There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine. 7. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warning lights are functioning properly beforestarting the engine.8. Turn the ignition switch to the “START” pedal. Release the key when the enginestarts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rearwindow defogger, are turned off.
2. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi- cles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT) or the clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual trans-axle, press the accelerator pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immedi-ately after the engine starts. 3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline.While depressing the brake pedal on vehi-cles equipped with CVT or the clutch pedal on the vehicles
equipped with man-
ual transaxle, push the accelerator pedalall the way down and hold it there, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 seconds. Return the ignition switch to the “LOCK”position and release the accelerator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds whiledepressing the brake pedal or the clutch pedal, but do not push the accelerator pedal. Release the ignition key if theengine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. If the engine still will not start, contact your local Mitsubi-shi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -4 °F (-20 °C) or lower on vehicles with CVT, itmay not be possible to start from a standstill even with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position.This phenomenon occurs because the trans-axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem. If it occurs, place the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position andlet the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transaxle will warm up, and you will be able to start normally.Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.

To start

CAUTION Do not move the gearshift lever into reverse while the vehicle is moving forward; doing so will damage the transaxle. Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal because this will cause premature clutch wear or damage. Do not coast in the “N” (Neutral) position (illegal in many states). Do not use the gearshift lever as a handrest, because this can result in premature wear ofthe transaxle shift forks.NOTE
 If it is hard to shift into 1st, depress the clutch pedal a second time; the shift will then be easier.  To shift into reverse from 5th gear, move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position, and then shift it into reverse.

CAUTION Avoid downshifting that may cause the tachometer pointer to enter the red zone. This puts the engine at risk of being dam- aged.

For the best fuel economy and performance in using your manual transaxle, upshift as listed below. At low altitude locations, shift at the vehicle speeds listed. Upshifting earlier during cruiseconditions (relatively steady speeds) will improve your fuel economy.

It is recommended that you downshift to alower gear when needed to maintain thedesired speed, according to the table.Avoid downshifting at too high a speed. The engine may suffer damage.
To maintain a safe speed and prolong brake life, shift down to 2nd or 1st when descend- ing a steep hill. Downshifting is also important to avoid “lug-ging” the engine at too low a speed, such as when turning a corner or when driving up a steep hill.

This position locks the transmission to pre- vent the vehicle from moving. The engine canbe started from the “PARK” position. Move the lever to this position only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
At this position, the transmission is disen- gaged. It is the same as the neutral position ona manual transaxle and should be used when the vehicle is not moving for an extended length of time during driving, such as in atraffic jam. This position is used for most city and high- way driving. The transmission will automati-cally and continuously change its gear ratio depending on road and driving conditions.
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, immediately park your vehicle in a safe place and follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid is overheating. The engine con- trol may activate to lower the CVT fluid tem-perature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease. In this case, take one of the following procedures:• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down.After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains or flashes frequently, have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
[When warning display is showing] It may be that there is something unusual happening in the CVT, causing a safety device to activate. Have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.

WA R N I N G Never move the selector lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving since you could accidentally slip it into the “P”(PARK) or “R”(REVERSE) position, damaging the transmission. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope, the engine should be started in the “P” (PARK) position, not in“N” (NEUTRAL) position. To prevent rolling, always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) position, or when shift- ing into or out of “N” (NEUTRAL) posi-tion.

While driving with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE), sports mode can be selected by pulling one of the sportronic steeringwheel shifters toward you. In sports mode, rapid

NOTE
 The upward shift may be made automatically in sports mode when the engine revolutions rises and approaches the tachometer’s red zone (the red-colored part of the tachometer dial).  Shift ranges can only be selected in a for- ward direction from 1st to 6th. To reverse orpark the vehicle, move the selector lever to the “R” or “P” position.  To maintain good running performance, the transmission may refuse to perform an upshift when the selector lever or sportronicsteering wheel paddle shifter is moved to the “+(SHIFT UP)” positi

Also, to prevent over-revving of theengine, the transmission may refuse to per- form a downshift when the shift lever or sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter ismoved to the “- (SHIFT DOWN)” position at certain vehicle speeds. When this happens, a buzzer sounds to indicate that a downshift isnot going to take place.  Move the selector lever gently between the manual and main gates and between posi- tions in the manual gate. And do not operate sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter vio-lently. Excessive force could damage the selector lever or sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter.

 To return to “D” (DRIVE) operation, pull the sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter on the +(UP) side for longer than 2 seconds, orpark the vehicle to change the selector lever position indicator to “D” (DRIVE) and return to “D” (DRIVE) operation.  When the sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter is operated with the selector lever inthe “L” (LOW) position, gear is not shifted because the selectable shift range is limited.

Cruise control is an automatic speed control system. It lets you keep the same driving speed. Cruise control can be activated atabout 25 mph (40 km/h)
or more. It is espe-
cially useful for freeway driving. Cruise con- trol does not work at speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
To activate and deactivate the cruise control function. To reduce the set speed and to set the speed of constant-speed driving. To increase the set speed and to resume to the previous set speed. To terminate constant-speed driving.
CAUTION If the warning display appears while the engine is running, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of
your choice as soon as
possible. It may become harder to turn the steering wheel.
Cruise control
(if so equipped)
CAUTION For safety reasons, the cruise control system should be set to the “OFF” position by press- ing the “ON OFF” switch (A) when you are not using the cruise control system. Do not use cruise control when driving con- ditions will not allow you to stay at the same speed, such as in heavy traffic or on roadsthat are winding, icy, snowy, wet, slippery or on a steep downhill slope. On vehicles with manual transaxle, do not move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position while driving at a set speed withoutdepressing the clutch pedal. The engine will run too fast and might be damaged. NOTE
 Cruise control may not be able to keep your speed on uphills or downhills.  Your speed may drop on a steep uphill. You may have to use the accelerator pedal if you want to stay at your set speed.  Your speed may increase to more than the set speed on a steep downhill. You must use the brake to control your speed.

The cruise control can be turned off as fol- lows:  Press the “ON OFF” switch (A). (Cruise control will be turned off.)  Press the “CANCEL” switch (D).  Depress the brake pedal or lightly tap it.
The cruise control will be turned off automat- ically in the following conditions:  When you depress the clutch pedal (on vehicles with manual transaxle).  Your speed slows to about 10 mph (15 km/h) or more below the set speed because of an uphill, etc.  Your speed slows to about 25 mph (40 km/h) or less.
 When the active stability control (ASC) starts operating (if so equipped). Refer to “Active stability control (ASC)” on page 5-76.
Also, the set speed driving may be deacti- vated as follow:  When the engine speed rises and approaches the tachometer’s red zone (the red-colored part of the tachometer dial).
