Fu nction of ROAD SUR FACE SCAN
% This function is not available in all countries. The
ROAD SUR FACE SCAN function monitors the
ro ad in front of your vehicle using a multifunc‐
tion camera 1.ROAD SUR FACE SCAN de tects
une venness in thero ad sur face, e.g. bu mps,
before theve hicle drives overth em. Chassis
mo vements are reduced and driving comfort is
increased. RO
AD SUR FACE SCAN is automatically activated
if th efo llowing conditions are me t:
R Drive prog ram A (Comfort) or N
(CURVE) is selected.
R The vehicle is set tothe normal le vel.
R You are driving at a speed between 7 km/h
and 180 km/h.
Sy stem limits
RO AD SUR FACE SCAN can be impaired in the
fo llowing situations or can stop functioning:
R Ifth e car riag ew ay is insuf ficiently lit, e.g. at
night.
R In sno w,rain, fog, heavy spr ay, if there is
gl are, in direct sunlight or in greatlyvarying
light conditions.
R Ifth e windscreen in the area of multifunction
camera 1is dirty, mis ted up, damaged or
co vered.
R Ifth ero ad sur face has no optic stru cture or
re flects light.
R Ifth e dis tance totheve hicle in front is too

Fu nction of reco very mode &

When free driving mode is activated, the
ve hicle bounces up and down. Body parts
could become trapped if they are between
th eve hicle body and the tyres or underneath
th eve hicle. #
Make sure that nobody is under or in
th e immediate vicinity of theve hicle
when free driving mode is activated. *

moving up and down When free driving mode is activated,
the
ve hicle mo ves up and down. Vehicle parts
may be damaged if the underbody bottoms

Make sure that there is suf ficient
ground clearance when rocking free
mode is activated. Ro
cking free mode is a function of the suspen‐
sion which can assist the driver on loose sur fa‐
ces (e.g. sand, snow) when freeing a vehicle
which has become stuc k.
The vehicle body rock s in slo w,vertical motions
when reco very mode has been activated. This
te mp orarily puts the wheels under greater load,
which means they have inc reased traction and
th eve hicle is freed.

ual wheel control function has been activa‐
te d. Body parts could become trapped if they
are between theve hicle body and the tyres

impr ove alignment of the body when driving off-
ro ad.

Setting theve hicle le vel &
WARNING Risk of accident because

If yo u drive at a higher vehicle le vel,th e driv‐
ing characteristics may be impaired due to
th e higher vehicle centre of gravity.
The vehicle can drift outwards, forex ample,
when steering or cornering. #

WARNING Risk of entrapment from vehi‐

When lo wering theve hicle, other people
could become trapped if their limbs are
between theve hicle body and the tyres or
underneath theve hicle. #
Make sure no one is underneath the
ve hicle or in the immediate vicinity of
th e wheel ar ches when theve hicle is
being lo wered. &
WARNING Risk of becoming trapped

Ve hicles with AIRMATIC or le vel control:
when you unload luggage or lea vetheve hi‐
cle, theve hicle firs trises slightly and then
re turns tothe set le vel shortly af terw ards.
Yo u or an yone else in the vicinity of the
wheel ar ches or the underbody could thus
become trapped.
The vehicle can also be lo wered af ter being
loc ked. #
When leaving theve hicle, make sure
th at nobody is in the vicinity of the
wheel ar ches or the underbody. Re
quirements:
R The vehicle has been star ted.
R The vehicle is being driven no fasterthan

yo u are driving at speeds greaterth an
30 km/h, theve hicle lo wersto the normal
le ve l if the electrical connection has been
cor rectly es tablished.
R After selecting a dif fere nt drive program
using theDY NA MIC SELECT switch.
In this case, theve hicle is adjus tedto the height

Individual wheel control
Individual wheel control enables theve hicle le vel
to be set separately for each wheel. #
Select Individual wheel control. #
Set theve hicle le velfo rth e desired wheel.
% You can also use theto uch displ aytoset the
le ve lfo r two or more wheels at the same
time. #
Select Resettoset all wheels tothe default
setting.
Individual wheel control is automatically deacti‐
va ted in thefo llowing situations:
R you are tra velling fasterthan 15 km/h
R it is de tected that an object has hit the
underbody of theve hicle hard
R not all conditions are met %

rking Assist PARKTRONIC Fu
nction of Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONIC is an electronic
parking assi stance sy stem with ultrasound. It
monitors the area around your vehicle using six
sensors on the front bumper and six sensors on
th ere ar bumper. Parking Assist PARKTRONIC
sho wsyouth e dis tance between your vehicle
and a de tected obs tacle visually and audibly.
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONIC is on lyan aid. It is
not a substitute foryo ur attention tothe sur‐
ro undings. The responsibility for safe manoeu‐
vring and parking remains with you. Make sure
th at there are no persons, animals or objects in
th e manoeuvring area while manoeuvring and
parking in/exiting parking spaces.
In thest andard setting, an intermit tent wa rning
to ne sounds from a di stance of appr oximately
0.3 m toan obs tacle in front and appr oximately
1. 0 m toan obs tacle behind. A continuous warn‐ 264

imately 0.2 m. Using theWarn early all-round
setting in the multimedia sy stem, thewa rning

imately 1.0 m in front and 0.6 m on the sides
(/ page 269).

wa rning display is based on the dis tance tothe

The sensors must be free of dirt, ice and slush.
Otherwise, they may not function cor rectly.
Clean the sensors regularly, especially af ter driv‐
ing off-road, taking care not toscratch or dam‐
age them.
Ve hicles with trailer hitch: Parking Assist
PA RKTRONIC is deacti vatedfo rth ere ar zone
when you es tablish an elect rical connection

Ifth e problem persists, consult a qualified specialist workshop. Fu
nction of the passive side impact pr otec‐
tion
Pa ssive side impact pr otection is an additional
Pa rking Assist PARKTRONIC function which
wa rnsth e driver about obs tacles at the side of
th eve hicle. A warning is issued when obs tacles
are de tected between the front and rear de tec‐
tion range. In order for an object on the side to
be de tected, the sensors in the front and rear
bumper must firs t de tect the object while you
are driving past it. During
the parking procedure or manoeuvring,
objects are de tected as theve hicle drives past.
If yo usteer in the direction of a de tected obs ta‐
cle and there is a risk of a lateral collision, a
wa rning is issued. The segments on the sides
light up yellow or red, depending on the dis tance
