(engine management) in drive program I.
Glide mode is deactivated again if one of the
conditions is no longer met.

Functions of ESP®(Electronic Stability Pro‐
gr am)

WARNING Risk of skidding if ESP®is
malfunctioning
If ESP
®is malfunctioning, ESP®cannot car ry
out vehicle stabilization. In addition, other
driving saf etysy stems are switched off.
#Drive on carefull y.
#Have ESP®checked at a qualified spe‐
cialist workshop.
Yo u can select between thefo llowing modes of
ESP®:

Characteristics when ESP
®is activated
ESP
®monitors and impr oves driving stability and
traction, particular lyin thefo llowing situations:
RWhen pulling away on wet or slippe ryroads.
RWhen braking.
RIn stro ng sidewinds when you are driving
fast erthan 43 mph (70 km/h).
ESP
®can stabilize theve hicle byinter vening in
th efo llowing ways:
ROne or more wheels are braked.
RThe engine output is adap ted according to
th e situation.
ESP
®is activated everytime the engine is star‐
te d, rega rdless of whe ther ESP®wa s in SPORT
handling mode or was deactivated before the
engine was switched off.
ESP
®is inter vening if the ESP®÷ warning
lamp flashes in the instrument clus ter:
RDo not deacti vate ESP®.
ROnly depress the accelera tor pedal as far as
is necessar y.
RAdapt your drivin gst yle to suit the cur rent
ro ad and weather conditions. Cha
racteristics of activated SPORT handling
mode
& WARNING Risk of skidding due toincor‐
re ct application of SPORT handling mode
When you activate SPORT handling mode,
th ere is an increased risk of skidding and
having an accident.
#Only activate SPORT handling mode in
th e circums tances described as follo ws .
Select SPORT handling mode when theve hicle's
ow nov ersteering and under steering characteris‐
tics are desired, forex ample when driving on
specially designated roads.
Only a highly qu alified and experienced driver
should drive in SPORT handling mode or with
ESP
®switched off.
If SPORT handling mode is activated and one or
more wheels start tospin, the÷ ESP
®warn‐
ing lamp in the instrument clus terflashes. ESP®
th en only stabilizes theve hicle toa limited
deg ree.

If SPORT handling mode is activated:
RESP®only improves driving stability toa limi‐
te d deg ree.
RETS/4ETS traction control is still active.
RThe engine's torque is on lyrestricted toa
limited degree and the drive wheels can spin.
The spinning of the wheels results in a cut‐
ting action for better traction on loose sur fa‐
ces.
RESP®continues toprov ide assis tance when
th e brakes are firm lyapplied.
Cha racteristics when ESP
®is deactivated
&
WARNING Risk of skidding if ESP®is
deactivated
If yo u deactivate ESP
®, ESP®cannot car ry
out vehicle stabilization.
#ESP®should only be deactivated in the
fo llowing situations.
ESP®is deactivated if the ESP®OFF å warn‐
ing lamp lights up continuously in the instrument
clus ter:
RDriving stability will no longe r be improved.
RCrosswind Assist is no longer active.
RThe drive wheels could spin.
RETS/4ETS traction control is still active.
% Even when ESP
®is deactivated, you are still
assis tedby ESP®when braking hard .
In thefo llowing situations, it may be better to
activate SPO RThandling mode or deactivate
ESP
®:
RWhen using snow chains
RIn deep snow
Ron sand or gr avel
% Spinning the wheels results in a cutting
action which pr ovides better grip.
% Activate ESP
®as soon as the situations
described abo veno longer apply. ESP®will
ot herwise not be able tostabilize theve hicle if
th eve hicle starts toskid or a wheel starts
to spin.
If th e ESP
®÷ warning lamp lights up continu‐
ousl y,ESP®is not available due toa malfunction.
Observ e any information which may be displa yed
in the instrument clus ter:
RWa rning and indicator lamps

ETS/4ETS (Electronic Traction Sy stem)
ETS/4ETS traction control is pa rtof ESP
®.
ETS/4ETS can impr oveth eve hicle's traction by
inter vening in thefo llowing ways:
RThe drive wheels are braked individually if
they spin.
RMore drive torque is transferred tothe wheel
or wheels with traction.

press button 1.
The M SPORT handling mode warning
lamp in the instrument clus ter lights up. The
SPORT handling mode messageappears in
th e multifunction displa y.
#Todeactivate SPORT handling mode: briefly
press button 1.
The M SPORT handling mode warning
lamp in the instrument clus ter goes out.
#To deactivate ESP®: press button 1until the
å ESP®OFFwarning lamp lights up in the
instrument clus ter.The ÷ OFFmessage
appears in the multifunction displa y.
#Toactivate ESP®: brief lypress button 1.
The å ESP®OFFwarning lamp in the
instrument clus ter goes out. The ÷ON
message appears in the multifunction dis‐
pla y.
Obser vethe information on warning lamps and
display messages which may be shown in the
instrument clus ter.
RACE START
RA CE STAR T function
RACE STAR T is onlyav ailable for
Merc edes‑AMG E 63 4MATIC and
E 63 S 4MATIC models. RACE
START enables optimal vehicle accelera‐
tion from a standstill. Forth is, a suitably high-
gr ip road sur face is required, along with the tires
and vehicle being in good condition.
% RACE START is only available af terth eve hi‐
cle has been broken in (
→page 13).
% RACE START may not be used on normal
ro ads. RACE START must only be activated
and used on dedicated road circuits, not on
public roads.
Be sure toread the saf etyno tes and infor‐
mation on ESP
®(→page 21).

WARNING Risk of skidding and having
an accident from wheels spinning
When you use RACE STAR T,individual wheels
could spin and you could lose cont rol of the
ve hicle.
Depending on the ESP
®mode selected, there
is an increased risk of skidding and having an
accident.
#Make sure that no persons or obs tacles
are in the close vicinity of your vehicle.

Ifth e engine or transmission are not at operat‐
ing temp erature, the multifunction display sho ws
te mp erature 3or4 in blue. Avoid driving at
full engine output during this time.

While theve hicle is in motion, the G-Me ter
sho ws th efo rc es that are exerted on theve hicle
occupants bo thlaterally and in the direction of
tra vel. The maximum values appear in red in the
coordinate sy stem.
#To reset the G-M eter: press the left-hand
side of Touch Control.
#Select Yes.
#Pressthe left-hand Touch Control.
If yo upr ess and hold the left-hand side of Touch
Control, the function will be reset immediately.

Changing a wheel
Ve hicles with AMG Driver's Package:

non-app rove d tire types
If yo u use tire types that ha venot been adap‐
te dto changes made tothefa ctory speed
limit, this can ha vethefo llowing consequen‐
ces:
RThe tires do not exhibit there qu ired qual‐
ity characteristics and are not suitable for
high speeds or there leva nt driving
dynamics.
RThe tires wear une venly and could, there‐
fo re , af fect thero adwor thiness of the
ve hicle.
RABS, ESP®and cruise contro l operation
are restricted.
This can jeopardize road saf ety.
#Only use tire types that ha vebeen
appr ovedfo rth e maximum road speed
set and theve hicle.
Ve hicles with AMG ce ramic high-perf orm‐
ance compound braking sy stem:
* NO
TEDama getothe ceramic brake disk
when changing a wheel
Mercedes -AMG vehicles with ce ramic
brake dis ks:during remo val and reposition‐
ing of the wheel, the wheel rim may strike
th e ceramic brake disk and damage it.
#Ta ke particular care.
#Ask ano ther person for assi stance or
use a second cen tering pin.
#When changing the wheel, avoidexe rting any
fo rc e on the brake discs.
This can lead toimpaired com fort during
braking.
