Useful information
This Operator's Manual describes all models as
well as standard and optional equipment of your
vehicle that were available at the time of going
to print.Country-specific variation sare possi-
ble. Note that your vehicle may not be equipped
with all of the described functions. This also
applies to system sand function srelevantt o

Breaking-in notes
Important safetyn otes
In certain drivingand drivingsafetysystems, the
sensors adjust automatically while acertain dis-
tance is being driven after the vehicle has been
delivered or after repairs. Full system effective- ness is not reached until the end of this teach-in
procedure.
New or replaced brake pads and brake discs
only reach their optimal brakin geffecta fter a
few hundred kilometers of driving. Until then,
compensat efor this by applying greater forcet o
the brake pedal.
The first 1000 miles (1500 km)
For the servicel ife and economy of your vehicle
it is crucial that you break in the engin ewith due
care.
RTherefore, protect the engin efor the first
1000m iles (1500k m) by drivingatv arying
vehicle and engin espeeds.
RAvoid overstraining the vehicle and high
engin espeeds during this period, e.g. driving
at full throttle. Do not exceed Øof the max-
imum speed for each gear.
RDo not change down agear manually in order
to brake.
RTry to avoid depressingt he accelerator pedal
beyond the point of resistance (kickdown).
After 1000m iles (1500km), you can increase
the engin espeed gradually and accelerate the
vehicle to full speed.
iYou should also observet hesenotes on
breaking-in if the engin eorparts of the drive
train on your vehicle have been replaced.

Flammable materials introduced through
environmental influence or by animals can

parts of the engin ethat heat up. There is arisk

Carry out regular checks to make sure that
ther eare no flammable foreign materials in

system.
GWARNING
If you switc hoff the ignition while driving,
safety-relevant function sare only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect, for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect. You will require considerably
more efforttos teer and brake. There is arisk
of an accident.

If the parkin gbrake has not been fully
released when driving, the parkin gbrake can:
Roverheat and cause afire

the parkin gbrake fully before drivingo ff.
!Warm up the enginequickly. Do not use the
engine's full performanc euntil it has reached
operatin gtemperature.
Only shift the automatic transmission to the
desired drive position when the vehicle is sta-
tionary.
Where possible, avoid spinning the drive
wheels when pulling away on slippery roads.
You could otherwise damage the drive train.

Operation
With the hel pofthe rada rsensor system ,Adap-
tive Brake Assist can detect obstacle sthath ave
been in the path of your vehicl efor an extended
perio doft ime.Adaptive Brake Assist does not
react to stationar yobstacles. If Adaptive Brake Assist detects
ariskofc ollision with avehicle
traveling in front or with astationar yobstacle,
the system calculate sthe braking forc eneces-
sary to avoidt hiscollision. If yo uapply the
brakes forcefully, Adaptive Brake Assist will
automaticall yincrease the braking forc etoa
level suitabl efor the traffic conditions.

In particular, the detection of obstacles can be
impaired in the case of:
Rdirt on the sensors or anything else covering
the sensors
Rfog, heavy rain or snow
Rnarrow vehicles, e.g. motorcycles or bicycles
Rvery wide lanes
Rnarrow lanes
Rvehicles not driving in the middle of their lane
Rbarriers or other road boundaries
Vehicles in the monitoring range are then not
indicated.

This device has been approved by the FCC as
a" Vehicular Rada rSystem". The radar sensor
is intended for use in an automotive radar
system only. Removal, tampering, or altering
of the device will void any warranties, and is
not permitted by the FCC. Do not tamper with,
alter, or use in any non-approved way.
Any unauthorized modification to this device
could void the user’s authority to operate the
equipment.
Monitoring range of the sensors
Blind Spot Assist monitors the area shown in the
diagramupt o118 in (3 m) behind and directly
next to your vehicle.
If the lanes are narrow, vehicles driving in the
lane beyond the lane next to your vehicle may be indicated, especially if the vehicles are not driv-
ing in the middle of their lane. This may be the
case if the vehicles are driving on the inner side
of their lane.
Due to the nature of the system:
Rwarnings may be issued in error when driving
close to crash barriers or similars olid lane
borders.
Rwarnings may be interrupted when driving
alongside long vehicles, for example trucks,
for aprolonged time
The two sensors for Blind Spot Assist are inte-
grated into the sides of the rear bumper. Make
sure that the bumper is free of dirt, ice or slush
in the vicinity of the sensors. The radar sensors
must not be covered, for example by rear-moun-
ted cycle racks or overhanging loads. Following
as evere impact or in the event of damage to the
bumper, have the function of the radar sensors
checked at aqualified specialist workshop.
Blind Spot Assist may otherwise not work prop-
erly.
Warning display
Blind Spot Assist is not active at speeds below
approximately 20 mph (30 km/h). Vehicles in
the monitoring range are then not indicated.
If av ehicle is detected within the monitoring
range of Blind Spot Assist at speeds above
approximately 20 mph (30 km/h), warning
lamp :lights up red in the exterior mirror on
the corresponding side. Warning lamp :
always lights up when avehicle enters the blind
spot monitoring range from behind or from the
side. When you overtake avehicle, the warning
only occurs if the difference in speed is less than
7m ph (11 km/h).
If you select reverse gear, Blind Spot Assist is
inactive.

Standard:the sensitivity with which the sys-
tem determines the attention level is set to
normal.
Sensitive: the sensitivity is set higher. The
driver is warned earlier.
When ATTENTION ASSIST is switched on and
the vehicle engine is running:
Ron vehicles without steering wheel buttons,
the À indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up
Ron vehicles with steering-wheel buttons, the
display shows the Àsymbol:
-in the status area
-in the Status Overviewof the Assist.menu (Ypage 183)
For vehicles with steering wheel buttons, if you
deactivate ATTENTION ASSIST, the system is
automatically re-activated when you start the
engine. The system sensitivity then corresponds to the last selection activated –standard or sen-
sitive.
If you switch off ATTENTION ASSIST in avehicle
without steering wheel buttons, the system
remains switched off even after you start the
engine. The status of the system after switching
on the engine always corresponds to the status
last selected.
Warning in the display
If the system detectst iredness or increasing
lapses in concentration, the warning Atten‐
tion Assist: TakeaBreak!orAttent.Asst: Take Break!is shown in the display.
An additional warning tone sounds.
XIf necessary, take abreak.
XConfirm the message by pressing the a
button on the steering wheel.
On long journeys, take regular breaks in good
time to allow yourself to rest. If you do not take
ab reak and ATTENTION ASSIST continues to
detect increasing lapses in concentration, you
will be warned again after 15 minutes at the
earliest. This will only happen if ATTEN-
TION ASSIST still detectst ypical indicators of
fatigue or increasing lapses in concentration.
PARKTRONIC
General notes
PARKTRONIC is an electronic parking aid. The
system is equipped with ultrasonic sensors in
the front and rear bumpers to monitor the area
around your vehicle. PARKTRONIC indicates vis-
uallya nd audibly the distance between your
vehicle and an object.
Your vehicle features two separate sound emit-
ters with different frequencies for the warning
tones. The warning ranges in front of and behind the vehicle are indicated by different warning
tones.
PARKTRONIC is activated automatically when
you:
Rturn the key to position 2in the ignition lock
Rrelease the parking brake and
Rmove the selector lever to D,Nor R
PARKTRONIC is deactivated at speeds above
11 mph (18 km/h). PARKTRONIC is reactivated
at speeds below 10 mph (16 km/h).
Important safety notes
PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It cannot replace
your own awareness of the immediate surround-
ings. You are responsible for safe maneuvering,
parking and pulling away.W hen maneuvering,
parking and pulling away,m ake sure that there
are no persons, animals or object sinthe maneu-
vering area.
!Pay particular attention to obstacles above
or below the sensors when parking, such as
flower pots or trailer towbars. PARKTRONIC
does not recognizes uch objectswhen they
are in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle.
You could damage the vehicle or objects.
PARKTRONIC can suffer interference from:
Rultrasonic sources such as atruck's
compressed-air brakes, an automatic car
wash or apneumatic drill
Rattachments to the vehicle, e.g. rear moun-
ted racks
Rnumber plates (vehicle license plates) that
are not affixed flat against the bumper
Rdirty or icy sensors
Remove adetachable trailer coupling if it is no
longer required. PARKTRONIC measures the
minimum detection range to an obstacle from
the bumper, not the ball coupling.

Active Parking Assist
General notes
Active Parking Assist is an electronic parking
aid. The system uses ultrasound sensors to
measure the road on both sides of the vehicle
and indicates suitable parking spaces. It can
then actively steer and brake the vehicle to help
you to park and exit the parking space.
Active Parking Assist includes the PARKTRONIC
parking aid which indicates visuallya nd audibly
the distance between your vehicle and an
object .Todot his, PARKTRONIC uses the ultra-
sonic sensors of the Active Parking Assist
(
Ypage 150).
Important safety notes
Active Parking Assist is only an aid. It is not a
substitute for your attention to the immediate
surroundings. You are responsible for safe maneuvering, parking and pulling away.M
ake
sure that no persons, animals or object sare in
the maneuvering range.
When you deactivate PARKTRONIC, Active Park-
ing Assist will also be deactivated.
For vehicles with atrailer coupling installed, the
minimum length for parking spaces will be
slightly increased.
If you have attached atrailer to your vehicle, you
should not use Active Parking Assist. Once the
electrical connection is established between
your vehicle and the trailer, Active Parking
Assist is no longer available. PARKTRONIC is
then deactivated for the rear area.
GWARNING
While parking or pulling out of aparking
space, the vehicle swings out and can drive
onto areas of the oncomingl ane. This could
result in acollision with another road user.
There is arisk of an accident.
