1-2 General information
1Fuel selection
N00301000824
Your vehicle is designed to use unleaded gasoline only. It is
equipped with a fuel filler tube especially designed to accept
only a small diameter unleaded gasoline dispensing nozzle. Gasoline detergent additivesIn the United States, fuel suppliers are required by law to add
detergents to their gasoline to minimize fuel-injector fouling
and minimize intake-valve deposits. Detergent gasoline helps
keep your engine in tune and your emission-control system
working properly.
Octane requirementUnleaded gasoline having an octane number of 87
[(MON+RON)/2] or 91 RON may be used, though it recom-
mended your vehicle be operated on premium grade unleaded
gasoline having a minimum octane number of 91
[(MON+RON)/2], or 95 RON. To get maximum performance,
premium gasoline is recommended.
MON: Motor Octane Number
RON: Research Octane Number Oxygenated gasoline Gasoline sold at some service stations contains oxygenates
such as ethanol and MTBE, although the oxygenates may not
be identified by those names. Oxygenates are required in some
areas of the country. Such fuel can be used in your vehicle.Ethanol (Gasohol) A mixture of up to 10 % ethanol (grain alcohol) and 90 %
unleaded gasoline may be used in your vehicle, provided the
octane number is at least as high as that recommended for
unleaded gasoline. Methanol Do not operate your vehicle on gasoline containing methanol
(wood alcohol). Using this type of alcohol could adversely
affect the vehicle’s performance and damage critical parts of
the vehicle’s fuel system.
WA R N I N G
!Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive. You
could be burned, seriously injured or killed when
handling it. Whenever you refuel your vehicle, stop
the engine and keep flames, sparks, and smoking
materials away from the vehicle. Always handle fuel
in well-ventilated outdoor areas.
CAUTION
!Using leaded gasoline in your vehicle will damage
the engine, catalytic converter, and the oxygen sen-
sors. Also, using leaded gasoline is illegal, and will
void your warranty coverage of the engine, catalytic
converter, and oxygen sensors.

Folding the seatbacks forward
N00402900111
The rear seatbacks can be folded forward to provide additional
luggage compartment space.
Pull the left and/or right release knobs, and fold the rear seat-
backs forward.NOTEConfirm that the seatback locks securely when it is
returned.
CAUTION
!Switch off the seat heaters when not in use. Operate
the heaters at high for quick heating. After the seat
has become warm, set the heater to low to keep it
warm. Slight variations in the seat temperature may
be felt while using the heated seats. This is caused by
the operation of the heater’s internal thermostat and
does not indicate a malfunction.
If the following types of persons use the heated seats,
they might become too hot or receive minor burns
(red skin, heat blisters, etc.):
• Children, elderly persons, ill persons
• Person with sensitive skin
• Excessively fatigued persons
• Persons under the influence of alcohol or sleep-
inducing medication (cold medicine, etc.)
Do not place heavy objects on the seat or stick pins,
needles, or other pointed objects into it.Do not use a blanket, cushion, or other material with
high heat insulation properties on the seat while
using the heater; doing so could cause the heater ele-
ment to overheat. When cleaning the seat, do not use benzene, gaso-
line, alcohol, or other organic solvents; doing so
could damage not only the surface of the seat, but
also the heater. If water or any other liquid is spilled on the seat,
allow it to dry thoroughly before attempting to use
the heater. Turn the heater off immediately if it
appears to be malfunctioning during use.

Trailer brakesMitsubishi recommends that any trailer having a total weight
of 1,500 lbs (680 kg) or more be equipped with its own electric
or surge-type brakes.
If you choose electric brakes, be sure they are electrically actu-
ated. Do not attempt to tap into your vehicle’s hydraulic sys-
tem. No matter how successful it may seem, any attempt to
attach trailer brakes to your vehicle’s hydraulic system will
lower braking effectiveness and create a potential hazard.Trailer lightsTrailer lights and equipment must comply with federal, state,
and local regulations. Check with your local recreational vehi-
cle dealer for the requirements in your area, and use only
equipment designed for your vehicle.
Since lighting and wiring vary by trailer type and brand, you
should have a qualified technician install a suitable connector
between the vehicle and the trailer. Improper equipment or
installation can cause damage to your vehicle’s electrical sys-
tem and affect your vehicle warranty.Additional trailer equipmentMany states and Canadian provinces require special outside
mirrors when towing a trailer. Even if they do not, you should
install special mirrors if you cannot clearly see behind you, or
if the trailer creates a blind spot.
Ask your trailer sales or rental agency if any other items are
recommended or required for your towing situation.
Operating hints
Driver preparationTowing a trailer requires a certain amount of experience.
Before setting out for the open road, you’ll want to get to know
your trailer. Acquaint yourself with the feel of handling and
braking with the added weight of the trailer. And always keep
in mind that the vehicle you are driving is now a good deal
longer and not nearly as responsive as your vehicle is without a
trailer.
WA R N I N G
!If you have a rear window open and you tow a
trailer with your vehicle, carbon monoxide gas
which you cannot see or smell could come into your
vehicle. It can cause unconsciousness or death. Refer
to “Exhaust system” on page 7-34.
To maximize your safety when towing a trailer:
• Have your exhaust system inspected for leaks, and
make necessary repairs before starting on your
trip.
• Keep the rear windows closed.
• If exhaust does come into your vehicle through a
window or another opening, drive with your front,
main heating or cooling system on and with the
blower on any speed. This will bring fresh, outside
air into your vehicle. Do not use recirculation
because it only recirculates the air inside your
vehicle. Refer to “Air selection switch” on page 5-
8, 5-19.

Towing with rear wheels off the ground (Type B)Place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Turn the ignition key to the “ACC” position and secure the
steering wheel in a straight-ahead position with a rope or tie-
down strap. Never place the ignition key in the “LOCK” posi-
tion when towing.Towing with front wheels off the ground (Type C)Release the parking brake.
Place the selector lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.
Operation under adverse driving conditions
N00837200620
If your vehicle becomes stuck in sand, mud or
snow If your vehicle becomes stuck in snow, sand, or mud, it can
often be moved by a rocking motion. Move the selector lever
rhythmically between “Sports mode” and “R” (REVERSE)
position, while pressing lightly on the accelerator pedal.
Do not rev the engine or spin the wheels. Constant efforts to
free a stuck vehicle can cause overheating and transaxle fail-
ure. Let the engine idle for a few minutes to cool the transaxle
before trying again.
If your vehicle is still stuck after several rocking attempts, call
for a commercial tow truck service.
CAUTION
!Never tow an automatic transaxle vehicle with the
rear wheels up (and the front wheels on the ground)
(Type B) when the automatic transaxle fluid level is
low. This may cause serious and expensive damage
to the transaxle.
WA R N I N G
!To prevent entry of exhaust gas from the towing
vehicle, set your air selection switch to the recircula-
tion position.
WA R N I N G
!When trying to rock your vehicle out of a stuck posi-
tion, make sure that there are no people nearby. The
rocking motion can make your vehicle suddenly
lurch forward or backward, and injure any
bystanders.

Vehicle care and maintenance
7-3
7 Catalytic converter
N00937400421
The catalytic converter requires you to use unleaded fuel only.
Leaded gasoline will destroy the emission-control effective-
ness of the converter.
Normally, the catalytic converter does not require maintenance.
However, it is important to keep the engine properly tuned for
the converter to continue to work properly. To reduce the possibility of catalytic converter damage:
Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of rec-
ommended in “Fuel selection”.
Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running
out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.
Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires discon-
nected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic
tests.
Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling
roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning.
To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged
from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning
off the ignition switch.
Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is
noticeably low, or the engine has a malfunction. If you are
not able to stop driving immediately, slow down and drive
for only a short time. Have an inspection made by an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of
your choice as soon as possible.
In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a
burning odor may indicate severe and abnormal catalytic
converter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place,
shut the engine off and let the vehicle cool. Once the
engine is cool, immediately take your vehicle to an autho-
rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your
choice for service.
CAUTION
!Damage to the catalytic converter can result if your
vehicle is not kept in proper operating condition. If
the engine malfunctions or misfires, or if your vehi-
cle performance suffers, have it serviced promptly.
Running your vehicle when it is overheated may
result in damage to the converter and vehicle.
WA R N I N G
!Do not park or run your vehicle in areas where com-
bustible materials such as dry grass or leaves can
come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could
occur.Do not put undercoat paint on the catalytic con-
verter.
