CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the warning display or the warning display will appear on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display. In this case, immediately park your vehicle in a safe place and follow these procedures: [When warning display is showing] The continuously variable transmission (CVT) fluid is overheating. The engine con- trol may activate to lower the CVT fluid tem-perature, causing the engine revolutions and vehicle speed to decrease. In this case, take one of the following procedures:• Slow down your vehicle.• Stop your vehicle in a safe place, put the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) position, and open the engine hood with the enginerunning to allow the engine to cool down.After a while, confirm that the warning display is no longer showing. It is safe to continue driving if the display is no longer showing. If the warning display remains or flashes frequently, have your vehicleinspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

To prevent rolling, always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) position, or when shift- ing into or out of “N” (NEUTRAL) posi-tion.
“D” DRIVE
CAUTION To prevent transmission damage, never shift into the “D” (DRIVE) position from the “R” (REVERSE) position while
the vehicle is in
motion.
“L” LOW (except for vehicles with manual gate)
WA R N I N G This position can be used for maximum engine braking.Be very careful not to shift into “L” (LOW) suddenly. Sudden engine braking may cause the tires to skid.Select this position according to the road conditions and vehicle speed.

The temperature of the Twin Clutch SST fluid is high. If this occurs, take one of the following mea- sures. Reduce the vehicle speed. Stop the vehicle in a safe place, place the gearshift lever in the “P” (PARK) posi- tion, and then open the engine hood with the engine running to cool the engine.
After a while, check that the warning dis- play has gone out. If the display goes out, the vehicle can be driven normally.If the warning display remains on or comeson frequently, have the vehicle checked by an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. If the vehicle continues to be driven after the warning display appears, and the tempera- ture of the Twin Clutch SST fluid continues to rise, the transmission protection control may be activated and cause the transmission
to function as if the gearshift lever was in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position. At this time, the vehicle temporarily cannot be driven.If this occurs, take the following measures. 1. Depress the brake pedal and stop the vehi- cle in a safe place. 2. Place the gearshift lever in the “P”(PARK) position, and then open the engine hood with the engine running to cool the engine. 3. After a while, check that the warning display has gone out, and then stop the engine if the warning display has gone out. 4. If the engine can be restarted, the vehiclecan be driven normally.

WA R N I N G Never move the gearshift lever to the “N” (NEUTRAL) position while driving since you could accidentally slip it into the “P”(PARK) or “R”(REVERSE) position and the engine speed could rise, damaging the transmission.
To prevent the vehicle from rolling when stopped on a slope, the engine should be started in the “P” (PARK) position. Although the engine can be started when the vehicle is in the “N” (NEUTRAL) posi-tion, for safety reasons, do not start the engine in the “N” (NEUTRAL) position. Always keep your foot on the brake pedal when the vehicle is in “N” (NEUTRAL) position, or when shifting into or out of“N” (NEUTRAL) position, to prevent roll- ing.
“D” DRIVE

A limited-slip differential is applied for rear wheel differential. The features of this lim- ited-slip differential are described below: Just as with a conventional differential, the wheel on one side is allowed to turn at a dif- ferent speed from the wheel on the other side when the vehicle is cornering. The differencebetween the limited-slip differential and a conventional differential is that if the wheel on one side of the vehicle loses traction, agreater amount of torque
is applied to the
wheel on the other side to improve traction.

Overuse of the brake can cause poor brake response and premature wear of the brakepads and linings. When driving down a long or steep hill, use engine braking by downshifting.
CAUTION The system may be malfunctioning. Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine. Restart the engine and check whether the warning display goes out. If the warning display goes out, there is no abnormal condition. If the warning display does not go out or appears fre- quently, it is not necessary to stop the vehicle immediately, but we recommend that youhave your vehicle inspected.

Even if there is a difference in the amount of traction the wheels can get, if both of them are spinning, the limited-slip differential will not be effective.CAUTION Never start the engine while one of the front or rear wheels is jacked up and the others in contact with the ground; doing so may cause the vehicle to jump forward. Continuously attempting to extract the vehi- cle from snow, mud, etc. while using highengine rpm may damage the limited-slip dif- ferential. Using a compact spare wheel will adversely affect the limited-slip differential; replace the compact spare wheel with a standard sizewheel as soon as possible.

If the power assist is lost, the effort needed topress the brake pedal is greater. If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit

The hill start assist makes it easy to start offon a steep uphill slope by preventing the vehicle from moving backwards. It keeps the braking force for about 2 seconds when youmove your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.
WA R N I N G Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the full pedal stroke that would be necessary in an emergency. Make sure that the pedal canbe operated freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is securely held in place.CAUTION It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot resting on the brake pedal when braking is not required. This practice can result in very high brake temperatures, pre-mature pad and lining wear, and possible damage to the brakes.
Power brakes
WA R N I N G Never coast downhill with the engine OFF. Keep the engine running whenever your vehicle is in motion. If you turn off the engine while driving, the power brakebooster will stop working and your brakes will not work as well. If the power assist is lost or if either brake hydraulic system stops working properly, take your vehicle to an authorized Mit-subishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.
Brake pad wear alarm
WA R N I N G Driving with worn brake pads will make it harder to stop, and can cause an accident.
Hill start assist (for vehicles equipped with Twin Clutch SST)
CAUTION Do not overly rely on the hill start assist to prevent backwards movement of the vehicle.Under certain circumstances, even when hill start assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf-ficiently depressed, if the vehicle is heavily loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is not designed to keep the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopes for more than 2 seconds.
