Remove the key at the “LOCK” position. Turn the steering wheel until it is locked. Turn the key to the “ACC” position while moving the steering wheel slightly.
NOTE
For vehicles with a Twin Clutch SST, the key cannot be removed unless the gearshift lever is set to the “P” (PARK) position, whichallows the ignition switch to turn to the “LOCK” position.CAUTION Do not remove the ignition key from the ignition switch while driving. The steering wheel will lock, causing loss of control. If the engine is turned off while driving, the power brake booster will stop functioning and braking efficiency will be reduced. Also, the power steering system will not function and it will require greater effort to manually steer the vehicle. Do not leave the key in the “ON” position for a long time when the engine is not running. This will cause the battery to run down.Twin Clutch SST
Do not turn the key to the “START” position when the engine is running. It will damage the starter motor.

6. On vehicles with manual transaxle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position. On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, makesure the gearshift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position. 7. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warninglights are functioning properly before starting the engine. 8. Turn the ignition switch to the “START”position without pressing the accelerator pedal. Release the key when the engine starts.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start.
1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditioning blower and rear window defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi-cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST or the clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, press the accelera-tor pedal halfway and hold it there, then crank the engine. Release the accelerator pedal, immediately after the engine starts.3. If the engine still will not start, the enginecould be flooded with too much gasoline. While depressing the brake pedal on vehi- cles equipped with Twin Clutch SST orthe clutch pedal on the vehicles equipped with manual transaxle, push the accelera- tor pedal all the way down and hold itthere, then crank the engine for 5 to 6 sec- onds. Return the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position and release the acceler-ator pedal. Wait a few seconds, and then crank the engine again for 5 to 6 seconds while depressing the brake pedal or theclutch pedal, but do not push the accelera- tor pedal. Release the ignition key if the engine starts. If the engine fails to start, repeat these procedures. If the engine still will not start, contact your local Mitsubi- shi Motors dealer or a repair facility ofyour choice for assistance.
When the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to start from a standstill even with the gearshift lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans- mission has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem. If it occurs, place the gearshift lever in the “P” (PARK)position and let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes. The transmission will warm up, and you willbe able to start normally. Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation.
N00547600031
At high altitude locations, the idle speed maybe higher. This is done in order to stabilizethe idle speed when the power steering sys- tem and other systems operate. It does not indicate a malfunction.

1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
NOTE
On vehicles with Twin Clutch SST, the starter will not operate unless the gearshift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position or thegearshift lever is in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position with the brake pedal depressed. For safety reasons, start the engine in the “P”(PARK) position so that the wheels are locked.

Shifting can be performed even while the accelerator pedal is depressed. This allows the driver to enjoy sporty driving, such as quick cornering, by nimbly down- shifting to reduce vehicle speed just before entering a curve.
N00540600016
While the vehicle is stopped or being driven, move the gearshift lever from the “D” (DRIVE) position in the main shift gatetoward the driver’s seat to select manual shifting. Each time the gearshift lever is pulled rear- ward, the transmission shifts up 1 gear.In addition, each time the gearshift lever is pushed forward, the transmission shifts down 1 gear.
CAUTION When manually shifting while the vehicle is being driven, select the correct shift positionto control the engine speed so that the tachometer indicator does not enter the red zone. Sudden engine braking and rapid accelera- tion can cause the vehicle to skid. Shift downaccording to road conditions and vehicle speed.
If both the left and right sportronic steering wheel shifters are operated at the same time, the transmission may not change gears.NOTE
Only the forward gears 1 to 6 can be selected. To reverse or park, place the gearshift leverin the “R” (REVERSE) or “P” (PARK) posi- tion. During manual shifting, downshifting will be performed automatically when the vehicle slows down and the transmission will down-shift to 1st gear before the vehicle stops. If the gearshift lever or sportronic steering wheel shifters are operated repeatedly, the transmission will also shift repeatedly. In order to ensure driving performance, upshifting may not occur depending on the vehicle speed even if the gearshift lever orsportronic steering wheel shifters are oper- ated. In addition, in order to prevent exces- sive engine speed, the buzzer sounds anddownshifting may not occur depending on the vehicle speed even if the gearshift lever or sportronic steering wheel shifters are operated. When driving in an aggressive manner involving high engine rpm, sudden accelera- tion and/or deceleration, the Twin ClutchSST could take longer to shift due to higher fluid temperatures.CAUTION

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing another vehicle) pushthe accelerator to the floor if it is safe to do so in traffic conditions. The Twin Clutch SST will automatically downshift.
N00541600042
The Twin Clutch SST may not upshift to a higher shift position if the computer deter- mines the current speed cannot be maintainedonce a higher shift position is engaged. For smoother vehicle performance, if you release the throttle while climbing a steep grade, the Twin Clutch SST may not upshift. This is normal, as the computer is temporarily preventing shifting. After reaching the top of the hill, normal shift function will resume.
When traveling down steep grades, the com- puter may automatically select a lower shift
Depress the brake pedal with the right foot. Using the left foot could cause driver move- ment delay in case of an emergency. To prevent sudden acceleration, never run the engine at high rpms when shifting from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion. Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting on the brake pedal willaffect braking efficiency, may cause prema- ture wear of brake pads and may cause engine damage. Use the gearshift lever in the correct shift position in accordance with driving condi-tions. Never coast downhill backward in the driv- ing shift position {“D” (DRIVE) or manualshifting} or coast forward in the “R” (REVERSE) position. Engine stopping and increased brake pedaland steering effort could lead to an accident. Do not rev the engine with the brake pedal pressed when the vehicle is stationary. This can cause sudden acceleration and dam- age the Twin Clutch SST.Also, when you depress the accelerator pedal while holding down the brake pedal with the gearshift lever in the “D” (DRIVE) position, the engine revolutions may not rise as high as when performing the same operation withthe gearshift lever in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position.CAUTION
Passing acceleration
NOTE
In manual shift, downshifts do not take place when the accelerator is depressed all the wayto the floor.
Uphill/downhill driving
DRIVING UPHILL
CAUTION Do not use the tendency of the vehicle to creep forward in order to drive at low speeds up hills. The transmission may be damaged and an accident may occur due to the following con-ditions.• The Twin Clutch SST fluid temperaturewill rise and can cause transmission dam- age.• If the vehicle is continuously driven at lowspeeds using the tendency of the vehicle to creep forward, the vehicle will vibrate or the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display to alert the driver that the Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature has risen. After that, if the Twin Clutch SST fluid temperature rises even higher, the transmis- sion protection control will operate. If this occurs, the vehicle may suddenly reverse as if the gearshift lever was in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position and cause anaccident. If the warning display appears or the transmission protection control operates, refer to “When warning display is showing” on page 5-60.

and power drive distribution of the center dif- ferential.
N00541500012
The AYC is a system, with a left-right differ-ential limiting function and yaw control func-tion, that enhances cornering performance and stability during
cornering by controlling
the left-right drive power difference of therear wheels, the braking force of all four wheels, and the vehicle yaw moment.
The left-right differential limiting function is a function that enhances driving performance and vehicle stability by preventing idle spin-ning of a wheel when driving on slippery road surfaces or when the road surfaces of the left and right wheels are different. The yaw control function is a function that enhances vehicle cornering performance by controlling the drive power difference of theleft and right wheels
and the braking force
when the vehicle does not turn in response to steering input, such as when the steeringwheel is turned quickly or when driving on slippery road surfaces.
N00542401057
Select the control mode from the followingthree types to suit the driving conditions.
When the ignition switch is set to the “ON” position, operate the AWC switch to change the control mode. Each time the switch is pushed, the control mode changes in the order “TARMAC”
“GRAVEL”
“SNOW”
“TARMAC”.
NOTE
If the parking brake lever is pulled up while the vehicle is moving, the center differential is designed to switch to a free state conditionwhich will allow the rear wheel to lock eas- ier.
AYC (Active yaw control sys- tem)
CAUTION Control of the braking force does not enhance the stopping performance of the vehicle, therefore, pay careful attention to the safety of your surroundings when driv-ing.

Anti-lock braking system 5-74 Features and controls
5
N00542600049
When there is a malfunction in the system, the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-information display. In addition, the S-AWC control mode display in section A will go out at the same time.
N00517900295
The anti-lock braking system helps preventthe wheels from locking up when braking. This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi-cle is equipped with the anti-lock braking system, leave a greater braking distance when:• Driving on gravel or snow-covered roads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces. Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted to situations where brakes are applied suddenly. This system mayalso prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings, or anyuneven road surface.
WA R N I N G Always concentrate on your driving first. Keep your eyes and mind on the road. Dis- tractions while driving can lead to an acci- dent.
S-AWC warning display
CAUTION The system may be malfunctioning. Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine. Restart the engine and check whether the warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” go out. If the warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” go out, there is no abnormal condition. If the warning display and “SERVICE REQUIRED” do not go out or appear frequently, it is not necessary to stop the vehicle immediately, but we recommendthat you have your vehicle inspected.NOTE
If the ambient temperature drops and the vis- cosity of the AWC control fluid increases, the warning may be displayed. At this time, S-AWC control is temporarily suspended, but this will not affect normaldriving. After the vehicle is driven for a while, if the engine is restarted after the AWC controlfluid warms up or the ambient temperature increases, the S-AWC control will start oper- ating again if the warning display goes out.

When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal pulsa- tion and the vibrations of the vehicle body and steering wheel. It may also feel as ifthe pedal resists being pressed. In this situation, simply hold the brake pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance. An operation noise is emitted from the engine compartment or feel a shock fromthe brake pedal when start driving imme- diately after starting the engine. These are normal sound or operation that the anti-lock braking system makes when per- forming a self-check. It does not indicate a malfunction. The anti-lock braking system can be used after the vehicle has reached a speed over approximately 6 mph (10 km/h). It stopsworking when the vehicle slows below approximately 3 mph (5 km/h).
N00531600632
Warning light Warning display If there is a malfunction in the system, the anti-lock braking system warning light willcome on and the warning display will appear on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display.Under normal conditions,
the anti-lock brak-
ing system warning light only comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON”position and goes off a few seconds later.
N00531700561
Avoid hard braking and high-speed driving. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. Test the system by restarting the engine anddriving at a speed of about 12 mph (20 km/h) or higher. If the warning light / display then remain offduring driving, there is no abnormal condi- tion.
CAUTION The anti-lock braking system cannot prevent accidents. It is your responsibility to take safety precautions and to drive carefully. To prevent failure of the anti-lock braking system, be sure all 4 wheels and tires are the same size and the same type.
Do not install any aftermarket limited-slip differential (LSD) on yo
ur vehicle. The anti-
lock braking system may stop functioning properly.
