Problems with the SmartKey
Problem Possible causes/consequences and

You cannot lock or
unlock the vehicle
using the SmartKey. The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.

Try again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the
driver's door handle from close range and press the 000Dor
000C button.
If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 81) and replace it if
necessary (Y page 81).
X Lock (Y page 86) or unlock (Y page 87) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. The SmartKey is faulty.
X

X Have the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop. You can no longer lock
or unlock the vehicle
using KEYLESS-GO. There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
X Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the 000Dor000C button. There is a malfunction with KEYLESS-GO.
X Lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the 000Dor000C button.
X Have KEYLESS-GO checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
If this does not work:
X Check the SmartKey battery (Y page 81) and replace it if
necessary (Y page 81).
X Lock (Y page 86) or unlock (Y page 87) the vehicle using
the mechanical key. You have lost a
SmartKey. X
Have the SmartKey deactivated at a qualified specialist
workshop.
X Report the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.

started using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey is in
the vehicle. Ad

If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
R open the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users.
R get out and disrupt traffic.
R operate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they:
R release the parking brake.
R shift the automatic transmission out of
parking position P.
R starting the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children. G
WARNING
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the ignition lock. Always take
the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, even if they are secured in a child
restraint system, and do not give them access
to an unlocked vehicle. Achild's unsupervised
access to a vehicle could result in an accident
and/or serious personal injury. They could:
R injure themselves on vehicle parts
R be seriously or fatally injured by extreme
heat or cold
R injure themselves or have an accident with
vehicle equipment that may still be in
operation even after the SmartKey has
been removed from the ignition, such as the
seat adjustment, steering wheel
adjustment or memory function.
If children open a door, they could cause
severe or even fatal injury to other persons; if
they get out of the vehicle, they could injure 84

themselves when doing so or be seriously or
eve nfatally injured by any passing traffic.
Do not expose the child restraint system to
direct sunlight .The child restraint system's
metal parts, for example, could become very
hot, and a child could be burned on these
parts. G
WARNING

passenger compartment or cargo
compartmentu nless they are firmly secured
in place.
Unsecured or improperly positioned cargo
increases a child's risk of injury in the event
of
R strong braking maneuvers
R sudden changes of direction
R an accident Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
eve nifith as been locked. You can only open
the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they
are no tsecured by the child-proof locks
(Y page 65).
If the vehicle has been locked with the
SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, opening a
door from the inside will trigger the anti-theft
alarm system. Switch off the alarm
(Y page 76). X
Front door: pull door handle 0003.
If the door is locked, locking knob 0002pops
up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened.
X Rear door: pull up locking knob 0002on the
relevant rear door.
The rear door is unlocked and can be
opened. Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. The buttons are located on
both fron tdoors. 0002
To unlock
0003 To lock
X To unlock: press button 0002.
X To lock: press button 0003.
If the front-passenger door is closed, the
vehicle locks.
Meanwhile, the fuel filler flap will not be
locked or unlocked.
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the inside if the vehicle has been locked with
the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO.
You can open a front door from inside the
vehicle even if it has been locked. Doors

compartment. You could otherwise lock
yourself out.
You can:
R close the tailgate manually from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from inside
R limit the opening angle of the tailgate
R unlock the tailgate from inside with the
emergency release Opening/closing from outside

WARNING
To prevent possible personal injury, always
keep hands and fingers away from the cargo
compartmento pening when closing the
tailgate. Be especially careful when small
children are around. X
Pull the tailgate down using recess 0002.
X Allow the tailgate to drop into the lock.
X Lock the vehicle if necessary with
the 000C button on the SmartKey or with
KEYLESS-GO.
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not

Opening/closing automatically from
outside
Important safety notes G
WARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process .There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
R press the 0004button on the SmartKey.
R press the remote operating switch on the
driver's door.
R press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
R pull the handle on the tailgate. G
WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate
is open when the engine is running,
particularly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust
fumes could enter the passenger
compartment. There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the
tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate open.
! The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

i The tailgate is equipped with an
automatic reversing feature. If an object
blocks or restricts the tailgate during the
closing process, the tailgate opens again
automatically. Opening the tailgate automatically You can open the tailgate automatically with
the SmartKey or the handle in the tailgate.
X
Press and hold the 0004button on the
SmartKey until the tailgate opens.
or
X If the tailgate is unlocked, pull the handle
and let it go again immediately.

closing area during the closing process. There

Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.

R press the 0004button on the SmartKey.
R press the remote operating switch on the
driver's door.
R press the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.

simultaneously close and lock the tailgate.

If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected outside
the vehicle, the tailgate closes and locks.
All the doors must be shut and the
SmartKey located in the vicinity of the
tailgate.
i The tailgate cannot be opened and closed
with the SmartKey if there is a SmartKey in
the ignition.
If the tailgate touches an object while
closing, the closing procedure is
interrupted and the tailgate reopens.
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock. Opening/closing automatically from

driver's seat when the vehicle is stationary
and unlocked.90

Observe the complete closing procedure
when the convenience closing feature is
operating. Make sure that no body parts are
in close proximity during the closing
procedure.
When you loc kthe vehicle, you can
simultaneously:
R close the side windows
R close the hinged side windows
R close the sliding sunroof or the panorama
roof with power tilt/sliding panel
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel, you can then close the
roller sunblinds.
Proceed as follows if someone is trapped:
R Release the 000Cbutton to interrupt the
closing procedure.
R Press and hold the 000Dbutton to open.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO:
R Release the sensor surfaces on the exterior
door handle to interrupt the closing
procedure.
R To open, pull the same door handle
immediately and hold it firmly. The door
windows and the sliding sunroof will open
for as long as the door handle is held but
the door is not opened.

Using the SmartKey The SmartKey must be close to the driver's
door handle.
X
Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's
door handle.
X Press and hold the 000Cbutton until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof or the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel are fully closed.
X Make sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel:
X Press and hold the 000Cbutton again until
the roller sunblinds of the panorama roof
with power tilt/sliding panel close.
X To interrupt convenience closing:
release the 000Cbutton.
Using KEYLESS-GO The KEYLESS-GO key must be outside the
vehicle. All the doors must be closed.
X
Touch recessed sensor surface 0002on the
door handle until the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or the panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are fully closed.
i Make sure you only touch recessed
sensor surface 0002.
X Make sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel:
X Touch recessed sensor surface 0002on the
door handle again until the roller sunblinds
of the panorama roof with power tilt/

cannot be switched on. The on-board voltage is too low because too many electrical
consumers are switched on.

Switch off electrical consumers that you do not need, such as
the rear window defroster or interior lighting. EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature
Important safety notes G
WARNING
When the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature adjusts
the steering wheel, you and other vehicle
occupants –particularly childre n–could
become trapped. There is a risk of injury.
While the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature is
making adjustments, make sure that no one
has any body parts in the sweep of the
steering wheel.
If somebody becomes trapped:
R press one of the memory function position
buttons, or
R move the switch for steering wheel
adjustmen tinthe opposite direction to that
in which the steering wheel is moving.
The adjustment process is stopped. G
WARNING
If children activate the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT
feature, they can become trapped,
particularly when unattended. There is a risk
of injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle. G
WARNING
If you drive off while the EASY-ENTRY/EXIT
feature is making adjustments, you could lose
control of the vehicle. There is a risk of an
accident. Always wait until the adjustment process is
complete before driving off.
The EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature makes getting
in and out of your vehicle easier.
You can activate and deactivate the EASY-
ENTRY/EXIT feature in the on-board
computer (Y page 281).

When you close the driver's door with the

Wear suitable footwear to ensure correct
usage of the pedals.

WARNING
If you switch off the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect,
for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect .You will require considerably
more effort to steer and brake. There is a risk
of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving. G
WARNING
If the parking brake has not been fully
released when driving, the parking brake can:
R overheat and cause a fire
R lose its hold function.
There is a risk of fire and an accident .Release
the parking brake fully before driving off.
! Warm up the engine quickly. Do not use
the engine's full performance until it has
reached operating temperature.
Only shift the automatic transmission to
the desired drive position when the vehicle
is stationary.
Where possible, avoid spinning the drive
wheels when pulling away on slippery
roads. You could otherwise damage the
drive train.
! AMG vehicles: at low engine oil
temperatures below 68 ‡(+20 †), the
maximu mengine speed is restricted in
order to protect the engine .To protec tthe
engine and maintain smooth engine
operation, avoid driving at full throttle when
the engine is cold. Key positions

To remove the SmartKey
0004 Power supply for some consumers, such
as the windshield wipers
0005 Ignition (power supply for all consumers)
and drive position
0006 To start the engine
i The SmartKey can be turned in the
ignition lock even if it is not the correct
SmartKey for the vehicle. The ignition is not
switched on. The engine cannot be started.
KEYLESS-GO General notes
R
Do not keep the KEYLESS-GO key:
- with electronic devices, e.g. a mobile
phone or another SmartKey
- with metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal
foil
- inside metallic objects, e.g. a metal case
This can impair the functionality of the
KEYLESS-GO key.
Do not keep the KEYLESS-GO key in the
temperature-controlled cup holder
(Y page 345). Otherwise, the KEYLESS-GO
key will not be recognized.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO are equipped with
aS martKey featuring an integrated KEYLESS-
GO function and a detachable Start/Stop
