Locking and unlocking
Factory setting
Global unlocking
Press buttonŒ.
All turn signal lamps flash once. The
anti-theft alarm system is disarmed.
The vehicle will lock again automatically
and rearm the anti-theft alarm system
within approximately 40 seconds of
unlocking if:

neither door nor trunk is opened

the SmartKey is not inserted in the
starter switch

the central locking switch is not
activated
Warning!G
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey from the starter switch, take it
with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave
children unattended in the vehicle, or with
access to an unlocked vehicle. It is possible
for children to open a locked door from the
inside, which could result in an accident
and/or serious injury.
!To prevent possible malfunction, avoid
exposing the SmartKey to high levels of
electromagnetic radiation.
iUSA only:
This device complies with Part 15 of the
FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following
two conditions:
(1) This device may not cause harmful interfer-
ence, and
(2) this device must accept any interference re-
ceived, including interference that may
cause undesired operation.
Any unauthorized modification to this device

Press button‹.
With the trunk and all doors closed, all
turn signal lamps flash three times. The
anti-theft alarm system is armed.
Selective setting
If you frequently travel alone, you may wish
to reprogram the SmartKey so that
pressingŒ only unlocks the driver’s
door and the fuel filler flap.
Press and hold buttonsŒ and‹
simultaneously for about 5 seconds un-
til battery check lamp5 flashes twice.
The SmartKey will then function as
follows:
Unlocking driver’s door and fuel filler

turn signal lamps flash three times. The
anti-theft alarm system is armed.
Restoring to factory setting
Press and hold buttonsŒ and‹
simultaneously for about 6 seconds un-
til battery check lamp5 (
page 98)
flashes twice.
!If you can no longer lock or unlock the vehi-
cle with the SmartKey, then either the batteries
in the SmartKey are discharged, the SmartKey is
malfunctioning or the vehicle battery is drained.

Check the batteries in the SmartKey
(
page 101) and replace them if necessary
(
page 357).

Use the mechanical key to unlock the vehicle
(
page 355).

Have the vehicle battery and the battery con-
nections checked. Contact an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Center.
If the SmartKey is malfunctioning, contact Road-
side Assistance or an authorized Mercedes-Benz
Center.

Unlocking and opening the trunk
You can unlock the trunk separately.
A minimum height clearance of
5.5 ft (1.65 m) is required to open the
trunk lid.
Press and hold buttonŠ until the
trunk lid unlocks and opens slightly.
Checking the batteries
Press button ‹ or Œ.
Battery check lamp5 (
page 98)
comes on briefly to indicate that the
SmartKey batteries are in order.Loss of SmartKey or mechanical key
If you lose a SmartKey or mechanical key,
you should do the following:
Have the SmartKey deactivated by an
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
Report the loss of the SmartKey or the
mechanical key immediately to your
car insurance company.
If necessary, have the trunk lock
replaced.
Your authorized Mercedes-Benz Center
will be glad to supply you with a
replacement.
Opening the doors
Opening from the outside
For information on opening the doors from
the outside, see “Getting started”
(
page 38).
Opening from the inside
You can open a locked door from the in-
side. Open the door only if the vehicle is
stationary and when conditions are safe to
do so.
1Inside door handle
iIf battery check lamp5 does not come on
briefly during check, then the SmartKey
batteries are discharged.
Replace the batteries (
page 357).
You can obtain the required batteries at any
authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.
iIf the batteries are checked within signal
range of the vehicle, pressing button‹
orΠwill lock or unlock the vehicle
accordingly.

trunk lid.
The handle is located above the rear
license plate recess.

Pull on handle2 and lift the trunk lid.
The trunk can also be opened using

inside in an emergency, see “Trunk emer-
gency release” (
page 104).
Opening the trunk from the inside
You can open the trunk from the inside if
the vehicle is stationary.
A minimum height clearance of
5.5 ft (1.65 m) is required to open the
trunk lid.
The switch is located on the lower part of
the center console.
!Ensure sufficient side- and overhead clear-
ance prior to opening the doors, see “Main di-
mensions” (
page 387).
iIf the vehicle has previously been locked
with the SmartKey, opening a door from the
inside will trigger the anti-theft alarm system.
To cancel the alarm, do one of the following:

Press buttonŒ or‹ on the
SmartKey.

Insert the SmartKey in the starter switch.
!Always make sure that there is sufficient
overhead clearance.

Press switch1 until the trunk lid
unlocks and opens slightly.
Lift the trunk lid.
The trunk can also be opened using
buttonŠ on the SmartKey or from its
inside in an emergency, see “Trunk emer-
gency release” (
page 104).
Closing the trunk lid
1Handle
Lower trunk lid by firmly pulling on
handle1.
!Always make sure that there is sufficient
overhead clearance.
Warning!G
To prevent possible personal injury, always
keep hands and fingers away from the trunk
opening when closing the trunk lid. Be espe-
cially careful when small children are
around.
Make sure the trunk is closed when the en-
gine is running and while driving. Among
other dangers, such as blocked visibility,
exhaust fumes may enter the vehicle
interior. These fumes are damaging to your
health.
!Do not pull on the Airbrake. Otherwise the
Airbrake could be damaged.
iDo not place the SmartKey in the open
trunk. You may lock yourself out.
If the vehicle was previously centrally locked, the
trunk lid will lock automatically after closing it.
All turn signals will flash three times to confirm
locking.

Trunk emergency release
The emergency release button is located
on the inside of the trunk lid.
With the emergency release button, the
trunk can be opened from inside the trunk.
Emergency release button
Briefly press emergency release
button.
The trunk unlocks and the trunk lid
opens slightly.
Push up the trunk lid to fully open.Illumination of the emergency release
button:

The button will flash for 30 minutes
after opening the trunk.

The button will flash for 60 minutes
after closing the trunk.
Automatic locking
The doors and the trunk lock automatically
when the vehicle is set into motion.
You can open a locked door from the in-
side. Open door only when conditions are
safe to do so.
You can deactivate the automatic locking
using the control system (
page 139).
iThe emergency release button unlocks the
trunk while the vehicle is standing still or in mo-
tion.
iThe emergency release button does not
open the trunk lid if the vehicle battery is dis-
charged or disconnected.
If the vehicle has previously been locked from
the outside with the SmartKey, opening the trunk
from the inside using the emergency release
button will trigger the anti-theft alarm system.
To cancel the alarm, do one of the following:

Press buttonŒ or‹ on the
SmartKey.

Insert the SmartKey in the starter switch.
iThe doors unlock automatically after an ac-
cident if the force of the impact exceeds a preset
threshold.
The vehicle locks automatically when the ignition
is switched on and the wheels are turning at ve-
hicle speeds of approximately 9 mph (15 km/h)
or more. You could therefore lock yourself out
when the vehicle

Switching interior lighting on
Press switch3.
The interior lighting switches on.
Switching interior lighting off
Press switch3 again.
The interior lighting switches off.
Reading lamps
The reading lamps are integrated into the
interior rear view mirror.
Press reading lamp switch1or2 to
switch on the desired reading lamp.
Press reading lamp switch1or2
again to switch off the respective
reading lamp.
Courtesy lighting
For better orientation in the dark, courtesy
lamps will illuminate the interior of your
vehicle.
When you open a door:

the driver’s and passenger’s footwells
If the SmartKey is in starter switch
position1:

the center console
Trunk lamp
The trunk lamp switches on if the trunk is
opened.
If you leave the trunk open for an extended
period of time, the trunk lamp will switch
off automatically after approximately
10 minutes.
iThe center console is lit from the interior
rear view mirror.
iThe setting selected for the interior lighting
is used for the trunk lighting as well.

Audio system
Operational readiness of CD changer
The CD changer is located in the trunk on
the left side.
1CD changer
The CD changer can be operated from the
front control panel of the radio. A loaded
magazine must be installed to play CDs.Loading/unloading a CD magazine

Slide changer door to the right and
press eject buttong.
The CD magazine4 will be ejected.
Remove CD magazine and pull
CD tray3 fully out.
Place CD1 in recess of CD tray, label

Push magazine into CD changer2 in
direction of arrow and close sliding
door.
Playing CDs
Pressi button.
CD will appear in the display.
The last CD listened to will then start play-
ing at the point where it was switched off.
After the last track on a CD has finished,
the next CD is automatically played.
iCDs which have been inserted improperly or
are unreadable will not be played.
You do not need to place CDs in all six CD trays.
The lowest tray is magazine slot number 1 and
the highest tray is magazine slot number 6.

Reach into the recess and lift armrest.
The armrest opens automatically.
Warning!G
Do not place heavy or fragile objects, or ob-
jects having sharp edges in the map pocket.
In an accident, during hard braking or sud-
den maneuvers, they could be thrown
around inside the vehicle, and cause injury
to vehicle occupants.
Warning!G
To help avoid personal injury during a colli-
sion or sudden maneuver, exercise care
when storing objects in the vehicle. Put lug-
gage or cargo in the trunk. Do not pile lug-
gage or cargo higher than the seat backs.
Do not place anything on the shelf below the
rear window.
Parcel nets cannot secure hard or heavy
objects.
Keep compartment lids closed. This will help
to prevent stored objects from being thrown
about and injuring vehicle occupants during
an accident.

Parcel net in trunk
There is a net available in the trunk to
secure loads:
Pull the trunk floor net from the trunk
back wall towards the front over the
luggage.
Hang the hooks of the net on the eyes
on the trunk floor.
iThe telephone (page 209), the Roadside
Assistance button• (
page 217) and the
Information button¡ (
page 218) are
located in the cover of the center storage
compartment.
iWith the ignition switched on and cover2
opened, the storage compartment will be
illuminated.
