Tongue loads can be adjusted by proper dis- tribution of the load in the trailer. This can bechecked by separately
weighing the loaded
trailer and then the tongue. The GAWRs are printed on the certification label which is riveted on the door sill on the driver’s side. Refer to “Vehicle labeling” on page 11-2. Choose a proper hitch and ball, and make sure it is installed at a height that is compati- ble with the trailer.Use a good equalizing hitch which uniformly distributes the trailer tongue load throughout the frame.
A safety chain must al
ways be used between
the towing vehicle and the trailer. Leave suf-ficient slack in the chain for turns. The chain should cross under the trailer tongue to pre- vent the tongue from dropping to the groundin case it becomes damaged or separated. For correct safety chai
n procedures, consult
your authorized Mitsub
ishi Motors dealer.
Your vehicle will need service more often when you’re towing a trailer. Refer to “WAR-RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN- UAL”. Especially important in trailer operation are automatic transaxle fluid,engine oil, rear axle
oil, belt, c
ooling system
and brake system. Each
of these is covered in
this manual. For details, please refer to the “Vehicle care and maintenance” section.Check periodically to see that all hitch nuts and bolts are tight. Mitsubishi Motors recommends that any trailer having a total we
ight of 1,250 lbs (567
kg) or more (2400 models), 1,400 lbs (635kg) or more (3000 mode
ls) be equipped with
its own electric or surge-type brakes. If you choose electric br
akes, be sure they are
electrically actuated. Do not attempt to tapinto your vehicle’s hydraulic system. No mat- ter how successful it
may seem, any attempt
to attach trailer brakes to your vehicle’shydraulic system will lower braking effec- tiveness and create a potential hazard.
Gross axle weight rating (GAWR) Trailer hitches
WA R N I N G If you make any holes in the body of your vehicle for installing
a trailer hitch, be
sure to seal the holes later when youremove the hitch. If
you don’t seal them,
deadly carbon monoxide (CO) from your exhaust can enter your vehicle. Refer to“Exhaust system” on page 9-24.

Trailer lights and equipment must comply with federal, state,
and local regulations.
Check with your loca
l recreational vehicle
dealer for the requirements in your area, and use only equipment designed for your vehi- cle. Since lighting and wiring
vary by trailer type
and brand, you should have a qualified tech- nician install a suitable connector between thevehicle and the trailer.

warranty. Many states and Canadi

special outside mirrors when towing a trailer. Even if not required,
you should install spe-
cial mirrors if you ca
nnot clearly see behind
you, or if the trailer
creates a blind spot.
Ask your trailer sales or
rental agency if any
other items are recomm
ended or required for
your towing situation.
Towing a trailer requires a certain amount of experience. Before setting out for the open road, you’ll want to get to know your trailer. Acquaint
yourself with the feel of handling and braking with the added weight of the trailer. Alwayskeep in mind that the vehicle you are driving is now a good deal longer and not nearly as responsive as your vehicl
e is without a trailer.
Before you start, check the trailer hitch, safety chains, tires
and mirror adjustment.
Be sure your vehicle’s ti
res are inflated to the
cold inflation pressure listed in the manual. You’ll find these numbe
rs on the tire and
loading information placard at the sill of thedriver’s door. Refer to “Tire inflati
on pressures” on page
9-18. Stay at least twice as far behind the vehicle ahead as you would when driving your vehi- cle without a trailer.
This can help you avoid
situations that require
heavy braking and sud-
den turns.

WA R N I N G If you have a rear window open and you tow a trailer with
your vehicle, carbon
monoxide gas which
you cannot see or
smell could come into your vehicle. It can cause unconsciousness or death. Refer to“Exhaust system” on page 9-24. To maximize your safe
ty when towing a
trailer: Have your exhaust system inspected for leaks, and make necessary repairs beforestarting on your trip. Keep the rear windows closed.If exhaust does come into your vehicle through a window or
another opening,
drive with your front, main heating or cooling system on an
d with the blower on
any speed. This will
bring fresh, outside
air into your vehicle. Do not use recircula- tion because it only recirculates the air inside your vehicle. Refer to “Air selectionswitch” on page 7-9.

The reason why one can hear FM but not AM in parking garages, under
bridges etc., is that
FM signals, unlike AM
signals, are reflected
by solid objects such
as buildings, etc.
Because FM signals ar
e easily reflected by
buildings, this can also cause reception dis- turbances.The direct signal from
the broadcast station
reaches the antenna slightly before the reflected signal. This time difference may cause some reception disturbance or flutter. This problem occurs primarily in urban areas.

station and is in the
vicinity of another st
rong station, both sta-
tions might be receiv
ed simultaneously.
Stereo reception requires a high quality broadcast signal. This means that types ofdisturbances mentioned previously become more marked and the reception range is somewhat diminished during stereo recep-tion.
FM reception is affected by the electrical sys- tems of vehicles in
the vicinity, especially
those without an elec
tronic noise suppression
device. The disturbance is even greater if thestation is weak or poorly tuned. FM reception is not as
sensitive to electrical
disturbances as AM. AM

If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder and turn on the hazard warning flashers. If there is no shoulder, orthe shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly with the hazard
lights flashing, until
you come to a safe stopping place. Keep theflashers flashing. If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering and brakes, making these difficult to use.  The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not grip well. The brake pedal will be harder to press than usual.  Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel will be hard to turn.
Get help from your passengers, bystanders, etc. to push the vehicle
and move it to a safe
area.

cables. 1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets th

3. Set the parking brake firmly on your vehi- cle and move the selector lever into the “P” (PARK) position. 4. Set the parking brake firmly on the othervehicle. Put the automatic transaxle in “P”5. Turn the ignition switch (the engine switch) on each vehicle to the “LOCK” or “OFF” position. 6. Make sure your battery electrolyte is at the proper level. (Refer to “Battery” on page 9-13.)

The fluid level falls slightly with wear of the brake pads, but this
does not indicate any
abnormality. If the fluid level falls sealed tight in a short length of time, it indi
cates leaks from the
brake system. If this occurs, have the vehicle checked by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or arepair facility
of your choice.
Use the recommended brake fluid conform- ing to DOT 3 or DOT 4. The reservoir cap must be tightly sealed to keep dirt and water out.

The condition of the battery is very importantfor quick starting and to keep the vehicle’selectrical system work
ing properly. Check the
battery regularly. If battery performance is suspect, have the battery and charging system tested by anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
The electrolyte level
must be between the
limits shown on the outside of the battery. Fillit with distilled water as needed. The inside of the battery is divided into several compart- ments. Take the cap off of each compartmentand fill to the mark. Do not fill above the top line because a spill during driving could cause damage. The battery is weaker in cold temperatures. This has to do with it
s chemical and physical
properties and is why a very cold battery, especially one with a low charge, will have a hard time starting your vehicle.It is recommended th
at you have your battery

battery life. To disconnect the battery cable, stop the engine. Disconnect the
negative (-) terminal
first, then the positive (+) terminal. To recon- nect the battery, first
connect the positive (+)
terminal and then the negative (-) terminal,before starting the vehicle.Disconnection and connection

 Open the terminal cover (A) before discon- necting or connecting
the positive (+) termi-
nal of the battery.  Loosen the nut (B) a
nd then disconnect the
battery cable from the positive (+) terminal.
WA R N I N G Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running, or you could damagethe vehicle’s electrical parts. Never short-circuit the battery. This could cause it to overheat and be damaged. Keep sparks, cigarettes, and flames away from the battery because the battery couldexplode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is made of corro- sive diluted sulfuric acid. If it spills on nearby parts, it can crack, stain, or dis- color them. And if it gets on your skin orin your eyes, it can cause burns or blind- ness. Please observe the following han- dling instructions:• If electrolyte gets on plastic parts orother nearby parts, wipe it off with a softcloth or chamois soak
ed in a solution of
water and neutral detergent then imme- diately rinse the affected parts withplenty of water.• If electrolyte gets on your hands orclothes, rinse thoroughly with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them with water immediately and get immedi-ate medical attention.

ows in any closed
space where you may be charging or working with the battery. Always wear protecti
ve clothing and gog-
gles when working with the battery, or have a skilled automobi
le technician do it.
If you are quick-ch
arging your battery,
first disconnect the battery cables. In order to prevent a
short-circuit, be sure
to disconnect the negative (-) terminal first, and reconnect it last. If the electrolyte level
is very low, have the
battery checked at an
authorized Mitsubi-
shi Motors dealer or
a repair facility of
your choice. Battery posts, terminals and related acces- sories contain lead
and lead compounds.
Wash hands after handling.NOTE
 Check each battery terminal for corrosion. You can prevent further corrosion by wash-ing with a solution of baking soda and water. Grease the posts and cl
amps after cleaning or
tightening them.  Ensure the battery is securely installed and cannot be moved. Also
check each terminal
for tightness.  If you will not be driving your vehicle for a long period of time, remove the battery andstore it in a place where the battery fluid will not freeze. The battery only should be stored with a full charge.  Before cleaning the battery, tighten all the filler port caps to keep
dirt and moisture out.

The hood lock release mechanism and hood safety catch should be
checked, cleaned, and
oiled when needed for easy movement and to prevent rust and wear. Use Multipurpose Grease NLGI Grade 2 sp
aringly for all sliding
parts of the hood latc
h and release lever.
Work the grease into the hood lock mecha- nism until all the mo
vable surfaces are cov-
ered. Also, put a light coat of the same grease onthe safety catch wherever moving parts touch.

The ventilation slots in front of the wind-shield should be brus
hed clear after a heavy
snowfall so that the operation of the heating and ventilation systems
will not be impaired.
To prevent freezing of the weatherstripping on the doors, engine hood, etc., they should be treated with silicone grease. It is a good idea to carry a shovel or a short- handled spade in the vehicle during the win-ter so that you can clear away snow if you get stranded. A small hand-brush for sweeping snow off the vehicle a
nd a plastic scraper for
the windshield, side an
d rear window are also
useful.
