Useful information
i This Owner's Manual describes all mod-
els, series and optional equipment for your
vehicle that were available at the time of
going to press. Country-specific differen-
ces are possible. Note that your vehicle
may not be fitted with all features descri-
bed. This is also the case for systems and
functions relevant to safety.
i Read the information on qualified special-

WARNING
Observe the settings recommended on the
following pages. The windows could other-
wise mist up. This may preven tyou from
observing the traffic conditions, thereby caus-
ing an accident.
THERMATIC automatic climate control regu-
lates the temperature and the humidity in the
vehicle interior and filters undesirable sub-
stances from the air.
THERMATIC automatic climate control is only
operational when the engine is running. Opti-
mum operation is only achieved if you drive
with the side windows and sliding sunroof
closed.
The climatic comfor tdeteriorates whilst the
sliding sunroof is open. The automatic climate
control cannot maintain the set temperature
with the sliding sunroof open. You have to
adjust the climate control manually.
i The residual heat function can only be
activated or deactivated with the ignition
switched off.

Ventilate the vehicle for a brief period
during warm weather, e.g. using the con-
venience opening feature (Y page 78). This
will speed up the cooling process and the
desired vehicle interior temperature will be
reached more quickly.
i The integrated filter can filter out most
particles of dust and completely filters out
pollen. Aclogged filter reduces the amount
of air supplied to the vehicle interior .For
this reason, you should always observe the
interval for replacing the filter, which is
specified in the Service Booklet .As it
depends on environmental conditions, e.g.
heavy air pollution, the interval may be
shorter than stated in the Service Booklet. 124
Overview of climate control systemsClimate control

R
Chec kthat items of luggage and loads are
stowed safely and are well secured
(Y page 271).
R To avoid damaging the vehicle, make sure
there is always sufficient ground clearance.
R Always keep the engine running and in gear
when driving on a downhill gradient.
R Always keep the engine running and in gear
when driving on a slope.
R Drive slowly and evenly, if necessary at
walking pace.
R Ensure that the wheels are in contact with
the ground at all times.
R Drive with extreme care on unknown off-
road routes where visibility is poor. For
safety reasons, get out of the vehicle first
and survey the off-road route.
R Check the depth of water before fording
rivers and streams.
R When fording, do not stop and do not
switch off the engine.
R Look out for obstacles such as rocks, holes,
tree stumps and furrows.
R Always keep the doors, the rear door or
tailgate (G-Class Cabriolet), the side win-
dows and the sliding sunroof closed while
the vehicle is in motion.
R Switch off cruise control and variable
SPEEDTRONIC.
R Do not stray from marked routes or paths.
R Adapt your speed to the terrain. The
rougher, steeper or more ruts on the ter-
rain, the slower your speed should be.
R Drive slowly and at a constant speed
through the water. Ensure that a bow wave
does not form as you drive.
R On sand, drive quickly to overcome the roll-
ing resistance. Otherwise, the vehicle could
dig itself into the sand.
R Do not jump with the vehicle as this will
interrupt the vehicle's propulsion. R
Avoid high engine speeds. Drive at appro-
priate engine speeds.
R Always check the vehicle for damage after
off-road driving.
i Information about retrofitting special all-
terrain tyres is available from any qualified
specialist workshop.
i Do not use the HOLD function when driv-
ing off-road, on steep uphill or downhill gra-
dients or on slippery or loose surfaces. The
HOLD function cannot hold the vehicle on
such surfaces.
Checklist before driving off-road !
If the engine oil warning lamp lights up
during the journey, stop the vehicle in a
safe place as soon as is possible. Check the
engine oil level. The warning given by the
engine oil warning light must not be
ignored. Continuing your journey when the
symbol is shown may result in engine dam-
age.
X Engine oil level: check the engine oil and
top it up if necessary.
Only then does the engine receive enough
oil when the vehicle is standing on a steep
incline.
X G3 50 BlueTEC: have the AdBlue ®
level
checked at a qualified specialist workshop
(Y page 160).
X Tyre-change tool kit: check that the jack
is working and make sure you have the
wheelbrace, a robust tow cable and a fold-
ing spade in the vehicle.
X Wheels and tyres: check the tyre tread
depth and tyre pressure.
X Check for damage and remove any foreign
objects, e.g. small stones, from the
wheels/tyres.
X Replace any missing valve caps.
X Replace dented or damaged wheels.
X Carry a sound spare wheel. 170

Roof carrier
G
WARNING
An incorrectl ysecured roof carrier, ski rack or
load could become detached from the vehi-
cle. These objects may then be thrown around
and can injure you or others or cause an acci-
dent. Follow the roof carrier/ski rack manu-
facturer's installation instructions and special
instructions for use.
The roof load raises the vehicle's centre of
gravity, thereby affecting vehicle handling.
Always observe the maximum roof load (see
the "Technical data" section). Always adapt
your driving style to the prevailing road, traffic
and weather conditions and drive with partic-
ular care if the roof is laden.
! Mercedes-Benz recommends that you
only use roof carriers that have been tested
and approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
This helps to preven tdamage to the vehi-
cle.
Positio nthe load on the roof carrier in such
a way that the vehicle will not sustain dam-
age even when it is in motion.
Make sure that the sliding sunroof can be
fully raised, depending on the vehicle's
equipment.
X Follow the manufacturer’s installation
instructions when fitting the roof carrier. Features
Cup holders
Important safety notes G
WARNING
If you are transporting objects in the stowage
compartments, the stowage compartments
must remain closed while the vehicle is in
motion. Otherwise, vehicle occupants could
be injured by objects being thrown around if
you: R
brake sharply
R change direction suddenly
R are involved in an accident
Only use the cup holders for containers of a
suitable size and which have lids. The drinks
could otherwise spill.
Cup holders should not be used for hot drinks.
You may otherwise scald yourself.

Make sure that you remove any contain-
ers from the rear-compartment cup holders Features

after having cleaned the wheels with wheel
cleaner. Wheel cleaners could cause
increased corrosio
nofthe brake discs and
brake pads/linings. For this reason, you
should drive for a few minutes after clean-
ing. Braking heats the brake discs and the
brake pads/linings, thus drying them. The
vehicle can then be parked up. Care of the exterior
Automatic car wash G
WARNING
Braking efficiency is reduced after washing
the vehicle. This could cause an accident. For
this reason, following a car wash, drive with
particular care until the brakes are dry.
! Preferably use car washes with adjustable
high-pressure jets for pre-washing. This
corresponds with the specifications for
cabriolet programmes. In car washes that
use high water pressures, there is a risk
that a small amount of water may leak into
the vehicle.
! Cabriolet: do not treat the vehicle with
hot wax under any circumstances.
! Make sure that the automatic car wash is
suitable for the size of the vehicle. Fold in
the exterior mirrors before the vehicle is
washed. The exterior mirrors could other-
wise be damaged.
! Make sure that the automatic transmis-
sion is in position Nwhen washing your
vehicle in a tow-through car wash. The vehi-
cle could be damaged if the transmission is
in another position.
! Make sure that:
R the side windows and sliding sunroof are
closed completely.
R the blower for the ventilation/heating is
switched off (airflow control is turned to position
0/theÃandÁ buttons
are switched off).
R the windscreen wiper switch is at posi-
tion 0.
The vehicle could otherwise be damaged.
You can wash the vehicle in an automatic car
wash from the very start.
Wash off excess dirt before cleaning the vehi-
cle in an automatic car wash.
After using an automatic car wash, wipe off
wax from the windscreen and the wiper
blades. This will prevent smears and reduce
wiping noises caused by residue on the wind-
screen.
High-pressure cleaning equipment G
WARNING
Do not use high-pressure cleaners with circu-
lar-jet nozzles (dirt grinders) to clean your
vehicle, in particular the tyres. You could oth-
erwise damage the tyres and cause an acci-
dent.
! Always maintain a distance of at least
30 cm between the vehicle and the high-
pressure cleaner nozzle. Information about
the correct distance is available from the
equipment manufacturer.
Move the high-pressure cleaner nozzle
around when cleaning your vehicle.
Do not aim directly at any of the following:
R tyres
R door gaps, roof gaps, joints etc.
R soft top (Cabriolet)
R electrical components
R battery
R connectors
R lights
R seals
R trim elements
R ventilation slots
Damaged seals or electrical components
can lead to leaks or failures. 296

may invalidate the vehicle's general operating
permit.
This is the case:
R if they cause a change of the vehicle type
from that for which the vehicle's general
operating permit was granted
R if other road users could be endangered
R if the emission or noise levels are adversely
affected
Always specify the vehicle identification num-
ber (VIN) (Y page 340) and the engine num-
ber (Y page 341) when ordering genuine
Mercedes-Benz parts. Vehicle electronics
Tampering with the engine electron-
ics G
WARNING
Always have work on the engine electronics
and related components carried out at a quali-
fied specialist workshop .Otherwise, the vehi-
cle's operating safety could be affected.
! Only have work carried ou tonthe engine
electronics and its associated parts, such
as control units, sensors and connector
leads, at a qualified specialist workshop.
Vehicle components may otherwise wear
more quickly and the vehicle's operating
permit may be invalidated. Retrofitting of two-way radios and
mobile phones (RF transmitters) G
WARNING
Incorrect retrofitting of RF transmitters can
cause the vehicle electronicst o malfunction.
The vehicle's operating safety and thus your
own safety are impaired.
Have aftermarket radio frequency transmit-
ting equipment installed at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop. G
WARNING
Incorrect retrofitting of RF transmitters can
lead to increased electromagnetic radiation in
the vehicle interior. Using an exterior aerial
takes into account current scientific discus-
sions relating to the possible health hazards
that may result from electromagnetic fields.
Have aftermarket radio frequency transmit-
ting equipment installed at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop.
! The operating permit may be invalidated
if the instructions for installation and use of
RF transmitters are not observed.
In particular, the following conditions must
be complied with:
R only approved wavebands may be used.
R the maximum permissible output in
these wavebands must be complied with.
R the approved aerial positions must be
complied with. Approved aerial positions

Front roof area
; Rear wing
i When fitting an aerial on the front roof
area of vehicles with a sliding sunroof,
observe the sweeping range of the roof.
On the rear wing, it is recommended to
position the aerial on the side of the vehicle
that faces the centre of the road.
