park forwards
Active Parking Assist does not support you park-ing in spaces that are parallel or at right anglesto the direction of travel if:
Rthe parking space is on a curb
Rthe system reads the parking space as beingblocked, for example by foliage or grass pav-ing blocks
Rthe area is too small for the vehicle to maneu-ver into
Rthe parking space is bordered by an obstacle,e.g. a tree, a post or a trailer

GWARNING
If there are objects above the detection range:
Rthe Parking Package with rear view camera
may steer too early
Rthe vehicle may not stop in front of these
objects
This could cause a collision. There is a risk of

Deactivating/activating ESP®
Observe the important safety notes on ESP®

GWARNING
If you deactivate ESP®, ESP®no longer sta-
bilizes the vehicle. There is an increased risk
of skidding and an accident.
Only deactivate ESP®in the situations descri-
bed in the following.
It may be best to deactivate ESP®in the follow-ing situations:
Rwhen using snow chains
Rin deep snow
Ron sand or gravel
Deactivating/activating ESP®in Mercedes-AMG vehicles (Ypage 66).

Snow chains
GWARNING
If snow chains are mounted on the rear
wheels, the snow chains could cause abrasion
to the vehicle body or to chassis components.
This could cause damage to the vehicle or the
tires. There is a risk of an accident.
To avoid hazardous situations:
Rnever mount snow chains on the rear
wheels
Ronly mount snow chains in pairs on the
front wheels.
!On some tire sizes there is not enough spacefor snow chains. To avoid damage to the vehi-cle or tires, observe the "Wheel and tire com-binations" section under "Tires and wheels".
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you only use snow chains that havebeen specially approved for your vehicle byMercedes-Benz, or are of a correspondingstandard of quality. For more information,please contact a qualified specialist workshop.
If you intend to mount snow chains, please bearthe following points in mind:
RSnow chains may not be mounted on allwheel/tire combinations. Permissible wheel-tire combinations (Ypage 315).
ROnly use snow chains when driving on roadscompletely covered by snow. Remove thesnow chains as soon as possible when youcome to a road that is not snow-covered.
RLocal regulations may restrict the use of snowchains. Observe the appropriate regulations ifyou wish to mount snow chains.
RDo not exceed the maximum permissiblespeed of 30mph (50 km/h).
RIf snow chains are installed, you cannot useActive Parking Assist (Ypage 167).
You may wish to deactivate ESP®when pullingaway with snow chains installed . This allows thewheels to spin in a controlled manner, achievingincreased propulsive force (cutting action).

GWARNING
Underinflated or overinflated tires pose the
following risks:
Rthe tires may burst, especially as the load
and vehicle speed increase.
Rthe tires may wear excessively and/or
unevenly, which may greatly impair tire
traction.
Rthe driving characteristics, as well as steer-
ing and braking, may be greatly impaired.
There is a risk of an accident.
Follow recommended tire inflation pressures
and check the pressure of all the tires includ-
ing the spare wheel:
Rmonthly, at least
Rif the load changes
Rbefore beginning a long journey
Runder different operating conditions, e.g.
off-road driving
If necessary, correct the tire pressure.
