EER CONT ROL helps youby transmitting a
noticeable steering forc eto thesteering wheel in
th e direction requiredforve hicle stabilisation.
This steering recommendation is given pa rticu‐
lar lyin thefo llowing situations:
R Both right wheels or bo thleft wheels are on
a we t or slippe ryroad sur face when you
brake.
R The vehicle starts toskid. Sy
stem limitations
ST EER CONTROL may be impaired or may not
function in thefo llowing situations:
R ESP ®
is deactivated.
R ESP ®
is malfunctioning.
R The steering is malfunctioning.

is malfunctioning, you will be assis ted

Ac tive Brake Assi stcan help youto minimise the
ri sk of a collision with vehicles or pedestrians or
to reduce the ef fects of su cha collision. If
Ac tive Brake Assi sthas de tected a risk of colli‐
sion, you will be warned visually and acousti‐
call y.
If yo u do not react tothe visual or acoustic warn‐
ing, autonomous braking can be initiated in criti‐
cal situations.
In especially critical situations, Active Brake
Assi stcan initia teautonomous braking direct ly.
In this case, the visual and acoustic warning
occurs simultaneously with the braking applica‐
tion.
If yo u apply the brake yourself in a critical situa‐
tion or apply the brake during autonomous brak‐
ing, situation-dependent braking assis tance
occu rs. The brake pressure increases up tomax‐
imum full-s top braking if necessar y.
If th e autonomous braking function or the situa‐
tion-dependent braking assis tance is trig gered,
additional pr eventive measu resfo r occupant
pr otection (PRE-SAFE ®
) may also be initiated, if
th eve hicle is equipped with these. 19 6

The individual subfunctions are available in
th efo llowing speed ranges:
Distance warning function
The dis tance warning function issues a warning
at speeds:
R From appr oximately 30 km/h, if over se veral
seconds the dis tance maintained totheve hi‐ cle tr
avelling in front is insuf ficient forthe
driving speed. The ·distance warning
lamp then lights up in the instrument clus ter.
R From appr oximately 7 km/h, if your vehicle
is critically close toave hicle or pedestrian.
An intermittent warning tone sounds and the
· distance warning lamp lights up in the
instrument clus ter.
Brake immediately or take evasive action, pr ovi‐
ded it is safe todo so and the traf fic situation
allo wsthis. Driving and parking

Sy stem limitations
The sy stem may be impaired or may not function
in thefo llowing situations:
R In sno w,rain, fog, heavy spr ay, if there is
gl are, in direct sunlight or in greatlyvarying
light conditions.
R Ifth e sensors are dirty, mis ted up, damaged
or co vered. R
Ifth e sensors malfunction due to otherradar
source inter fere nce, forex ample stro ng radar
re flections in multi-s torey car par ks.
R If a loss of tyre pressure or a defective tyre
has been de tected and displ ayed.
The sy stem may not react cor rectly:
R In compl extraf fic situations whe reobjects
cannot always be clearly identified.
R Topedestrians or vehicles if they mo ve
qu ickly into the sensor de tection range.
R Topedestrians who are hidden by other
objects.
R Ifth e typical outline of a pedestrian cann ot
be distinguished from the bac kground.
R If a pedestrian is not recognised as su ch, e.g.
due tospecial clo thing or other objects.
R On bends with a tight radius. 200

If
yo u accelerate toove rtake, forex ample, the
st ored speed is not dele ted. If youre mo veyour
fo ot from the accelerator pedal af terove rtaking,
cruise control will resume speed regulation back
to thestored speed.
Yo u can operate cruise cont rol with the cruise
control le ver.
If yo ufa ilto adapt your driving style, cruise con‐
trol can neither reduce therisk of an accident
nor override the la wsof ph ysics. It cannot take
into account road, weather or traf fic conditions.
Cruise control is only an aid. You are responsible
fo rth e dis tance totheve hicle in front, forve hi‐
cle speed, for braking in good time and forst ay‐
ing in lane.
Sy stem limitations
Cruise control may be unable tomaintain the
st ored speed on uphill gradients. The stored
speed is resumed when the gradient evens out.
Change into a lo werge ar in good time on long
and steep downhill gradients. Take particular
no te ofthis when driving a laden vehicle. By
doing so, you will make use of the braking ef fect
of the engine. This relie vesth e load on the brake sy
stem and pr events the brakes from overheat‐
ing and wearing tooqu ickl y.
Do not use cruise control in thefo llowing situa‐
tions:
R In traf fic situations whi chrequ ire frequent
ch anges of speed, e.g. in heavy traf fic, on
winding roads.
R On slippe ryroads. Accelerating can cause
th e drive wheels tolose traction and the
ve hicle could then skid.
R Ifyo u are driving when visibility is poor.
Fu nction of the limi ter
The limiter restricts the speed of theve hicle. To
re duce the speed swiftly tothe set speed, the
limiter applies the brakes automaticall y.
Yo u can limit the speed as follo ws:
R Variable: for speed limits, e.g. in built-up
areas.
R Perm anen t:for long-term speed restrictions,
e.g. when driving wi thwinter tyres fitted.
If yo ufa ilto adapt your driving style, the limiter
can neither reduce therisk of an accident nor ov
erride the la wsof ph ysics. It cannot take into

Kickdown
If yo u depress the accelera tor pedal be yond the
pressure point (kickdown), the limiter switches
to passive mode. The Limiter passivemessage
appears in the multifunction displa y.
Af ter completion of kickdown, theva riable lim‐
iter is activated again in thefo llowing situations:
R Ifth e driven speed drops below thestored
speed.
R Ifth estored speed is called up.
R Ifyo ustore a new speed. 202

engine speed is very low, cruise control or
th e limiter is deactivated. When the engine
speed approaches the maximum engine
speed, or neutral is engaged or the clutch
pedal is depressed for longer than six sec‐
onds, cruise control is deactivated.
% Onvehicles with a segment display in the
speedome ter,th e segments extending from
th e cur rent stored speed tothe end of the scale light up. If
you ha veactivated the per‐
manent limiter and a speed is stored, the
segments extending up tothestored speed
light up.
% Ifyo u per form a kickdown, theva riable lim‐
iter is swit ched topassive mode. The varia‐
ble limiter is operational again once the
speed drops below thestored speed.
% Ifyo u brake, deactivate ESP ®
or if ESP ®
inter venes, cruise control is deacti vated. The
va riable limiter is not deactivated.
When you swit choff theve hicle, the last
speed stored is cleared.
Pe rm anent limi ter
If th eve hicle should ne verexc eed a specific
speed (e.g. for driving in winter tyre mode), you
can set this speed with the permanent limiter.
Yo u do this by limiting the speed toava lue
between 160 km/h and 240 km/h in the multi‐
media sy stem (→ page 205).
Shortly before the set speed is reached, it
appears in the multifunction displa y.When you
confirm the message with %, display mes‐
sages no longer appear until you swit choff the 204

hicle. The speed will only be displa yed again
once theve hicle has been restar ted.
The permanent limiter does not switch topas‐
sive mode even du ring kickdown and the driven
speed remains below the set speed.

age: in conjunction with navigation sy stems,

hibited overtaking on theright at speeds over
80 km/h in right-hand traf fic and overtaking on
th e left in left-hand traf fic on mo torw ays and
high-speed major roads.

tion from the navigation sy stem torespond to

from the brake pedal tothe accelera tor pedal
and depress it before theve hicle begins toroll. &

nction of Parking Assist PARKTRONIC Pa
rking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronic
parking assi stance sy stem with ultrasound. It
monitors the area around your vehicle using six
sensors 1inthe front bumper and six sensors
in there ar bumper. Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
indicates visually and audibly the dis tance
between your vehicle and an object.
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONIC is on lyan aid. It is
not a substitute foryo ur attention tothe sur‐
ro undings. The responsibility for safe manoeu‐
vring and parking remains with you. Make sure
th at there are no persons, animals or objects in th
e manoeuvring area while manoeuvring and
parking in/exiting parking spaces.
In thest andard setting, an intermit tent wa rning
to ne sounds from a di stance of appr oximately
0.3 m toan obs tacle. A continuous tone sounds
from a di stance of appr oximately 0.2 m. You can
set thewa rning tone in the multimedia sy stem
so that it will sound earlier at a greater dis tance
of appr oximately 1.0 m (→ page219).
If Pa rking Assist PARKTRONIC is deacti vated,
Ac tive Parking Assist is una vailable.
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONIC displ ayinthe
mu ltimedia sy stem
If Ac tive Parking Assist is not activated and an
obs tacle is de tected in the path of theve hicle, a
pop-up window forPa rking Assist PARKTRONIC
