steer and brak eand you could therefore lose
control of the vehicl eand cause an accident. Engine oil

If the vehicle is mostly driven for short dis-
tances, it is possible that malfunctions may
occur durin gthe automa ticc leaning of the
diesel particle filter. This can lead to engine
damage. Therefore, if you frequently drive
short distances, make sure to drive on
motorways or countr yroads for 20 minutes

Downhill gradients On long and steep downhill gradients, espe-
cially if the vehicle is laden or towin gatrailer,
you must shift to alower gear in good tim eor,
on vehicles wit hautomatic transmission,
select shift range 1,2or 3.

cruise control, SPEEDTRONIC or DIS-
TRONIC PLU S.
This will use the brakin geffect of th eengine,
so les sbraki ngwill be required to maintain
the speed .This relieves the load on the brake
syste mand prevent sthe brake sfrom ove r-
heati ngand wearing too quickly. If you need
additional braking, depress the brake pedal

Never depr esst he brake pedal continuously
while the vehicle is in motion ,e.g. never cause
the brakes to rub by applying cons tant slight
pedal pressure. Thi scauses the brake system
to overheat, increases the braking distance
and can lead to the brakes failing completely.
If the brakes have been subjected to aheavy
load, do not stop the vehicle immediately ,but
drive on for ashort while. This allow sthe air-
flo wtoc ool the brakes mor equickly.
If the brakes have been used only moderately,
you should occasionally test their effective-
ness. To do this, brake more firmly from a
higher speed. This improves the grip of the
brakes.
Wet roads If driving in heavy rain for
aprolonged period
of time without braking, there may be a
delayed reaction from th ebrake swhen brak-
ing for the first time. This ma yalso occur after
the vehicle has been washed.
You have to depress the brake pedal more
firmly. Maintain agreater distance from the
vehicl einfront.
After driving on awet road or havin gthe vehi-
cle washed, brake firml ywhile paying atten-
tion to the traffic conditions. This will warm
up the brake discs, thereby drying them more
quickly and protecting them against corro-
sion.
Limited braking perfo rmance on salt
treated roads G
Risk of accident
The layer of salt on the brake discs and the
brake pads/linings may cause adelay in the
braking effect ,resultin ginas ignifican tlyl on-
ger brakin gdistance, which could lead to an
accident.
To avoid this danger, you should: R
occasionally brake carefully, without put-
ting other road users at risk, when you are
drivin gons alted roads. This helps to
remove any salt that may have started to
build up on the brake discs and the brake
pads/linings.
R maintain agreater distance to th evehicle
ahead and driv ewith particular care.
R carefully apply the brakes at the end of a
trip and immediately after commencing a
new trip, so that salt residues are removed
from the brake discs.
New brake pads/linin gs G
Risk of accident
New brake pads/lining sonly reach thei ropti-
mum braking effect after severa lhundred kil-
ometres of driving. Before this optimum brak-
ing effect is reached, you should compensate
for the reduced braking effect by applying
greater pressure when braking. This also
applies after the brake discs or the brake
pads/lining shave been replaced.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-
mends that you only have brake pads/linings
fitted to your vehicle which have been
approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles or
which correspond to an equivalent quality
standard. Brake pads/lining swhich hav enot
been approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles or
which ar enot of an equivalent quality could
affect your vehicle' soperating safety. Ty

Whil ethe vehicle can be fully con trolled at a
cer tain speed on dry roads, you must reduce
your speed on wet or icy roads to achieve the
same road safety. Otherwise, you could cause
an accident.
Pay particular attention to the road conditions

ing systems to function optimally in winter, as
thes etyres have been designed specifically
for driving on snow.
Use winter tyres of the same make and tread
on all wheels to maintain safe handling char-
acteristics. G
Risk of accident
Winter tyres with atrea ddepth of less than
4mmm ust be replace dimmediately. They are
no longe rsuitable for winter use and can no
longer provid esufficient grip. This could
cause you to lose control of you rvehicle and
cause an accident.
Alway sobserv ethe maximum permissible
speed specifie dfor the winter tyres you have
fit ted. If you fit winter tyres which have a
lower maximum permissible speed than that
of the vehicle, affix an appropriate warning
sign in the driver' sfield of vision. This can be
obtained at aqualified specialist workshop,
e.g. from aMercedes-Benz Ser vice Centre.
Under these circumstances, you shoul dalso
restrict the maximum speed of the vehicle

Cruise control lever You can operate cruise control and variable
SPEEDTRONIC with the cruise control lever.
The LIM indicator lamp on the cruise control
lever indicates which system you have selec-

i Cruise control is not deactivated if you
depress the accelerator pedal. For exam-
ple, if you accelerate briefly to over take,
cruise control adjusts the vehicle's speed
to the last speed stored after you have fin-
ished overtaking.
Making adjustments in 1km/h incre-

Briefly press the cruise contro llever to the

Cruise control is automatically deactivated if:

R you change into neutral in avehicle with
manual transmission while driving or if the
clut chis depressed for longer than 6sec-
onds

R on vehicles with automatic tra nsmission,

DISTRONIC PLUS may not detect narro wvehi-
cles driving in front, e.g. motorcycles, or vehi-
cles driving on adifferen tline. Therefore,
always pay attention to traffic condition seven
when DISTRO NICP LUS is activated. Other-
wise ,you may fai ltorecognise danger sin
time, cause an accident and injure yourself
and others. G
Risk of accident
DISTRONI CPLUS cannot take account of road
and traffi cconditions. If DISTRONI Cdoesn ot
recognise or no longer recognises the vehicle
in front ,donot activate DI STRONIC or, if it is
already active, deactivate it. This is especially
the case:
R before corners
R on filter lanes R
when changing to alane with faster moving
traffic
R in complex driving situations or where lanes
are diverted, e.g. at roadworks on amotor-
way
DI ST RONIC PLUS otherwis emaintains the
current spee dset by you or accelerates up to
the set speed.
DI ST RONIC PLUS cannot take account of
weathe rconditions. Deac tivate, or do not
activate, DISTRONIC PLUS:
R if the roads are slippery, snow-covered or
icy. The wheels could los etheir grip when
brakin goraccelerating .The vehicle could
star ttos kid.
R if the sensors are dirty or there is poo rvis-
ibility, e.g. due to snow, rain or fog. Dis-
tanc econtrol may be impaired.
Always pay attention to traffic conditions
even when DI STRONIC PLUS is activated.
Otherwise, you may fail to recognise dangers
in time, cause an accident and injure yourself
and others.
The radar sensor syste misautomatically
deactivated near radio telescope facilities
(Y page 324).
If you want DISTRONIC PLUS to assis tyou,
the radar sensor system must be activated
(Y page 208) and operational.
If ther eisnov ehicle in front ,DISTRONIC
PLUS operate sinthe sam eway as cruise
control in the spee drange between
30 km/ hand 200 km/h .Ifavehicle is driving
in front of you, DI STRONIC operates in the

Cruise control lever With the cruise control lever you can operate
DI ST RONIC PLUS and variable SPEE D-
TRONIC.
The LI Mindicator lamp on the cruise control
lever indicates which system you have selec-

Risk of accident
The vehicle can be braked when DISTRONIC
PLUS is activated. For this reason, deactivate
DISTRONIC PLUS if the vehicle is to be set in
motion by othe rmeans (e.g. in acar wash or
by towing).
You can activate DISTRONIC PLUS in the fol-
lowing circumstances:
R if the engine has been started and you have
been drivin gfor up to two minutes
R if the parkin gbrake is not applied
R if ESP ®
is acti vated
R if the transmission is in position D
R if the bonnet is closed
R if the driver' sdoor is closed and you shift
from Pto Dor your seat belt is fastened
R if the front-passenger door is closed
Activating while driving
When drivin gatspeeds below 30 km/h, you
can only acti vate DISTRONIC PLUS if the vehi-
cle in fron thas been detected and is shown
in the multifunction display. If the vehicle in
front is not shown in the multifunction display
and is no longe rbeing detected, because it
has changed lanes, for example, DISTRONIC
PLU Sisd eactivated and atone sounds. 162

PLUS operates in th esame way as cruise
control.
If as lower-moving vehicle is detected in front,
DISTRONIC PLU Scauses your vehicle to
brake and maintain apreset distance to the
vehicl einfront.
If DISTRONIC PLUS detects afaster-moving
vehicle in front ,itincrease sthe drivin gspeed,
but only up to the desired speed you have
stored. G
Risk of accident
If you depress the brake, DISTRONIC PLU Sis
deactivated unless your vehicl eisstationary.
DISTRONIC PLUS then no longe rbrake syour
vehicle. In such cases, control the distance
from vehicles travelling in front with the brake
alone. You coul dotherwis ecause an accident
and thereby injure yoursel fand others. The
driver rema insf ully responsibl efor the vehi-
cle's distance from other vehicles ,the speed
being driven and for brakin gingood time.
Changing lanes
If you wish to change to the passing lane (in
left -hand-drive vehicles, the passing lane is
the left-hand lane), DISTRONIC PLUS sup-
