Po ints toremember when the front
passen ger seat is occupied
The au tomatic front passenger air bag shutoff is
able todetect whe ther the front passenger seat
is occupied bya person or a child restra int sys‐
te m. The front passenger air bag and front
passenger knee air bag are then cor responding ly
either enabled or disabled. When ins
talling a child restra int sy stem on the
front passenger seat:
REnsure that thech ild restra int sy stem is posi‐
tioned cor rectly (→page 45).
RAlways obser vethech ild restra int sy stem
manufacturer's ins tallation instructions.
RNe ver place objects under or behind the
ch ild restra int sy stem, e.g. cushions.
RFu lly retract the seat cushion length adjust‐
ment.
RThe entire base of thech ild restra int sy stem
must alw aysre st on the seat cushion of the
front passenger seat.
RThe backrest of thefo rw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem must, as far as possible, be
re sting on the seat backrest of the front
passenger seat.
RThe child restra int sy stem must not touch the
ro of or be put under stra in by the head
re stra ints. Adjust the seat backrest inclina‐
tion and the head restra int setting accord‐
ing ly.

objects between the sitting sur face and

Objects between the sitting sur face and the
ch ild restra int sy stem could af fect the func‐
tion of the automatic front passenger airbag
shutoff.
This could result in the front passenger air‐
bag not functioning as intended during an
accident.
#Do not place any objects between the
sitting sur face and thech ild restra int
sy stem.
#The entire base of thech ild restra int
sy stem must alw aysre st on the sitting
sur face of the front passenger seat.
#The backrest of thefo rw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem must lie as flat as pos‐
sible against the backrest of the front
passenger seat.
#Alw ays comply with thech ild restra int
sy stem manufacturer's ins tallation
instructions.

If yo u secure a child in a forw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem on the front passenger seat
and you position the front passenger seat too
close tothe cockpit, in theeve nt of an acci‐
dent, thech ild could:
RCome into con tact wi th theve hicle inte‐
ri or if thePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indi‐
cator lamp is lit, forex ample.
RBe stru ck bythe air bag if the
PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
is off.
#Alw ays mo vethe front passenger seat
as far back as possible and fully retract
th e seat cushion length adjustment.
Alw ays make sure that the shoulder belt
st ra p is cor rectly routed from the seat
belt outlet on theve hicle tothe shoul‐
der belt guide on thech ild restra int sys‐
te m. The shoulder belt stra p must be
ro uted forw ards and down wards from
th eve hicle belt outlet. If necessar y,
adjustthe seat belt outlet and the front
passenger seat accordingly.
#Alw ays obser vethech ild restra int sys‐
te m manufacturer's ins tallation instruc‐
tions.
When ins talling a child restra int sy stem on the
front passenger seat, observ eth eve hicle-spe‐
cific information .
If a person is sitting in the front passenger
seat: PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF may be lit con‐
tinuously or be off, depending on the person's
st ature. Alw ays obser vethefo llowing informa‐
tion.
If th e front passenger seat is occupied by:
RAn adult or a pe rson with a build cor respond‐
ing tothat of an adult, thePA SSENGER AIR
BA G OFF indicator lamp must be off. This
indicates that the front passenger air bag is
enabled.
If th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit continuousl y,an adult or person
with a build cor responding tothat of an adult should not use
the front passenger seat.
Ins tead, they should use a rear seat.
RA person with a smaller build (e.g. a teenager
or small adult), thePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF
indicator lamp either lights up and remains lit
depending on there sult of the classification
or, alternativel y,goes out.
-PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF is off: mo ve
th e front passenger seat as far back as
possible or a person of smaller stature
should use a rear seat.
-Ifth ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit continuously: a person of
smaller stature should not use the front
passenger seat.
& WARNING Risk of injury or death when
th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp is lit
If th ePA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator
lamp remains lit af terth e sy stem self-test,
th e front passenger air bag is deactivated. It
will not be deplo yed in theeve nt of an acci‐
dent. In this case, the front passenger air bag

not interfere with the cor rect routing of Top
Te ther belt 5.
Childrestra int sy stems on the front
passenger seat
Note s onchild restra int sy stems on the front
passenger seat
Ac cident statistics show that children secured in
th ere ar seats are safer than children secured in
th e front seats. Forth is reason, Mercedes-Benz
stro ngly advises that you ins tall a child restra int
sy stem on a rear seat.
If it is absolutely necessary toins tall a child
re stra int sy stem on the front passenger seat,
alw ays obser vethe information on the automatic
front passenger air bag shutoff .
By doing this, you can avoidrisks caused by:
RAch ild restra int sy stem that is not de tected
by the automatic front passenger air bag
shutoff.
RThe unintentionally deactivated front
passenger air bag.
RIncor rect positioning of thech ild restra int
sy stem.
Fo rw ard-facing and rear wa rd-facing child
re stra int sy stems on the front passenger
seat
When using a rear wa rd-f acing child restra int sys‐
te m on the front passenger seat, the front
passenger air bag must alw ays be deactivated.
This is only the case if thePA SSENGER AIR BAG
OFF indicator lamp is lit continuously
(
→page 41).
When usingthech ild restra int sy stem on the
front passenger seat, it is essential toobser ve
th efo llowing:
RMo vethe front passenger seat as far back as
possible.
RSet the seat backrest toan almost vertical
position.
RRe tract the seat cushion length as far as pos‐
sible.
RThe entire base of thech ild restra int sy stem
must alw aysre st on the seat cushion of the
front passenger seat.
RThe backrest of thefo rw ard-facing child
re stra int sy stem must, as far as possible, be
re sting on the seat backrest of the front
passenger seat. The child restra int sy stem
must not touch thero of or be put under
st ra in by the head restra ints.
RIf necessar y,adjust the angle of the seat
backrest and the head restra int position
according ly.
RMo vethe seat cushion inclination tothe
highest, most vertical position.
RAlw ays make sure that the shoulder belt
st ra p is cor rectly routed from the seat belt
outlet of theve hicle tothe shoulder belt
guide on thech ild restra int sy stem. The
shoulder belt stra p must be routed forw ards
and down wards from the seat belt outlet.
RIf necessar y,adjust the seat belt outlet and
th e front passenger seat accordingly.
RNe ver place objects, e.g. a cushion, under or
behind thech ild restra int sy stem.
Alw ays comply with the manufacturer's ins talla‐
tion and operating instructions forth ech ild
re stra int sy stem used.

Do notrotate the head restra ints of the front and
re ar seats. Otherwise, you cannot adjust the
height and angle of the head restra ints cor rectl y.
Ad just the head restra int fore -and-aft position so
th at the head restra int is as close as possible to
th e back of your head.

The seat belt does not of ferth e intended
le ve l of pr otection if you ha venot mo vedth e
seat backrest toan almost vertical position.
When braking or in theeve nt of an accident,
yo u could slideunderneath the seat belt and
sus tain abdominal or neck injuries, forex am‐
ple.
#Ad just the seat proper lybefore begin‐
ning your journe y.
#Always ensure that the seat backrest is
in an almost vertical position and that
th e shoulder section of your seat belt is
ro uted across the center of your shoul‐
der.

System limitations
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONI Cdoes no tnecessa‐
ri ly take into account thefo llowing obs tacles:
RObs tacles bel ow the detection range, e.g.
pe rsons, animals or objects.
RObs tacles ab oveth e de tection range, e.g.
ove rhanging loads, overhangs or loading
ra mp s of truc ks.
The sensors must be free of dirt, ice and slush.
Otherwise, they may not function cor rectly.
Clean the sensors regularly, taking care not to
scratch or damage them.
Ve hicles with trailer hitch: Parking Assist
PA RKTRONI Cis deacti vatedfo rth ere ar zone
when you es tablish an elect rical connection
between your vehicle and a trailer.
Fu nction of the passive side impact pr otec‐
tion
Pa ssive side impact pr otection is an additional
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONI Cfunction whic h
wa rnsth e driver about obs tacles at the side of
th eve hicle. A warning is issued if obs tacles are
de tected between the front and rear de tection ra
nge. In order for an object tobe de tected, the
sensors in the front and rear bumpers must
de tect the object while you are driving past it.
During the parking procedure or maneuvering,
objects are de tected as theve hicle drives past.
If yo usteer in the direction of a de
tecte d obsta‐
cle and there is a risk of a lateral collision, a
wa rning is issued. The lateral segments light up
orange or red, depending on the dis tance tothe
obs tacle.

In order for lateral front or rear passenger seg‐
ments tobe displa yed, theve hicle must firs t

segments can be displa yed.
