Filling the fuel tank

MMT is a manganese-containing metallic additive that is blended into some gasolines to increase the octane number. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation recommends using gaso-lines without MMT. Use of gasolines blended with MMT may adversely affect performance, and cause themalfunction indicator on your instrumentpanel to come on. If this happens, contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance. Your vehicle may have been designed to sat- isfy California’s low-emission regulationsbased on clean-burning low-sulfur gasoline. Gasoline sold in parts of the country other than California is allowed to have a highersulfur content. Using such gasoline could adversely affect the vehicle’s catalytic con- verter and cause the engine malfunction indi-cator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) to come on. Illumina- tion of this indicator while using high-sulfurgasoline does not necessarily mean the vehi- cle’s emission-control system is malfunction- ing. Your authorized Mitsubishi Motors
dealer may suggest using a different, lower- sulfur brand of unleaded gasoline to deter- mine if the problem is fuel-related.

NOTE
Poor-quality gasoline can cause problems such as hard starting, stalling during idling, abnormal engine noise, and poor accelera- tion. If you experience any of these prob-lems, try using a different brand of gasoline. If the engine malfunction indicator (“SER- VICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check enginelight”) flashes, have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible by the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facilityof your choice. Repeatedly driving short distances at low speeds can cause deposits to form in the fuel system and engine, resulting in hard starting and poor acceleration. If these problemsoccur, you are advised to add a detergent additive to the gasoline when you refuel the vehicle. The additive will remove the depos-its, thereby returning the engine to a normal condition. Be sure to use a Mitsubishi Motors Genuine cleaning additive. Using anunsuitable additive could make an engine malfunction. For details, please contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.
Filling the fuel tank
WA R N I N G When handling fuel, comply with the safety regulations displayed by garages and filling stations. Gasoline is highly flammable and explo- sive. You could be burned, seriously injured or killed when handling it. Whenrefueling your vehicle, always turn the engine off and keep away from flames, sparks, and smoking materials. Alwayshandle fuel in well-ventilated outdoor areas. Before removing the fuel tank filler cap, be sure to get rid of your body’s static electricity by touching a metal part of thevehicle or fuel pump. Any static electricity on your body could create a spark that ignites fuel vapor. Perform the whole refueling process (opening the fuel tank filler door, remov-ing the fuel cap, etc.) by yourself; do not let any other person near the fuel tank filler. If you allowed a person to help youand that person was carrying static elec- tricity, fuel vapor could be ignited. Do not move away from the fuel tank filler until refueling is finished. If you movedaway and did something else (for example, sitting on a seat) part-way through the refueling process, you could pick up afresh charge of static electricity.

3. Open the fuel tank filler pipe by slowly turning the fuel tank filler cap counter- clockwise.
4. Fueling correctly depends mainly on cor- rect handling of the fuel filler nozzle. Do not tilt the nozzle. Insert the nozzle in thefuel tank filler port as far as it goes. 5. When the nozzle stops automatically, do not add more fuel.
Be careful not to inhale fuel vapor. Fuel contains toxic substances. Keep the doors and windows closed while refueling the vehicle. If they were open,fuel vapor could get into the cabin.

1- Remove 2- CloseWA R N I N G Since the fuel system may be under pres- sure, remove the fuel tank filler cap slowly. This relieves any pressure or vac- uum that might have built up in the fueltank. If the cap is venting vapor or if you hear a hissing sound, wait until the sound stops before removing the cap. Otherwise,fuel may spray out, injuring you or others.
NOTE
While filling with fuel, store the fuel cap in the cap holder (A) or hang it on the hook (B) located on the inside of the fuel tank filler door.CAUTION Your vehicle can only be operated using unleaded gasoline. Serious engine and cata- lytic converter damage will result if leadedgasoline is filled into these vehicles, and consequently, this must never be attempted.

The Telematics Control Unit (TCU) uses amobile communication network to transmitnotifications (SOS emergency assist/Informa- tion assist) in case of emergency and vehicle information. The TCU also allows you to useyour smartphone to operate some vehicle functions remotely.
SOS emergency assist If a collision is detected or you press the SOS switch (A), the system automaticallytransmits the vehicle information to an emergency call center, and will call the emergency call center. If necessary, thetelephone call is forwarded to a PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point).
CAUTION To avoid fuel spillage and overfilling, do not “top-off” the fuel tank. Spilled fuel could discolor, stain, or crack the vehicle’s paint- work. If fuel spills on the paintwork, wipe it off with a soft cloth.WA R N I N G Make sure the fuel tank filler cap is securely closed. If the fuel cap is loose, fuel could leak, resulting in a fire.CAUTION If you need to replace the fuel tank filler cap, use only a cap specified for your model vehi- cle.

Always tighten the fuel tank filler cap until you hear at least 3 clicks.The indicator will go off after several driving cycles. However, you can add to the future perfor- mance and economy of your vehicle by observing the follow
ing precautions during
the first 300 miles (500 km).Drive your vehicle at moderate speeds during the break-in period. Avoid revving the engine. Avoid rough driving such as sudden starts, sudden acceleration, prolonged high- speed driving and sudden braking. These actions would have a detrimental effect onthe engine and lead to increased fuel andoil consumption; this could ultimately result in the malfunction of engine com- ponents. Be particularly careful to avoidfull acceleration while in low shift posi- tion (low gears). Do not overload the vehicle. Stay within the seating capacity. This vehicle is equipped with an event datarecorder (EDR).The main purpose of an EDR is to record, in certain crash or near crash-like situations,
such as an airbag deployment or hitting a road obstacle, data that will assist in under- standing how a vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is designed to record data related tovehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period of time, typically 30 seconds or less. The EDR in this vehicle is designed to record such data as: How various systems in your vehicle were operating; Whether or not the driver and front pas- senger safety belts were buckled/fastened; How far (if at all) the driver was depress- ing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and, How fast the vehicle was traveling.
These data can help provide a better under- standing of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur.
To read data recorded by an EDR, special equipment is required, and access to the vehi- cle or the EDR is needed. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, other parties, such aslaw enforcement, that have the special equip- ment, can read the information if they have access to the vehicle or the EDR.

EDR data are recorded by your vehicle only if a non-trivial crash situation occurs; no data are recorded by the EDR under normal driv- ing conditions and no personal data (e.g., name, gender, age, and crash location) arerecorded. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, could combine the EDR data with the type of personally identifyingdata routinely acquired during a crash inves- tigation.

This indicator is a part of the onboard diag- nostic (OBD) system which monitors the emissions, engine contro
l system or continu-
ously variable transmission (CVT) control system. If a problem is detected in one of these systems, this indicator illuminates orflashes. When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position or the operation mode is put in ON, this indicator normally comes onand goes off after the engine has started. This indicator will come on if the fuel tank filler cap is not properly tightened. If this
indicator comes on and stays on after refuel- ing, stop the engine an
d check that the cap is
properly tightened. (Turn the cap clockwise until you hear clicking sounds.)If this indicator does not go off after several seconds or lights up while driving, have the system checked as soon as possible at anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
CAUTION When the warning light remains on or does not come on, there is the possibility that the parking brake cannot be operated or released. Immediately contact the nearest authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Whenthe warning light comes on during driving, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe place, and contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motorsdealer. If you inevitably have to park, park the vehicle on level and stable ground, shift the selector lever in “P” (PARK) positionand place chocks or blocks.
Engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”)
CAUTION Driving for a long time with the engine mal- function indicator on may cause more dam- age to the emission control system. This could also affect fuel economy and drivabil-ity. If this indicator does not come on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” posi- tion or the operation mode is put in ON, have the system checked at an authorizedMitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
If the engine malfunction indicator comes on while the engine is running, avoid driving at high speeds. During vehicle operation with the indicator on, the vehicle may not accelerate when youdepress the accelerator pedal. When the vehicle is stationary with the indi- cator on, you must depress the brake pedalmore firmly than usual since the engine idling speed is higher than usual and a vehi- cle with continuously variable transmission(CVT) has a stronger tendency to creep for- ward.NOTE
Do not disconnect the battery cable when the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICEENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) is on. The engine electronic control module storescritical OBD information (especially exhaust emission data), which may be lost if the bat- tery cable is disconnected while the enginemalfunction indicator is on. This will make it difficult to diagnose the cause of future prob- lems.CAUTION

Your vehicle has been designed for both nor- mal and occasional off-road use. However,avoid driving the vehicle through areas where the tires may get stuck in deep sand or mud as your vehicle is designed primarily for use onpavement, unlike a conventional off-road vehicle. Keep in mind that 2-wh
eel drive vehicles are
less capable than 4-wheel drive vehicles for driving on muddy, slippery, wet or snow-cov- ered roads. Utility vehicles have higher ground clearance and a narrower track, which enables them to perform in a wide variety of off-road situa- tions. Because of the higher ground clear-ance, these vehicles have a higher center of gravity, which makes them handle differently than ordinary vehicles when driving on pave-ment. They are not designed to maneuver or corner at the same speed on pavement as con- ventional 2-wheel drive passenger cars anymore than low-slung sports cars are designed
to perform satisfactorily in off-road condi- tions. Always drive safely and steer the vehicle carefully. Avoid operating the vehicle in amanner that might require sharp turns or abrupt maneuvers. As with other vehicles of this type, failure to operate this vehicle cor-rectly can result in loss of control or vehicle rollover. In a rollover crash, an unbelted person is sig-nificantly more likely to die than a personwearing a seat belt. Before starting the vehi- cle, always make certain that you and all your passengers are properly wearing their seatbelts (with children in the rear seat, in appro- priate restraints).

Whenever accelerating from a stop, always accelerate slowly and smoothly. When parked for even a short period, do not idle the engine. Shut it off. Plan your trips to avoid unnecessary stops.
Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. When driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle on highways or dry improved roads, set thedrive mode to “AUTO”. Always obey applicable laws and regula- tions. Be a polite and alert driver. Always leave room for unexpected events, such as sudden braking. If you plan to drive in another country, obey their vehicle registration laws and make sure you will be able to get the rightfuel.

Check the battery. At the same time, check the terminals and wiring. Duringextremely cold weather, the battery will not be as strong. Also, the battery power level may drop because more power isused for cold starting and driving. Before driving the vehicle, check to see if the engine runs at the proper speed and ifthe headlights are as bright as normally. Charge or replace the battery if necessary. During extreme cold weather, it is possi-ble that a very low battery could freeze.
Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-up time to distribute oil to all cylinders. Then drive your vehicle slowly.Stay at low speeds at first so that the transaxle, transfer case and rear axle oil have time to spread to all lubricationpoints. Check the engine antifreeze. If there is not enough coolant because of aleak or from engine overheating, addMitsubishi Motors Genuine Super Long Life Coolant Premium or equivalent. Please read this section in conjunctionwith the “Engine coolant” on page 9-7.

All the parts of the brake system are criticalto safety. Have the vehicle serviced by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice at regular inter-vals according to the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”.
Check the brake system while driving at a low speed immediately after starting, espe-cially when the brakes are wet, to confirm they work normally. A film of water can be formed on the brakediscs and prevent normal braking after driv- ing in heavy rain or through large puddles, or after the vehicle is wash
ed. If this occurs, dry
the brakes out by driving slowly while lightlydepressing the brake pedal. On snowy roads, ice can form on the braking system, making the brakes less effective. While driving in such conditions, pay close attention to surrounding vehicles and to thecondition of the road surface. From time to time, lightly depress the brake pedal and check how effective the brakes are. It is important to take advantage of the engine braking by downshifting while driving onsteep downhill roads in order to prevent the brakes from overheating.

This placard shows the maximum number of occupants permitted to ride in your vehicle aswell as “the combined weight of occupants and cargo” (A), which is called the vehicle capacity weight. The weight of any non-fac-tory installed options, as well as the tongue weight of a trailer being towed and roof load is included in the definition of “cargo” whendetermining the vehicle capacity weight. Thisplacard also tells you the size and recom- mended inflation pressure for the original equipment tires on your vehicle. For moreinformation, refer to “Tires” on page 9-12.

Towing a trailer will adversely affect your vehicle’s handling, performance, braking,durability and driving economy (fuel con- sumption, etc.). If you do tow a trailer with this vehicle, besure to use proper equipment and cautious steering and braking for safe driving.
Never exceed the vehicle capacity weight, maximum trailer weight (A), maximum tongue weight (B) and Gross Axle WeightRating (GAWR). The vehicle capacity weight is printed on the tire and loading information placard as “com- bined weight of occupants and cargo”.The weight includes the weight of all occu- pants and the total weight it can carry. For more information, refer to “Tire and load-ing information placard” on page 6-7.
CAUTION Do not load luggage directly onto the roof. Use a roof carrier th
at properly fits your
vehicle. For installation, refer to the instruction man- ual provided with the roof carrier. Place the luggage on the carrier so that its weight is distributed evenly with the heaviestitems on the bottom. Do not load items that are wider than the roof carrier. Before driving and after traveling a short dis- tance, always check the load to make sure it is securely fastened to the roof carrier.Stop the vehicle periodically and check that the load remains secure. If the load is not secure, it could fall from the vehicle anddamage your vehicle, another vehicle or cre- ate a road hazard.NOTE
To prevent wind noise or reduction in gas mileage, remove the roof carrier when not in use. Before using an automatic car wash, check with the attendant to determine if the roof carrier should be removed. Economy The wrong tire pressure can cause uneven wear patterns in the tire tread. These abnormal wear patterns will reduce thetread life, and the tire will have to be replaced sooner. Too little pressure also makes it harder forthe tire to roll, and this uses up more fuel. Ride comfort and vehicle stability The superior riding experience built intoyour vehicle partly depends on the correcttire pressure. Too much pressure gives an uncomfortable and jarring ride. Too little pressure feels as if your vehicle is slow torespond. Unequal tire pressures can make steering your vehicle uneven and unpredictable.
The tire pressure for your vehicle under nor- mal driving conditions is listed on the placard attached to the driver’s door sill. (Refer to “Tire and loading information plac-ard” on page 11-3.) The recommended infl
ation pressures under
normal driving conditions should be used forthe tires listed below.
Tire pressures should be checked, and adjusted if necessary, at least once a month. Pressures should be checked more often whenever weather temperatures changeseverely, because tire pressures change with outdoor temperatures. The pressures listed are always “cold inflation pressure”.Cold inflation pressure is measured after the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours or is driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km)after having been parked for three hours.Cold inflation pressure must not go above the maximum values molded into the tire side- wall. After driving several miles, your tireinflation pressure may increase 2 to 6 psi (14 to 41 kPa) from the cold inflation pressure. Do not let air out of the tires to get back to thespecified cold pressure, or your tires will be too low. Check your tires each time you refuel. If onetire looks lower than the others, check the pressure for all of them. You should also take the following safety pre-cautions:
Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. (See the tire and load- ing information placard attached to the driver’s door sill.) Stay within the recommended load limits. Make sure that the weight of any load in your vehicle is evenly distributed. Drive at safe speeds. After filling your tires to the correct pres- sure, check them for damage and airleaks. Be sure to reinstall the caps on thevalve stems.

On all-wheel drive vehicles, always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Usingtires that differ in size, type, brand or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting in possible damage to the driving system. Further, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possi-bly leading to oil leakage, component sei- zure, or other serious problems.
