The automatic transmission fluid is over- heating.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place, place the se- lector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and
open the bonnet with the engine running to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the
warning
display is no longer showing. It is safe to
continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orappears frequently, we recommend you to have your vehicle inspected.

When
warning display is showing
It may be that there is something unusual happening in the A/T, causing a safety de-
vice to activate. We recommend you to have
your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.

Operation of the A/T

CAUTIONlBefore selecting a gear with the engine run-
ning and the vehicle stationary, fully depressthe brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from
creeping.
The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the gear is engaged, especially when the en-
gine speed is high, at fast idle or with the air conditioning operating, the brakes should
only be released when you are ready to drive
away.
l Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at
all times.
Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency.
l To prevent sudden acceleration, never race
the engine when shifting from the “P”
(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
l Operating the accelerator pedal while the
other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-
mature wear of brake pads.
l Use the selector lever in the correct shift po-
sition in accordance with driving conditions.
Never coast downhill backward with the se-
lector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or sports mode position or coast forward with the se-
lector lever in the “R” (REVERSE) position.
The engine may stop and the unexpected in- crease in brake pedal effort and steeringwheel weight could lead to an accidentCAUTIONl Do not race the engine with brake pedal
pressed when the vehicle is stationary.
This can damage the A/T.
Also, when you depress the accelerator ped- al while holding down the brake pedal withthe selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) posi-

from the “P” (PARK) position to another po-
sition while the brake pedal is pressed and
held down with the ignition switch or the op- eration mode in ON, the battery may be flator the shift-lock mechanism may be malfunc-
tioning. Immediately have your vehicle checked by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-
thorized Service Point.

If you need to move the vehicle, shift the se- lector lever as follows. 1. Make sure the parking brake is applied.
2. Stop the engine if it is running.
3. Insert a straight blade (or minus) screw-
driver with a cloth over its tip into notch
(A) of the cover. Pry gently as shown to remove the cover.
4. Depress the brake pedal with the right
foot.

“D” DRIVE
This position is used for most city and high-way driving. The transmission will automati-
cally and continuously change its gear radio depending on road and driving conditions.
CAUTIONl To prevent transmission damage, never shift
into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while the vehicle is inmotion.Sports mode

Whether the vehicle is stationary or in mo-
tion, sports mode is selected by gently push-ing the selector lever from the “D” (DRIVE)
position into the manual gate (A). To return to “D” range operation, gently push the selec-tor lever back into the main gate (B).

In sports mode, gear ratio shifts can be made
rapidly simply by moving the selector lever backward and forward. Shift paddles at thesteering wheel can also be used to shift the
gear ratio. In contrast to a manual transmis- sion, the sports mode allows gear shifts with
the accelerator pedal depressed.
NOTEl You can shift into sports mode with shift
paddles when the selector lever is in the main gate as well. Also, you can return to
the “D” range operation in any of following ways.
When returning to “D” range operation, the selector lever position display will change to
“D” (DRIVE) position.
• Pull the “+ (SHIFT UP)” side shift paddle
forward (towards the driver) for over 2 seconds.
• Stop the vehicle.
• Push the selector lever from the “D”
(DRIVE) position into the manual gate
(A) and push the selector lever back into

l Repeated continuous operation of the selec-
tor lever or the shift paddles will continuous- ly switch shift position.
l Do not use the left- and right-hand shift pad-
dles at the same time. Doing so could cause a shift of gear ratio that you do not expect.

NOTElThe upward shift may be made automatical-
ly in sports mode when the engine revolu-
tions rises and approaches the tachometer’s
red zone (the red-coloured part of the tach- ometer dial).
l In sports mode, only the 6 forward gears can
be selected. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the selector lever to the “R” (RE-
VERSE) or “P” (PARK) position as re- quired.
l To maintain good running performance, the
transmission may refuse to perform an up- shift when the selector lever is moved to the“+ (SHIFT UP)” position at certain vehicle
speeds. Also, to prevent over-revving of the engine, the transmission may refuse to per-
form a downshift when the lever is moved to
the “- (SHIFT DOWN)” position at certain vehicle speeds. When this happens, a buzzer
sounds to indicate that a downshift is not go-
ing to take place.
l In sports mode, downward shifts are made
automatically when the vehicle slows down.

The electronically controlled 4WD system isa 4-wheel drive system that allows one of
three drive modes to be selected with a switch, in accordance with the driving condi-tions.

The following drive modes are available.

Drive mode-selector
The drive mode can be changed by pressing
the drive mode-selector while the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON.
By pressing the drive mode-selector, the
drive mode can be changed in order of “2WD”, “4WD” AUTO and “4WD LOCK”.

The drive mode is displayed as an interrupt
display on the information screen in the mul- ti-information display when the drive mode is
changed.
After a few seconds, the information screen
will then return to its prior display.

• Keep your speed low and do not drive

hicle. Before you leave paved roads, be sure all scheduled maintenance and service has
been done, and that you have inspected your vehicle. Pay special attention to the condi- tion of the tyres, and check the tyre pres-

l Note that the stopping distance required of a
4-wheel drive vehicle differs very little from
that of a 2-wheel drive vehicle. When driv-
ing on a snow-covered road or a slippery, muddy surface, make sure that you keep a
sufficient distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you.NOTEl The driving posture should be more upright;
adjust the seat to a good position for easy
steering and pedal operation. Be sure to wear
the seat belt.
l After driving on rough roads, check each
part of the vehicle and wash it thoroughlywith water. Refer to the “Inspection andmaintenance following rough road opera-
tion” section and “Maintenance” section.CAUTIONl Setting the drive mode-selector to “4WD
LOCK” to drive on dry paved road will in-
crease fuel consumption, with possible noise generation.
Turning sharp corners
When turning a sharp corner in “4WD
LOCK” position at low speed, a slight differ- ence in steering may be experienced similar
to as if the brakes were applied. This is called tight corner braking and results from each of
the 4 tyres being at a different distance from
the corner. The phenomenon is typical of 4- wheel drive vehicles. If this occurs, either
straighten out the steering wheel, or change to “2WD” or “4WD AUTO” mode.
On snowy or icy roads
Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”
or “4WD LOCK” in accordance with the road conditions, and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start.
NOTEl The use of snow tyres is recommended.
l Maintain a safe distance between vehicles,
avoid sudden braking, and use engine brak- ing (downshifting).CAUTIONl Avoid sudden braking, sudden acceleration
and sharp turning. Skidding occurs and con-
trol of the vehicle could be lost.
Driving on sandy or muddy
roads
Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD LOCK”
and then gradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on
the accelerator pedal as constant as possible,
and drive at low speed.

Jacking up a 4-wheel drive ve-hicleWARNINGl Do not crank the engine while the vehicle
is jacked up.
The tyre on the ground may turn and the vehicle may roll off the jack.
Clutch operation
Quick or slight clutch engagement made
while the engine is running at high speed will
cause damage to the clutch and transmission because the tractive force is very great.
Operate the pedal slowly and positively.
Braking

All the parts of the brake system are critical
to safety. We recommend you to have the ve- hicle checked at regular intervals according
to the service booklet.
CAUTIONl Avoid driving habits that cause heavy brak-
ing and never “ride” the brakes by resting
your foot on the brake pedal while driving.
It causes brake overheating and fade.Brake system
The service brake is divided into two brake
circuits. And your vehicle is equipped with
power brakes. If one brake circuit fails, the other is available to stop the vehicle. If you
should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. In these situations,
even if the brake pedal moves down to the very end of its possible stroke or resists being
depressed, keep depressing the brake pedal
down harder and further than usual; stop
driving as soon as possible and have the brake system repaired.
WARNINGl Do not turn off the engine while your ve-
hicle is in motion. If you turn off the en- gine while driving, the power assistance
for the braking system will stop working and your brakes will not work effectively.
l If the power assist is lost or if either brake
hydraulic system stops working properly,
have your vehicle checked immediately.
Warning display
The brake warning lamp illuminates to indi-
cate a fault in the braking system. A warning
is also displayed on the multi-information display. Refer to “Brake warning lamp” on page 5-44 and “Brake warning display” on
page 5-45.
When brakes are wet
Check the brake system while driving at a
low speed immediately after starting, espe- cially when the brakes are wet, to confirmthey work normally.
A film of water can be formed on the brake
discs and prevent normal braking after driv-
ing in heavy rain or through large puddles, or after the vehicle is washed. If this occurs, dry
the brakes out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal.
When driving downhill
It is important to take advantage of the en-
gine braking by shifting to a lower shift posi- tion while driving on steep downhill roads in order to prevent the brakes from overheating.
WARNINGl Do not leave any objects near the brake
pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; do- ing so could prevent the full pedal stroke
that would be necessary in an emergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operatedfreely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.
