Useful information
iThis Operator's Manual describes all
models and all standard and optional
equipment of your vehicle available at the
time of publication of the Operator's
Manual. Country-specific differences are
possible. Please note that your vehicle may
not be equipped with all features
described. This also applies to safety-
related systems and functions.

SmartKey
Important safety notes
GWARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
Ropen the doors, thus endangering other
people or road users.
Rget out and disrupt traffic.
Roperate the vehicle's equipment.
Additionally, children could set the vehicle in
motion if, for example, they:
Rrelease the parking brake.
Rshifting the automatic transmission out of
park positionP
RStart the engine.
There is a risk of an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.
GWARNING
If persons, particularly children are subjected
to prolonged exposure to extreme heat or
cold, there is a risk of injury, possibly even
fatal. Never leave children unattended in the
vehicle.
GWARNING
If you attach heavy or large objects to the
SmartKey, the SmartKey could be
unintentionally turned in the ignition lock. This
could cause the engine to be switched off.
There is a risk of an accident.
Do not attach any heavy or large objects to
the SmartKey. Remove any bulky key rings
before inserting the SmartKey into the
ignition lock.
!Keep the SmartKey away from strong
magnetic fields. Otherwise, the remote
control function could be affected.
Strong magnetic fields can occur in the
vicinity of powerful electrical installations.
Do not keep the SmartKey:
Rwith electronic devices, e.g. a mobile
phone or another SmartKey
Rwith metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal
foil
Rinside metallic objects, e.g. a metal case
This can affect the functionality of the
SmartKey.
Do not keep the KEYLESS-GO key in the
temperature-controlled cup holder.
Otherwise, the KEYLESS-GO key will not be
recognized.
SmartKey functions
C7To lock the vehicle
DTTo open/close the tailgate

XTo unlock centrally:press button

seconds until the battery check lamp
flashes twice (Ypage 83).
iIf the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the
vehicle, pressing the7or6button:
Rlocks or
Runlocks the vehicle
The SmartKey now functions as follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door:press the
6button once.
XTo unlock centrally:press the6
button twice.
XTo lock centrally:press the7button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as
follows:
XTo unlock the driver's door:touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door.
XTo unlock centrally:touch the inner
surface of the door handle on the front-
passenger door or the rear door.
XTo lock centrally:touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles
(Ypage 81).
XTo restore the factory settings:press
and hold down the6and7buttons
simultaneously for approximately six
seconds until the battery check lamp
flashes twice (Ypage 83).
Mechanical key
General notes
If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the SmartKey, use the
mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 77).
There are several ways to turn off the alarm:
XTo deactivate the alarm with the
SmartKey:press the6or7button
on the SmartKey.
or
XInsert the SmartKey into the ignition lock.
or
XTo deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-
GO:press the Start/Stop button in the
ignition lock. The SmartKey must be in the
vehicle.
or
XLock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey must be outside the
vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the mechanical
key, the fuel filler flap will not be unlocked
automatically.
XTo unlock the fuel filler flap:insert the
SmartKey into the ignition lock.
Removing the mechanical key
XPush release catchCin the direction of
the arrow and at the same time remove
mechanical keyDfrom the SmartKey.

Inserting the mechanical key
XPush mechanical keyDcompletely into
the SmartKey until it engages and release
catchCis back in its basic position.
SmartKey battery
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive
substances. If batteries are swallowed, it can
result in severe health problems. There is a
risk of fatal injury.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If
a battery is swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have
the batteries replaced at a qualified specialist
workshop.
The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may require special handling
and regard for the environment. National
guidelines must be observed during disposal.

Checking the battery
XPress the7or6button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lampClights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lampCdoes not light up briefly.
XChange the battery (Ypage 83).
iIf the SmartKey battery is checked within
the signal reception range of the vehicle,
pressing the7or6button:
Rlocks or
Runlocks the vehicle
iYou can get a battery at any qualified
specialist workshop.
Replacing the battery
You require a CR 2025 3 V cell battery.
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 82).
XPress mechanical keyDinto the opening
in the SmartKey in the direction of the
arrow until battery compartment coverC
opens. Do not hold battery compartment
coverCclosed while doing so.
XRemove battery compartment coverC.

Problems with the SmartKey

You cannot lock or
unlock the vehicle
using the SmartKey.
The SmartKey battery is discharged or nearly discharged.
XTry again to lock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control
function of the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the
driver's door handle from close range and press the6or
7button.
If this does not work:
XCheck the SmartKey battery (Ypage 83) and replace it if
necessary (Ypage 83).
XLock (Ypage 88) or unlock (Ypage 88) the vehicle using
the mechanical key.
The SmartKey is faulty.
XLock (Ypage 88) or unlock (Ypage 88) the vehicle using
the mechanical key.
XHave the SmartKey checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
You can no longer lock
or unlock the vehicle
using KEYLESS-GO.
There is interference from a powerful source of radio waves.
XLock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the6or7button.
There is a malfunction with KEYLESS-GO.
XLock/unlock the vehicle using the remote control function of
the SmartKey. Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door
handle from close range and press the6or7button.
XHave KEYLESS-GO checked at a qualified specialist workshop.
If this does not work:
XCheck the SmartKey battery (Ypage 83) and replace it if
necessary (Ypage 83).
XLock (Ypage 88) or unlock (Ypage 88) the vehicle using
the mechanical key.
You have lost a
SmartKey.
XHave the SmartKey deactivated at a qualified specialist
workshop.
XReport the loss immediately to the vehicle insurers.
XIf necessary, have the locks changed as well.
You have lost the

lighting, and try to start the engine again.

XConsult a qualified specialist workshop.
The engine cannot be
started using KEYLESS-
GO. The SmartKey is in
the vehicle.
A door is open. Therefore, the SmartKey cannot be detected as
easily.
XClose the door and try to start the vehicle again.

If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, they could slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is a risk of injury,
particularly in the event of sudden braking or
a sudden change in direction.
Always store objects so that they cannot be
flung around. Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tipping before the
journey.
You should preferably place luggage or loads
in the cargo compartment. Observe the
loading guidelines (Ypage 340).

Unlocking and opening doors from
the inside
You can open a door from inside the vehicle
even if it has been locked. You can only open
the rear doors from inside the vehicle if they
are not secured by the child-proof locks
(Ypage 66).
If the vehicle has been locked with the
SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO, opening a
door from the inside will trigger the anti-theft
alarm system. Switch off the alarm
(Ypage 77).
XFront door:pull door handleD.
If the door is locked, locking knobCpops
up. The door is unlocked and can be
opened.
XRear door:pull up locking knobCon the
relevant rear door.
The rear door is unlocked and can be
opened.
Centrally locking and unlocking the
vehicle from the inside
You can centrally lock or unlock the vehicle
from the inside. The buttons are located on
both front doors.
CTo unlock
DTo lock
XTo unlock:press buttonC.
XTo lock:press buttonD.
If the front-passenger door is closed, the
vehicle locks.
Meanwhile, the fuel filler flap will not be
locked or unlocked.
You cannot unlock the vehicle centrally from
the inside if the vehicle has been locked with
the SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO.
You can open a front door from inside the
vehicle even if it has been locked.
If the vehicle has been locked using the
locking button for the central locking, or has
been locked automatically, and a door is
opened from the inside:
Rthe vehicle will be fully unlocked if it had
previously been fully unlocked
Ronly the door which has been opened form
the inside is unlocked if only the driver's
door had been previously unlocked

Automatic locking feature
XTo disarm:press and hold buttonCfor
about five seconds until a tone sounds.
XTo arm:press and hold buttonDfor about
five seconds until a tone sounds.
iIf you press one of the two buttons and
do not hear a tone, the relevant setting has
already been selected.
The vehicle is locked automatically when the
ignition is switched on and the wheels are
turning.
You could therefore be locked out if:
Rthe vehicle is being pushed.
Rthe vehicle is being towed.
Rthe vehicle is on a roller dynamometer.
You can also switch the automatic locking
function on and off using the on-board
computer (Ypage 284).
Power closing
Power closing pulls the doors and trunk lid
into their locks automatically even if they are
only partly closed.
XTo power close a door:push the door into
the lock up to the first detent position.
Power closing will pull the door fully closed.
XTo power close the tailgate:lightly press
the tailgate downwards.
Power closing will pull the tailgate fully
closed.
Unlocking the driver's door
(mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
If you use the mechanical key to unlock and
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm
system will be triggered (Ypage 77).
XTake the mechanical key out of the
SmartKey (Ypage 82).
XInsert the mechanical key into the lock of
the driver's door as far as it will go.
XTurn the mechanical key counter-clockwise
to positionG.
The door is unlocked.
XTurn the mechanical key back and remove
it.
XInsert the mechanical key into the
SmartKey.
Locking the vehicle (mechanical key)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
SmartKey, use the mechanical key.
XOpen the driver's door.
XClose the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the tailgate.
XPress the locking button (Ypage 87).
XCheck whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs by hand, if necessary.
XClose the driver's door.
