thoroughly reading this Owner’s Manual, you will gain an
understanding of the many features that are included in the
ECLIPSE/ECLIPSE SPYDER. The Owner’s Manual contains
descriptions and illustrations that will assist in the operation
and maintenance of your vehicle.
Your Authorized Mitsubishi Motors Dealer will be happy to
assist you with any further questions you may have regarding
the operation of your vehicle.
Please note that this manual applies to all ECLIPSE/ECLIPSE
SPYDER models and explains all features including options.
Some features explained in this manual may not be installed on
your vehicle.

resale. The next owner will appreciate having access to the
information contained here.
This manual includes instructions for standard and optional
equipment available at the time of printing. Mitsubishi Motors

Oil pressure warning light
Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine, then check the
engine oil level.
If the light comes on while the engine oil level is normal, have the
system checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair
facility of your choice as soon as possible.P. 3 - 1 1 4

Brake warning light
If this light comes on while driving, check to see that the parking
brake is fully released.

If this light stays on after releasing the parking brake, stop and check
the brake fluid level.

If the brake fluid level is correct, there may be a system malfunction.
Avoid hard braking and high speeds, and contact an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assis-

Idle the engine until the selector lever position indicator stops flash-
ing. If the indicator does not go off, have the system checked at an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice

Engine malfunction indicator
(“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check
engine light”)
Although your vehicle will usually be drivable and not need towing,
have the engine system checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors
dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible. If the
vehicle is not drivable, contact emergency roadside assistance at 1-
888-648-7820 (for vehicles sold in U.S.A.) or 1-888-576-4878 (for
vehicles sold in Canada), an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer, or

Anti-lock braking system warning light
When this light comes on, the anti-lock braking system is not func-
tioning and only the ordinary braking system is functioning.

Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine.
Test the system as described on page 3-83.

If the light does not go out after the test, or if it comes on again, we
recommend that you have the system checked at an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as

SRS warning light
It is not necessary to stop the vehicle immediately, but we recommend
that you have the air bag and the pre-tensioner seat belt system
checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon as possi-

Selector lever position indicator in the instru-
ment cluster flashes slowly
(once per second) (if so equipped)
Have the automatic transaxle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.P. 3 - 7 5

ASC OFF indicator
Park your vehicle in a safe place and turn off the engine.
Restart the engine and check to see if the indicator comes on again.

If the indicator does not go out, or if it comes on again, have your
vehicle inspected at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a
repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

When this indicator comes on, the active stability control is not func-
tioning and normal operation of the vehicle will not be affected.P. 3 - 8 8
Tire pressure monitoring system warning light
If the warning light comes on, you should stop and adjust the tires to
the proper inflation pressure as soon as possible.
(See “Tire inflation pressures” on page 7-23.)
Once adjustments have been made, the warning light will go off after
a few minutes of driving.

If the warning light blinks for approximately 1 minute and then
remains continuously illuminated, the system is not operating prop-
erly. If the system returns to normal, the warning light will go off. If
the warning light does not go off, have the vehicle inspected at an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.P. 3 - 9 8

When attempting to rock your vehicle out of a stuck position, be sure that no one is near the vehicle. The rocking
motion may cause the vehicle to suddenly lurch forward or backward, possibly injuring bystanders.
Avoid revving the engine or spinning the wheels. Prolonged efforts to free a stuck vehicle may result in overheating
and transaxle failure.
If the vehicle remains stuck after several rocking attempts, have a towing service pull the vehicle out.

1Fuel selection

Your vehicle is designed to use unleaded gasoline only. It is
equipped with a fuel filler tube especially designed to accept
only a small diameter unleaded gasoline dispensing nozzle. Gasoline detergent additivesIn the United States, fuel suppliers are required by law to add
detergents to their gasoline to minimize fuel-injector fouling
and minimize intake-valve deposits. Detergent gasoline helps
keep your engine in tune and your emission-control system
working properly.
Octane requirement2.4 liter engine modelYour vehicle is designed to operate on unleaded gasoline hav-
ing a minimum octane number of 87 [(MON+RON)/2], or 91
RON.3.8 liter engine modelUnleaded gasoline having an octane number of 87
[(MON+RON)/2] or 91 RON may be used, but Mitsubishi
Motors Corporation recommends that your vehicle be operated
on premium grade unleaded gasoline having a minimum octane
number of 91 [(MON+RON)/2], or 95 RON. For maximum
performance, premium gasoline is recommended.
MON: Motor Octane Number
RON: Research Octane Number Oxygenated gasoline Gasoline sold at some service stations contains oxygenates
such as ethanol and MTBE, although the oxygenates may not
be identified by those names. Oxygenates are required in some
areas of the country. Such fuel can be used in your vehicle.
WA R N I N G
!
Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive. You
could be burned, seriously injured or killed when
handling it. Whenever you refuel your vehicle, stop
the engine and keep flames, sparks, and smoking
materials away from the vehicle. Always handle fuel
in well-ventilated outdoor areas.
CAUTION
!
Using leaded gasoline in your vehicle will damage
the engine, catalytic converter, and the oxygen sen-
sors. Also, using leaded gasoline is illegal, and will
void your warranty coverage of the engine, catalytic
converter, and oxygen sensors.
