XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 82).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key clockwise as far
as it will go to positionG.
XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
XMake sure that the doors and the tailgate
are locked.
XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
iIf you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not armed.
Cargo compartment
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. If the tailgate
is open when the engine is running,
particularly if the vehicle is moving, exhaust
fumes could enter the passenger
compartment. There is a risk of poisoning.
Turn off the engine before opening the
tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate open.
GWARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury,
particularly in the event of sudden braking or
a sudden change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
!The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Ypage 340).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the cargo
compartment. You could otherwise lock
yourself out.
You can:
Rclose the tailgate manually from outside
Ropen and close the tailgate automatically
from outside
Ropen and close the tailgate automatically
from inside
Rlimit the opening angle of the tailgate
Runlock the tailgate from inside with the
emergency release
Tailgate reversing feature
On vehicles with tailgate remote closing
feature, the tailgate is equipped with
automatic obstacle recognition with a
reversing feature. If a solid object blocks or
restricts the tailgate when automatically

opening or closing, this procedure is stopped.
If the tailgate is stopped during the closing
procedure, it will open again automatically.
The automatic obstacle recognition with
reversing function is only an aid. It is not a
substitute for your attentiveness when
opening and closing the tailgate.
GWARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small
fingers
Rover the last 1/3 in (8 mm) of the closing
movement
This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these
situations. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey, or
Rpress the remote operating switch on the
driver’s door, or
Rpress the closing or locking button on the
tailgate, or
Rpull the handle on the tailgate

XPull handleCand release it.
The tailgate opens automatically.
Closing
XPull the tailgate down using recessC.
XAllow the tailgate to drop into the lock.
XLock the vehicle if necessary with
the7button on the SmartKey or with
KEYLESS-GO.
iIf a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock.

outside

Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.

Opening the tailgate automatically
You can open the tailgate automatically with
the SmartKey or the handle in the tailgate.
XPress and hold theTbutton on the
SmartKey until the tailgate opens.
or
XIf the tailgate is unlocked, pull the handle
and let it go again immediately.
Closing the tailgate automatically
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process. There
is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
Rpress theTbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpress the remote operating switch on the
driver's door.
Rpress the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
Rpull the handle on the tailgate.
Closing and locking button (example: vehicle withKEYLESS-GO)
XTo close:press closing buttonCon the
tailgate.
or
XPress and hold theTbutton on the
SmartKey until the tailgate closes.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: you can
simultaneously close and lock the tailgate.
XPress locking buttonDon the tailgate.
If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected outside
the vehicle, the tailgate closes and locks.
All the doors must be shut and the
SmartKey located in the vicinity of the
tailgate.
iThe tailgate cannot be opened and closed
with the SmartKey if there is a SmartKey in
the ignition.
If the tailgate touches an object while
closing, the closing procedure is
interrupted and the tailgate reopens.
iIf a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
cargo compartment, the tailgate will not
lock.

You can open and close the tailgate from the
driver's seat when the vehicle is stationary
and unlocked.
XTo open:pull remote operating switchC
for the tailgate until the tailgate opens.
XTo close:turn the SmartKey to position1
or2in the ignition lock.
XPress remote operating switch for
tailgateCuntil the tailgate is closed.
Limiting the opening angle of the
tailgate
Important safety notes
!Make sure there is sufficient clearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angle
outside.
Activating
You can limit the opening angle of the
tailgate. This is possible in the top half of its
opening range, up to approximately 4 in
(10 cm) before the stop.
This could be useful, for example, if there is
insufficient space above the tailgate.
XTo open the tailgate:pull the handle on
the tailgate.
XTo stop the opening procedure at the
desired position:press the closing button

(Ypage 90) in the tailgate or pull the handle
on the outside of the tailgate again.
XTo store the position:press and hold the
closing button in the tailgate until you hear
a short tone.
The opening angle limiter is activated. The
tailgate will now stop in the stored position
when opening.
Deactivating
XPress and hold the closing button
(Ypage 90) in the tailgate until you hear
two short tones.
Tailgate emergency release
Important safety notes
!The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opened. Therefore, make sure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.

If the tailgate can no longer be opened from
outside the vehicle, use the emergency
release on the inside of the tailgate.

the arrow and open the tailgate.

Side windows
Important safety notes
GWARNING
While opening the side windows, body parts
could become trapped between the side
window and the door frame as the side
window moves. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody touches the side
window during the opening procedure. If
somebody becomes trapped, release the
switch or pull the switch to close the side
window again.
GWARNING
While opening the side windows, body parts
in the closing area could become trapped.
There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the closing procedure. If
somebody becomes trapped, release the
switch or press the switch to open the side
window again.
GWARNING
If children operate the side windows they
could become trapped, particularly if they are
left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
Activate the override feature for the rear side
windows. When leaving the vehicle, always
take the SmartKey with you and lock the
vehicle. Never leave children unsupervised in
the vehicle.

Side window reversing feature
The side windows are equipped with an
automatic reversing feature. If a solid object
blocks or restricts a side window during the
closing process, the side window opens again
automatically. However, the automatic
reversing feature is only an aid and does not
relieve you of the responsibility of paying
attention when closing a side window.
GWARNING
The reversing feature does not react:
Rto soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small

Rover the last 1/6 in(4 mm) of the closing
movement
Rduring resetting
Rwhen closing the side window again

This means that the reversing feature cannot
prevent someone being trapped in these

proximity during the closing procedure. If
someone becomes trapped, press the switch
to open the side window again.
Opening and closing the side
windows
The switches for all side windows are located
on the driver's door. There is also a switch on
each door for the corresponding side window.
The switches on the driver's door take
precedence.

XMake sure that the SmartKey is in position
1or2in the ignition lock.
XTo open fully:press switchCand release.
XTo close fully:pull switchCand release.
XTo stop the closing procedure:press
switchCagain.
Both hinged side windows open fully.
iIf the hinged side windows are blocked
when closing, the closing procedure is
interrupted and the hinged side windows
open again fully.
Convenience opening
General notes
You can ventilate the vehicle before you start
driving. To do this, the SmartKey is used to
carry out the following functions
simultaneously:
Runlock the vehicle
Ropen the side windows
Ropen the hinged side windows
Ropen the sliding sunroof or the panorama
roof with power tilt/sliding panel and the
roller sunblinds
Rswitch on the seat ventilation for the
driver's seat
iThe convenience opening feature can
only be operated using the SmartKey. The
SmartKey must be close to the vehicle. For
vehicles without KEYLESS-GO, the
SmartKey must be near the driver's door
handle.
Convenience opening
XVehicles without KEYLESS-GO:point the
tip of the SmartKey at the door handle on
the driver's door.
XPress and hold the6button until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof or the
panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel are in the desired position.
If the roller sunblinds of the panorama roof
with power tilt/sliding panel are closed, the
roller sunblinds are opened first.
XPress and hold the6button again until
the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel is in the desired position.
XTo interrupt convenience opening:
release the6button.
Convenience closing feature
Important safety notes
GWARNING
When the convenience closing feature is
operating, parts of the body could become
trapped in the closing area of the side window
and the sliding sunroof. There is a risk of
injury.
Observe the complete closing procedure
when the convenience closing feature is
operating. Make sure that no body parts are
in close proximity during the closing
procedure.
When you lock the vehicle, you can
simultaneously:
Rclose the side windows
Rclose the hinged side windows
Rclose the sliding sunroof or the panorama
roof with power tilt/sliding panel
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel, you can then close the
roller sunblinds.

Proceed as follows if someone is trapped:
RRelease the7button to interrupt the
closing procedure.
RPress and hold the6button to open.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO:
RRelease the sensor surfaces on the exterior
door handle to interrupt the closing
procedure.
RTo open, pull the same door handle
immediately and hold it firmly. The door
windows and the sliding sunroof will open
for as long as the door handle is held but
the door is not opened.

Using the SmartKey
The SmartKey must be in the vicinity of the
vehicle, on vehicles without KEYLESS-GO the
SmartKey must be near the door handle.
XVehicles without KEYLESS-GO:point the
tip of the SmartKey at the door handle on
the driver's door.
XPress and hold the7button until the
side windows and the sliding sunroof or the
panorama roof with power tilt/sliding
panel are fully closed.
XMake sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel:
XPress and hold the7button again until
the roller sunblinds of the panorama roof
with power tilt/sliding panel close.
XTo interrupt convenience closing:
release the7button.
Using KEYLESS-GO
The KEYLESS-GO key must be outside the
vehicle. All the doors must be closed.
XTouch recessed sensor surfaceCon the
door handle until the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or the panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are fully closed.
iMake sure you only touch recessed
sensor surfaceC.
XMake sure that all the side windows and the
sliding sunroof or panorama roof with
power tilt/sliding panel are closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with power
tilt/sliding panel:
XTouch recessed sensor surfaceCon the
door handle again until the roller sunblinds
of the panorama roof with power tilt/
sliding panel close.
XTo interrupt convenience closing:
release recessed sensor surfaceCon the
door handle.
Resetting the side windows
If a side window can no longer be closed fully,
you must reset it.
XClose all the doors.
XTurn the SmartKey to position1or2in the
ignition lock.

XPull the corresponding switch on the door
control panel until the side window is
completely closed. (Ypage 94)
XHold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
XImmediately pull the corresponding switch
on the door control panel until the side
window is completely closed (Ypage 94).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
XIf the corresponding side window remains
closed after the button has been released,
the side window has been reset correctly.
If this is not the case, repeat the steps
above again.

Problems with the side windows
GWARNING
If you close a side window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side window
closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of the
body could be trapped in the closing area in the process. This poses an increased risk of injury
or even fatal injury.
Make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. To stop the closing process, release
the switch or push the switch again to reopen the side window.

XImmediately after the window blocks, pull the corresponding
switch again until the side window has closed.
The side window is closed without the anti-entrapment feature.
Sliding sunroof
Important safety notes
Your vehicle may be equipped with a sliding
sunroof or a panorama roof with power tilt/
sliding panel. In this section, the term "sliding
sunroof" refers to both types of sliding
sunroof.
GWARNING
While opening and closing the sliding sunroof,
body parts in close proximity could become
trapped. There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximity during the opening and closing
procedures.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rrelease the switch immediately, or
Rduring automatic operation, push the
switch briefly in any direction
The opening or closing procedure will be
stopped.
GWARNING
If children operate the sliding sunroof they
could become trapped, particularly if they are
left unsupervised. There is a risk of injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
