when there is a malfunction.
Tire Pressure Monitor
TPM
The concept
The system monitors tire inflation pressure in
the four mounted tires. The system warns you if
there is a significant loss of pressure in one ormore tires. For this purpose, sensors in the tire
valves measure the tire inflation pressure.
Information With use of the system observe further inforâ
mation found under Tire inflation pressure, reâ
fer to page 186.
Functional requirements The system must have been reset with the corâ
rect tire inflation pressure; otherwise, reliable
signaling of tire pressure loss is not assured.
Reset the system after each adjustment of the
tire inflation pressure and after every tire or
wheel change.
Always use wheels with TPM electronics to enâ
sure that the system will operate properly.
Status display The current status of the Tire Pressure Monitor
TPM can be displayed on the Control Display,
e.g., whether or not the TPM is active.
On the Control Display:1. "Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)"

All wheels are yellowA flat tire or major drop in inflation pressure in
several tires.
Wheels, gray The system cannot detect a flat tire due to a
malfunction.
Additional information The status control display additionally shows
the current tire inflation pressures. It shows the
actual values read; they may vary depending
on driving style or weather conditions.
Carry out reset Reset the system after each adjustment of the
tire inflation pressure and after every tire or
wheel change.
On the Control Display and on the vehicle:1. "Vehicle info"2."Vehicle status"3. "Perform reset"4.Start the engine - do not drive off.5.Reset the tire inflation pressure using
"Perform reset".6.Drive away.
The tires are shown in gray and the status is
displayed.
After driving faster than 19 mph/30 km/h for a
short period, the set tire inflation pressures are
accepted as reference values. The resetting
process is completed automatically while drivâ
ing. After successful completion of the reset,
the tires appear in green on the Control Display
and "Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) active" is disâ played.
The progress of the reset is displayed.
You may interrupt this trip at any time. When
you continue the reset resumes automatically.
Low tire pressure message
The yellow warning lamp lights up. A
Check Control message is displayed.âˇThere is a flat tire or a major loss in
tire inflation pressure.âˇA reset of the system was not carried out
after a wheel was changed. The system
therefore issues a warning based on the tire
pressures before the last reset.1.Reduce your speed and stop cautiously.
Avoid sudden braking and steering maneuâ
vers.2.Check whether the vehicle is fitted with
normal tires or run-flat tires.
Run-flat tires, refer to page 193, are laâ
beled with a circular symbol containing the
letters RSC marked on the tire's sidewall.
WARNING
A damaged regular tire with low or missâ
ing tire inflation pressure impacts handling,
such as steering and braking response. Run-flat
tires can maintain limited stability. There is risk
of an accident. Do not continue driving if the
vehicle is not equipped with run-flat tires. Folâ
low the information on run-flat tires and conâ
tinued driving with these tires. â
A low tire inflation pressure might turn on DSC
Dynamic Stability Control.
Actions in the event of a flat tireNormal tires
1.Identify the damaged tire.
Check the air pressure in all four tires, e.g.
using the tire pressure gage of a tire repair
kit.
If the tire inflation pressure in all four tires is
correct, the Tire Pressure Monitor may not
have been initialized. In this case, initialize
the system.
If identification of flat tire damage is not
possible, please contact a dealerâs serviceSeite 110CONTROLSSafety110

center or another qualified service center or
repair shop.2.Repair the flat tire, e.g. with a tire repair kit
or by changing the tire.
Use of tire sealant, for example, the Mobility
System, may damage the TPM wheel electronâ
ics. In this case, have the electronics checked at
the next opportunity and have them replaced if
needed.
Run-flat tires Maximum speed
You may continue driving with a damaged tire
at speeds up to 50 mph/80 km/h.
Continued driving with a flat tire
If continuing to drive with a damaged tire:
1.Avoid sudden braking and steering maneuâ
vers.2.Do not exceed a speed of 50 mph/80 km/h.3.Check the air pressure in all four tires at the
next opportunity.
If the tire inflation pressure in all four tires is
shown to be correct, it is possible that the
Tire Pressure Monitor did not perform a reâ
set. Then perform the reset.
Possible driving distance with complete loss of
tire inflation pressure:
The possible driving distance with a flat tire deâ
pends on cargo load, driving style and road
conditions.
A vehicle with an average load has a possible
driving range of approx. 50 miles/80 km.
A vehicle with a damaged tire reacts differently,
e.g., it has reduced lane stability during brakâ
ing, a longer braking distance and different
self-steering properties. Adjust your driving
style accordingly. Avoid abrupt steering maâ
neuvers or driving over obstacles, e.g., curbs,
potholes, etc.
Because the possible driving distance depends
on how the vehicle is used during the trip, the
actual distance may be shorter or longer deâ
pending on the driving speed, road conditions,
external temperature, cargo load, etc.
WARNING
Your vehicle handles differently when a
run-flat tire is damaged and has low or missing
tire inflation pressure, e.g., your lane stability is
reduced when braking, braking distances are
longer and the self-steering properties will
change. There is risk of an accident.
Drive moderately and do not exceed a speed of
50 mph/80 km/h. â
Final tire failure
Vibrations or loud noises while driving can indiâ
cate the final failure of a tire.
Reduce speed and stop; otherwise, pieces of
the tire could come loose and cause an acciâ
dent.
Do not continue driving. Contact a dealerâs
service center or another qualified service cenâ
ter or repair shop.
Required inflation pressure check
message
A Check Control message is displayed in the folâ
lowing situationsâˇThe system has detected a wheel change,
but no reset was done.âˇInflation was not carried out according to
specifications.âˇThe tire inflation pressure has fallen below
the level of the last confirmation.
In this case:
âˇCheck the tire pressure and correct as
needed.âˇCarry out a reset of the system after a tire
change.Seite 111SafetyCONTROLS111

System limits
The system does not function properly if a reset
has not been carried out, e.g., a flat tire is reâ
ported though tire inflation pressures are corâ
rect.
The tire inflation pressure depends on the tire's
temperature. Driving or exposure to the sun
will increase the tire's temperature, thus inâ
creasing the tire inflation pressure. The tire inâ
flation pressure is reduced when the tire temâ perature falls again. These circumstances may
cause a warning when temperatures fall very
sharply.
The system cannot indicate sudden serious tire
damage caused by external circumstances.
Malfunction The yellow warning lamp flashes and
then lights up continuously. A Check
Control message is displayed. No flat
tire or loss of tire pressure can be detected.
Examples and recommendations in the followâ
ing situations:âˇA wheel without TPM electronics, for examâ
ple an emergency wheel, is mounted: Have
it checked by a dealerâs service center or
another qualified service center or repair
shop as needed.âˇMalfunction: Have system checked by a
dealerâs service center or another qualified
service center or repair shop.âˇTPM was unable to complete the reset. Reâ
set the system again.âˇInterference through systems or devices
with the same radio frequency: After leavâ
ing the area of the interference, the system
automatically becomes active again.
Declaration according to NHTSA/FMVSS
138 Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Each tire, including the spare (if provided)
should be checked monthly when cold and inâ
flated to the inflation pressure recommended
by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle
placard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your
vehicle has tires of a different size than the size
indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation
pressure label, you should determine the
proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.) As
an added safety feature, your vehicle has been
equipped with a tire pressure monitoring sysâ
tem (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure
telltale when one or more of your tires is signifiâ
cantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when the
low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you should
stop and check your tires as soon as possible,
and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving
on a significantly under-inflated tire causes the
tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Unâ
der-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and
tire tread life, and may affect the vehicle's hanâ
dling and stopping ability. Please note that the
TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire mainteâ
nance, and it is the driver's responsibility to
maintain correct tire pressure, even if under-inâ
flation has not reached the level to trigger illuâ
mination of the TPMS low tire pressure telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with a
TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when
the system is not operating properly. The TPMS
malfunction indicator is combined with the low
tire pressure telltale. When the system detects
a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approxiâ
mately one minute and then remain continuâ
ously illuminated. This sequence will continue
upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as
the malfunction exists. When the malfunction
indicator is illuminated, the system may not be
able to detect or signal low tire pressure as inâ
tended. TPMS malfunctions may occur for a vaâ
riety of reasons, including the installation of reâ
placement or alternate tires or wheels on the
vehicle that prevent the TPMS from functioning
properly. Always check the TPMS malfunction
telltale after replacing one or more tires or
wheels on your vehicle to ensure that the reâ
placement or alternate tires and wheels allow
the TPMS to continue to function properly.Seite 112CONTROLSSafety112

Wheels and tiresVehicle features and opâ
tions
This chapter describes all standard, country-
specific and optional features offered with the
series. It also describes features that are not
necessarily available in your car, e. g., due to
the selected options or country versions. This
also applies to safety-related functions and sysâ
tems. The respectively applicable country proviâ
sions must be observed when using the respecâ
tive features and systems.
Tire inflation pressure Safety informationThe tire characteristics and tire inflation presâ
sure influence the following:âˇThe service life of the tires.âˇRoad safety.âˇDriving comfort.
Checking the tire inflation pressure
WARNING
A tire with low or missing tire inflation
pressure impacts handling, such as steering
and braking response. There is risk of an acciâ
dent. Regularly check the tire inflation pressure,
and correct it as needed, e.g., twice a month and before a long trip. â
Tires have a natural, consistent loss of tire inflaâ tion pressure.
Tires heat up while driving, and the tire inflation
pressure increases along with the tire's temperâ
ature. The tire inflation pressure specifications
relate to cold tires or tires with the ambient
temperature.
Only check the tire inflation pressure when the
tires are cold. This means after driving no more
than 1.25 miles/2 km or when the vehicle has
been parked for at least 2 hours.
The displays of inflation devices may under-
read by up to 0.1 bar.
For Flat Tire Monitor: after correcting the tire
inflation pressure, reinitialize the Flat Tire Moniâ
tor.
For Tire Pressure Monitor: after correcting the
tire inflation pressure, reset the Tire Pressure
Monitor.âˇReinitialize the Flat Tire Monitor.âˇReinitialize the Tire Pressure Monitor.
Pressure specifications
The tire inflation pressure table, refer to
page 187, contains all tire inflation pressure
specifications for the specified tire sizes at the
ambient temperature. The tire inflation presâ
sure values apply to tire sizes approved by the
manufacturer of the vehicle for the vehicle
type.
To identify the correct tire inflation pressure,
please note the following:
âˇTire sizes of your vehicle.âˇMaximum permitted driving speed.
Tire inflation pressures up to 100 mph/
160 km/h
For speeds of up to 100 mph/160 km/h and for
optimum driving comfort, note the pressure
values in the tire inflation pressure table, refer
to page 187, and adjust as necessary.
