Adjusting
You can adjust your seats either manually
or electrically*, depending on your vehi-
cle's equipment. Ad
just ing Seats

Risk of accident Only adjust the driver's
seat when the vehi-
cle is stationary. Oth erwise, you may no
lon ger be able toobserve road and traffic
cond itions and you could lose control of the
ve hicle as a result ofthe seat movin g. G
Risk of accident and injury Make sure that nobody can become trapped
as
you adjus tthe seat.
To reduce the risk of seri ousor fatal inju ries
in the event of an acci dent or heavydeceler-
ation, e.g .by an airbag inflating within milli-
seconds, observe the following points:
! All occupants must selec ta se at
position that allows the seat belt to be
worn correctly and th at is asfaraw ay
fr om the fro ntairbags as possible.
The position of the driver's seat must
allow the driver to drive the vehicle
sa fely. The distanc efrom the driver's
seat to th epedals mu st be such tha tthe
driver can fully depress the pedals. The
distance between the driver's chest and
the centre of the airbag cover must be
more than 25cm. The dri ver's ar ms
should beslightly bent when holding the
steering wheel. !
Position the front-pa ssen gerse at as far
ba ck as possible, especially if a child is
sitting on this seat or if a child is secured
in a restraint system onthis seat.
! Occ upants must always wea rthe irseat
be ltco rrec tly and po sitio ntheir back-
rest as clo seto the vertical as possible.
The head restraint should support the
ba ck ofyour head at about eye level.
! Rearward-faci ngchild restraint systems
must not be fitted to th efront-passen-
ger seat unless the front passenger air-
bag has been deactivated. In Merc edes-
Benz vehi cles, the front passenger air-
ba g is deactivated and the AIRBAG OFF
warning lamp is lit when a child restraint
system with automatic child seat recog-
nition is fitted to a front-passenger seat
in a vehicl ewith automatic child seat

footwell or be hind the seats when adj usting the
seats. You could oth erwise damage the seats
and the objects. If your ve

must be se cured in a suitable seat in the
rear of th evehicle.
If you fit a forward-f acing child sea tto
the front-passenger seat, you must
mov e the front-pass engerse at as far
ba ck as possible.
! Do not lean forward (e.g. over the pad-
ded boss of the steeri ng wheel), in par-
ticular while the vehicle is in motion.
! Do not place your fee tonthe dash-
bo ard.
! Only hold the steering wheel by the out-
side of the rim. This allows the airbag to
inflate unhindered. You could be injured
ifthe airbag inflates and you are holding
the inside of the steering wheel.
! Do not lean on the doo rsfrom inside the
vehicle. !
Do not pla ceany objects on the airbags
or betw een the airbags and th evehicle's
occupa nts.
! Do not hang any hard objects ,for exam-
ple coat hangers, on the grab handles or
coat ha ngers.
The risk ofski na bras ions or minor injuries
ca used byan airbag cannot becomp letely
eliminated due to the high speed at which
the airb agmust inf late.
Vehicles with electric seats:
Remove the key from th eignition lock or
take the KEYLESS GO key* with you, even if
yo uare onlyleavi ngthe vehicle for a short
time.
Th ese ats ca n be adjusted when the key is
removed and a door is open.
For this reason, children should never beleft
un superv ised in the vehi cle. They could
become trapped by an inadvertent seat

Folding the front-seat backrests for-
wards and backward s/easy-e ntry feature
1 Seat release
i Toallow rear passengers toent erand exit
com fortab ly, the seat moves forwards when you
fold the bac kres t forwards if the seat isin the
rear half of its adjustment range.
On vehicl eswith electric seat adjustment*, the
head restraint also lowers autom atically. Fol
ding the backrest forwards
6 Pull seat release 1forwa rds and fold
the backrest forwards.
On vehicles with manual seat adjustment:
6 Release the head restraint if necessary
and press it down.
Fol ding the backrest back
6 Fold the backr est back until the seat
and backrest engage.
On vehicles with manual seat adjustment:
6 Adjust the head restraint to the correct
position again if necessary.
You will find further information in the
"Controls in detail" section ( =page 90). You can adjust the steering wheel either
manually or electrically*, depending on
your vehicle's equipment.
! Only adjust the stee ring wheel whe nthe
ve hicle isstationary and do not pull away until
the ste ering whe elis locked in position.
If you pul laway before th esteering wheel adjust-
ment mechanism is locked in position, you could
be br iefly distracte dby the steering wheel mov-
in g unexpec tedly.
However ,the steerability of the vehicle is not

the driver's footwell:
! donot obstruct the pedals
! areproperl ysecured
The objects could otherwise get caught
between the pedal sif you accelerate or
brake suddenly. You would then not be able
to brake or accelerate. This coul dlead to
ac cident and injury. Wearing seat belts

Risk of injury A seat belt that is not worn correctl
y,or that
is not correctly engaged in the seat belt
buckle, cannot perform its intende dprotec-
tive function. It could even cause severe or
fatal injuries.
For this reason, make sure that all the occu-
pants – in particular, pregnant women –
always wear their seat belts correctly.
! The se atbelt must not be twisted and
must pass closely over your body. You
should therefore avoid wearing bulky
clot hing (e.g. winter coats). The shoul-
der section of the belt must be routed
over the middle of your shoulder – never
ar ound you rnec kor under your arm –
and must be pulled tight against the
upper body. The lap bel t must crossover
your lap as low down as possibl eat all
times, i.e. over your hip joints – not
across your stomach or lower abdom en.
If necessary, press the belt strap down a
bit and retighten bypulling the seat belt
upwards towards the belt reel. !
Do not route the belt strap over sharp or
fragile objects, especially if these are on
or inside your clothing, e.g. spectacles,
pens or keys. The belt strap could ot her-
wise be damaged and you could be
injured as a result.
! Only one person shou ld use each seat
belt at any one time. Do not allow chil-
dren to be carried on the lap of another
occupant since the child will then no
longer be secured in the event of an
accident, braking or a sudden change in
direction. This could result in severe or
fatal injuries to the child or other occu-
pants.
! Persons less than 1.50 m tall cannot
wear the seat belts correctly. Persons
less that 1.50 m tall therefore require

Driving
The < seat belt warni ng lamp in the
instrument cluster reminds you to ensure
that all occupants are wearing their seat
belts.
If the driver has not fastened his seat belt,
the < seat belt warning lamp lights up
if the doors are closed and the engine is
running. In addition, an intermitten tsignal
sounds from a speed of 25 km /hupwards.
The intermittent signal ceases:
! as soon as the driver has fastened his
seat belt
! after a maximum of 93 seconds
! when the vehicle is stationary
The < seat belt warning lamp only goes
out once the driver has fastened his seat
belt. !
Children less than 1.50 m tall and
yo un ger than 12 years ofage cannot
wear the seat belts properly. Always
secure these children in suitable child
re straint systems on seats designe dfor
this purpose ( =pag e62). Please follow
the manufacturer's installation instruc-
tions when installing child restraint sys-
tems.
! Do not secure any objects with a seat
belt if it is also being used by one of the
vehicle 'soccupan ts. G
Risk ofinjury The seat belt only prov
ides its intended
degree of protection if the seat backrest is
positioned as close to the vertical as possi-
ble, allowing th eoccupant to sit upright.
Avoid sea tpositions which do not allow the
seat belt to be routed correctly ( =
pag e25).
Therefore, po sition the bac kres ts as close to
the vertical as possible. Never drive with the
backrest inclined too far backwards. G
Risk of injury Airbags are de
signed not to be triggered in
al lac cident situations, since aco rrectly fas-
tened seat belt will often besufficient for
providing an effective degree of protection.
Airbags are not a substitute for seat belts.
To reduce the risk of severe or eve nfatal
in jury, make sure that all occupants – in par-
ticular, pregnant women – always wear their
seat be lts correctly, are seated inan upright
positio nand have their seats positio ned
almost vertic ally ( =

This section
will familiarise you with the
most important features of the restraint
systems inyour vehicle. In the event of an
accident, your vehicle may collide with
another object ,e.g. another vehicle. This
may result in rapid acceleration or deceler-
ation of your vehicle. During this acce lera-
tion or deceleration ,the vehicle occupants
will be moved in the opposite direction to
the force of the impact. Ther eis therefore
the risk of vehicle occupants injuring them-
selves on the vehicle interior or on parts of
the vehicle. The purpose of supplemental
restraint systems – first and foremost the
seat belts supplemen ted where necessary
by belt tensioners, belt force limiters and
airbags – is to minimise this ris kof injury.
However, seat belts and airbag sare gener-
ally unable to prevent injuries caused by
objects pe netrating the vehicle from the
outside. The most important restraint syst
ems are:
! Seat belts
! Restraint systems for children, since
they are the most effective means of
reducing the extent to which occu-
pants are moved in the event of an
accident
Additional protection isprovided by:
! The SRS (S upplementa
l R estraint

m)comprising:
! Belt tensioners
! Belt force limiters
! Airba gs
! Roll-over bars (Cabriolet)
i An air bag increases the degree ofprotection
for vehicle occupant swear ingas eat belt and is
therefore to be considered onl yas an additional
re strai ntsystem tothe seat be lt. Airbags are not
a substitute for wearing a seat belt correctl yat
all tim es. This is because, on the one hand, air-
bags are not triggered in all types of accid ent,as
in som esituations the irdeploy mentwould not
increase the protection enjoyed bythe vehicle
occ upants ,provided they are wearing their seat
be lts correct ly. i
And on the other hand, ai rbag deployment
only provid esincreased prote ction if the seat
bel tis worn co rrectly, because:
! theb elt helps to keep the vehicle occupant
in the best position inrelation to the airbag
! thebelt protects to a lar geextent the vehicle
oc cupant from bei ngpropelled towards the
force of impact, e.g. in the event of afrontal
collision, and is there fore better able to
reduce the risk ofinjury
In an accident in which anairbag is triggered, its
deployment will only enhanc ethe protectio npro-
vided by the seat belt, if the seat belt isworn cor-

buckle are dirty or damaged. For this rea-
son, keep the seat belt strap and buckle
clean, otherwise the belt tongu eca nnot
engage correctly.
Chec kthe seat belts regularly that they:
! arenot damag ed
! are not routed over sharp edges
! are not trapped
The seat belt strap could oth erwi se tear in
an accident.
Yo u or ot hers could be seriously or fatally
injured.
Have seat belts replaced and their anchor-
ages checked if the belts have been dam-
age dors ubjected to a heavyloa din an
accid ent.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-
mends that you only use seat belts which
have been specially approved for your vehi-

The SRS performs a sel f-test at regular
intervals when the ignition is switched on
and the engine is runn ing. Malfunctions
can therefore be detected in good time.
The 1 warning lamp in the instrume nt
cluster ( =page 12) comes on when you
switch onthe ignition and goes out after a
delay of no more than a few seconds after
the engine is started.

ist knowledge and tools to carry out the
work required. Mercedes -Benz recommends
that you use a Mercedes-Be nzService
Centre for this purpose.
In particular, work rele vant to safety or on
safe ty-re lated systems mustbe carried out
at a qualified spec ialist workshop.
Ob serve the safety regulations for th edis-
posal of belt tensioners. Any Mercedes-B enz
Service Centre can provide detail sof these
regulations. G
Risk of injury To reduce the risk of serious or fata
linjury in
an accident with a high rate of deceleration,
e.g. injuries caused by an airbaginflating
within milliseconds or in the ev ent of abrupt
br aking, please observe the following
inst ructions:
! Allve hicle occupants must select a seat
position in which it is possible to wear
the seat belt correctl ybut which is as far
back from the airba gas possible. The
position of the driver's seat must allow
the driver to drive th evehicle safely. The
driver's arms shou ldbe slightly bent
when holding the steering wheel. The
distance from th edriver's seat to the
pedals must be such that the dr iver can
fully depress the pedals.
! Vehicle occupants should wear their
seat belt correctly at all times and lean
back against the bac krest, which should
be positioned almost vertically. The
head restraint should support the back
of yo urhead at abo uteye level. !
Move the front- passenger seat as far to
the rear as possible, especially if a child
is secured in a restraint system installed
on this sea t.
! Never secure a rearward-facing child
restraint system on the front-pass enger
seat if the front-passenger front airbag
is not deactivate d.In the CLK-Class, the
fr ont-passen ger fro ntairbag is deacti-
vated if a child restraint system with
automatic child seat recognition is
secured to a front-passenger seat and
the AIRBAG OFF lamp is lit. If the auto-
matic child seat rec ognition is defective,
children must be secured in a child
restraint system ins talled on a suitable
re ar seat. If you are using aforward-f ac-
in g child seat on the fro nt-pa ssen ger
seat, the front-passenger seat must be

The driver's front airbag
inflates in front of
the steering wheel and the front-passen ger
front airbag inflates infront of and above
the glove compartment.
Front-passenger front airbag 2ison ly
triggered if:
! the front-passenger seat is laden or
occupied
! the PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF wa rning
lamp on the centre console is not lit
(= page 64).
This indicates that a child seat without
au tomatic child seat rec ognition is fit-
te d or that achild seat wit hautomatic
child seat recognition is fitte dincor-
rec tly.
! Do not place heavy objects onthe front-
pas seng er seat. Ifthe system assumes the seat
is occupied because there are objects placed on
it, the restr aint systems on the front-passe nger
si de could be triggered in the event of an acci-
dent and will then need to be replaced. Sidebags (Coupé) G
Risk of injury To reduce the risk of in

sidebag is triggered, make sure that:
! there are no other persons ,animals or
ob jects between the vehic leoccu pants
and the deployment range of the side-
bags

the area of the window in which the
sidebag is triggered.
! Vehicle occupants must wear their seat
belt correctly at all times and lean back
against the backrest, which should be
positioned almost vertically.
! Always secure children less than 1.50 m
