Getting started
Driving
6 Select either first or reverse gear.
6 Slowly release the clutch pedal and
carefully depress the accelerator.
! Change gear in good time. Make sure that
the enginespe eddoes notreach thered area in
the rev cou nter. There is otherwise a danger of
engine dam age.
Do not allow the wheels tospin, ifpossible. You
could otherwise damage the dri vetrain. Automatic
transmission*
i You can only move the selector lever tothe
re quired position by depressing the brake pedal.
Only then isthe selector lever lock disabled.
6 Depress the brake pedal and keep it in
this posi tion.
The selector lever lock is released.
6 Release the parking brake.
6 Move the selector lever to position D
or R.
i Wait for the shi ftprocess to complete
before pulling away.
6 Release the brake pedal.
6 Carefully depress the accelerator
pe dal.
i After a cold start, the automatic transmi s-
sion will shift at a higher engine spe ed. This helps
th e catalytic converter toreach its operati ng
te mperature more quickly. Dipped-

The light switch is located on the dash-
board between the steering wheel and the
driver's door.

6 Press the combination switch in the
direction of arrow 1or2.
The cor responding turn signal indicator
lamp flashes in the instrument cluster.
The combination switch moves back to
its basic position automatically after
large steering wheel movements.
i Press the switch briefly to signal a minor
change in direction. The appropriate turn signal
flashes three times. The combination switch is located on the
left of the steering column.

Th erain sensor automatically adjusts wiping fre-
quency depending onhow much rai nfalls on the
wiper sensor.
The rai nsensor is an advanced int elligent int er-
mitt ent function which shoul donlybe activated
wh en it is raining. Werecommend that you do
not acti vate the rai nsensor indry weather as dirt
or ooptical effects may cause inadv ertent wiper

Operating system
The multi-functi ondisplay changes when
you press one of these buttons on the
multi-function steering wheel.
Several functions are combined themati-
cally in each menu. For example, theAudio
menu contains functions for controlling
the rad ioor CD player. You can use a func-
tion to call up informa tion or to change the
settings for your vehicle. You can think of the order of the men
us
and function sin a menu as a circle:
! If you press the èorÿ button
repeatedly, each menu appears in turn.
! If you press the korj button
repeatedly, each menu function
appears in turn.
The
Se ttings...menu contains submenus
instead of functions with which you can
call up orchange a setting. For notes on
how to control these submenus, see the
"Settings menu" section ( =pa ge 116). The
number of menus depends on the
optional equipment installed in your vehi-
cle.

manual transmission in the "Getting

Do not exceed the maxim umengine speed
for each gear.

vehicle. They could move the gear lever and
the vehicle could roll away on down hill or
uphill gradients.
Do not change down if the maximum engine
sp eed for the desired gear has been
exceeded. The drive wheels could lock.

Automatic transmission*
You will find information about driving with
an automatic transmission in the "Getting
started" section (=page 36).
The automatic transmission adapts toyour
individual driv ing st yle automatically by
cont inuously adjusting its shift points.
These shift point adjustments take into
account the current operating and dri ving
conditions. If the operating and driving
conditions change, the automatic trans-
mission reacts by adjust ing the gearshift
program. The automatic transmission shift

range for the automatic transmission.

The shift range set isdisplayed in the
speedometer.

You can also use kickdown inmanual gear-
shift program Mifyou wish to achieve
maximum acceleration:

the pressure point.
The automatic transmissio nshifts to
the next gear down, depending on the
engine speed.
6 Shiftup again as soon as the desired
sp ee d has been reached. i
If you apply full throttle, the automatic trans-
mi ssion will shi ftto the next gear up whe nthe
ma ximum engine speed is reached. This protects
th e engine against overspeeding.
If yo ubrake or come to ahalt, the automatic
tr ansmi ssion will shift down toa gear from which
you can acc eler ate or pull away easily.
Ma nualgear shift pr ogram Misdeselected if you:
