When driving with a loaded roof luggage rack or
trailer as well as with a fully laden or fully occu-
pied vehicle, theve hicle's driving and steering
ch aracteristics change.

damage the engine, electrics and transmission.
Wa ter can also enter the air intake of the engine
and cause engine damage.

cles, can create waves which may exceed the
maximum permissible dep thofthewa ter.
The braking e.ect of the brakes is reduced aTer
fo rd ing. Brake carefully while paying attention to

This function is an on-demand feature
(/ page 24).
The rear axle steering is an elect romechanical
auxiliary steering on there ar axle which adjusts
th e steering of there ar wheels according tothe
position of the front wheels, depending on the
speed. This results in greater manoeuvrability and
impr oved driving stability, e.g. when cornering.
Re ar axle steering has thefo llowing characteris-
tics:
R reduced steering e.ort and turning circle
re sulting in reduced parking e.ort
R impr oved driving stability, e.g. when cornering R
more direct steering resulting in impr oved

situations, the engine will not stop:
R you stop at a stop sign and there is no vehicle
in front of you.
R theve hicle that stopped in front of you starts
up again.
R you manoeuvre, turn the steering wheel
sharply or engage reve rsege ar.
% Ifth e system de tects an intelligent stop inhibi-
to r,fo rex ample, a stop sign, the engine will
not stop.
If yo u activate the HOLD function or engage
th e park position j,the engine can be
switched o. in spite of an intelligent stop
inhibitor.
The engine restarts au tomatically in thefo llowing
cases:
R you engage transmission position hork.
R you depress the accelerator pedal.
R theve hicle requ ires an automatic engine start.

ECO start/stop function symbols in the driver's
displa y:
R the symbol è(gre en) appears when the
ve hicle is at a standstill: the engine was
switched o. bythe ECO start/s top function.
R the symbol ç(yellow) appears when the
ve hicle is at a standstill: not all vehicle condi-
tions for an engine stop ha vebeen met.
R neither the symbol ènorç appears
when theve hicle is at a standstill: an intelli-
ge nt stop inhibitor was de tected, e.g. a stop
sign.
R the symbol sappears: the ECO start/s top
function is deactivated or there is a malfunc-
tion. If
th e engine was switched o. bythe ECO start/
stop function and you lea vetheve hicle, a warning
to ne sounds and the engine is not restar ted. In
addition, thefo llowing display message appears in
th e driver's displa y:

R The speed is within a suitable range.
R The road's course is suitable, e.g. no steep
uphill or downhill inclines or tight bends.
R You do not depress the accelerator or brake
pedal (e xcept for light brake applications).
% Glide mode can also be activated if you ha ve
selected the "Eco" setting forth e drive in the

Glide mode is deactivated again if one of the con-
ditions is no longer met.
