Turn the key toward the front of the vehicle to lock the door. After checking that the door islocked, turn the key back to the center and remove it.
Move the lock knob to the lock position to lock the door.All doors should be kept locked while driv- ing. The driver’s door can be unlocked without using the lock knob by pulling on the inside door handle. 1. Move the inside lock knob to the locked position.
• Locked doors can help prevent outsiders from gaining access to your vehicle when you slow or come to a stop.
 Lock your vehicle whenever you leave it. Children who get into unlocked vehicles may not be able to get out. Children trapped inside vehicles can quickly beovercome by heat and suffer serious injury or death due to heat stroke. Never leave children unattended inside a vehicle. In addition to the risk of heat stroke, children can activate switches andcontrols, resulting in an injury or fatal accident.NOTE
 When locking or unlocking with the key, only the driver’s door will be locked orunlocked. To lock or unlock all doors, use the power door lock switches, the keyless entry system,the F.A.S.T-key or the remote control trans- mitter of the F.A.S.T.-key. Refer to “Power door locks” on page 5-37, “Keyless entry system” on page 5-7 and 5-30, and “To operate using the F.A.S.T.-key” on page 5-14.  In vehicles equipped with the F.A.S.T.-key, the driver’s door can be locked and unlocked using the emergency key. To park the vehicle, first bring it to a com- plete stop and fully engage the parking brake.For vehicles with a manual transaxle, move the gear shift lever to 1st (on a uphill) or “R” (Reverse) (on a downhill) position.For vehicles with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), set the selector lever to “P” (PARK) position.
When parking on a hill, apply the parking brake and turn the front wheels toward thecurb on a downhill grade, away from the curb on an uphill grade.
 Be sure to close the sunroof completely when washing the vehicle or when leaving the vehicle.  Do not put any wax on the weatherstrip (black rubber) around the sunroof opening. If it is waxed, the weatherstrip cannot maintain a weatherproof seal with the sunroof.  After washing the vehicle or after rain be sure to wipe off any water that is on the sun-roof before operating it.  Operating the sunroof repeatedly with the engine turned off will run down the battery. Operate the sunroof only while the engine is running.
Parking brake
NOTE
To apply 1- Pull the lever up without pushing the
button at the end of hand grip. When the parking brake is set and theignition switch is in the “ON” position, the brake warning light in the instru- ment cluster will come on. Before driving, be sure to release the parking brake.

The outside rearview mirrors can be adjusted when the ignition switch is in the “ON” or “ACC” position.Move the lever (A) to the same side as the mirror you wish to adjust. Press the switch (B) to adjust the mirror posi- tion.
The outside mirror can be folded in toward the side window to prevent damage whenparking in tight locations.

When the rear window defogger switch ispressed with the engine running, the outside rearview mirrors are defogged or defrosted. Current will flow through the heater elementinside the mirrors, thus clearing away frost or condensation.
The indicator light (A) will illuminate while the defogger is on. The heater will be turned off automatically in about 20 minutes.

While driving with the selector lever in the “D” (DRIVE), sports mode can be selected by pulling one of the sportronic steeringwheel shifters toward you. In sports mode, rapid
shifting is possible sim-
ply by operating the sportronic steering wheelpaddle shifter.Unlike the manual transaxle, sports mode allows shifting with the accelerator pedal depressed.
NOTE
 The upward shift may be made automatically in sports mode when the engine revolutions rises and approaches the tachometer’s red zone (the red-colored part of the tachometer dial).  Shift ranges can only be selected in a for- ward direction from 1st to 6th. To reverse orpark the vehicle, move the selector lever to the “R” or “P” position.  To maintain good running performance, the transmission may refuse to perform an upshift when the selector lever or sportronicsteering wheel paddle shifter is moved to the “+(SHIFT UP)” positi

speeds. Also, to prevent over-revving of theengine, the transmission may refuse to per- form a downshift when the shift lever or sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter ismoved to the “- (SHIFT DOWN)” position at certain vehicle speeds. When this happens, a buzzer sounds to indicate that a downshift isnot going to take place.  Move the selector lever gently between the manual and main gates and between posi- tions in the manual gate. And do not operate sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter vio-lently. Excessive force could damage the selector lever or sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter.

 To return to “D” (DRIVE) operation, pull the sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter on the +(UP) side for longer than 2 seconds, orpark the vehicle to change the selector lever position indicator to “D” (DRIVE) and return to “D” (DRIVE) operation.  When the sportronic steering wheel paddle shifter is operated with the selector lever inthe “L” (LOW) position, gear is not shifted because the selectable shift range is limited.
+ (SHIFT UP) Transmission shifts up once by each opera- tion. - (SHIFT DOWN) Transmission shifts down once by each operation.
CAUTION In sports mode, the driver must execute upward shifts in accordance with prevailing road conditions, taking care to keep theengine speed below the red zone. Repeated continuous operation of the spor- tronic steering wheel paddle shifter will con- tinuously switch shift position. Shift ranges may not change when the lateral paddle shifters are operated at the same time.

Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-19.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.

Overuse of the brake can cause poor brake response and premature wear of the brake pads and linings.When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION Always use tires of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear dif-ferences. Using tires that differ in size, type, brands or the degree of wear, will increase the differential oil temperature, resulting inpossible damage to the driving system. Fur- ther, the drive train will be subjected to excessive loading, possibly leading to oilleakage, component seizure, or other serious problems.

CAUTION Do not tow all-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type Aor Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetrain, or unstable towing. If you tow all-wheel drive vehicles, use Type C or Type D equipment. [For vehicle equipped with the Electronically controlled 4WD system] Even in “2WD” mode, the vehicle cannot betowed with the front or the rear wheels on the ground.
Jacking up a all-wheel drive vehicles

The power steering system operates while the engine is running. It helps reduce the effortneeded to turn the steering wheel. The power steering system has mechanical steering capability in case the power assist islost. If the power assist is lost for some rea- son, you will still be able to steer your vehi- cle, but you will notice it takes much moreeffort to steer. If this happens, have your vehi-cle inspected at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

CAUTION The system may be malfunctioning. Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine. Restart the engine and check whether the dis- play/indicator goes out. If they go out, thereis no abnormal condition. If they do not go out or if they turn on frequently, it is not nec- essary to stop the vehicle immediately, butyou should have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as pos-sible.

CAUTION When towing the vehicle with only the front wheels or only the rear wheels raised off theground, do not place the ignition switch in the “ON” position. Placing the ignition switch in the “ON” position could cause theASC to operate, resulting in an accident. Note that the correct towing method depends on the transmission type and the vehicle’s drive configuration. For details, refer to “Towing” on page 8-12.
Power steering system
WA R N I N G Do not stop the engine while the vehicle is moving. Stopping the engine would make the steering wheel extremely hard to turn,possibly resulting in an accident.
Hydraulic power steering sys- tem (HPS)

CAUTION Do not leave the steering wheel turned all the way in one direction. This can cause damage to the power steering system.
Electric power steering system (EPS)
(if so equipped)NOTE
 During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel (for example, while you are manoeuvring the vehicle into a parkingspace), a protection function may be acti- vated to prevent overheating of the power steering system. This function will make thesteering wheel gradually harder to turn. In this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel for a while. When the system hascooled down, the steering effort will return to normal.  If you turn the steering wheel while the vehi- cle is stationary with the headlights on, the headlights may become dim. This behavioris not abnormal. The headlights will return to their original brightness after a short while.

If the combination headlights and dimmer switch is turned to the “ ” or “ ” posi- tion again after the engine is turned off, the about 3 minutes auto-cutout function described above will not work. The lights (theparking lights, tail lights and license plate lights) will stay on and will not turn off auto- matically.

Switch the headlights to low beam as a courtesy when-ever there are oncoming vehicles, or when there is traffic moving ahead of you. Within 60 seconds of turning the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position, pull theturn signal lever toward you.
4. The headlights will come on in the low beam setting for about 30 seconds. After the headlights go off, the headlights can be turned on again in the low beam settingfor about 30 seconds by pulling the turn signal lever toward you within 60 seconds of turning the ignition switch to the“LOCK” position. To turn on the head- lights again after 60 seconds of turning the ignition switch to the “LOCK” posi-tion, repeat the process from step 1.

The direction of the headlight beam (thedirection in which the light shines) alters according to the number of people and the load in the vehicle. Lower the headlight angleif it is too high due to the number of people and/or the load in the vehicle so that the head- lights’ glare does not distract the drivers ofapproaching vehicles. First set the combina-tion headlights and dimmer switch to the “ ” position, then turn the headlight level- ing switch knob to lower the beam. The greater the number on the headlight levelingswitch knob, the lower the beam will point. Set the switch to the appropriate position so that the headlight beam is level with the road.
NOTE
 While the coming home light function is operating, perform one of the following operations to cancel the function. • Pull the turn signal lever toward you. • Turn the combination headlights and dim- mer switch to the “ ” or “ ” position. • Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion.

The wipers will operate once if the lever is raised to the “MIST” position and released when the ignition switch is in the “ON” or“ACC” position. The wipers will continue to operate while the lever is held in the “MIST” position. The wipers will operate once if the lever is moved to the “AUTO” position and the knob
(D) is turned in the “+” direction when the ignition switch is “ON” position.

To turn on the windshield washer, pull thelever toward you with the ignition switch in either the “ON” or “ACC” position. The washer fluid will be sprayed onto thewindshield by pulling the lever toward you.
