The rear window defogger can be used when the engine is running.The indicator light (A) will come on when you press the electric rear window defogger switch. Electric current will flow through theheating wires on the rear window to help clear away moisture or frost. After approximately 15 to 20 minutes of operation, the system will shut off automati- cally. To switch the defogger OFF before 15 to20 minutes have passed, press the switch again. The indicator light will go out and the defogger will turn off.
If you need the defogger for more than 15 to 20 minutes, press the switch again. This will add 15 to 20 more minutes.
NOTE
 Do not use the wipers when the windshield is dry. This could scratch the glass and wear the wiper blades prematurely.  Before using the wipers in cold weather, check to be sure that the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield or rear window. Using the wipers while the blades are frozencould cause the wiper motor to burn out.  If the moving wipers become blocked part- way through a sweep by ice or other deposits on the glass, the wipers may temporarily stop operating to prevent the motor from over-heating. In this case, park the vehicle in a safe place, turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position or put the operation mode inOFF, and then remove the ice or other depos- its. Because the wipers will start operating againafter the wiper motor cools down, check that the wipers operate before using them.  Avoid using the washer for more than 20 sec- onds at a time. Do not operate the washer when the washer fluid reservoir is empty orthe pump may fail.  During cold weather, add a recommended washer solution that will not freeze in the washer fluid reservoir. Otherwise the washer may not work or may be damaged.  Replace the wiper blades when they are worn. Use the proper size replacement blades. CAUTION The rear window defogger is not designed to melt snow. Remove any snow manually before using the rear window defogger. Use the rear window defogger only after the engine has started and is running. Be sure to turn the defogger switch off immediatelyafter the window is clear to save on battery power. Do not place stickers, tape, or other items that are attached with adhesive over the grid wires on the rear window. When cleaning the inside rear window, use a soft cloth and wipe lightly over the gridwires.NOTE
 The mist can also be removed from the out- side rearview mirrors when the rear windowdefogger switch is pressed. (Refer to “Door mirror heater” on page 5-55.)

They are not designed to maneuver or corner at the same speed on pavement as con- ventional 2-wheel drive passenger cars anymore than low-slung sports cars are designed
to perform satisfactorily in off-road condi- tions. Always drive safely and steer the vehicle carefully. Avoid operating the vehicle in amanner that might require sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers. As with other vehicles of this type, failure to operate this vehicle cor-rectly can result in loss of control or vehicle rollover. In a rollover crash, an unbelted person is sig-nificantly more likely to die than a personwearing a seat belt. For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always check for the following:  Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly (with children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors and the liftgate are locked.  Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while keeping good visibility, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls. Checkthe instrument panel indicators and multi- information display for any possible prob- lem. Similarly, the front passenger seat should also be moved as far back as possible.  Make sure that infants and small children are properly restrained in accordance with all laws and regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode, and set the blower switch on high. You shouldbe able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. Refer to “Defrosting or defogging (wind-shield, door windows)” on page 7-13, 7-22. Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails,glass, or other objects stuck in the tread. Look for any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Check the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires(including spare tire) for proper pressure. Replace your tires before they are heavily worn out.As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk of damage to the tire inflation pressure sensorswhen the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, only, be performed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turn

Avoid jerky or sudden maneuvers. Signal well in advance. Towing a trailer puts additional burden on the engine and transaxle, which may cause over- heating. Following are some suggestions to reduce overheating: When towing at high altitudes, engine coolant and automatic transaxle fluid will overheat at a lower temperature than at normal altitudes.If you turn your engine off immediately after towing at high altitude on steep uphill grades, your vehicle may show signs similar to over-heating. How- ever, you may want to shift the selector leverto the 3rd or a lower position, under heavy loads or hilly conditions. that the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. Avoid parking on a hill with a trailer, but if it cannot be avoided, do so only after performing the following: 1. Apply the brakes and keep them applied. 2. Have someone place chocks or blocks under both the vehicle and trailer wheels. 3. When the chocks or blocks are in place,release your brakes slowly until the chocks or blocks absorb the load. 4. Apply the parking brake firmly.5. Set the selector lever to the “P” (PARK)position and turn off the engine.
When restarting out after parking on a hill: 1. Check that the selector lever is set to the “P” (PARK) position. 2. Start the engine. Be sure to keep the brakepedal depressed. 3. If you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge after the engine has been started by using jumper cables, the engine may misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking systemwarning light to blink on and off. This is only due to the low battery voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap-pens, fully charge the battery and ensure thecharging system is operating properly.

When the engine is overheating, the informa-tion screen in the multi-information display will be interrupted and the engine coolant temperature warning display will appear. Also “ ” will blink. If these warnings are displayed: 1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Turn on the hazard warning flashers.2. With the engine still running, carefully raise the engine hood to vent the engine compartment.
3. Check that the cooling fan is running. If the fan is not turning, stop the engine immediately and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facil-ity of your choice for assistance. 4. If you see steam or spray coming from under the hood, turn off the engine. 5. If you do not see steam or spray comingfrom under the hood, leave the engine on until the high coolant temperature warn- ing goes off. After the high coolant tem-perature warning has gone off, you can start driving again. If the high coolant temperature warning stays on, turn off theengine.
Charging the battery by using an external battery charger
WA R N I N G Always remove the battery from your vehicle when the battery is charged by anexternal battery charger. Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames away from the battery because the battery could explode. Keep your work area well vented when charging or using the battery in an enclosed space. Remove all the caps before charging the battery. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolytecomes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. Ifelectrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and get prompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren.

5. Remove the wheel nuts with the wheel nut wrench, then take the wheel off.
6. Clean out any mud, etc. on the hub sur- face (F), hub bolts (G) or in the installa- tion holes (H) in the wheel, and then mount the spare tire.
7. Turn the wheel nut clockwise by hand to initially tighten them. Temporarily tighten the wheel nuts by hand until the flange parts of the wheelnuts make light contact with the wheel and the wheel is not loose.
WA R N I N G Stop jacking up the vehicle as soon as the tire is raised off the ground. It is danger- ous to raise the vehicle any higher. Do not get under your vehicle while using the jack. Do not bump the raised vehicle or leave it sitting on the jack for a long time. Both are very dangerous. Do not use a jack except the one that came with your vehicle. The jack should not be used for any pur- pose other than to change a tire. No one should be in your vehicle when using the jack. Do not start or run the engine while your vehicle is on the jack. Do not turn the raised wheel. The tires that are still on the ground could turn and make your vehicle fall off the jack.CAUTION Handle the wheel carefully when changing the tire, to avoid scratching the wheel sur- face.
WA R N I N G Mount the spare tire with the valve stem (I) facing outward. If you cannot see the valve stem (I), you have installed the wheel backwards.Operating the vehicle with the spare tire installed backwards can cause vehicle damage and result in an accident.
NOTE
 Flange nuts can be temporarily used on the compact spare tire as shown in the illustra- tion, but return to the original wheel and tire as soon as possible.

 When driving on a road covered with snow or ice, use snow tires. Tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle. Theremay be state or local regulations about using snow tires. Always check the regu- lations in your local area before usingthem. Refer to “Snow tires” on page 9-18 and “Tire chains” on page 9-18.  Drive slowly. Do not make sudden starts or stops, sharp turns, or slam on thebrakes.  Allow extra distance between your vehi- cle and the vehicle in front of you, andavoid sudden braking.  If a skid occurs when the accelerator pedal is depressed, take your foot off thepedal. Steer gently in the direction of the skid.  Your vehicle is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). Hold the brake pedal down firmly and keep it depressed. Do not pump the brake pedal which willresult in reduced braking performance.  After parking on snowy or icy roads, it may be difficult to move your vehicle dueto the brake being frozen. Depress the accelerator pedal little by little to move the vehicle when safe to do so.

WA R N I N G When trying to rock your vehicle out of a stuck position, make sure that there are no people nearby. The rocking motion can make your vehicle suddenly lurch forward or backward, and injure any bystanders.
On wet roads
CAUTION Avoid flooded roads. Water is often deeper than it looks, and you could be seriously hurt by driving into flood water. When driving in rain, on water-covered roads, or through a car wash, water could getinto the brake discs and make them fail tem- porarily. In such cases, lightly press the brake pedal to see if they are working prop-erly. If they are not, press the pedal lightly several times while driving to dry the brake pads or linings, then check them again. When driving in rain, a layer of water may form between the tires and the road surface(hydroplaning). This loosens your tires’ grip on the road, making it difficult to steer or brake properly. When driving on a wet road:• Drive your vehicle at a safe speed.• Do not drive on worn tires.• Always keep the tires at the correct infla- tion pressures.
On snowy or icy roads
CAUTION Do not depress the accelerator pedal rapidly. The vehicle could start moving when it breaks free from the ice, possibly resulting in an accident.
On a bumpy or rutted road
CAUTION Driving on bumpy, rutted roads or over pot- holes can damage the tires and wheels. Wheels with low-profile tires or under- inflated tires are especially at risk for dam-age.

destroy the emission-control effectiveness of the converter. Normally, the catalytic converter does not require maintenance. However, it is important to keep the engine properly tuned for the con-verter to continue to work properly. To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type recommended in “Fuel selection” on page 3-2.
 Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.  Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.Refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 8-2.  Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such aswhen performing diagnostic tests.  Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviouslymalfunctioning.  To prevent damage to the catalytic con- verter from unburned gas, do not race theengine when turning off the ignition switch.  Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is noticeably low, or the engine has a malfunction such as with the ignition, etc. If you
are not able to stop
driving immediately, slow down and drive for only a short time. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.
 In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor may indicate severe and abnormal catalytic converter overheating. If this occurs, stopin a safe place, shut the engine off and let the vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for service.
