CAUTIONlIf malfunction occurs in the
A/T while driv-
ing, the warning display or the warning
display will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display.
In this case, immediately park your vehicle
in a safe place and follow these procedures:
When
warning display is showing
The automatic transmission fluid is over- heating.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place, place the se- lector lever in the “P” (Park) position, and
open the bonnet with the engine running to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the
warning
display is no longer showing. It is safe to
continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orappears frequently, we recommend you to have your vehicle inspected.
When
warning display is showing
It may be that there is something unusual happening in the A/T, causing a safety de-
vice to activate. We recommend that you
have your vehicle inspected immediately.
Operation of the A/T

CAUTIONl Before selecting a gear with the engine run-
ning and the vehicle stationary, fully depressthe brake pedal to prevent the vehicle from
creeping.
The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the gear is engaged, especially when the en-
gine speed is high, at fast idle or with the air conditioning operating, the brakes should
only be released when you are ready to drive
away.
l Depress the brake pedal with the right foot at
all times.
Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency.
l To prevent sudden acceleration, never race
the engine when shifting from the “P”
(PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
l Operating the accelerator pedal while the
other foot is resting on the brake pedal will affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-
mature wear of brake pads.
l Use the selector lever in the correct shift po-
sition in accordance with driving conditions.
Never coast downhill backward with the se-
lector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or sports mode position or coast forward with the se-
lector lever in the “R” (REVERSE) position.
The engine may stop and the unexpected in- crease in brake pedal effort and steeringwheel weight could lead to an accident.CAUTIONl Do not race the engine with brake pedal
pressed when the vehicle is stationary.
This can damage the A/T.
Also, when you depress the accelerator ped- al while holding down the brake pedal withthe selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) posi-
tion, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation
with the selector lever in the “N” (NEU-
TRAL) position.Passing acceleration

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE)
position, push the accelerator to the floor.The A/T will automatically downshift.
NOTEl In “Sports mode”, downshifts do not take
place when the accelerator is depressed all

The transmission prevents unnecessary up-
shifts even when the accelerator pedal is re- leased and ensures smooth driving.

There could be a system malfunction if the
warning display or the warning display is
displayed on the information screen in the
multi-information display.
CAUTIONl If malfunction occurs in the CVT while driv-
ing, the warning display or the warning
display will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display.
In this case, follow these procedures:

The CVT fluid is overheating. The engine control may activate to lower the CVT fluid
temperature, causing the engine revolutions
and vehicle speed to decrease. In this case, take one of the following measures.
• Slow down your vehicle.
• Stop the vehicle in a safe place, place the
selector lever in the “P” (Park) position,and open the bonnet with the engine run-
ning to allow the engine to cool down.
After a while, confirm that the
warning
display is no longer showing. It is safe to
continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains orappears frequently, we recommend you to have your vehicle inspected.

Brake system
The service brake is divided into two brake
circuits. And your vehicle is equipped with
power brakes. If one brake circuit fails, the
other is available to stop the vehicle. If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. In these situations,
even if the brake pedal moves down to the
very end of its possible stroke or resists being
depressed, keep depressing the brake pedal down harder and further than usual; stop
driving as soon as possible and have the
brake system repaired.
WARNINGl Do not turn off the engine while your ve-
hicle is in motion. If you turn off the en-
gine while driving, the power assistance for the braking system will stop working
and your brakes will not work effectively.
l If the power assist is lost or if either brake
hydraulic system stops working properly, have your vehicle checked immediately.
Warning display
The brake warning lamp illuminates to indi-
cate a fault in the braking system. A warning
is also displayed on the multi-information display. Refer to “Brake warning lamp” on page 5-45 and “Brake warning display” on
page 5-46.
When brakes are wet
Check the brake system while driving at a
low speed immediately after starting, espe- cially when the brakes are wet, to confirmthey work normally.
A film of water can be formed on the brake
discs and prevent normal braking after driv-
ing in heavy rain or through large puddles, or after the vehicle is washed. If this occurs, dry
the brakes out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake pedal.
When driving downhill
It is important to take advantage of the en-
gine braking by shifting to a lower shift posi- tion while driving on steep downhill roads in order to prevent the brakes from overheating.
WARNINGl Do not leave any objects near the brake
pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; do- ing so could prevent the full pedal stroke
that would be necessary in an emergency. Make sure that the pedal can be operatedfreely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.Brake pad
l Avoid hard braking situations.
New brakes need to be broken-in by
moderate use for the first 200 km (124 miles).
l The disc brakes are provided with a
warning device which emits a shrieking
metallic sound while braking if the brake pads have reached their wear limit. Ifyou hear this sound, have the brake padsreplaced immediately.
WARNINGl Driving with worn brake pads will make
it harder to stop, and can cause an acci-
dent.Hill start assist*

The hill start assist makes it easy to start offon a steep uphill slope by preventing the ve-
hicle from moving backwards. It keeps the
braking force for about 2 seconds when you move your foot from the brake pedal to the
accelerator pedal.

2.Cover the end of the jack bar (C) with
cloth and use it to remove the lid from the rear bumper.
3. Use the wheel nut wrench (D) to firmly
attach the towing hook.
4. Always attach the tow rope to the towing
hook. Otherwise, the instructions are the
same as for “When being towed by an- other vehicle”.
5. When finished towing, remove the tow-
ing hook, and stow it in the specified lo- cation.
Refer to “Tools, jack and tyre repair kit”
on page 8-06.
When installing the bumper lid, align the
hook with the cut out area on the vehi-
cle, and firmly insert.NOTEl Do not tow a vehicle heavier than your own

On a flooded road
l Avoid flooded roads. Water could enter
the brake discs, resulting in temporarily ineffective brakes. In such cases, lightly
depress the brake pedal to see if the
brakes operate properly. If they do not,
lightly depress the pedal several times while driving in order to dry the brake
pads.
l When driving in rain or on a road with
many puddles a layer of water may form
between the tyres and the road surface.
This reduces a tyre’s frictional resistance on the road, resulting in loss of steering
stability and braking capability.
To cope with this, observe the following items:
(a)Drive your vehicle at slow
speed. (b)Do not drive on worn tyres. (c)Always maintain the specified tyre inflation pressures.

NOTElThe washer fluid container serves the wind-
screen, rear window and headlamps (if soequipped).
During cold weather
To ensure proper operation of the washers at
low temperatures, use a fluid containing ananti-freezing agent.
Brake fluid/Clutch fluid*

The brake fluid and the clutch fluid share thereservoir tank.
To check the fluid level
The fluid level must be between the “MAX” and “MIN” marks on the reservoir.
The fluid level is monitored by a float. When
the fluid level falls below the “MIN” mark, the brake fluid warning lamp lights up.The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads, but this does not indicate any ab-
normality.
The fluid in the master cylinder should be checked when doing other work under thebonnet. The brake system should also be checked for leakage at the same time.
If the fluid level falls markedly in a short length of time, it indicates leaks from the
brake system.
If this occurs, we recommend you to have the
vehicle checked.
Fluid type
Use brake fluid conforming to DOT3 or DOT4 from a sealed container. The brake
fluid is hygroscopic. Too much moisture in the brake fluid will adversely affect the brake
system, reducing the performance.
CAUTIONl Take care in handling brake fluid as it is
harmful to the eyes, may irritate your skin
and also damage painted surfaces.CAUTIONl Use only the specified brake fluid.
Do not mix or add different brands of brake fluid to prevent chemical reactions.
Do not let any petroleum-based fluid touch, mix with, or get into the brake fluid.
This will damage the seals.
l Keep the reservoir tank cap closed to pre-
vent the brake fluid from deteriorating ex- cept maintenance.
l Clean the filler cap before removing and
close the cap securely after maintenance.Battery

The condition of the battery is very important
for quick starting and to keep the vehicle’s electrical system working properly. Regularinspection and care are especially importantin cold weather.
NOTEl After replacing the battery, the electronic
control system data for the automatic trans- mission, etc., will be erased. As a result,
shift shocks may occur.
Shift shocks will become smoother after sev-
eral changes in speed.
