CAUTIONl[For 2WD vehicles equipped with the Active
Stability Control (ASC)]
If the vehicle is towed with the ignition switch in the “ON” position or the operation
mode in ON and only the front wheels or on- ly the rear wheels raised off the ground (Type B or C), the ASC may operate, result-
ing in an accident.
When towing the vehicle with the rear wheels raised, turn the ignition switch to the
“ACC” position or put the operation mode in ACC.
When towing the vehicle with the front wheels raised, keep the ignition switch or the
operation mode as follows.
[Except vehicles equipped with keyless op- eration system]
The ignition switch is in the “LOCK” or
“ACC” position.
[Vehicles equipped with keyless operation system]
The operation mode is in OFF or ACC.
Towing with rear wheels off the
ground (Type B)
Place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral)
position.
Turn the ignition switch to the “ACC” posi-
tion or put the operation mode in ACC and
secure the steering wheel in a straight-ahead position with a rope or tiedown strap. Neverplace the ignition switch in the “LOCK” po-
sition or put the operation mode in OFF when towing.
Towing with front wheels off the ground (Type C)
Release the parking brake.
Place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position ( M/T) or the selector lever in the
“N” (Neutral) position (CVT).
Emergency towing
If towing service is not available in an emer-
gency, your vehicle may be temporarily tow- ed by a rope secured to the towing hook.
If your vehicle is to be towed by another ve- hicle or if your vehicle tows another vehicle,
pay careful attention to the following points:
If your vehicle is to be towed by
another vehicle
1. The front towing hook (A) is located as
shown in the illustration. Secure the tow
rope to the front towing hook.
NOTEl Do not use the tie-down hooks (B) for tow-
ing. These hooks are provided only for thepurpose of transporting the vehicle itself.
Using any part other than the designated
towing hook (A) could result in damage to
the vehicle body.
l Using a wire rope or metal chain can result
in damage to the vehicle body. It is best to
use a non-metallic rope. If you use a wire
rope or metal chain, wrap it with cloth at any point where it touches the vehicle body.
l Use care that the tow rope is kept as hori-
zontal as possible. An angled tow rope can
damage the vehicle body.
2. Keep the engine running.
If the engine is not running, perform the
following operation to unlock the steer- ing wheel.

Adequate care of your vehicle at regular in- tervals serves to preserve the value and ap-
pearance as long as possible.
Maintenance items as described in this own- er’s manual can be performed by the owner.We recommend you to have the periodic in-
spection and maintenance performed by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service
Point or another specialist.In the event a malfunction or a problem is discovered, we recommend you to have it
checked and repaired. This section contains information on inspection maintenance pro- cedures that you can do yourself. Follow theinstructions and cautions for each of the vari-
ous procedures.

WARNINGl When checking or servicing the inside of
the engine compartment, make sure theengine is switched off and has had achance to cool down.WARNINGl If it is necessary to do work in the engine
compartment with the engine running, be
especially careful that your clothing, hair,
etc., does not become caught by the fan, drive belts, or other moving parts.
l After performing the maintenance, make
sure that no tools or cloths are left behind in the engine compartment.
If they are left behind, a fire or damage to the vehicle may occur.
l The fan may turn on automatically even if
the engine is not running. Turn the igni-
tion switch to the “LOCK” position or put
the operation mode in OFF to be safe while you work in the engine compart-ment.
l Do not smoke, cause sparks or allow open
flames around fuel or battery. The fumes are flammable.
l Be extremely cautious when working
around the battery. It contains poisonous
and corrosive sulphuric acid.
l Do not get under your vehicle with just
the body jack supporting it. Always use automotive jack stands.
l Improper handling of components and
materials used in the vehicle can endanger
your personal safety. We recommend you to consult a specialist for necessary infor-
mation.

To check and refill engine oil
Petrol-powered vehicles
Diesel-powered vehicles
The engine oil used has a significant effect on the engine’s performance, service life and
startability. Be sure to use oil of the recom- mended quality and appropriate viscosity.
All engines consume a certain amount of oil during normal operation. Therefore, it is im-portant to check the oil level at regular inter-
vals or before starting a long trip.
1. Park the car on a horizontal surface.
2. Switch off the engine.
3. Wait a few minutes.
4. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a
clean cloth.
5. Reinsert the dipstick as far as it goes.
6. Remove the dipstick and read the oil lev- el, which should always be within therange indicated.
7. If the oil level is below the specified
limit, remove the cap located on the cyl- inder head cover and add enough oil to
raise the level to within the specified
range. Do not overfill to avoid engine damage. Be sure to use the specified en-
gine oil and do not mix various types of
oil.
8. After adding oil, close the cap securely.
9. Confirm the oil level by repeating step 4
to 6.CAUTIONl In diesel-powered vehicles, when burning
away and removing soot accumulated in the
DPF, fuel can mix with the engine oil and an increase in the engine oil level may occur.
This does not indicate an abnormality.
However, if the engine oil level is at or over the “X” mark (B) on the engine oil dipstick
(A), change the engine oil.

NOTElThe engine oil will deteriorate rapidly if the
vehicle is subjected to severe conditions, re-
quiring earlier oil replacement.
Please refer to the maintenance schedule.

Petrol-powered vehicles
l Select engine oil of the proper SAE vis-
cosity number according to the atmos- pheric temperature.
SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 5W-40 engine oils can only be used if they meet
ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or A5/B5 and API SM (or higher) specifications.
l Use engine oil conforming to the follow-
ing classification: • API classification: “For service SM”
or higher
• ILSAC certificated oil
• ACEA classification:
“For service A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, or A5/B5”
NOTEl Use of additives is not recommended since
they may reduce the effectiveness of addi-
tives already included in the engine oil. It may result in failure of the mechanical as-
sembly.
Diesel-powered vehicles
1600 models
l Use the following engine oil.
• Recommended engine oil: “TOTAL QUARTZ INEO FIRST
0W-30”
“TOTAL ACTIVA INEO ECS
5W-30”
2200 models
l Select engine oil of the proper SAE vis-
cosity number according to the atmos- pheric temperature.

lUse engine oil conforming to the follow-
ing classification: • ACEA classification: “For service C1, C2, C3 or C4”
• JASO classification: “For service DL-1”

If those classifications are not available,
contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Au-

To check the coolant level
A transparent coolant reserve tank (A) is lo-cated in the engine compartment.
The coolant level in this tank should be kept
between the “LOW” and “FULL” marks when measured while the engine is cold.To add coolant
The cooling system is a closed system andnormally the loss of coolant should be very
slight. A noticeable drop in the coolant level
could indicate leakage. If this occurs, we rec- ommend you to have the system checked as
soon as possible.
If the level should drop below the “LOW” level on the reserve tank, open the lid and
add coolant.
Also, if the reserve tank is completely empty, remove the radiator cap (B) and add coolant until the level reaches the filler neck.
WARNINGl Do not open the radiator cap (B) while the
engine is hot. The coolant system is under
pressure and any hot coolant escaping
could cause severe burns.
Anti-freeze
The engine coolant contains an ethylene gly-
col anti-corrosion agent. Some parts of the engine are cast aluminium alloy, and periodic
changing of the engine coolant is necessary to prevent corrosion of these parts.

CAUTIONlA temporary spare tyre can be fitted tempo-
rarily in place of a tyre that has been re-
moved during the tyre rotation. However, it must not be included in the regular tyre rota-
tion sequence.
l If the tyres have arrows (A) indicating the
correct direction of rotation, swap the front
and rear tyres on the left-hand side of the ve- hicle and the front and rear tyres on the right-hand side of the vehicle separately. Keep each tyre on its original side of the ve-
hicle. When fitting the tyres, make sure the
arrows point in the direction in which the wheels will turn when the vehicle moves forward. Any tyre whose arrow points in the
wrong direction will not perform to its full potential.Front
CAUTIONl Avoid the combined use of different types of
tyres.
Using different types of tyres can affect ve-
hicle performance and safety.Snow tyres

The use of snow tyres is recommended for
driving on snow and ice. To preserve driving stability, mount snow tyres of the same size and tread pattern on all 4 wheels.
A snow tyre that is worn down more than
50% is no longer appropriate to use.
Snow tyres which do not meet specifications must not be used.
CAUTIONl Observe permissible maximum speed for
your snow tyres and the legal speed limit.
l As your vehicle is equipped with a tyre pres-
sure monitoring system, only MITSUBISHI
MOTORS genuine wheels should be used.
Use of another type of wheel risks air leaks and sensor damage, as it will not be possible
to install the tyre inflation pressure sensors
properly.
Refer to “Tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS)*” on page 6-59.NOTEl The laws and regulations concerning snow
tyres (driving speed, required use, type, etc.)
vary. Find out and follow the laws and regu- lations in the area you intend to drive.
l If flange nuts are used on your vehicle,
change to tapered nuts when steel wheels are used.Tyre chains

If tyre chains have to be used, ensure that
they are fitted only on the drive wheels
(front) in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
On 4WD vehicles in which the driving power
is distributed preferentially to the front wheels, ensure that the tyre chains are fitted on the front.
Use only tyre chains which are designed for use with the tyres mounted on the vehicle: use of the incorrect size or type of chain
could result in damage to the vehicle body.

Fuel, engine coolant, oil and ex- haust gas leakage
Look under the body of your vehicle to check
for fuel, engine coolant, oil and exhaust gas
leaks.
WARNINGl If you see a suspicious fuel leak or if you
smell fuel, do not operate the vehicle; call
your MITSUBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point for assistance.
Exterior and interior lamp op-
eration
Operate the combination lamp switch to
check that all lamps are functioning properly.
If the lamps do not illuminate, the probable cause is a blown fuse or defective lamp bulb.
Check the fuses first. If there is no blown
fuse, check the lamp bulbs.
For information regarding the inspection and
replacement of the fuses and the lamp bulbs, refer to “Fuses” on page 10-20 and “Re-
placement of lamp bulbs” on page 10-26.
If the fuses and bulbs are all OK, we recom-
mend you to have your vehicle checked and
repaired.
Meter, gauge and indicator/warning lamps operation
Start the engine and check the operation of all instruments, gauges and indication andwarning lamps.
If there is anything wrong, we recommend you to have your vehicle inspected.
Hinges and latches lubrication
Check all latches and hinges, and, if necessa- ry, have them lubricated.

Ventilation slots
The ventilation slots in front of the wind-
screen should be kept clear of leaves or brushed clear after heavy snowfall, so that
the operation of the heating and ventilation
systems will not be impaired.

CAUTIONlBulbs are extremely hot immediately after
being turned off.
When replacing a bulb, wait for it to cool
sufficiently before touching it. You could otherwise be burnt.
l Do not install commercially available LED-
type bulbs.
Commercially available LED-type bulbs
could adversely affect the operation of the vehicle, such as by preventing the lamps andother vehicle equipment from operating
properly.NOTEl If you are unsure of how to carry out the
work as required, we recommend you to consult a specialist.
l Be careful not to scratch the vehicle body
when removing a lamp or lens.
l When it rains or when the vehicle has been
washed, the inside of the lens sometimes be-
comes foggy. This is the same phenomenon as when window glass mists up on a humid
day, and does not indicate a functional prob- lem.
When the lamp is switched on, the heat will
remove the fog. However, if water gathers inside the lamp, we recommend you to havethe lamp checked.Bulb capacity

1. When replacing the bulb on the left side
of the vehicle in the case of diesel-pow-
ered vehicles, remove the bolt (A) hold- ing down the relay box and move the re-
lay box towards the rear of the vehicle.
