6 Turn the key to position 2in the igni-
tion lock.
The q preglow indica torla mp in the
ins trument clus terlights up.
6 As soon as the qpreglow indicator
lamp has gone out, turn the key in the
ignition lock to position 3and release it
as soon as the engine isrunning.
i Ifth e engine is already at operating temper-
ature, you can star tit without preglow. Starting the engine with KEYLESS GO*
You may start your
vehicle with no key in
the ignition lock using the KEYLESS GO
button on the selector lever. Yo
u can start the vehicle with no key in the
ignition lock using the KEYLESS GO button
on the selector lever, as long as the
KE YLE SSGO keyis in the vehicle.

Depress the brake pedal and keep it in
this position.
6 Release the parking brake. To do this,

The 3 indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster goes out. !
Only select reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary, otherwis eyou could damage the
transmission.
Do no tdrive at high engine speeds ifthe engine
is cold. This protects the engine.

have pulled away. The locking knobs in the do ors

You can open the doors from the inside at any
time.

6 Slowly release the clutch pedal and
carefully depress the accelerator.
! Change gear in good time. Make sure that
the enginespe eddoes notreach thered area in
the rev cou nter. There is otherwise a danger of
engine dam age.
Do not allow the wheels tospin, ifpossible. You
could otherwise damage the dri vetrain. Automatic
transmission*
i You can only move the selector lever tothe
re quired position by depressing the brake pedal.
Only then isthe selector lever lock disabled.
6 Depress the brake pedal and keep it in
this posi tion.
The selector lever lock is released.
6 Release the parking brake.

before pulling away.

6 Carefully depress the accelerator

Vehicles with a rain sensor*:
The winds cree nw iper s are aut omatically
sw itched to intermittent wipe when the vehicle is
station ary.
The intermitt ent wipe stops as soon asyou open
the driver's or passenger door. Thi sprotects per-
sons get ting intoor out of the vehicle from being
sprayed. Intermittent wipe continu eswhe nyou:

Parking and locking
You have now completed your first trip.
You have stop ped your vehicle and have
parked properly. End your trip as follows.
i When yo u close a door, thewindows on the
same sid eclose.
On steep slopes, turn the front wheels towards

The SRS performs a sel f-test at regular
intervals when the ignition is switched on
and the engine is runn ing. Malfunctions
can therefore be detected in good time.
The 1 warning lamp in the instrume nt
cluster ( =page 12) comes on when you
switch onthe ignition and goes out after a
delay of no more than a few seconds after
the engine is started.

Triggering ofbelt tensioners, belt force limiters and
airbags
In the event ofa collision, the sensor in the
airbag contro lunit evaluates important
physical data, such as duration, direction
and rate of veh icle deceleration or acceler-
ation. Based on this evaluation and pre-
emptively, the belt tensioners are the first
to be triggered by the airb agcontrol unit in
a collis ion with longi tudinal deceleration as
a function of the rate of vehicle decelera-
tion.
The front airbags are not triggered unless a
second activation threshold is reached, i.e.
an even higher rate of vehicle deceleration
in the longitudinal direction is exceeded. i
Thefront airbag on the front-passenger side
is only tri ggered if:
! the front-passenger seat oc cupancy sensor
has detected that the seat is occupied
! the PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF warning lamp
onthe centre console is not lit (
=page 64)
The belt tensioners are only activated if the seat
belt buck le tongue is correctl yengaged in the
se at belt buckle.
Criteria for the activation of belt
tensioners and airbags
To determine whether it is necessary to
activ ate a belt tensioner or airbag, the air-
bag control unit evaluates the duration and
direction of vehicle deceleration or accel-
eration during the initial phase of the colli-
sion.
The activation thresholds for the belt ten-
sioners and the airbags are variable and
are adapted in accordance with the rate of
ve hicle deceleration. This process ispre-
emptive in nature as airbag deployment
must take place during the impact and not
at the end of the collision. G

Individ ual systems could beactivated inad-
verte ntly or may not be triggered at all in the
event of an accident with a high rate of vehi-
cle deceleration. Ifthis happens, have the
SRS system checked and repaired immedi-
ately at a qualified specialist wor kshop
wh ich has the necessary specialist know-
ledg eand tools to carry out the work
require d.
Mercedes-Benz recomme nds that youuse a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre for this pur-
pose. In particular, work relevant to safety
or on safety-re lated systems must be car-

Belt tensioners do not correct:
! inco rrect sitting positions
! incorrectly worn seat belts
Belt tensioners do not pull occ upants back
towar dsthe backrests.
The belt force limiter reduces the belt
force on the occupant when a belt ten-
sioner is activated.
The belt force limiter is fine-tuned to the
front airbag, which takes over from the
seat belt a part of its restraining forces,
thus spreading the forces exerted on the
occupant over a greater area.
The automatic comfort-fit feature on the
front seats reduces the retraction force of
the seat belts.
When the igniti onisswit ched on, the belt
tensioner will be triggered:
! only if the res traint systems are opera-
tional (the 1warning lamp lights up
after the ignition is switched on and
goes out when the engine is running)

If the be lttensioners are tri ggered, you will
hear a bang that is genera lly harmless to
your hearing. A small amount of dust may
also be released. The 1warning lamp
lights up.
An indication that a belt tensioner in there ar has
been trigger edisthat the seat belt buckle is
pu lled down and is almost flush with the topof
the seat. G
Risk ofinjury The
belt tensioners in the rear only function
correctly ifthe buckl escan be pulled down
unimpeded.
Since this downwards movementmust not
be restricted:
! Do not grasp the buckles.
! Do not pl ace any obj ects un derneath
the buckles.
Ot he rwi se, the action of the belt tensioners
will beimpaired or completely ineffective.

The roll-over bars are deployed automati-
cally if it is detected that there is a risk of
the vehicle overturning.
The roll-over bars are located below the
rear head restrain ts. You may ret ract the
extended roll-o ver bars manually when the
soft top is open ( =page 344).
i You cannot lower the rear head restrai nts if
the roll-over bars are deplo yed.
If the roll-over bars deplo yau tomatically, you will
hear a ra ttling noise and the rear head restraints
ma y als obe ex tended. If a child
istravelling in the vehicle:
! secure the child us ing a child restraint
system which is appropriate to its age
and size and which has been approved
for Mercedes-Be nz, preferably on a
suitable rear seat
! make sure thatthe child is secured
throughout the trip
You can obtain child seats and informat ion
about the correct child restraint system
from any Mercedes-Benz Service Centre. Roll-over
bars (Cabriol et) G
Risk of inju ry Mak
esure that the range of movement of
the roll-over bars is not obstructed, other-
wise persons could be injured when the roll-
over bars are extended.
For this reason, always pu ll the rear seat
head restraints out to the st opif passengers
are travelling in the rear. G
Risk of injury If the
\ warning lamp inthe rev counter
remains lit for a long time after the engine
has been started, th ere is a fault.
The roll-over bars will then fail to deploy
automatically in the event ofan accident
even if the systemdetects that there is a
danger of the vehic leov erturning. Thi scould
result in serious or fata lin ju ry to yourself or
ot her vehicle occupan ts.For safety reasons,
therefore, alwa ysdrive with the roll-over
bars extend edmanually until the mal func-
tion has been rectified.
Have your vehicle checked at aqualified
specialist workshop which has the neces-
sa ry special ist knowledge and too lsto carry
out the work required. Mercedes-Benz rec-
om mends that you use a Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre for this purpose. In particu-
lar, work rel evant to safety or on safety-
related syste msmustbe carried out at a
