Turn the key toward the front of the vehicle to lock the door. After checking that the door is
locked, turn the key back to the center and remove it.

 Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it. Children who get into unlocked vehicles may not be able to get out. Children trapped inside vehicles can quickly beovercome by heat and suffer serious injury or death due to heat stroke. Never leave children unattended inside a vehicle. In addition to the risk of heat stroke, children can activate switches andcontrols, resulting in an injury or fatal accident.
NOTE
 When locking or unlocking with the key, only the driver’s door will be locked or unlocked. To lock or unlock all doors, use the power door lock switches, the keyless entry system,the F.A.S.T-key or the remote control trans- mitter of the F.A.S.T.-key. Refer to “Power door locks” on page 5-38, “Keyless entry system” on page 5-7 and 5-30, and “To operate using the F.A.S.T.- key” on page 5-14.  In vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key, the driver’s door can be locked and unlockedusing the emergency key. Refer to “Emergency key” on page 5-23.

When parking on a hill, apply the parking brake and turn the front wheels toward thecurb on a downhill grade, away from the curb on an uphill grade.
To apply 1- Pull the lever up without pushing the
button at the end of hand grip. When the parking brake is set and theignition switch is in the “ON” position, the brake warning light in the instru- ment cluster will come on. Before driving, be sure to release the parking brake.
To r e l e a s e 1- Pull the lever up slightly. 2- Push and hold the button at the end of
the hand grip.
3- Push the lever downward.
CAUTION Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released and brake warning light is off. If you drive without the parking brake fully released, the warning display will appear onthe information screen in the multi-informa- tion display. If a vehicle is driven without releasing theparking brake, the brakes will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure. The outside mirror can be folded in toward the side window to prevent damage whenparking in tight locations.

When the rear window defogger switch is pressed with the engine running, the outside rearview mirrors are defogged or defrosted.Current will flow through the heater element inside the mirrors, thus clearing away frost or condensation.
The indicator light (A) will illuminate while the defogger is on. The heater will be turned off automatically in about 20 minutes.

While driving with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE), sports mode can be selected by pulling one of the sportronic steering wheel shifters toward you.In sports mode, rapid shifting is possible sim- ply by operating the sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter.
Unlike the manual transaxle, sports mode allows shifting with the accelerator pedal depressed.
CAUTION Upward shifts do not take place automati- cally in sports mode. Since sudden engine braking or accel- eration can cause a loss of traction, down- shifts must be made carefully in accordancewith the vehicle’s speed. On vehicles with a sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter, shift ranges may not change when the lateral paddle shifters are operated at the same time.NOTE
 Shift ranges can only be selected in a for- ward direction from 1st to 6th. To reverse or park the vehicle, move the selector lever tothe “R” or “P” position.
 To maintain good running performance, the transmission may refuse to perform an upshift when the selector lever or sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter is moved to the “+(SHIFT UP)” position at certain vehiclespeeds. Also, to prevent over-revving of the engine, the transmission may refuse to per- form a downshift when the shift lever orsportronic steering wheel paddle shifter is moved to the “- (SHIFT DOWN)” position at certain vehicle speeds. When this happens, abuzzer sounds to indicate that a downshift is not going to take place.  Move the selector lever gently between the manual and main gates and between posi- tions in the manual gate. Shifting can be performed even while the accelerator pedal is depressed. This allows the driver to enjoy sporty driving, such as quick cornering, by nimbly down-shifting to reduce vehicle speed just before entering a curve.

While the vehicle is stopped or being driven,move the gearshift lever from the “D” (DRIVE) position in the main shift gatetoward the driver’s seat to select manual shifting.
Each time the gearshift lever is pulled rear- ward, the transmission shifts up 1 gear. In addition, each time the gearshift lever is pushed forward, the transmission shifts down1 gear.
CAUTION When manually shifting while the vehicle is being driven, select the correct shift position to control the engine speed so that the tachometer indicator does not enter the redzone. Sudden engine braking and rapid accelera- tion can cause the vehicle to skid. Shift down according to road conditions and vehicle speed. If both the left and right sportronic steering wheel shifters are operated at the same time,the transmission may not change gears.NOTE
 Only the forward gears 1 to 6 can be selected. To reverse or park, place the gearshift lever in the “R” (REVERSE) or “P” (PARK) posi-tion.  During manual shifting, downshifting will be performed automatically when the vehicle slows down and the transmission will down- shift to 1st gear before the vehicle stops.
 If the gearshift lever or sportronic steering wheel shifters are operated repeatedly, the transmission will also shift repeatedly.  In order to ensure driving performance, upshifting may not occur depending on the vehicle speed even if the gearshift lever or sportronic steering wheel shifters are oper-ated. In addition, in order to prevent exces- sive engine speed, the buzzer sounds and downshifting may not occur depending onthe vehicle speed even if the gearshift lever or sportronic steering wheel shifters are operated.  When driving in an aggressive manner involving high engine rpm, sudden accelera-tion and/or deceleration, the Twin Clutch SST could take longer to shift due to higher fluid temperatures.

Operation of the Twin Clutch SST
CAUTION Before selecting a position with the engine running and the vehicle stationary, fullydepress the brake pedal to prevent the vehi- cle from creeping. Do not release the brakes until you are readyto drive away. The vehicle will begin to move as soon as the Twin Clutch SST is engaged. Depress the brake pedal with the right foot. Using the left foot could cause driver move-ment delay in case of an emergency. To prevent sudden acceleration, never run the engine at high rpms when shifting from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion. Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting on the brake pedal willaffect braking efficiency, may cause prema- ture wear of brake pads and may cause engine damage. Use the gearshift lever in the correct shift position in accordance with driving condi- tions. Never coast downhill backward in the driv-ing shift position { “D” (DRIVE) or manual shifting} or coast forward in the “R” (REVERSE) position.Engine stopping and increased brake pedal and steering effort could lead to an accident.

Your vehicle may not provide sufficient hill climbing ability and engine braking on steepslopes. Avoid driving on steep slopes even though the vehicle is a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Since driving torque can
be applied to all four
wheels, the performance of the vehicle when operating in all-wheel drive is greatly affected by the condition of the tires. Pay close attention to the tires. Install specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” on page 11-5.  Be sure to fit all four tires and wheels of the same size and type.When replacement of any of the tires or wheels is necessary, replace all of them.  All tires should be rotated whenever the wear difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-23.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear dif-ferences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brands or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting inpossible damage to the driving system. Fur- ther, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possibly leading to oilleakage, component seizure, or other serious problems.

The power steering system operates while the engine is running. It helps reduce the effort needed to turn the steering wheel. The power steering system has mechanicalsteering capability in case the power assist is lost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be able to steer your vehi-cle, but you will notice it takes much more effort to steer. If this happens, have your vehi- cle inspected at an authorized MitsubishiMotors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

CAUTION When towing the vehicle with only the front wheels or only the rear wheels raised off the ground, do not place the ignition switch in the “ON” position. Placing the ignitionswitch in the “ON” position could cause the ASC to operate, resulting in an accident. Note that the correct towing method dependson the transmission type and the vehicle’s drive configuration. For details, refer to
“Towing” on page 8-14.
Power steering system

Electric power steering system (EPS)

 During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection function may be acti- vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make thesteering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your
turning of the steering
wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.

If the driver’s door is opened with the key in the “LOCK” or “ACC” position or removed
from the ignition switch while the lights are on, the buzzer will sound to remind you to turn off the lights. If the driver’s door is opened with the ignition switch in the “LOCK” or “ACC” position, or if the ignition switch is moved to the “LOCK” position while the lights are on, thebuzzer will sound to remind you to turn offthe lights. In either case, the lights and buzzer will turn off automatically. Or you can turn the combination headlightsand dimmer switch to the “OFF” position to stop the buzzer.

To change the headlights from high beam to low beam and vice versa, pull the turn signallever to fully toward you (1). Switch the headlights to low beam as a courtesy when- ever there are oncoming vehicles, or whenthere is traffic moving ahead of you. An illu- minated blue light in the instrument cluster
indicates when the headlights are on high beam.

You can flash the high beams by pulling thelever gently toward you (2). The lights will go back to normal when you let go. While the high beam is on, you will see a blue light onthe instrument panel.

 When the engine is started using the key, if the driver’s door is opened and the key is removed, the headlight reminder buzzer intermittently emits a high-pitched sound. If the key is still in the ignition the keyreminder buzzer intermittently emits a low- pitched sound. The buzzer stops when the driver’s door isclosed. (A warning is also displayed in the multi-information display.)  When the engine is started using the keyless operation function, if the driver’s door is opened and the ignition switch is in the“LOCK” position, the headlight reminder buzzer intermittently emits a high-pitched sound.
