The indicator light on the engine switch illu- minates orange. All electrical accessories can be used. The indicator light on the engine switch illu- minates green. The indicator light turns off when the engineis running.

switch without press-
ing the brake pedal {continuously variable transmission (CVT)} or the clutch pedal (manual transaxle) while the vehicle is sta-tionary, you can change the operation mode in the order of OFF, ACC, ON, OFF.

in ACC operation mode
for approximately 30 minutes, the ACCpower auto-cutout fu
nction automatically
cuts power to the audio system and other electronic devices that
can be used during
ACC operation mode. To enable power after ACC power auto-cut- out function, press the
engine switch while in
ACC.

the engine, the ID code
which the F.A.S.T.-key sends must match the one registered to the immobilizer computer. (Refer to “Electronic

Changing the operation mode

CAUTION When the engine is not running, put the oper- ation mode in OFF. Leaving the operationmode in ON or ACC for a long time when the engine is not running may cause the bat- tery to be discharged, making it impossibleto start the engine.  When the battery is disconnected, the current operation mode is memo
rized. After recon-
necting the battery, the memorized mode is selected automaticall
y. Before disconnect-
ing the battery for re
pair or replacement,
make sure to put the operation mode in OFF. Be careful if you are not sure which opera-tion mode the vehicle is in when the battery is run down. The operation mode cannot be changed from OFF to ACC or ON if the F.A.S.T.-key is not detected to be in the
vehicle. Refer to “Oper-
ating range for star
ting the engine and
changing the operation mode” on page 5-11.
NOTE
 If the operation mode cannot be changed to OFF, perform the following procedure. 1. Move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position, and then change the operation mode to OFF. (for vehicleswith continuously variable transmission (CVT)) 2. One of the other causes could be low bat- tery voltage. If this
occurs, the keyless
entry system and the F.A.S.T.-key opera-tion will also not
operate. Contact an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.

Your vehicle is equipped with an electroni- cally controlled fuel in
jection system. This is
a system that automatically controls fuelinjection. There is usually no need to depress the accelerator pedal when starting the engine.To prevent battery drai
n, wait a few seconds
between attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened.2. Make sure the parking brake is applied. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal down firmly with your right foot.
4. Press and hold the clutch pedal all the way down (manual transaxle). 5. On vehicles equippe
d with manual trans-
axle, place the gearshift lever in the “N” (Neutral) position.On vehicles equipped with continuously variable transmission (CVT), make sure the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK)position.
6. Press the engine switch. 7. Confirm that all wa
rning lights and warn-
ing displays are functioning properly.
After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditio
ning blower and rear
window defogger, are turned off.

Starting the engine

NOTE
 After the engine has not
started for a while,
the brake pedal effort needed to start theengine may become grea
ter. If this occurs,
depress the brake pedal more firmly than usual.NOTE
 For vehicles equipped with a manual trans- axle, the engine will
not start unless the
clutch pedal is fully
depressed (Clutch inter-
lock). This is a safety feature.

variable transmission (C
VT), the engine can
only be started when th
e selector lever is in
the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL) posi- tion. For safety reasons, the engine should bestarted when the selector lever is in the “P” (PARK) position in which the driving wheels lock.NOTE
 Minor noises may be heard on engine start- up. These will disappear as the engine warms up.

To maintain a safe speed and prolong brake life, shift down to 2nd or 1st when descend-ing a steep hill. Downshifting is also important to avoid “lug- ging” the engine at t

when turning a corner or when driving up a steep hill.

The transmission prevents unnecessary upshifts even when the accelerator pedal isreleased and ensures smooth driving. According to the conditions, the transmission will automatically shift to a lower gear ratio to achieve stronger engine braking. This mayhelp reduce your need to use the service brake.

The CVT selects an optimum ratio automati- cally when the selector lever is in the “D”(DRIVE) position, depe
nding on the speed of

It is not seen during normal driving.
CAUTION If a malfunction occurs in the CVT while driving, the indicator will blink.In this case, immediat

in a safe place and fo
llow these procedures:

ndicator stops blinking.
It is safe to continue driving if the indicator no longer blinks.If the indicator contin

Operation of the CVT

depress the brake pedal to prevent the vehi- cle from creeping. The vehicle will begin to move as soon as theCVT is engaged, especi
ally when the engine
speed or idle speed is
high, or with the air
conditioning operating.Do not release the brak
e pedal until you are
ready to drive away. Depress the brake pedal
with the right foot at
all times. Using the left foot could cause driver move-ment delay in case of an emergency. To prevent sudden acce
leration, never run
the engine at high rpms when shifting from the “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL). Operating the accelerator pedal while the other foot is resting
on the brake pedal will
affect braking efficiency and may cause pre-mature wear of brake pads.

To gain extra acceleration in “D” (DRIVE) position (when passing an
other vehicle) push
the accelerator to the floor. The CVT will automatically downshift.
For short waiting periods, such as at traffic lights, the vehicle can be
left in selector lever
position and held stationary with the servicebrake. For longer waiting periods with the engine running, place th
e selector lever in the “N”
(NEUTRAL) position and apply the parking brake, while holding the vehicle stationary with the service brake. Prior to moving off after having stopped the vehicle, make sure that the selector lever is in“D” (DRIVE) position. To park the vehicle, fi
rst bring it to a com-
plete stop, fully engage the parking brake,
and then move the selector lever to the “P” (PARK) position. If the CVT does not shift while driving, or your vehicle does not pick up enough speed when starting on an uphill slope, it may bethat there is something unusual happening in the transmission. Have your vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice immediately.

the selector lever

Cruise control is an automatic speed control system that keeps a set speed. It can be acti-vated at speeds from about 25 mph (40 km/h). Cruise cont
rol does not work at
speeds below about 25 mph (40 km/h).
NOTE
 The indicator may turn on when you start the engine. This means
that the battery volt-
age momentarily dropped when the enginewas started. It does not
indicate a malfunc-
tion, provided that
the display goes out
immediately.  When a compact spare tire has been put on your vehicle, the grippi
ng ability of the tire
will be lower, making it
more likely that the
indicator will blink.

with manual transaxle,
do not move the gearshift lever to the “N” (Neutral) position whil

The engine will run too fast and might be damaged.NOTE
